The Quakers really are something else. It's not for show, and there are no oats whatsoever (that was some non-Quaker's marketing gimmick), no big buckle hats or shoes, just progressive British-German thinking, which may sound like an oxymoron except that we're nothing in the West if not good at dreaming up lofty ideals.

It must be an extraterrestrial Scandinavian influence of Nordic ETs spreading their liberal views on how human life should be engaged in by Earthlings (in and around Northern Europe).

How else might one explain their forward thinking in an Old World setting? These thoughts of Enlightenment, egalitarianism, peace, fraternity, and prosperity for all are not the natural inclinations of people who travel -- as Columbus and Crew did -- across the Atlantic to enslave and oppress others.

The Quakers did not come to conquer. Though they were about 25% of the "Pilgrims," the European settler-colonial invaders from England, Germany, Spain, and other imperialistic countries, their goal was to survive and thrive in the "New" World away from the constraints of the Old, not by oppression but cooperation.

Who were these mysterious "Friends," and what did they believe in that made them pacifists, independent thinkers, and leave-Europe-behinders? They weren't Puritans, which is a surprising because they are into clean living. And they aren't Amish or Mennonites speaking Pennsylvania Deutsch ("Dutch" that's actually German).

Friends (Quakers) oppose all war as inconsistent with [the Protestant God's] will. As every person is a child of this god, we recognize Divine Light also in our adversaries. Violence and injustice deny this reality and violate the teaching of [the God's son] Jesus and other prophets.

Friends challenge their governments and take personal risks in the cause of peace. We urge one another to refuse to participate in war as soldiers or as arms manufacturers [which is completely inconsistent with principles and teachings of the historical Buddha as well].

Become an instrument of peace. At every opportunity, be peacemakers in your homes, workplaces, and communities. Steep yourself in the power of the universal Spirit [Brahman?]

Examine your actions [karma, intentional deeds] for the seeds of violence, degradation, and destructiveness.

Overcome the emotions that lie at the root of violence and nurture instead a spirit of reconciliation and love. Come to know the oneness [unity, yoga] of all creation and oppose the destruction of the natural world.

They gave a fascinating joint interfaith Dharma talk about Zen (Mahayana) Buddhism and Judaism and Catholicism with many similarities to Quakerism. They then answered questions from Friends in the audience. It is well worth a watch!

I recently found that both Hicksite Quakers and Philosophical Taoists believe that the most important thing is following the Light. Philosophical Taoism isn't a religion, it is a way of life. There is no dogma, no creed, anyone who follows the Way of Light is probably a Philosophical Taoist even if they know nothing about it.
• (@donalddyer5597) (edited) There. are big differences between Zen and Quakerism.  Zen has a hierarchical structure.  There are head monks, junior monks, and so on. Plus in Zen, unlike Quakerism, there are masters and their students. For me this is problematic because of the potential for abuse.  There have been many reports of Zen masters abusing their students. I have practiced Zen for over twenty years and now have shifted my faith to the Quaker path. Not having clergy is a big draw for me. It seems that this lack of hierarchy limits the potential for abuse

Unable to gain acceptance in England, the Quakers would soon leave the place of their origin altogether and try their luck in a brave New World on another continent.

George Fox (1624-1691 O.S.) was an English Dissenter and a founder of the Religious Society of Friends, commonly known as the Quakers.

The son of a Leicestershire weaver, he lived in times of social upheaval and war. He rebelled against religious and political authorities by proposing an unusual, uncompromising approach to the Christian faith.

He travelled throughout Britain as a dissenting preacher, performed hundreds of healings, and was often persecuted by the disapproving authorities [3].

In 1669, he married Margaret Fell, widow of wealthy supporter Thomas Fell; she was a leading Friend (Quaker).

His ministry expanded, and he toured North America and the three Low Countries in Europe.

He was arrested and jailed numerous times for his radical beliefs. He spent his final decade working in London to organize the expanding Quaker movement.

Despite disdain from some Puritans and Anglicans, he was viewed with respect by the American Quaker convert William Penn and the Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell. More

(Nature) A deposit of high-quality gold ore containing around 1,000 metric tons (1,100 US tons) of the precious metal has been discovered in central China, according to Chinese state media.

Valued at approximately 600 billion yuan or U.S. 83 billion dollars, the discovery could be considered the largest and most lucrative reservoir of gold ever uncovered, surpassing the 900 metric tons estimated to lie within the mother of all gold reserves, South Deep mine in South Africa.

• What kind of story suppression is this? A mere $83 billion worth of gold? There was WAY more gold or found in Uganda in 2022: 31 million tonnes of ore -- with an estimated 320,000 tonnes of extractable pure gold:
• If one troy ounce is worth $2,700.00 then 320,000 tonnes, according to my handheld calculator, would today be worth $[ERROR], a number so high we have to hire a mathematician to calculate it.
• How many ounces in a ton of gold? The answer is a metric tonne, which is 32,150.7 troy ounces. So multiply that by $2,7000, and then do it 319,000 more times. It equals: $86,806,890 + $27,691,397,910,000 = That, in our innumerate opinion, equals about 27 to 28 trillion dollars, yes? Or $27,778,204,800,000 to be exact. So what in the world is a mere $83 billion (from 1,100 metric tons) in China? It's not a fraction worth mentioning, except that China is good to go at extracting right now. By our calculation, 1,000 metric tons would be worth $86,806,890,000 (=1,000 x 32,150.7 x $2,700).

The Geological Bureau of Hunan Province announced the detection of 40 gold veins within a depth of 1.2 miles (2 kms) in the northeast Hunan county of Pingjiang.

These alone were thought to contain 300 metric tons of gold, with 3D modeling suggesting additional reserves may be found to a depth of 3 kms.

The massive find was made in Pingjiang County, well within undisputed Chinese territory. "Many drilled rock cores showed visible gold," says bureau prospector Chen Rulin.

Core samples suggest every metric ton of ore could contain as much as 138 grams (nearly 5 ounces) of gold – an extraordinary level of quality considering ore excavated from underground mines is considered high grade if it contains more than 8 grams.

China already dominates the world's gold market with reserves considered to be in excess of 2,000 tons earlier in 2024, its mining industry contributing around 10 percent of the global output.

The Revival of the Buddhist Faith in Siberia

(Journeyman Pictures) Buryatian Buddhists (Oct. 1995) After decades of Russian/Soviet repression, Buddhism is flowering again in South-Eastern Siberia. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the revival has been going from strength to strength.

Once more the Buryat people wake to the sound of Buddhist conch shells and ritual chanting by lamas. The colored robes of Tibetan monks and gold topped temples are a common sight in this isolated land that has been Russia's cultural center of Buddhism for 300 years.

The Buddhist monastery's head lama is a pillar of the community, and locals seek his advice on just about everything from marriage to medical problems.

On a typical morning his office is full of peasants awaiting his wise words. At the turn of the century this part of Siberia boasted 46 Buddhist temples. Most were destroyed under communism, when it was decided religious faith was not necessary to a good life [for the state].

Now the ordinary people are rebuilding that spiritual practice all over the former Soviet Republic [or USSR, even recognizing that Russian Dictator Vladimir Lenin's grandparents (Lenins/Ulyanov were Mongolian from Buddhist Kalmykia, and his mother was half Jewish)].
