Feds accuse vice officer of forcing women into sex

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A longtime police officer forced women to have sex with him under threat of an arrest, pressured others to help cover up crimes, and [shot a victim to death then] lied to federal investigators when he said he'd never had sex with prostitutes, according to charges unveiled Monday.

(March 11, 2019) Columbus vice squad Officer Andrew Mitchell, 55, was arrested Monday and faces a detention hearing this week. He is charged with witness tampering, obstruction of justice, making a false statement to federal investigators, and deprivation of rights under color of law, the language used to describe crimes committed by police officers while on duty.

A federal indictment accused Mitchell, a 30-year veteran, of arresting two different women and forcing them to have sex before he would release them. Later, during the federal investigation, Mitchell lied when he told the FBI he'd never had sex with a prostitute, since Mitchell knew "he has had sex with numerous prostitutes, including having paid women money for sex," according to the indictment.

Committing the alleged crimes while on duty is "a nightmarish breach of trust," said Ben Glassman, the U.S. attorney for the southern half of Ohio. "We rely on the police to serve and protect us... More

Sheriff Lee Baca once ran the nation's largest urban jail system but is on the threshold of a possible six-month prison sentence Wednesday.

 

[He quickly left office to try to avoid indictment and prosecution for numerous crime and years of official corruption.] In a dramatic turn for a former top cop, retired Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca was due in a federal courtroom to plead guilty to a single felony charge of lying to investigators, prosecutors said.

 

Baca, 73, falsely told investigators he had no idea his deputies planned to approach and threaten an FBI agent in 2011 because she was probing allegations of corruption and civil rights violations inside his former lockups, the U.S. attorney's office said. [In fact, he put them up to it, acting like a Mafia crime boss directing henchmen to terrorize witnesses.]

 

The plea deal calls for a maximum of six months behind bars, but the actual sentence will be determined by a federal judge, according to court filings obtained by the Daily News.

Under his [sweet] plea agreement, Baca now [confesses to the felony charge that] he secretly directed deputies to "isolate" an inmate suspected of being an FBI informant and "do everything but put handcuffs" on the FBI agent sniffing around his jails. ["Everything"? Does that include fitting for cement shoes and driving her to LA's MacArthur Park Lake?]

 

As a result, two deputies approached the agent outside her home on September 26, 2011, and threatened her with arrest, prosecutors said.

 

Officials said it was during a 2013 meeting with the FBI and assistant U.S. attorneys that Baca denied any participation in the 2011 meetings.

Yet investigations into their net worth paint a very different picture — that of nuns and brothers with billions' worth of carefully sheltered assets worldwide.

Irish government leaders said Wednesday they expect the 18 religious orders involved in abusing children in workhouse-style schools to pay a much greater share of compensation to 14,000 state-recognized victims.
