Stereotypical Southern California summer

When does summer really begin? It's not an astronomical question, as the people into genes insist gender is as easy to assign as reading x's and y's. It is easy if we make it that easy, but it is not so easy when we do not all agree to that as the objective measure.

What is "social summer"?

Mandatory: All Americans must visit a beach.

There's a kind of social summer, which runs between Memorial Day and Labor Day, just an approximation. The seasons do not always cooperate even in parts of the US where four distinct seasons make themselves obvious. There is "Indian summer," which is just a way of saying a long hot spell after official calendrical summer should have ended.

Another example of social summer is the one set by the local school district: When school ends, that's summer. Just ask Alice Cooper! When school begins again, that resumption is the end, even if the weather is still great and drives to the beach are worth the traffic.

There did not used to be a "universal time" but rather many different times depending on the place. They were not simultaneous but more dependent on the sun circling (not revolving) overhead chased by the moon. Those were Tartarian (Tartary) times, and that's all been erased now. A universal measure imposes a definition that does not make sense for everybody on the ground.

Another social summer measure is determined by the concert calendar. The end comes to Pasadena, Los Angeles with the Just Like Heaven Festival this Saturday (Aug. 22, 2026).

Daisy Chain Fields is an upcoming charitable music festival, featuring a women-led lineup at Great Park in Irvine, Orange County, California, founded by American singer Olivia Rodrigo in 2026. All net profits are to go toward organizations supporting females, both women and girls. (Trans womyn are on their own).

Pop superstar Rodrigo appeared in Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery (2025), a documentary about the women-led music festival Lilith Fair, which she cited as an inspiration to her music career.

Lilith Fair co-founder Sarah McLachlan is one of the performers at Daisy Chain Fields. Rodrigo announced the festival on June 22, 2026, concurrently through social media, Pitchfork e-magazine, and radio station 88.5 The SoCal Sound.

In an interview with Shaad D'Souza for Pitchfork e-magazine, Rodrigo said that the festival was inspired by Lilith Fair.

She went on to share, "I just feel like we need something really positive to do and see, and young girls need awesome role models who are supporting other women and who are engaging in something that's really joyful and musical and community-oriented."

A few weeks ago, LA and OC beaches were being subjected to king tides, riptides, with dangerous surfing conditions for experts only. The cause this time seems to be a tropical storm elsewhere disrupting the height and frequency of waves. Surfers may love it as they avoid great white sharks, but others will find it hard to take a dip or swim. Localism is, of course, a greater danger as human sharks with a sense of entitlement circle strangers and drive them out. Expect swells, tubular conditions at The Wedge and elsewhere. Warning: Water may be a little contaminated due to crumbling infrastructure. Sharks are a tiny worry compared to the microscopic contaminants and plastic particle debris. Enjoy.

Not to be judgmental about those males who have an Oedipal complex, sexually fantasizing about their own biological mothers (like females who harbor an Electra complex), but c'mon. This seems biologically repugnant and gross, not to say it is. Maybe we are just trained by our society to regard it so, as seems to be the case in all societies. There seems something built into the human experience to give us a natural aversion to incest, which may be nothing more than the very powerful "familiarity breeds contempt." If we grow up with someone, see too much of them, it seems natural we are not interested sexually in them. This seems to hold most of the time. There are aberrations, of course. But who is for this? Who is for incest? It is hard to believe that it appears to be such a strong feature of the Judeo-Christian mentality. "Judeo-Christian" is a made-up term, invented for Zionist Jewish Israeli hasbara or propaganda to conflate American culture with Jewish culture on account of shared roots through the embrace of Christianity by many WASPs and Europeans. Jews, particularly biblical ones, may be all right with incest, judging from Bible stories, and a strong patriarchal attitude, but do Christian patriarchs feel the same? Are no children in such families safe? Why would it be more prevalent, or seem to be more prevalent, in the South? (We're looking at you, West Virginia). Is it lack of opportunity? Is everyone related? Is it in the zeitgeist so people just go with it? What is going on?
