A monk won 18 million baht [Thai dollars] in a recent lottery and has decided to donate the winnings.

The 67-year-old Theravada Buddhist monastic, Mr. Montri Samajjo, known as Ven. Piak, says he didn’t buy the tickets with the hopes of winning.

He bought them because a lottery ticket seller came by temple asking for help.

The monk gave one million (1,000,000) baht to each of his three children. He then donated a portion of the winnings to the temple as well as to those who needed money. He saved the rest to help people who may need it in the future.

Many Thais are superstitious when it comes to buying lottery tickets. Random occurrences in life, or even dreams, can led people to buying lottery tickets with specific numbers.

Thai media reported that the monk had a strange dream where he was touching an old coffin. The monk says a lottery ticket seller came by the monastery, Wat Thinnakorn Nimit in Nonthaburi, just outside Bangkok.

He said he needed help. He couldn’t sell all of the tickets but needed money. The monk borrowed some money from another monk at the temple and spent 1,500 baht on them.

The tickets had the two-digit suffix numbers 04, 40, 47, 74, and 44. When the numbers were announced, the monk checked the numbers on his tickets and saw that three tickets won 6 million baht each. SOURCE: Thai Residents
