Psychedelic elephants: animals get high

The drunkard said, "They're here, they're there, pink elephants [are] everywhere!"

Oh no, it's not just humans. Elephants and other animals SEEK out psychedelics. (Think of the magic mushroom-loving reindeer of the Arctic circle, who not only search for Amanita muscaria or Fly agaric hallucinogenic mushrooms in the snow but also lick "yellow" snow in the hopes that the reindeer responsible for the deposit found some, just as shamans filter the strong entheogenic compounds in magic mushrooms for their followers and patients). There are humans and animals in Nepal, Turkey, and the Hindu Kush region who feast on hallucinogenic "mad honey," derived from rhododendron (grayanotoxins) and other plants collected by bees.

Don't get high, Kids. Meditate to see visions.

Mushrooms, contrary to what many might think, are not plants. They are a whole different kingdom, the fungi studied by mycologists. But there are plenty of plants -- like the components of Ayahuasca of the Amazon Jungle/Rainforest, which is comprised of three plant pharmacy ingredients, strangely, not the same three -- that are entheogens. There is Syrian Rue, there are alkaloids galore in rainforests, and animals are looking:

• Even in the Buddha's time, among the Sakas (Shakyas, Indo-Scythians), there was a "magical" entheogenic/psychedelic drug known in Vedic Sanskrit as soma (haoma in the Avestan language of the Indo-Iranians/Aryans west of ancient Jambudvipa). No one knows what exactly was in this concoction, but it seems to have included powerful local cannabis, kumis, and the mysterious psychedelic known as blue lotus. Did wandering ascetics (sramanas, shamans) partake of it for divine visions or did warrior princes imbibe it for guidance and/or to go berserk in battle like Berserkers?

Experimentation beyond science?

Certainly not. Drugs are bad and go against the fourth of the Five Precepts incumbents on Buddhists. If any thing (drug, food, behavior) occasions heedlessness (the violating of precepts or engaging in any of the Ten Courses of Unwholesome Conduct), it should and must be avoided and abstained from. Who in their right mind would take something that destroyed all one's virtue. One often hears of people who say, "I would never [fill in the blank with any bad thing]...unless I were drunk or high." Therefore, one should not get drunk or high because to do so is to engage in harmful karma that will come back to one, and it won't matter that one was high, as when drunk drivers get imprisoned just for driving drunk even though they didn't hit anyone yet. And when they do hit someone, it will not have been "on purpose" (with intention), so how can they be held liable? They can. They are. If one murders or steals while high, it does not matter to judges, juries, or the general public that the perpetrator excuses the behavior by saying, "Yeah, but I was high." Stay sober. Praise sobriety. Study plants:

Get high on life or the ecstatic meditations (jhanas), with samadhi in mind, opening the third eye (dibba cakkhu), stimulating the pineal gland in natural and nonharmful ways. Try pranayama to alter consciousness in a way that does not destroy one. There's a fine line between character-building and soul-destroying (even though "soul" is not really the best word to use as it has misleading connotations) experiences. Drugs are a kind of Russian roulette. Find a shaman, a guide, a discipline before f'ing around and finding out. Will kids find out? Don't they always? It is an explorer's function to go on a quest. So let it be a spiritual quest of mind-expanding "soul" searching that brings about the end of suffering by heightening compassion and wisdom. That's what Wisdom Quarterly is saying. Entering the World's Largest Cave

This cave is so massive that it has a completely self-sustaining ecosystem with its own climate conditions. Hundreds of meters underground, clouds like the ones we're used to seeing in the sky form inside this enclosed cave. Son Doong even has an untouched prehistoric rainforest hidden far below the surface and a vast underground river.

Flora and fauna

From transparent fish to colorful monkeys, over 250 endemic [found nowhere else but here] plant and animal species live in this underground world. Seven new animal species were recently discovered here and are unique to this place.

Stretching 5.6 miles (9 kilometers) in length, this cave encloses 38.5 million cubic meters of space. Its passages are so enormous that a 40-story skyscraper could fit inside. Its giant stalagmites rise like towers from ancient cities. Walking inside, it’s impossible not to feel as small as a tiny bug.

Son Doong even contains phytokarst rocks, which move towards the sun like semi-living organisms. Rare cave pearls and many other unique formations are also found here. For 3 million years since its formation, the world had no idea about this cave's existence until it was fully explored in 2009 in Vietnam. Now, it’s time for you to see the largest cave on earth. Why would we have a day to celebrate crushes? Some say these are literal. We crush cans. We recycle. If we're smart, we pre-cycle (plan ahead about what will become of the waste) and use banana leaves instead of plastic plates or big rolls of seaweed instead of those maddening packaged ones in individual wrappers where the container weighs more than the contents. Of course, we all know what a crush is. And we should know it isn't harmless. Mara Devaputra (Kamadeva, Eros, Cupid) delights. It hurts pining, waxing, wishing, hoping, wondering, casting our hearts like lures into the sea to see if anything is biting. Those bites won't much matter. There's just the One who either got away or was never caught. And we idealize. We weave a fantasy that becomes a petard. We're hoisted by our own petard. We grow tendrils and then cry when the mass of vines grows so heavy it tears off the fence or pole. Oh, the hole! In our hearts, there are many spaces, but in all the space, there's only you. You send me, Crush. Woe upon us. If only, if only there were a way to snap out of it. If only there were a way to be mindful of the moment instead. This moment I'm free, I'm fine, everything's good -- ah, to be there. Where? Here. When? Now. Be here now? Yes. But Woo Deng is soo deng cuuuute!

LA hike: last moonlight walk of year

At the top of the walk there's a big waterfall.

Join us on Friday the 13th for the final moonlight walk (easy hike) of the year. Mindfulness means paying attention to the present moment rather than projecting an interpretation or reacting to it (with liking, disliking, or confusion). This walk in nature is a beautiful opportunity to practice while the weather cools and the company is lovely.

Stay on the trail, with others, and docent guide

WHAT HAPPENED? The crowd gathered, about 35 in all, and we plunged into the woods. The moon was out and visible as was the smoke from the fires to the east. We split into groups to see the native plants and walk mindfully, aware of all our senses to identify edible and medicinal plants, to consider survival tactics of keeping warm, hydrated, safe, and fed. The Eaton Canyon area is one of the most visited among locals but is less known around town. It's no Griffith Park, Runyon Canyon, or East Fork in Azusa. We explored Native American plant knowledge and lore, the Buddhist principles of mindfulness (sati) and calm, deep listening and remaining joyful in overwhelming times. There was a great deal of conversation, friend making, nature appreciation, and snacks at the end. Although this was the last "moonlight walk" until May of next year, there are ongoing monthly "plant walk" every third Sunday of the month from 10:00-11:30 am. Just bring sturdy shoes, hat, camera, and a water bottle. Walk begins inside the EC Nature Center. (And while this location will be closed during Tuesday (9/17/24) night's full moon, there are nearby trails that will be wide open for the experience, such as Cobb Estate up to White City.
