What is a "mosh pit" where people slam dance, pogo, jump in unison, skank, swing, spin, dive off the stage, surf on top of the crowd, throw fists like idiots, dance, posture, and generally shove, grope, and elbow each other? It's a celebration of the music, a now commonplace expression of aggression and excitement, like war games and reenactments, preparation for a return to the School of Hard Knocks that is life for fans of extreme music (hard rock, punk rock, crossover, heavy metal, hybrids of the many -cores and subgenres that proliferate). "It's a positive outlet for negative emotions."
