Life isn't just suffering (Ven. Thanissaro)

American Tibetan Buddhist nun Pema Chodron
Tan Geoff tells this story about the first noble truth: "He showed me the brightness of the world."

That's how my teacher, Ajahn Fuang, once characterized his gratitude to his teacher, Ajahn Lee [Dhammadaro, student of Ajahn Mun]. His words took me by surprise.

I had only recently come to study with him, still fresh from a school where I had learned that serious Buddhists took a negative, pessimistic view of the world.

Yet, here was a monk who had given his life over to the practice of the Buddha's Teachings speaking of the world's brightness.

Of course, by "brightness" he wasn't referring to the joys of the food, arts, travel, sports, family life, or any of the other sections of the Sunday paper.

The happiest couple in the world...and the most miserable. I want a divorce! - Oh yeah? 💩
.
He was talking about a better and deeper happiness that comes from within us. As I came to know him, I gained a sense of how deeply happy he was.

He may have been skeptical about human pretenses, but I'd never describe him as pessimistic or negative. "Realistic" would be closer to the truth.

Yet, for a long time I couldn't shake the sense of paradox I felt. How could the pessimism of translated Buddhist texts find embodiment in such a solidly happy person?

Only when I began to look directly at the early sutras did I realize that what I thought was paradox was actually irony.

Ironically, Buddhism, which gives such a positive view of a human being's potential for finding true happiness, could be branded in the West as "negative and pessimistic."

Ouch.  Ouch. Ouch.
There's a rumor that, "'Life is suffering' is Buddhism's first principle," the first noble truth, according to the Buddha. It's a rumor with good credentials. It is spread by well-intentioned and well-respected academics and Dharma teachers alike. But it is a rumor, nonetheless.

The truth about the Four Noble Truths is far more interesting.

The Buddha taught four ennobling (enlightening) truths — not one — about life:
  1. There is suffering (disappointment, pain, stress)
  2. There is a cause of suffering
  3. There is an end of suffering
  4. There is a path of practice that puts an end to suffering.
These truths, taken as a whole, are very optimistic. They're practical. It's a problem-solving approach — the way a doctor approaches an illness (pain), a mechanic a faltering engine. Identify the problem and look for its cause. Then put an end to the problem by eliminating its cause.

What's special about the Buddha's approach is that the problem he approaches is the whole of human (and deva) suffering. The solution he offers is something humans (and devas) can do for themselves.

Just as a physician with a surefire cure for measles is no longer afraid of measles, the Buddha isn't afraid of any aspect of suffering. Having experienced pleasure and happiness free of all conditions, he's intrepid.

He's not afraid to point out suffering and disappointment inherent in places where most of us would rather not see them — the conditioned pleasures we cling to.

He teaches beings not to deny suffering and disappointment, not to run away, but to stand still and face them, to examine them carefully. That way — by understanding them — we can discern a cause and put an end to it, a total end. How confident can one get? More

"Yoga Hosers" w/ Glam-Thrax (free movie)

We were not inspired by Kevin Smith of all people, not at all. We love yoga for yoga.

Yoga Hosers (free movie with ads PG-13)
(YouTube Movies & TV) Here's a comedy about two teenage yoga enthusiasts who team up with a legendary man-hunter to battle with an ancient evil presence that is threatening their major party plans.

Yoga Hosers
is an American comedy-horror film written and directed by Kevin Smith. It is a spin-off of Smith's 2014 horror film Tusk and stars Smith's daughter Harley Quinn Smith, Lily-Rose Depp, and her dad, world-famous Johnny Depp.

It's the second film in Smith's True North Trilogy, which world premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.

PLOT: Colleen Collette and Colleen McKenzie are two 15-year-old girls who spend their days studying yoga with their guru, Yogi Bayer, and working an after-school job at a Manitoba, Canada, convenience store called "Eh-2-Zed."

They are also in a cover band called Glam-thrax with their tattooed 35-year-old drummer friend Ichabod. The two are invited to a party by popular senior Hunter Calloway, who is the object of Colleen M's affections.

The next day at school, the girls' history teacher informs the class that the Nazi Party once had influence in Winnipeg. Led by the self-proclaimed "Canadian Führer" Adrien Arcand and his right-hand man, Andronicus Arcane, the Canadian Nazis were once a great force of terror. Arcand was later arrested by Federal authorities, but Andronicus Arcane was never found. More

Elon Musk to FIGHT Mark Zuckerberg (video)

E! News, 6/22/23; Alex Hern (respected British newspaper The Guardian, 6/22/23); Pfc. Sandoval, Seth Auberon, Sheldon S., CC Liu (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Dear Diary, I will kick the living h*ll out of that li'l punk *ss b*tch anytime anywhere...

Who you call a "b*tch"?
In the red corner, the world’s richest manly man (human), and in the blue corner, the world’s richest and most effeminate millennial:

Twitter's Elon Musk (Tesla, PayPal, SpaceX) and Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg (Meta) have agreed to FIGHT in a cage match, after Musk jokingly suggested the bout in response to efforts by Meta to launch a Twitter competitor.

“I’m sure Earth can’t wait to be exclusively under Zuck’s thumb,” Musk tweeted on Wednesday in response to a post about Meta’s rumored Threads app.

The app, previously known inside Instagram as Project 92 and Barcelona, has been pitched to celebrities and influencers as a “stable place to build and grow” their audiences.

How did Elon Musk get so rich? Same as Bill Gates: selling us all out to the surveillance state.
.
I'll smoke that punk like weed. Ask Joe Rogan
“At least it will be ‘sane,’” Musk added. “Was worried there for a moment.” When a follower warned that the Twitter boss should watch his words around Zuckerberg, Musk responded: “I’m up for a cage match if he is lol.”

What could have been one of many half-thought-out tweets dashed off by Musk -- whose itchy posting finger has already brought him a libel suit from a British diver he labelled a “pedo[phile]” and an SEC demand for a lawyer to vet his missives after he falsely claimed to have “funding secured” to take Tesla private -- became rather more significant when Zuckerberg responded.

In a post on his verified Instagram account, Meta Chief Executive Officer Zuck shared a screenshot of Musk’s challenge with the caption: “Send Me Location.”

The danger for Musk is that Zuckerberg is, apparently, quite good at fighting. [He's been practicing to impress his Asian gal-pal, Priscilla, and/or to overcome his worldwide reputation as a wuss and dweeb.]

Both men seem to have limitless reserves of energy [and money], but where Musk applies that to running five separate companies at the same time, Zuckerberg prefers to get really, really serious about hobbies.

In the past he has spent periods learning Mandarin (Chinese), touring America (in what was widely seen as a dry run for an abortive presidential campaign), and only eating meat he killed with a bow and arrow [like Republican rocker Ted Nugent].

Recently, though, his hobby has been Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ), and when he made his competitive debut last month, he won two out of three bouts.

Amber, Johnny's nemesis, agrees with Grimes.
“Zuck’s been training,” said Elena Cresci, a former Guardian journalist and professional Muay Thai (Thai martial arts style kick boxing) champion, “whereas Elon Musk has been tweeting that he doesn’t train beyond throwing his kids up in the air. So on paper it’s [wuss] Zuck. He’s been having a good time doing his little BJJ competitions.’’

One wrinkle is the combatants’ sizes. At an estimated 1.87 meters (6ft 1in) and about 85kg (13stone 5lb), Musk is several weight classes above Zuckerberg, who measures a mere 1.71 meters (5ft 7ins) and less than 70kg (11stone).

All else being equal, that would put Musk at an advantage, even after taking account of the 12-year age gap between the two.

Musk is MUCH bigger [3==D~] than Zuck.
Elon Musk is just a lot bigger than [the Zucker], so he could just lie on top of him and hope for the best,” Cresci said. That’s not far off Musk’s actual fight plan.

“I have this great move that I call ‘The Walrus,’ where I just lie on top of my opponent & do nothing,” he tweeted.

The ultimate question for the fight, if it does occur, is whether Musk takes it seriously or treats the whole thing as a joke.

I went from Grimes to Amber Depp and back.
“I’ve coached a couple of white-collar fights, and how it usually goes is when it’s their first fight, they get overexcited and gas themselves out in the first round,” Cresci said. “But these are two men with a lot of money at their disposal, so they can pay for as much training as they want.

Look at YouTubers like Logan Paul, who are actually decent boxers now because they can afford to train with the best.”

Science: Who is the most beautiful? (sutra)

Emily Hodgkin (Mail Online, July 14, 2016); Amber Larson, CC Liu, Wisdom Quarterly
Android, Android in my hand, who is fairest in all the land? (stylecaster.com)
.
The symmetry of Amber Heard
Amber Heard [until recently Johnny Depp's wife] has the most beautiful face in the world, according to science -- followed by Kim Kardashian [who has perfect brows] and Kate Moss (who has a perfect forehead).
  • Johnny Depp's estranged [and possibly beaten] wife has the most beautiful face in the world.
  • Kim Kardashian came second according to scientific face mapping.
  • Kate Moss was third and had the perfect forehead.
  • Ancient Greeks claimed there was a "Golden Ratio" [Fibonacci series as the proportions for the most pleasing symmetry] for physical perfection.
Johnny Depp's estranged wife is the most beautiful woman in the world, according to facial mapping.

The Buddha's beauty
Amber Heard's face was found to be 91.85 per cent accurate to the Greek Golden Ratio of Beauty Phi -- which for thousands of years was thought to hold the secret formula of perfection.

Using the theory, computer mapping technology also found that Kim Kardashian had perfect eyebrows, Scarlett Johansson came out on top for her eyes, Rihanna's face shape was deemed the most beautiful, while Emily Ratajkowski's lips and Kate Moss's forehead were also praised. More

SUTRA: Giving and Gaining Beauty
Ven. Thanissaro (trans) Bhojana Sutta: "A Meal" (AN 5.37) edited by Wisdom Quarterly
Maitreya Future-Buddha statue outside Diskit Monastery, Himalayas (itisemriarticles)

"In giving a meal [dana, a generous act usually in support of a recluse's spiritual exertions as a sannyasin or Buddhist wandering ascetic or monastic], the donor gives five things to the recipient. What are those five?

"One gives life, beauty, happiness, strength, and quick-wittedness. Having given life, one gains a share of long life, either human or divine [when this karma bears fruit opportunistically].

"Having given beauty, one gains a share of beauty, either human or divine. Having given happiness, one gains a share of happiness, either human or divine. Having given strength, one has a share in strength, either human or divine. Having given quick-wittedness, one gains a share of quick-wittedness, either human or divine. In giving a meal, the donor gives these five things to the recipient."

The prudent person giving life, strength, beauty, quick-wittedness -- the wise person, a giver of happiness -- attains happiness. Having given life, strength, beauty, happiness, and quick-wittedness, one gains long life and status wherever one re-arises [is reborn].

Birthday: On Marilyn Monroe's death (video)

Seth Auberon, Ashley Wells, Crystal Quintero, Wisdom Quarterly; MMH; Wiki; Marilyn Monroe

Shhh, my blond hair was born in a bottle (1952).

Marilyn Monroe or Norma Jeane Mortenson (June 1, 1926-August 5, 1962) was an American model and actress assassinated for being Pres. John F. Kennedy's mistress and confidante.

"Live fast, die young," for although killed at 36, Monroe might not be nearly as famous as she is today if she had lived to 90.

CIA assassin confesses to murdering Monroe
(Unraveling the Matrix) The CIA, an organization based on Nazi tactics the US inherited after WW II, clandestinely kills people on a regular basis.

(M6) Rare collection of candid photos of Marilyn Monroe during her rise to stardom in 1952

The same is true of Che Guevara (hunted and killed), JFK (publicly executed for various reasons dealing with our military-industrial complex and its for-profit wars), Jesus (who offended Jewish priests and Roman militants), Bob Marley (murdered by injection to the toe with a virulent cancer strain), countless rock stars, and  other icons...

Has Jesus been upstaged by Che?
Happy birthday, Hollywood starlet, and welcome to the heartbreaking movie industry. That's fame and fast times in the U.S.

She is one of the most enduring sex symbols in America who became popular in the 1950s when she played stereotypically "dumb blonde" characters that were emblematic of the era's changing attitudes towards sexuality.

Monroe began her career as a pin-up model. After two short-lived film contracts, she was signed by 20th Century-Fox in 1951. The next year, scandalous nude photographs of her were featured in a popular calendar.

She became one of the most bankable Hollywood stars with leading roles in comedies such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), How to Marry a Millionaire (1953), and The Seven Year Itch (1955).

Disappointed in being typecast as a voluptuous dumb blond and underpaid, Monroe formed her own production company in 1955 and successfully fought for a better contract with Fox.

She received critical acclaim for her performances in Bus Stop (1956) and Some Like It Hot (1959), winning a Golden Globe for Best Actress for the latter.

      My government kills its stars.
Her last completed film was the drama The Misfits (1961). Troubled by mental health and addiction problems, Monroe died of an alleged accidental barbiturate overdose in 1962. She was actually killed for being too close to JFK and, ironically, knowing too much.

Marilyn Monroe continues to be a popular culture icon with some thanks to oddball shock rock star Marilyn Manson. More

Sexy Easter film reviews: Heaven is real

CC Liu, Irma Quintero, Ashley Wells, Seth Auberon, Pat Macpherson, Wisdom Quarterly; SCPR/FilmWeek with Larry Mantle and critics Tim Cogshell, Henry Sheehan, Charles Solomon

      Jesus has a pony?
Let's give this pony to Jesus to ride in on.
(SPE) Based on a book by a Christian minister whose 11-y.o. son died (had an NDE), went to a heaven -- perhaps the celestial World of the Four Great Kings (Catumaharajika Deva Loka) or the Thirty-Three (Tavatimsa), and returned to tell about it.

Jesus rides in on an ass, the keychain
The boy (who is based on Colton Burpo) reports that Jesus is white with a tunic and a beard and swears he has a pony, just like his father expects heaven to be. It's an Easter miracle! Or it could be that visions of "heaven" (sagga) during a near-death experience accommodate our views and expectations, as reported by the spirit Seth (Seth Speaks: The Eternal Validity of the Soul) as channeled by Jane Roberts -- whether those expectations are heavenly or hellish.

St. Issa's Jewish Heaven on Earth
Happy Patriots' Day, Mass. Happy Holy Week, Christendom. The New Testament says Jesus rode in on an ass (WARNING: do not click!), butt this is not what the Bible's author(s) had in mind, nor this

SCPR reviewers talk about the week's new film releases including Greg Kinnear in "Heaven is for Real," H2O in "Watermark" (about dams, their consequences, and our relationship to water), Johnny Depp as Him or a computer program or virus in "Transcendence," flagging Woody in "Fading Gigolo," Jane Goodall in "Bears," Kristin Wiig, Hailee Steinfeld, Guy Pearce, and Nick Nolte in "Hateship Loveship," money-thriller "13 Sins,"  "Hank and Asha," Japanese animation from "Short Peace," Marlon Wayans in "Haunted House 2," and more. LISTEN

Wanna? - What, hunt for 'shrooms? (CH)
Holy water on Holy Week comes to a head on Easter, which is based on a sacred entheogenic mushroom forage rather than bunny egg hunt. These practices are Pagan throwbacks. Yet that does not stop Catholics, Christians, and some Eastern Orthodox adherents from wanting more coverage. Well, Hollywood is obliging. And that is rarely a good thing for truth, accuracy, or the long run. So first the nice movies then the perverted sexy ones:

      Watermark

Water is precious but treated poorly.
(TD) Beautifully weaving together diverse stories from the USA and Mexico (Colorado river, etc.), Canada, India and Bangladesh (Ganges), China (Yangste and the largest human construction in history), and around the globe, this documentary shows in stunning detail humanity's relationship with water through the ages. It expresses the magnitude of our need for this rapidly vanishing resource. By showing the various roles water plays in all of our lives, this breathtaking and haunting doc paints a vivid portrait of our planet, illustrating the magnificent force of nature that is being depleted before our eyes. Directed by Jennifer Baichwal, Edward Burtynsky, released in April 2014.

      Bears

      Disney Ambassador Jane Goodall (BT)
(CM) "Bears" is in theaters today from DisneyNature not for Easter but for Earth Day. In an epic story of breathtaking scale with the help of super heroine Jane Goodall, this new True Life Adventure "Bears," which showcases a year in the life of two mother bears as they impart life lessons to their impressionable newborn cubs. Set against a majestic Alaskan backdrop teeming with life, their journey begins as winter comes to an end and they emerge from hibernation to face the bitter cold. The world outside is exciting -- but risky -- as the tiny cubs' playful descent down the mountain carries with it a looming threat of avalanches.  The brown bear families must work together to find food, while staying safe from predators in the wilderness, including an ever-present wolf pack.

      Short Peace

Short Peace (ショート・ピース Shōto Pīsu) is a compilation of four short anime films produced by Sunrise and Shochiku. The films were released in Japanese theaters in July 2013 and will be screened in North America in April 2014. Sentai Filmworks have licensed the films for North America. A video game based on the series, Rinko Tsukigime's Longest Day, released in Japan as Short Peace: Tsukigime Rinko no Ichiban Nagai Hi (ショートピース 月極蘭子のいちばん長い日), was developed by Crispy's Inc. in collaboration with Grasshopper Manufacture's Goichi Suda, and published by Bandai Namco Games for the PlayStation 3.

The Galapagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden
Let's live on a tropical island, like in the Tropic of Cancer maybe (zeitgeistfilms)

Sexual intrigue, tropical love, and utopia
Fleeing conventional society, a Berlin doctor and his mistress start a new life on uninhabited Floreana Island. But after the international press sensationalizes the sexual exploits of the Galapagos' "Adam and Eve," others flock there -- including a self-styled Swiss Family Robinson and a gun-toting Viennese Baroness and her two lovers. Clashing personalities are aggravated by the island community's lusty free-love ethos. And when some of the islanders disappear, suspicions of murder hang in the air leaving an unsolved mystery that remains the subject of local lore even today. To bring this extraordinary story to life, newly unearthed home movies of these original back-to-nature drop-outs, testimonies of modern day islanders, stunning HD footage of native flora and fauna, and powerful voice performances are interwoven. Macabre yet inspiring, "The Galapagos Affair" is a gripping parable of adventure and utopian dreams gone awry. This biography/documentary (NR) is directed by Dayna Goldfine and Dan Geller. The cast includes Cate Blanchett, Diane Kruger, Connie Nielsen, Sebastian Koch, Thomas Kretschmann, Gustaf Skarsgård, and Josh Radnor.

      Fading Gigolo

Hey, they weren't my biological daughters
(MC) Accused child molested (WQ) Woody Allen made a movie about a threesome, prostitution, and a Don Juan gigolo? No, some John did. He just co-stars. Synopsis: Fioravante decides to become a professional Don Juan as a way of making money to help his cash-strapped friend, Murray. With Murray as "manager," the duo quickly find themselves caught up in the crosscurrents of love and money. (Featuring John Turturro, Sofia Vergara, Vanessa Paradis, Liev Schreiber, Sharon Stone, Woody Allen, and not directed by an accused pedophile whom Scarlett Johansson defends as unindicted and Mia Farrow condemns as unconvicted).

      Under the Skin

Earth boys are easy, and I'm a bad deva.
REVIEW: Shelly and J.S. talk about crude sex goddess Scarlett Johansson's role in Johnathan Glazer's film, and Scarlett chimes in, too. What is great about this very creepy "alien sex fiend" movie is that a lot of it was filmed with unsuspecting men using hidden cameras. They don't know this is Johansson, and they don't know it's a movie. She picks up hitchhikers and kills them. But they're happy to get in the car because a beautiful female is doing the inviting. One is reminded of a certain yakshini who recently made the news (FTZ).

      Nymph()maniac

"Nymphomaniac: Volume II" from Denmark and starring Charlotte Gainsbourg is directed by Lars Van Trier co-starring Shia LaBeouf and Willem Dafoe. It is the continuation of Joe's sexually dictated life as it delves into the darker aspects of her adult life and what led to her being in Seligman's care.

      Transcendence

We love Will power! - Me, too, kids.
Depp as Dr. Will Caster examines the promise and threat of AI (artificial intelligence) as he works to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments make him famous, but they also make him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. As they attempt to destroy "Will," they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed -- to be a participant in his own transcendence. Should his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, stop him? Can they? Will's thirst for knowledge evolves into a what seems an omnipresent quest for power.
