Tsunami? "Rogue wave" slams into Southern California beachgoers, 9 hospitalized
Japanese invented the word tsunami.
(KTLA 5) Dec. 28, 2023: Video was captured by citizen surfer dude Colin Hoag of the terrifying moment beachgoers were slammed into by a massive "rogue wave" (aka "monster wave") in Ventura County, next to Los Angeles, on Thursday. The incident happened as locals were being warned about a massive swell -- and mega surf usually reserved for Hawaii and other surfing hotspots -- pounding the Southern California coastline this week.
The rogue wave submerged bystanders at Pierpont Beach on Seaward Avenue around 11:00 am. As the waters suddenly flooded an observation area, both people and vehicles were instantly swept away. The raging waters destroyed the windows of nearby beachfront buildings and hotels on its destructive path. Beachgoers were seen frantically running for their lives. All survived but some with serious injuries, and nine had to be hospitalized. KTLA's Chris Wolfe reports on Dec. 28, 2023.
Dangerous high surf prompts warnings and closures in Southern California
Hey, gnarly Man, go with the flow. Cala Bunga.
(KTLA 5) Dec. 30, 2023: An evacuation warning was issued for a part of Ventura due to high surf impacting structures in the area. According to Ventura County officials, the warning was issued shortly after 10:00 am for residences bordering Pacific Coast Highway between Seacliff Ave. south to Emma Wood Group Camp. “The Ventura County Fire Department is encouraging individuals to avoid the coastal areas during the storm and high surf warning,” officials said on X (Twitter). “All City, State, and County beaches and parks along the coastline are closed.” KTLA's Chris Wolfe reports on Dec. 30, 2023.
