A whole new meaning to child's pose! Meet America's youngest yoga teacher
Jaysea DeVoe [deva?] is a yoga instructor. She has the challenging job of teaching fidgety preschoolers the ancient spiritual practice, but once her charges get going, she says, "They really start to focus and listen."
DeVoe knows a thing or two about childhood and focus, for she is only 12-years-old and just recently became a certified yoga instructor after completing 200 hours of teacher training. She is believed to be the youngest certified female yoga instructor in the U.S.
I'm not taking her class (vogue.it/en)
Twelve-year-old certified yoga instructor Jaysea DeVoe teaches her yoga class at Bergamot Spa in California.
In addition to her pint-sized students aged four to six, she teaches teens and fellow tweens in her California beach town of Encinitas and is about to start a family yoga class. Oh, and she just told her dad she wants to look into making eco-friendly yoga mats.
"I feel like I want to do this for a long time because I love teaching so much," says DeVoe, the picture of a California beach girl, with long blond hair and long legs to match. But DeVoe is not alone in her entrepreneurial zeal. Her twin brother, 12, is a sponsored competitive surfer and works at a surfboard fin manufacturing company. Perspective as a Power Tool: 3 Ways to Change the Way We See Things
"I kind of quit surfing when I got out of high school, but then a few years ago I started to take it up again. I'm not an expert by any means, but it's so wonderful to get out in the ocean and get a different perspective on things." - Actor Jeff Bridges
It's part of the human condition that we come upon challenging moments when it feels like people in our lives, or even life itself, are wearing us down. Or perhaps there is a specific aspect of a situation or relationship that is showing up as a persistent source of discomfort. At these times... More

Cycling through the Day for Mindful Practice – The Body/Mind Types
According to Ayurveda [Vedic science of health], the energetic qualities of the doshas (or body/mind types: vata, pitta, and kapha)
rotate throughout the day. So different influences predominate during
different portions of the day. They can affect our practices of poses (asana), pranayama(spirit control),
and meditation as well as our strength, state of mind, mood, and more.
As yoga therapists, acknowledging and understanding these cycles can
help us more effectively work with clients and students. The
inherent qualities of the doshas have a strong influence... We can fight against or
flow with and utilize practice to help find balance... More
Coroner calls on soft drink firms to carry more warnings on hazards of sugar and caffeine and declares that drinking Coca-Cola was a "substantial factor" in
the death of 30-year-old.
Natasha Harris, 30, who died three years ago after a cardiac arrest, drank up to 10 liters of the [dangerous but popular excitotoxin (flavorants and chemical sweeteners like Aspartame), sugar, caffeine-laden] fizzy drink each day.
This is twice the recommended safe limit of caffeine and more than 11 times the recommended sugar intake.
Processed white sugar is an addictive drug.
Coca-Cola had argued that it could not be proved its product had contributed to Ms. Harris' death. [Maybe someone else could, but it could prove it was guilty.]
The coroner's verdict came on the day Coca-Cola Sales said sales in Europe and China fell in the last quarter of 2012, and [it] warned of a "volatile" year to come.
"Clear warnings" needed
Natasha Harris, a mother of eight from the southern New Zealand city of Invercargill, suffered from ill [and soda-contributed declining] health for years before her death.
Her family said she had developed an addiction to Coca-Cola and would get withdrawal symptoms, including "the shakes," if she went without her favorite drink. [Think of Honey Boo Boo's "Go Go Water"].
"(She would) go crazy if she ran out... she would get the shakes, withdrawal symptoms, be angry, on edge and snappy," her mother-in-law Vivien Hodgkinson told the coroner's inquest last year.
Ms. Harris drank Coke throughout her waking hours, and her teeth had been removed because of decay.
"The fact that one or more of her children were born without enamel on their teeth should have been treated by her, and by her family, as a warning"
Coroner weighs in
Coroner David Crerar said her Coca-Cola consumption had given rise to cardiac arrhythmia, a condition when the heart beats too [quickly] or too slow[ly].
"I find that when all the available evidence is considered, were it not for the consumption of very large quantities of Coke by Natasha Harris, it is unlikely that she would have died when she died and how she died," Mr. Crerar's finding said.
The coroner calculated that drinking 10 liters (17.5 pints) of Coke amounted to more than 2.21 lbs (1 kg) of sugar and 970 mg of caffeine, Television New Zealand (TVNZ) reports. More

Sex, coffee, alcohol, chocolate [all stimulants consumed in the hopes of relaxing] are less important to us than soothing, hypnotic screen time in front of our devices.
Americans are more connected than ever -- at least to the Internet.
A new survey by The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) attempts to quantify just how much we value access to the World Wide Web. Its findings are somewhat surprising.
Asked what they would give up for a year in order to maintain access to the Internet,
21 percent of Americans said they'd forgo sex
69 percent coffee
73 percent alcohol
77 percent said they'd go a whole year without chocolate.
BCG also tried to determine in dollar terms the worth of the Internet for most people living in the US. As it turns out, US consumers would need to be paid roughly $2,500 to live without the Net for a year.
What do Americans value the most about the Internet? General search, e-mail, and access to online banking and investing.
USA compensates its war crime victims in Afghanistan The American government goes way over what it usually pays for murdered humans in an effort to mend relations after massacre and be able to keep active soldier longer while reaping huge profits. Is it more money, or has the US dollar just lost much of its value?
The world loves alcohol (and drugs). It loves to check out. There are times when people seek "mind expanding" sacraments and substances (DMT, Iboga, Ayahuasca, mushrooms, LSD, poison toad sweat, cacti, and other entheogens).
But most of the time it is about becoming unconscious, careless, negligent, and uninhibited. The Buddha drew out five fundamental actions to abstain from just to be human -- to be reborn in this world or higher.
They are absolutely fundamental to profitable conduct, to freedom from remorse, and to absorption (jhana), insight (vipassana), mature wisdom (prajna), and enlightenment (bodhi).
One would not think so given the lax attitude towards nearly all of them today. It is important to note that the Buddha did not invent these, nor was he the only one to advocate them. They have a long history he acknowledged.
5th Precept: "I vow to undertake to abstain from consuming intoxicants that occasion heedlessness." Sura-meraya-majja-pamadatthana veramani sikkha padam samadiyami.
But he personally verified that holding these precepts led to long term happiness -- freedom from worry and a good rebirth when the karma of holding them comes to fruition. There is a famous saying: "One who upholds the Dharma (the truth) is upheld by the Dharma."
The Five Precepts are almost universally agreed on. They are what we would like "done unto us" even if it is hard not to do them unto others:
refrain from taking life
refrain from taking what is not given
refrain from taking sexual liberties (misconduct)
refrain from talking falsely (perjury, slander, divisiveness, useless chat)
refrain from intoxicants (sura and meraya) that lead to heedlessness.
How many types of intoxicants are there? There are ten types of intoxicants, five sura (fermented brews) and five meraya (distilled spirits).
Fermented from...
flour (ale),
sweets (toddy),
rice (saki),
yeast (beer),
a combination of ingredients (Jagermeister or Leberkleister, “liver glue”).
Preared from (meraya)...
flowers (flavored wine),
fruit (wine),
honey (mead),
sugar-cane (spirits),
a combination of ingredients (liqueur).
In the fifth precept specific mention is not made of all intoxicants. But the same is true of all the precepts: not every permutation is listed.
What is intended? Intoxicants. What is one to infer? If it tends to lead one to heedlessness, it is best avoided.
Heedlessness means paying no heed to the Dharma, good for oneself and others, and the other four precepts. This happens when one is incapacitated by intoxication. Drugs such as opium and cannabis can have the same effect, as can heroin, cocaine, and to a lesser degree addictive caffeine.
Tobacco, strangely, is NOT very addictive. Cigarettes are! But that is not due to the nicotine, as we are told. Grow it, roll it, and see. Corporate manufacturing, additives, hybridization, and delivery make "tobacco" highly addictive (probably due to the sugar used to cure the leaves), cancerous, and debilitating.
The same might be true of coffee beans and coca leaves and possibly medical cannabis (low on THC, high on medicinal cannabinoids). In their natural state, they are mild. As manufactured chemicals, they are intensely harmful and difficult to give up.
Dr. Gabor Mate has demonstrated with thousands of addicts that, in fact, addiction is not about the substance itself. If it were, every experimenter would become addicted. It is about the interaction between early trauma that predisposes one to addictions.
If one is observing the Five Precepts as a permanent ongoing practice (nicca sila, or as a lunar observance, Uposatha) and indulges in intoxicating substances, is it breaking the fifth precept?
The precept is broken with the use of intoxicants that have the tendency to lead to heedlessness. So intention plays into it. We can fool ourselves all we want and say, "It's medicinal." That does not change the fact. Even medicines can be abuse. In fact, most drug abuse today is the purposeful misuse of pharmaceuticals.
Tiny amounts of brandy, celebratory champagne, or other spirits are alcohol and occasion heedlessness. If used in small amounts (not enough to get high on) for medicinal purposes, then they will not cause one to become inebriated or addicted, and the precept is not broken.
The Buddha Explains Wisdom Quarterly translation (Udana 5.5)
Thus have I heard. One time the Buddha was residing at Jetavana, the monastery donated by Anathapindika, near Savatthi.
At that time the Blessed One, having called all the monastics together, addressed them: "Meditators!"
They responded, "Venerable sir!" (They then prepared themselves to hear the following discourse). The Buddha then gave the following instruction on the lunar eight-precept observance (Uposatha).
"Meditators, the lunar observance is comprised of eight factors observed by the noble disciple. Such observation brings glorious and radiant fruit and benefit. "What is it?"
"Meditators, noble disciples in this Dharma and Discipline reflect in this way:
'All enlightened beings, for as long as life lasts, have given up the taking of liquors and intoxicants, of that which intoxicates, causing carelessness. They stay far from intoxicants.'
"All of you have given up the taking of liquors and intoxicants. You abstain from drink that causes carelessness. For all of this day and night, in this manner, you will be known as having followed the enlightened ones, and the lunar [sabbath] observance will have been kept by you."

(HBO, Susan Saladoff) Stories we're told by corporate media hide shocking truths.
Is Justice Being Served?

Everyone knows the McDonald’s coffee case. It has been routinely cited as an example of how citizens have taken advantage of America’s corporations and legal system, but is that a fair rendition of the facts?
Hot Coffee reveals what really happened to Stella Liebeck, the 81-year-old Albuquerque woman who spilled scalding coffee on herself and sued McDonald’s, while exploring how and why the case garnered so much media attention, who funded the effort, and to what end.
How corporate America destroyed our rights in court
[Hint: Corporations fabricated AstroTurf organizations to undermine our legal standing against them in court whenever they are liable for anything from irresponsibility, to criminal negligence, to rape. Yes, rape. KBR/Halliburton got a case against them redirected to private arbitration in the case of the group rape of Jamie Leigh Jones.] See the film, and decide who really profited from spilling hot coffee.
Jamie Leigh Jones, featured in "Hot Coffee" was raped by corporate (Halliburton/KBR) forces in Iraq (Mother Jones/Twylah.com).
“Eye-opening indictment of the way big business spins the media.” —Variety
“Stunning debut … Sends audiences out of the theater thinking in a brand new way.” —Washington Post
Why was the coffee so hot (190 degrees or just 22 degrees below boiling) even after 700 complaints to McDonalds? Three reasons: it was corporate policy. But why? To mask with heat the flavor of the cheap coffee beans used by McDonald's and, moreover, to keep people from asking for a second free cup of coffee because by the time the first one cools, most customers have already left the fast food outlet.
Why was Pfc. Jamie Jones gang raped so badly by US soldiers ahd Halliburton/KBR contractors that she needed reconstructive surgery? Rape is a perk for our troops in Iraq -- homosexual sodomy of fellow US soldiers, sexual assault of nearly all female troops and support staff, rape and murder of Iraqi girls (maybe boys and prisoners, too). Don't ask, don't tell. It's torture, it puts people (prisoners as well as soldiers) in their place, keeps the hierarchy/patriarchy and our culture of violence alive. It's CIA policy.
Many go without treatment when their medical problems involve stigmatized body parts, such as the bowels; journalist Katie Couric's on-air colon cancer screening in 2000 was an effort to combat that stigma surrounding the disease that killed her husband. But when symptoms are traditionally associated with "manliness," the shame is often rooted in a fear of being unfeminine or undesirable. [5 Reasons Being a Woman is Good For Your Health]
Milton Krisiloff, M.D. (Scribd.com) The Prevention for Urinary Problems. Heartburn, Arthritis, & Potentially Prostate Cancer For the last 30 years, Dr. Krisiloff has personally cared for and cured more than 10,000 patients -- men and women -- who suffer from chronic urological problems.
With a simple holistic approach that has no risk, he has seen cures in close to 90% of his patients who suffer from these problems.
Literally 90 million men and women in the United States experience these urinary problems at one time or another. Estimates are that one quarter of all visits to urologists annually are from these complaints.
Yet until now, university scientists and physicians will readily admit they have no known explanation for these problems, nor do they know how to effectively treat these problems.
With the Krisiloff Diet, a [natural and easy] cure is now possible for the problems of prostatitis, epididymitis, falsely elevated PSA blood tests, bed wetting in children, urgency incontinence in women, urethral syndrome (in Dr. Krisiloff’s opinion this is falsely diagnosed as interstitional cystitis), increased urination at night (which greatly disturbs sleep), and frequent urination in the day (greatly affecting quality of life). Unnecessary prostate surgery for men can be avoided and unnecessary surgery for women for urine incontinence can also be avoided.
What causes these symptoms? Alcohol, soda/coffee (caffeine), hot spices.
All of this can be accomplished at absolutely zero cost, with absolutely zero harm to the patient. And the results can be seen in as little as four to eight weeks.
With its simple holistic approach, the Krisiloff Diet could supplant all the expensive [allopathic] methods now used. It could become the standard initial treatment for so many common medical problems, often circumventing costly and ineffective traditional methods.
The savings for healthcare would be enormous -- close to $40 billion dollars by some estimates -- once it is realized [and admitted by doctors happy to use the most costly and therefore profitable therapies] that expensive medications and surgeries are not necessary.
Dr. Krisiloff has empitically discovered the “holy grail” explanation for inflammation in the body. The discovery is that caffeine, alcohol, and hot spices are responsible for causing chronic inflammation in the body.
They specifically lead to chronic urinary problems as well as other common medical condition such as gastroesophigeal reflux disease (GERD), arthritis, sinusitis, and headaches. There is even reason to believe that they are responsible for some cases of prostate cancer, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and colon and breast cancers. More

What plant alkaloids are there?
America, of course, is a continent, not a country. While the US empire may sway and undermine the rest of the world, it does not represent the Americas.
The Amazon jungle is an amazing (and some say created, i.e., terraformed) factory of amazing alkaloids. The world's favorite stimulants come from South American jungles and highlands: chocolate (cacao with theobromides), coffee (caffeine), coca (cocaine).
The favorite drink on this continent is not Coca Cola (which originally contained addictive and destructive white cane sugar and habit-forming coca leaves chewed in the Peruvian Andes for energy).
Now chemical corn-glucose and formaldehyde with methyl-alcohol (which is what aspartame breaks down into) laden soda may be consumed corroding plastic and aluminum containers, yet it is not the favored drink.
Traditional yerba mate serving container
Coffee may have conquered the world with detrimental health consequences that are repeatedly obscured by "new scientific findings" to suggest rancid, roasted seeds could possibly be a good idea to consume even in small quantities.
The continental favorite is Guayaki, known everywhere as Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) a subtropical species of Holly.
According to ABC, Yerba Mate is now being marketed in the US as an energy-boosting diet tea. It contains various minerals, including phosphorous, iron, calcium, and vitamins C, B1, and B2. But it also contains caffeine (and, in limited amounts, theophylline and theobromine), which are all stimulants.
Bottled Yerba Mate
Some manufacturers of Yerba Mate say their brands contain a caffeinelike substance that makes one less jittery called "mateine." But it seems that chemically, it is identical to caffeine. The bottom line: It provides a hit of energy, but that hit is due to caffeine.
WARNING: Research has found chronic consumption of this tea over years may increase the risk of head and neck cancers [although Argentinians, Brazilians, and others disagree]. Source

Hungry Ghosts may be understood in terms of Buddhist cosmology or psychology: Whereas one makes them hard to believe in, the other is undeniable because it's us.
What does the book title In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts mean?
DR. GABOR MATE: It's a Buddhist phrase. In Buddhist Psychology, there are a number of realms that human beings cycle through. All of us. One is the Human Realm, which is our ordinary selves. The Hell Realm is that of unbearable rage, fear, terror, you know, these emotions that are difficult to handle. The Animal Realm is our instincts and our [hate] and our passions.
Now, the Hungry Ghost Realm, the creatures in it are depicted as people with large, empty bellies, small mouths, and scrawny, thin necks. They can never get enough satisfaction. They can never fill their bellies. They're always hungry, always empty, always seeking it from the outside. That speaks to a part of us that I have, and everybody in our society has, where we want satisfaction from the outside, where we're empty, where we want to be soothed by something in the short term. But we can never feel that, or fulfill that, insatiety from outside.
The addicts are in that realm all the time. Most of us are in that realm some of the time. And my point really is, is that there's no clear distinction between the identified addict and the rest of us. There's just a continuum on which we all may be found. They're on it because they suffered more than most of us.
Can you talk about the biology of addiction?
DR. MATE: Sure, you see, if you look at the brain circuits of addiction -- and that's true whether it's a shopping addiction, like mine, or an addiction to opiates like the heroin addict -- we're looking for endorphins in our brains. Endorphins are the brain's feelgood, reward, pleasure, and pain-relief chemicals. They also happen to be the love chemicals that connect us to the universe and to one another.
A visit to the Hungry Ghost Realm, circa 1969, with petas before they became horribly disfigured by their all-consuming cravings and addictions (Rolling Stones).
Now, that circuitry in addicts doesn't function very well. As the circuitry of incentive and motivation, which involves the chemical dopamine, also doesn't function very well. Stimulant drugs like cocaine and crystal meth, nicotine and caffeine -- all elevate dopamine levels in the brain -- as does sexual acting out, as does extreme sports, as does workaholism, and so on.
Now the issue is, Why do these circuits not work so well in some people? Because the drugs in themselves are not, surprisingly, addictive. And what I mean by that is, is that most people who try most drugs never become addicted to them. And so there has to be susceptibility there. And the susceptible people are the ones with these impaired brain circuits. And the impairment is caused by early adversity rather than by genetics...
What do you mean "early adversity"?
DR. MATE: Well, the human brain, unlike any other mammal, for the most part develops under the influence of the environment. And that's because, from the evolutionary point of view, we develop these large heads, large fore brains, and to walk on two legs... Listen to more (4:20)
REAL BUDDHIST GHOST STORIES The Stories of Ghosts (Petavatthu) is a Theravada Buddhist scripture. It is included in the Khuddaka Nikaya of the Pali Canon's Sutta Pitaka. It is composed of 51 verse narratives describing how the effects of bad actions can lead to rebirth in the unhappy world of hungry ghosts (petas). Such rebirth takes place in accordance with the doctrine of karma. It also highlights the teaching that giving alms to very moral individuals in particular and monastics in general might benefit one's relatives who have passed away.
