Getting into the USA via Tijuana, Mexico

At the USA/Mexico border: Tijuana πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡²πŸ‡½
(Joe HaTTab) What is Tijuana? It is the biggest city along the border. Joe H travels the world to film interesting locations (and seems to have the help of a voiceover to present what he finds). Instagram   ➭ joe_hattab. Huge thanks to my friend Baja Cali Food for all the help in TJ. The food of Mexico is full of fried fat and many unhealthy things to tickle the tastebuds with too much spice, salt, chiles, processed oils, flours, and chemicals. It's garbage on the streets. Welcome to Fats Ville. Eat organic in someone's home with fresh herbs and handmade tortillas, and it might be healthy. But fried on a roach coach and sold for cheap? Tasty garbage. bajacalifood @bajacalifood ● Joe's IG ➭ joe_hattab

Magic? How to levitate over Grand Canyon

D. Copperfield; Mystic Knights; Dhr. Seven, Jen (Dharma Bud Meditation), Wisdom Quarterly
Who could fly, even with stage wires, across the great expanse of the smaller U.S. Grand Canyon or the far larger though far less famous Copper Canyon of Mexico? Not a trickster magician.

First we get still, then stillness sets in.
Wisdom Quarterly
has always been interested in one magic feat above the others: the possibility of real yogic levitation. This is achievable through successful stillness (samadhi) meditation. But what does it take to still the mind, to still thought, to still the heart, to still emotions, memories, intrusive thoughts and feelings, loops, ruminating, planning, distractions, monkey mind frenzy, restlessness, sleepiness, laziness, lassitude, boredom, inattentiveness, ADHD, yearning, pining, speculating, skepticism, in brief, the many and varied manifestations of the Five Hindrances?

The goal is not control. It's not being controlled.
Those are the first five obstacles to even remaining on the cushion to begin to get still. Stillness temporarily purifies the mind/heart so that coherence can set in, when everything is in its place and doing its thing. That is the beginning of samma-samadhi, what we have for so long been misled to think means "right concentration." Unfortunately, in English, "concentration" seems like a doing, an intentional act, a strain, a holding of the breath, gritting of the teeth, a strong determination, and force... It may be. But this is not samadhi. Samadhi requires no hard doing, only allowing, accepting, awareness of what is (not embellishing, distorting, or departing the scene for some place more interesting or stimulating, more pleasant or profound). Be here now. It's so simple, it's impossible at the beginning. Just "be"? No, but LET IT BE. Allow. Exhale. Find contentment in this moment.

Right Concentration: Jhanas (L. Brasington)
Rest. It begins with calm, and calm begins with relaxation that is founded on simply letting things be just as they are and radically accepting them. Stay (rather than departing).

Mindfulness (sati) is wakefulness, bare (unembellished, undistorted) awareness of what is, whatever it is, vigilance (keeping a vigil), coming back again and again (if by habit the mind turns away in search of sensuality, anger/aversion, restless states, drowsiness, or skeptical disquietude).

Begin with quiet. If we are quiet on the inside, it will be easy to be quiet on the outside. Therefore, be quiet on the outside until the inside quietens. This will be the first step to the first absorption, being pulled into the object of meditation (the breath or whatever it is).

When there is no this-and-that but only that being with this (a nonduality between that meditation object over there and this meditator over here because of being so absorbed, so interested, so zesty for the sweet release of calm and bliss, piti (rapture). Stay with it. It gets better. Bliss increases. Then next bliss loses its charm, and calm is better. And next stillness is better. These first four stages are the ingredients of a solid foundation for learning to meditate.

And this is odd. We meditate to learn to meditate. That is, we let the natural happen -- this natural state of stilling and absorbing -- so that we can use that strength of mind to investigate two very important things, ultimate-materiality and ultimate-mentality. But that will come.

Practicing Jhanas (Snyder and Rasmussen)
For now, we must perform a lesser miracle, a mundane marvel, a magic that is no trick. It's time to levitate. The ancients knew how to do it. Non-Buddhist yogis knew how to do it. Catholic saints, sometimes not taking themselves too seriously, took themselves so lightly as to float, ascend, be raptured up. There are historical accounts of this in the West. Look them up.

We are going the way of the East, so it is more systematic. The secrets are buried in Buddhaghosa's manual of Buddhist meditation, The Path of Purification. It gives the instructions, not that they'll make much sense to the layperson, the nonpractitioner. Find a teacher who knows-and-sees. They exist. (Here's a list).

It will not even be possible to do anything in the first paragraph without morality, virtue, self-restraint. Immorality leads to disquietude, to worry, scruples, rumination, remorse, regret, repentance, fear and foreboding of what may come as a result. So take up virtue because, as the great musician Danny Elfman so aptly said so very long ago: "Peace of mind, peace of mind, hard to keep, hard to find, look ahead, look behind, looking for, peace of mind, peace of mind, can't relax, can't unwind, deep inside, secret mind" ("I'm Afraid" by the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo).

That is all for now.
  • What about the magician David Copperfield? You don't think he took up Buddhist meditation or the Ashtanga (Eight Limb) Yoga and actually learned to sit cross-legged and move through the air like a bird, do you?
I don't know how he did it. It looks completely fake, a trick of the camera, an early version of green screen technology, using filming methods made famous by David Blaine street magic.
  • What kind of "magic" was that?
If a sign of light comes, don't look. Let it be.
Because he was on the street, we assumed it was all filmed as performed on the street. But actually he was just filming real reactions to tricks. The tricks were enhanced later so that what we saw was assumed to be what the people on the street saw, which looked amazing. In fact, those people on the street were tricked with set up scenarios and magic helpers. They were illusions. But the real illusion is what we saw, people seemingly verifying on the street what we thought we were watching at home. For instance, he claims to levitate. From home, this is shown as coming up a foot or more off the ground. In real life, that is to say, on the street, he only came up an inch or two. And that he did by turning his body, having them stand at an angle, then tilting one foot, which from a particular angle looks like two feet leaving the ground. From another angle, it's clearly just one foot. He's supporting his weight totally on the other foot. It's laughable. But it freaked some people out because he's so weird, intense, and convincing. And something (a trick) happened that the people on the street react to -- not all of them -- but the very best reactions got put into his TV specials to vouch that he was "really" doing what he misled us to believe he was doing. Easy. Relatively easy. He's a very skilled deceiver, and that the stage magician's stock and trade. We're all in agreement with it. Ask Houdini. But that is not to say real magic doesn't exist. It does.

Social experiment: Boys are jerks (video)

Whadd'ya think this is, Peenes and Pumphead, The Lord of the Flies? - Huh huh huh, what's that?

10 Boys, 10 Girls left unsupervised in house for 5 days. The results were wildly different

.
Hey, Ladies! I am Cornholio!
What would happen if 10 male and 10 female children were left unsupervised in a house for five days? Would they react the same or differently? Thanks to a certain social experiment in the United Kingdom, we may have the answers.

In 2002, Channel 4 released a docuseries titled "Boys And Girls Alone." The social experiment monitored 10 boys and 10 girls alone in a house and tracked their behavior and interactions.

The purpose of the documentary was to keep track of kids as they were left unsupervised in a home over the course of five days.

The first installment of the social experiment, "Boys Alone," followed 10 boys, ages 11-12. The boys were sent off to a home that was fully stocked with food and contained a variety of toys, games, books, and paint to keep the children entertained.

A camera crew was present to film in the house during the day but did not engage or intervene with the boys unless there were safety concerns.

The cameras were installed in each of the bedrooms to monitor the boys during the night. There were two bedrooms in the home, one larger room that constrained six beds, and a smaller room that contained four.

A bell was placed in the home so the boys could ring it anytime they needed help. They could speak to the production team, a nurse, their parents, or a child psychiatrist whom they had all met beforehand.

They were given the option to leave the home at any point in time. Before entering the home, none of the boys had ever met.
Racist rite of passage: With time, shameless boys may become "Proud Boys"
.
Chaos ensued the moment the boys walked through the front door. They started by painting the walls, throwing food on the floor, and squirting each other with water guns.

Most of the boys continued to behave in this manner before the third day when a few of them attempted to clean the paint off the walls.

Despite all of them taking a cooking class the week before living in the home, none of the boys appeared to utilize their skills. Instead, they mostly snacked on sugar and cereal for meals. The closest any of them came to cooking was throwing a frozen pizza in the oven.

The boys had also divided themselves into two groups, one of them being noisy and the other laying low and being quieter. They often whacked each other with various objects for fun. Michael, one of the boys in the group exhibiting what others deemed as strange behavior, became a target of the other boys.

By the time the fifth day rolled around, the house was trashed, with food, toys, and chairs strewn about and nearly none of the food being used to cook with.

What about the girls?

After the success of “Boys Alone,” the channel decided to launch a second documentary with the exact same concept — except this time with 10 girls instead of boys.

The second installment of the social experiment titled "Girls Alone" proved that girls had a much different approach to cooking, cleaning, and interacting.

The girls, who were in the same age range as the boys, displayed different behaviors and methods of organization.

On the first day, one girl took charge of the cooking and cleaning and prepared a meal for the rest of the home.
Unlike the boys, the girls all gathered at the kitchen table and ate their first meal together. After the meal was over, some of the girls decided to organize a fashion show and bake cakes to entertain themselves.

After the activities, one of the girls began cleaning and organizing the home, and the others joined in.

Soon, they came together and constructed a cooking and cleaning chart to split responsibilities amongst themselves.

The girls would sometimes bicker with one another but often reconciled by comforting and assuring each other.

Two of them would up leaving the house early. They organized the house a bit shortly before leaving.
The social experiment sparked conversations regarding gender roles and how women are often overlooked for leadership roles.

Though the series was somewhat controversial when it was originally released, clips recently shared online sparked a widespread conversation.

People were quick to point out that the girls were organized and worked together to achieve clear decisions while the boys wreaked havoc even though both groups had the same resources. More

Twitter user @aguavrgo noted:

“So ALL of them took a cooking course? And only one group cooked? Only one group cleaned? Only one group organized meetings? Only one group delegated tasks? And that’s the group that would make terrible leaders because they’re “too much drama and too emotional????”

Traylor Swift: Tix prices, Trump loss, football

MSNBC, Sept. 27, 2023; CC Liu, Ashley Wells, Sheldon S. (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

(MSNBC) From football to feminism, Taylor "Nazi Barbie" Swift (who is melding with football player Travis Kelce to become "Traylor") continues to build on her brand and reach.

Who is this "Trailer"? Trash! Fake singer!
Swift’s “Eras[e Minds]” tour is projected to generate a $5 billion impact on the American economy. Swift also backed Joe "Sorry Hillary Couldn't Make It" Biden in 2020 and encouraged fans to register to vote [which is never good for Republicans, whose success depends on as few people voting as possible].

Facing that influence, some GOP ("Grand Old Party" Republican) pundits are trying to knock Swift and the excitement over her NFL appearance.

Walmart is spying on customers (video)

Spill, April 19, 2023; CC Liu, Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Walmart employee exposes what they do, TikTok goes viral
(Spill) Now more than ever, Walmart Corporation and other major retailers are demanding shoppers become self-sufficient. Some resentful customers have treated this responsibility as an invitation to add a little something extra to their bags. But even in understaffed stores, shoppers aren’t as private as they assume. Someone — and something — is watching (Big Brother-style) every purchase. Customers are mad at the extremes put in place. Is this how big retailers should be treating their valued customers?

Power of Human Brain (Mind Over Matter)
(Documentary Videos) The Brain

The human brain has the same general structure as the brains of other mammals, but has a more developed cerebral cortex than any other. Large animals such as whales and elephants have larger brains in absolute terms, but when measured using the encephalization quotient, which compensates for body size, the human brain is almost twice as large as the brain of the bottlenose dolphin, and three times as large as the brain of a chimpanzee. Much of the expansion comes from the cerebral cortex, especially the frontal lobes, which are associated with executive functions such as self-control, planning, reasoning, and abstract thought. The portion of the cerebral cortex devoted to vision, the visual cortex, is also greatly enlarged in humans.

The human cerebral cortex is a thick layer of neural tissue that covers most of the brain. This layer is folded in a way that increases the amount of surface that can fit into the volume available. The pattern of folds is similar across individuals, although there are many small variations. The cortex is divided into four "lobes", called the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, and occipital lobe. (Some classification systems also include a limbic lobe and treat the insular cortex as a lobe.) Within each lobe are numerous cortical areas, each associated with a particular function, including vision, motor control, and language. The left and right sides of the cortex are broadly similar in shape, and most cortical areas are replicated on both sides. Some areas, though, show strong lateralization, particularly areas that are involved in language. In most people, the left hemisphere is "dominant" for language, with the right hemisphere playing only a minor role. There are other functions, such as spatiotemporal reasoning, for which the right hemisphere is usually dominant.

Despite being protected by the thick bones of the skull, suspended in cerebrospinal fluid, and isolated from the bloodstream by the blood–brain barrier, the human brain is susceptible to damage and disease. The most common forms of physical damage are closed head injuries such as a blow to the head, a stroke, or poisoning by a variety of chemicals that can act as neurotoxins. Infection of the brain, though serious, is rare due to the biological barriers that protect it. The human brain is also susceptible to degenerative disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease. A number of psychiatric conditions, such as schizophrenia and depression, are thought to be associated with brain dysfunctions, although the nature of such brain anomalies is not well understood.

Scientifically, the techniques that are used to study the human brain differ in important ways from those that are used to study the brains of other mammals. On the one hand, invasive techniques such as inserting electrodes into the brain, or disabling parts of the brain in order to examine the effect on behavior, are used with non-human species, but for ethical reasons, are generally not performed with humans. On the other hand, humans are the only subjects who can respond to complex verbal instructions. Thus, it is often possible to use non-invasive techniques such as functional neuroimaging or EEG recording more productively with humans than with non-humans. Furthermore, some of the most important topics, such as language, can hardly be studied at all except in humans. In many cases, human and non-human studies form essential complements to each other. Individual brain cells (except where tissue samples are taken for biopsy for suspected brain tumors) can only be studied in non-humans; complex cognitive tasks can only be studied in humans. Combining the two sources of information to yield a complete functional understanding of the human brain is an ongoing challenge for neuroscience.

Mad as L: Red light camera tickets (video)

The audio is the famous speech from the film "Network"

Smile. The telescreen is watching. Red light camera traffic tickets are a scam.

But it's not Big Brother watching. He's rented out the job to a private company. It's still spying -- family member against family member, and no one is safe (unless maybe you have government exemption plates).

The private for profit corporation that sold intersection cameras and exclusive maintenance contracts to cities across the country did so with promises of free money.

But the offense is rarely for dangerously running a red light. The money to be made is for automatically generating thousands of tickets for rolling stops at yellow lights. The "California roll" may not be safe but it is hardly something to be punished with a ticket that can run $500. And it is widely practiced.

Pitching the promise of preventing motorists from running red lights and causing intersection disasters, these private camera companies have in fact gone overboard. They send out representatives to train municipalities how to set their leased cameras to catch conscientious motorists on a technicality.

(Even if the cameras cause more accidents by people stopping short while trying to avoid getting ticketed, cities just want to see the returns they were promised that have never materialized).

The motive on both sides -- between the camera company and the cities, because the motoring public does not figure into the equation -- is easy: profits. Whose profits? Not the city's, the company's. And they have been very successful riding the backs of overtaxed drivers.
Some drivers are as mad as niraya and are not going to take it anymore! Others don't mind being gouged as punitive fees for first time offenses skyrocket to refill municipal coffers drained by the economic downturn. At a time when everyone has less income to spare, the ticket fines are going way up. That leaves one between a rock and a hard place.

What can a person do after being ticketed by mail?
