Ekaterina Sky: send stories, vote SXSW

“I think I should start making art again”
The intentions and prayers for the Earth were embedded here then covered with gold leaf.
Altadena Fire Mural Project, 2026, with golden prayers and us circled in red (Ekaterina Sky)
.
Channeled inspiration for artful beauty
Six months after the Los Angeles fires, we built an art wall in Altadena. There were not many walls left to paint on, so we built one on the empty lot where the vegan cafe Oh Happy Days used to be.

Over four days the foothill neighborhood came and wrote their prayers and intentions to be sealed into the golden sphere at the center of the mural, some in English, some in Spanish, some in many other languages. One was a single name. One asked for the soil to become clean again. Then we sealed every one of those prayers under gold leaf.

A gold embedded Prayer for the Earth
They are still under there, and nobody can read them. On the final Sunday of our public art project, a woman came over to tell me about her friend: Her friend had lost her home in the Eaton Fire and had not smiled once in the six months since.

Her friend was at the wall right then, with a glistening brush in her hand. She was smiling. She had just said, “I think I should start making art again.” I did not go over to her. That moment was hers.

I thought, “She has every fact about what she lost. The facts do nothing for her. A wall, a brush, and her neighbors gave her somewhere to put it, and she picked the brush back up.” That is what I've been trying to say for 20 years! To put it plainly:

“Data hands us the truth.
Beauty is what lets us carry it.”

Knowing is not the hard part. Holding it is. Beauty is what makes the weight bearable enough to keep holding and acting on.

Vote for this talk at SXSW 2027
Save the forest, save the animals
I want to argue for that position in front of a room full of people who build things rather than a room of those who already agree with me. So I proposed a talk at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, next March (2027) I am calling, “Why Beauty Moves Us When Data Doesn’t.”

DESCRIPTION: Two decades of painting murals converges on one idea: Shared beauty can hold what words cannot yet reach, a shift that decides what people go on to protect.

After the 2025 Eaton Fire in Altadena, survivors gathered at a community mural to write their intentions and prayers into the paint. A woman who had not smiled since losing her home picked up a brush. This talk lays out the method behind the shift and how to build it into a strategy that moves people.

SESSION TAKEAWAYS:
  1. Art show LA Climate Week '26
Why aesthetic experience shifts emotional orientation faster than data or logical arguments, and what that means for building a movement or campaign.
  2. A repeatable method for designing beauty and participation into engagement strategy, instead of attaching them as decoration afterward.
  3. Real, working examples, a reforestation partnership, a global soil movement, a wildfire recovery mural, proof the method produces outcomes. More

It is about how that Sunday afternoon of the art project actually worked. Read it HERE. It is accompanied on the page by a two-minute film of me speaking at the UN Climate Summit in Belém, Brazil.

Send me your stories!
REQUEST: If a moment like that has ever happened to you, I would love to hear it. I am collecting them to inspire others.

G20 does not blame Russia for Ukraine war

Soutik Biswas, Vikas Pandey (BBC, 9/9/23); Pfc. Sandoval, A. Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Obey what the Party dictates (1984).
This article concerns the G20 currently going on in Delhi, India (Bharat), and the American proxy-war in Ukraine against Russia, instigated by the CIA and NATO, pushing Russia to take back territory. US propaganda has been so successful that former peaceniks and conscientious objectors on the Left now cry for war and more war like Republicans used to.

We don't like Nazis. NATO are Nazis.
Pres. Putin is a dictator leading a junta of oligarchs, but what is our Pres. Biden and our U.S. Department of War? The U.S. has not sent over $171 billion dollars in [military] aid to fight our proxy war. Another $20 billion seems to have been authorized today. The U.S. sends war crime munitions like anti-Vietnam cluster bombs and gets other smaller countries to give Ukraine what international law bans us from giving. Who are the warmongers, invading Russians tricked on the ground or the U.S. Chair Force, sitting, plotting, wringing their hands for a Hot War because Cold War moves too slowly? Anyone who has become pro-war for this war has been duped.
G20 Summit laments Ukraine war, but avoids blaming Russia
Ukrainian Nazi logo
G20 SUMMIT, Delhi, India - The G20 Summit in India has agreed on a joint declaration, including a statement on the [U.S. proxy-] war in Ukraine.

On the first of their two-day meeting, G20 leaders denounced the use of force for territorial gain but stopped short of directly criticizing Russia.

The Ukrainian government [which really has official Neo-Nazis and is critical of the G20] said the statement was "nothing to be proud of."

Everyone knows Ukraine has real Nazis
The Summit in Delhi also discussed a number of global issues, including climate change and the debt burden of developing countries. But it was a day of unexpectedly big headlines at the G20 Summit.

Few expected a joint declaration, not least on the first day of the Summit given the sharp divisions in the group over the war in Ukraine.
.
But Indian Bharati Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the group had reached consensus on the declaration.
  • [India just changed its name back to pre-colonial "Bharat."]
.
NATO and Azov Nazis pushed us and pushed us...
A strong indication that last-minute negotiations were ongoing came in an earlier draft of the declaration accessed by the BBC on Friday: It showed the paragraph on Ukraine was left blank.

The sticking point was the Ukraine war, as it was during the Bali Summit last year. The Delhi declaration appears designed to allow both the West and Russia to find positives.

Zelenskyy is not Jewish, not against Azov Nazis
But in the process, it has used language that is not as strong in its condemnation of Moscow as it was in Bali last year.

In Bali, the members deplored "in the strongest terms the aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine," although it noted that "there were other views and different assessments of the situation and sanctions."

The Delhi declaration does not directly criticize Russia for the war. But it does talk about "the human suffering and negative added impacts of the war in Ukraine with regard to global food and energy security."
  • [No one dared call out the real instigators of this war, the USA, CIA, Pentagon, and many American politicians and military-industrial complex figures.]
JimmyDore.com counters US war propaganda
It also repeated the acknowledgement of "different views and assessments." Importantly, the declaration specifies "the war in Ukraine" rather than "the war against Ukraine." This choice of words could have increased the likelihood of Russia endorsing of the declaration.

Ukraine, which took part in the Bali summit, was not invited this year, and its response to the declaration has been critical.

"In terms of Russia's [counter-] aggression against Ukraine [in response to NATA aggression and CIA/USA instigation], G20 has nothing to be proud of," the Ukrainian foreign ministry tweeted.

Why is the USA backing Ukrainian Nazis?
It's hard for Kyiv to see the dropping of any reference to Russian "aggression" as anything but a sign that its Western backers are losing the argument with the "global South" over how to characterize the war. More

Stop climate crimes! Bonn, Germany (video)

Amy Goodman (democracynow.org); Ashley Wells, Seth Auberon (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Let's avoid the "climate alarmism." Carbon is good. Other greenhouse gases like methane from raising animals for slaughter and corporate pollution from petrochemicals and consumer manufacturing are harmful. They are far more heat-trapping than carbon. The fake "solution" of SELLING carbon credits to allow polluters to legally pollute is a scam that will destroy the environment in the name of trying to save it. Earth needs a real solution. We need better efficiency rates of 100 MPG, which is already possible. We don't have it because it is not within the capitalist-framework we live under. Corporatists grow rich by making a predetermined rate of profit from burning oil and other toxic "assets." Keep it in the ground. We need regulations and enforcement. We need clean-renewables -- solar, wind, ocean tide mills, free energy (already available), recycling, pre-cycling -- not fake Democrat solutions and Republican obstructionism. The mainstream media is not on our side. They are ignoring this climate summit. They are on the side of the monied-interests that own them.

Int’l Buddhist Conferences set for 2012

Wisdom Quarterly

The next International Buddhist Conference will be held in 2012 on the Theravada Buddhist island of Sri Lanka. The title and theme of it is “New Millennium Challenges for Buddhism,” according to the Sri Lanka Minister of Higher Education, S.B. Dissanayake. The conference will be held from February 17-19 at the Buddhasravaka Bhiksu University, Anuradhapura.

Over 100 Buddhist scholars from local and international Buddhist organizations will take part. The conference is aimed at presenting over 100 research papers from different parts of the globe to discuss the progressive aspects of the Buddhist establishment in their respective countries.

Moreover, the issues and challenges Buddhist monastics and laypersons encounter will also be discussed. In addition, the forum will call attention to several goals such as investigating a meaningful mechanism to modernize Buddhist education. Other goals are to share strategies, adopted by different Buddhist traditions, to:

  • upgrade Buddhism, to draft a coordinated plan to propagate the Buddha's message to an ultra-modern society equipped with the latest consumer technology and the resultant mindset, to discuss ways and means of reintroducing the age-old relationship between monastics and laity.

UN Hears About Jewish Racism

RACISM, HOLOCAUST, FREEDOM OF SPEECH, SILVERMAN HUMOR

Protesting the treatment of Arabs (Tales-of-iraq-war.blogspot.com)
GENEVA – A day after Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad caused an uproar with a speech attacking Israel at a U.N. conference on racism, the U.N. said Tuesday that Ahmadinejad had actually dropped language from the speech that described the Holocaust as "ambiguous and dubious."

The U.N. and the Iranian Mission in Geneva did not comment on why the change was made. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, however, said he had met with the Iranian president before his speech Monday and reminded him the U.N. had adopted resolutions "to revoke the equation of Zionism with racism and to reaffirm the historical facts of the Holocaust."

Ahmadinejad is lampooned as a pariah and strawman to despise. But as unpalatable a figure as he may be, his statements ring true for many even as they offend others (Cartoon: atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com).

Ahmadinejad may have decided to drop the Holocaust phrase that was in his original text to deliver his condemnation of Israel in a more palatable fashion for many countries.

Still, Ahmadinejad's accusation that the West used the Holocaust as a "pretext" for aggression against Palestinians still provoked walkouts by delegates including every European Union country in attendance. But others, including those from the Vatican, stayed because they said he stopped short of denying the Holocaust.
The walkout came after Ahmadinejad accused Western nations of complicity in violence against Palestinians surrounding the foundation of Israel.

The original text of his speech said "following World War II, they resorted to military aggression to make an entire nation homeless on the pretext of Jewish sufferings and the ambiguous and dubious question of Holocaust."

U.N. spokeswoman Marie Heuze said U.N. officials had checked back with the interpreters and the Farsi recording of Ahmadinejad's speech, and determined that the Iranian president had dropped the terms "ambiguous and dubious," referring instead in Farsi to "the abuse of the question of the Holocaust."

Adding to the confusion, the live English translation of the speech did not mention the word "Holocaust" at all, while the French stayed true to the spoken words of Ahmadinejad. The English translator apparently was following the prepared text and stopped speaking when the Iranian president changed the wording.

The meeting turned chaotic from the start when two protesters in rainbow wigs tossed red clown noses at Ahmadinejad as he began his speech with a Muslim prayer. A Jewish student group from France said it had been trying to convey "the masquerade that this conference represents."

The United States and eight other Western countries had already boycotted the event that started on the eve of Israel's Holocaust Remembrance Day, because of concerns Muslim countries would drown out all other issues with calls to denounce Israel and restrict free speech when it comes to criticizing Islam.

Over 100 other countries on Tuesday approved a 16-page declaration calling on the world to combat intolerance. The declaration did not mention Israel, but among dozens of other points, it reaffirms a 2001 statement issued after the U.N.'s first global racism meeting in South Africa that recognized the "plight of the Palestinians" while affirming the Jewish state's right to security.

That support of the 2001 document was cited by President Barack Obama's administration as the reason it boycotted the Geneva meeting.

African-American groups participating in the conference sharply criticized Obama and his administration for not attending and not signing its declaration against racism.

"The boycott of the Obama administration both saddens us and angers us," said Jaribu Hill, executive director of the Mississippi Workers' Center for Human Rights.

"We will not let Mr. Obama off the hook simply because he stands inside black skin, or because his campaign served to energize and inspire thousands of young people and people of color," she said.

Ban, the U.N. chief, was heartened at the adoption of the declaration by consensus and urged countries not at the conference to rejoin the fight against racism.

In Paris, France's foreign minister criticized the U.S. decision to stay away from an event featuring Ahmadinejad while declaring itself open for negotiations on Iran's nuclear program.

"More than a paradox, it could really be a mistake," Bernard Kouchner said.

But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent a note Tuesday thanking those nations that boycotted the Geneva conference.

"This decision restored a bit of sanity to a world in which an anti-racism conference turns its stage over to a Holocaust denier who expresses his desire to wipe Israel off the map," the note said, according to his office.

Most of Ahmadinejad's rhetoric was not new but its timing and high profile could complicate U.S. efforts to warm ties with the Islamic republic. Alejandro Wolff, the U.S. deputy ambassador to the United Nations, denounced what he called "the Ahmadinejad spectacle."

In Tehran, some 200 people gathered at the airport to give Ahmadinejad a hero's welcome as he returned home.

Iranian state TV described him as having defended Palestinian rights against a racist regime. The official IRNA news agency quoted lawmaker Mohammad Reza Bahonar as saying that Ahmadinejad's speech in Geneva was a "great achievement for (Iran's ruling) system."

The U.N. said it expelled 13 people Tuesday from the conference, including members of Jewish and Iranian groups that disrupted Ahmadinejad's speech.

"At the United Nations we demand that conferences and debates be held in a spirit of mutual respect and dignity," Heuze said.
