Valentine's Day (aka Saint Valentine's Day, Feast of St. Valentine [1]) is celebrated annually on February 14th [2].

This celebration of going from Lust to Love like the Go Go's, it originated as a Christian feast day honoring a martyr named Valentine, and through later folk traditions it has also become a significant cultural, religious and commercial celebration of romance and love in many regions of the world [3, 4].

There are a number of martyrdom stories associated with various Saint Valentines connected to February 14th [5], including an account of the imprisonment of Saint Valentine of Rome for ministering to Christians persecuted under the Roman Empire in the third century [6, 7].

According to an early tradition, Saint Valentine restored sight to the blind daughter of his jailer [8]. Numerous later additions to the legend have better related it to the theme of love: Tradition maintains that Saint Valentine performed weddings for Christian soldiers who were forbidden to marry by the Roman emperor [7]. An 18th-century embellishment to the legend claims he wrote the jailer's daughter a letter signed "Your Valentine" as a farewell before his execution [9].

The 8th-century Gelasian Sacramentary recorded the celebration of the Feast of Saint Valentine on February 14th [10, 11]. The day became associated with romantic love in the 14th and 15th centuries, when notions of courtly love flourished, apparently by association with the "lovebirds" of early spring.

In 18th-century England, it grew into an occasion for couples to express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines").

Valentine's Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid [who acts like the India god Kama, Greek Eros and Aphrodite, Roman Venus, and Buddhist Mara].

Las Vegas has gotten so boring. Is that all there is? Wait, this just in. Pimp shoots rapper in Maserati on the strip. Rapper shoots back, peels out into intersection, and smashes into taxicab which blows up killing occupants. Rapper dies of injuries. SUV-driving pimp gets away. Sounds like Sin City is more exciting than before. Wait, this just in. Rapper was only an "aspiring rapper," pimp did not have the force of the Pimp Hand so held a cowardly gun instead. Senseless violence and high strangeness is nothing new in Nevada -- with its nuclear testing ground, underground black-budge military bases, ETs, UFOs, legalized prostitution, and government-approved-gambling defrauding millions of visitors a year in the name of "entertainment."

 (Defrauding? Yes, if gamblers knew their fixed/rigged disadvantage and the other ingenious methods that guarantee the House wins over time while calling it an "even" bet, FRAUD would be the word used).

Las Vegas Strip suspect to be extradited

A man suspected in a shooting on the Las Vegas Strip that led to three people's deaths is scheduled to appear in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom Monday for an extradition proceeding.

 

He was arrested Thursday at a Studio City apartment complex, authorities said. Los Angeles police and FBI agents surrounded the apartment complex in the 4100 block of Arch Drive about noon and ordered 26-year-old Ammar Harris to surrender, which he did without incident.

Harris is being held on suspicion of murder and is expected to be extradited back to Nevada.

 

"This arrest is much more than just taking Ammar Harris," said Las Vegas Sheriff Doug Gillespie, speaking at police headquarters Thursday near the Strip. "The citizens of our community as well as tourists who visit and work in the Las Vegas Valley are entitled to a safe community." More

Matt Groening, creator of the Simpsons, began with a comic strip entitled Life in Hell. It depicted life in Los Angeles through the eyes of rabbits. The economic collapse has led to the flagship weekly periodical (the LA Weekly) not being able to pay its comics after 22 years of strips.

According to a CNN profile, Matt Greoening’s “Life in Hell” is being dropped by its flagship paper, LA Weekly, after 22 years:

CNN: To the root of animation, cartooning: You’re still doing “Life in Hell,” correct?

Groening: Um, yes, but … well, I feel like the floodwaters are rising.

CNN: Really?

Groening: Yeah, the alternative newsweeklies are really struggling. In fact, this coming week will be my final week after 22 years in the LA Weekly. I and all the other cartoonists are being dismissed because they can’t afford to pay.

CNN: Have you considered just doing it online?

Groening: Yes! Yes, I’m toying with that. But it’s very strange. I’ve been doing the weekly comic strip for 29 years, “The Simpsons” weekly for 20 years, the “Futurama” weekly for five years and then a little break and then the four movies, and then the “Simpsons” movie…so I have a series of ongoing deadlines. So the idea of establishing a Web presence that I’ll have to feed on an ongoing basis doesn’t give me a lot of pep. (laughs) One more treadmill. (Source: The Daily Cartoonist).

LIFE IN HELL

Life in Hell started in 1977 as a self-published comic book Groening used to describe life in Los Angeles to his friends. Groening photocopied and distributed it in a small "punk" corner of the record store in which he worked, Licorice Pizza on Sunset Boulevard. Life in Hell debuted as a comic strip in the avant-garde Wet magazine in 1978, to which Groening made his first professional cartoon sale.

The first strip, entitled "Forbidden Words," appeared in the September/October issue. Popular in the underground, Life in Hell was picked up by the Los Angeles Reader (an alternative weekly newspaper where Groening also worked as a typesetter, editor, paste-up artist and music critic) in 1980, where it began appearing weekly.

The strip was frequently a serial, discussing various topics such as "Love is Hell," a 1984 "13-chapter miniseries" pontificating on love and relationships. More>>

Going from Jobless to Topless

NOTE: "Sexual misconduct" (kamesu micchacara) expresses itself in many forms. Generally, it refers to hurting oneself, someone else, or others in the gratification of desires.

Little known is the fact that simply enticing others -- for example, by appearing naked in an appealing way (think sexting, magazines, or porn) -- is also karma productive of future misery. It's like offering drugs or alcohol to other; great (albeit unseen) harm is being done to oneself.

Just doing it for the money or to survive does not nullify the impersonal consequences. Unpleasant, unwanted results are to be expected. Strangely, this also holds true for those who only encourage the conduct (such as managers, filmmakers, and advisers).

The tough job market is prompting a growing number of women across the country to dance in strip clubs, appear in adult movies, or pose for magazines like Hustler.
