JOHANN HARI: When I feel depressed, like loads of people, I say I feel down, right? And as I was learning about the causes of depression and anxiety for my book, "Lost Connections," I started to realize, I don't think that's a metaphor. There is this amazing professor at Stanford called Robert Sapolsky who in his early 20s went to live with a troop baboons in Kenya. And it was his job to figure out when are baboons most stressed out. So his job was to hit them with little tranquilizer darts and then take a blood test and measure something called cortisol, which is a hormone that baboons and us release when we're stressed. And baboons live in this hierarchy, so the females don't interestingly but the men live in a very strict hierarchy. So if there's 30 men, number one knows he's above number two, number two knows he's above number three, number 12 knows he's above number 13. And that really determines a lot. It determines who you get to have sex with, it determines what you get to eat, it determines whether you get to sit in the shade or you're pushed out into the heat. Yeah, it's a really, really significant where you are in the hierarchy.
And what Professor Sapolsky found is baboons are most stressed in two situations. One is when their status is insecure. So if you're the top guy and someone's circling which comes for you, you will be massively stressed. And the other situation is when you feel you're at the bottom of a hierarchy, you've been kind of humiliated. And what Professor Sapolsky found is when you feel you've been pushed to the bottom, what you do is you show something called submission gesture. Baboon will put its body down physically or put its head down, it will put its bottom in the air and it will cover its head. So it clearly seems to be communicating, "Just leave me alone, you've beaten me. Okay, you've beaten me." And what lots of scientists, people like Professor Paul Gilbert in Britain and Professor Kate Pickett and Professor Richard Wilkinson also in Britain have really developed is this idea that actually what human depression is in part, not entirely, but in part, is a form of a submission gesture. It's a way of saying, I can't cope with this anymore, right? Particularly people who feel they've been pushed to the bottom of hierarchies or who feel remember the other stressful situations when you feel your status is insecure it's a way of just going, "Okay, can I retreat?" "I don't want this fight anymore." "You've beaten me." It's a kind of very strong evolutionary impulse where you feel you're under attack to just submit in the hope that the stress and anxiety will then go away. The sources of the stress and anxiety will then go away.
And one thing that is so important, Kate Pickett and Richard Wilkinson really developed this, is they've shown so as inequality grows, depression and anxiety grow. They've shown, this is very robust effect, right? This helps us to explain it. One in five Americans will take a psychiatric drug, one in four middle-aged women in the United States is taking a chemical antidepressant in any given year. And I began to think, could it really be that just so many people are just mysteriously lacking a specific chemical in their brain? Why does it seem to be rising so much if that's the cause? If you live in Norway, your status is relatively secure, right? No one's that high, no one's that low, movement between where you are is not so extreme. Since the novel coronavirus (aka SARS CoV-2 or Covid-19) escaped China and developed into the worst pandemic since the 1918 H1N1 "Spanish" Flu that infected 500 million, killing 50-100 million, China has accepted no responsibility for originating the virus [manipulating it from an animal host to be able to contaminate humans].
China kept the coronavirus epidemic quiet from November 2019, getting Ethiopian World Health Organization (W.H.O.) Director-General Tedros Adhanom to maintain secrecy until W.H.O. finally admitted on March 11 that it was a global pandemic, three months after world governments could do anything to prevent its spread.

Now China is cracking down on research into its origin. China faces a growing liability with many United Nations (UN) member-states who want China to pay reparations for the tragic human toll. More importantly, they want China to pay for the loss of about $25 trillion to world economies.
Loss of business and industry from the SARS CoV-2 could plunge the world economy into a great depression in 2020. Some analysts predict a U.S. unemployment rate rising over 20%, with recent unemployment claims of over 14 million [some say over 17 million]. But, no, China refuses to accept responsibility for releasing the virus first on Wuhan then the world.
Because W.H.O. Director-General Tedros refused to acknowledge the severity of the epidemic in China until March 11th, the world lost precious time to take preventive measures and mitigation efforts to stop the virus from spreading worldwide.
China’s communist government reported today that any academic papers about the origin of the coronavirus are subject to government vetting.
Two days after Director Tedros admitted the SARS CoV-2 epidemic had become a global pandemic, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Zhao Lijian said on March 13 that the U.S. military planted the virus in Wuhan.
Reports of the probable cause focus on a wild animal wet market, where infected exotic animals were sold into Wuhan’s food supply. Zhao wanted to make sure that no one implicated the Chinese Institute of Virology in Wuhan -- only miles from that wild wet animal market, specifically its bioweapons lab -- for the possible leak that resulted in human-to-human infection in Wuhan.

(BBC News, 1/8/20) Maps and pictures of Australia's unprecedented bushfires are being spread widely on social media. Users post them to raise awareness of the devastating fires, but some of the viral maps are misleading. They are spreading disinformation about the crisis. One image shared widely by Twitter users, including the famous singer Rihanna, was interpreted as a map showing the live extent of fire spread, with large sections of the Australian coastline molten-red and fiery. But it is actually artist Anthony Hearsey's visualization of one month of data of locations where fire was detected, collected by NASA's Fire Information for Resource Management System. Australia is fighting one of its worst bushfire seasons, fueled by record-breaking temperatures and months of severe drought [weather modification, dam water mismanagement]. Since September at least 25 people have died and thousands have been made homeless. More than 15.6 million acres (63,000 sq kms, 6.3 million hectares) have been burned so far. One hectare, by the way, is roughly the size of a sports field.

The first problem is the destruction of the Great Barrier Reef, as the coral dies due to rising acidity and ocean warming, except warm ocean wouldn't kill the coral were it not for the acidity that eats it away. Why in Australian waters? It turns out that due to the foolish and shortsighted building of many dams, the alkaline silt which normally would run out into the ocean to balance the acidity is no longer there. Solution?

Moreover, on Friday, Jan. 31st, the famous Western Buddhist monk Ajahn Brahm, who lives in Perth, far western Australia, explained that when it gets very hot, and it has been very hot, and the fires approach, volatile organic compounds in eucalyptus and other trees combust in the air, and the trees explode like bombs (Ajahn Brahm, BSWA). There's no way to stop these fires once they get going.

PARIS, France - It's official: Bacon, hotdogs, ham, sausage, boloney, and other "processed" (embalmed, cured, chemically preserved, smoked, sugar coated, salted, treated, irradiated, altered) meats can lead to colon, stomach and other CANCERS -- and red meat (like hamburger and steak) is probably cancer-causing, too.

While doctors have long warned against eating too much meat, the World Health Organization (WHO)'s cancer agency gave the most definitive response yet today about its relation to cancer -- and put processed meats in the same danger category as cigarettes or asbestos.

A group of 22 scientists from the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France evaluated more than 800 studies from several continents about meat and cancer. Based on that evaluation, they classified processed meat as "carcinogenic to humans" and red meat as "probably carcinogenic."
Meat industry groups protest the classification. The North American Meat Institute [N-a-MI or "enemy"?] argued in a statement that "cancer is a complex disease not caused by single foods" and stressed the importance of lifestyle and environmental factors.

WHO, researchers, and health officials are already trying to contain the spread of resistant strains of the Plasmodium falciparum parasite along the Thai-Cambodian border. The parasite causes the most deadly form of malaria.
Preliminary studies in 2008-09 by the Mekong countries of Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Burma, Thailand, and Vietnam, show tolerance elsewhere, with the drug proving less effective and taking longer than it did previously to control the parasite.
