In the Oasis of my Dreams

Waterfall in the oasis of Chebika
Audio edition Masaru Emoto
Western Tunisia is a dry and dusty land, an expansive landscape the color of sunbaked ochre. When a cluster of green palms or a milky-blue pool appears on the arid landscape, it stands out like a mirage. In the oasis of Chebika (aka Qasr el-Shams or roughly "Castle of the Sun") the sights can be literally refreshing. Here, a spring-fed waterfall tumbles down eroded rock formations that meld into the mud and brick ruins of Old Chebika, the town's original settlement. What glimmering watering hole would be complete without a few fringing palm trees? The duo arching over the pool here offer just a hint at the large grove flourishing in the gorge and flatlands below the canyon. More + MAP

Chebika is an oasis that lies at the foot of the Djebel el Negueb Mountains. It was once a Roman outpost, but later became a mountain refuge for the Berber people. Only several hundred live in this city today. Many scenes of the popular movies Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and The English Patient were filmed in this area.
