Future of Hope: Dr. Jane Goodall (3/30)

Dr. Jane Goodall's address and presentation begins at Minute 34:37 with a highlight at 1:13:31

We say we 'love' animals but pay to kill them?
What happened? More than 1,500 people showed up from in and around Pasadena to welcome the great, albeit softspoken, doctor and environmental icon. She told the story of her life, gave reasons for hope that our planet can be saved, then took questions submitted by students. What can we all do to save animals, save humans, and save the forests? Go vegan, plant-based, vegetarian, or intermittently veggie. Join a local chapter of Jane Goodall's Root & Shoots, and consider that every decision we make individually about a clean environment adds up (forming collective action) until, one day, it's clean and restored.

Wild Food Cooking Class (1/21)

Christopher Nyerges, School of Self-Reliance; Dhr. Seven, Xochitl (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Nyerges authored many books
WILD FOOD COOKING — edible wild plants of Southern California, Jan. 20, 2024 @ 10:00 am-2:00 pm, $45.00 – $65.00. Learn edible wild plants of Southern California, Saturday. We explore the local area and do our best to create a local meal provided by nature.

We create a meal with a salad, soup, vegetable dish, pancakes, and a drink, from plants we collect today and from plants that were previously collected. Walk is brief and leisurely, collecting plants along the way, learning how to identify food as well as other non-food plants we encounter.

Foraging has gotten popular. Learn how to ethically forage and how to properly identify wild plants. It's a great survival skill. We never know exactly what we’ll find, but we are likely to have wild greens for salad and soup, wild buckwheat for pancakes, herbs for tea, cactus, and possibly some wild fruits for a dessert item. We find out along the way on this walkabout.

THIS CLASS COUNTS TOWARDS THE ETHNOBOTANY CERTIFICATE. Location sent out when upon registration. $65 (senior/student $45): SchoolofSelf-Reliance.com (Events)

Being free of clutter (Why Bother?)

Happiness is the way, so be happy right now.
As physical beings we need room to move. Controlled surroundings feel secure. The world is bigger than us. Why have uncongested (uncluttered) space.

Making a home requires the imagination to make use of our existing surroundings.
One great trick for getting our imaginations unstuck is to stop trying to think about the home we have. Instead, think about the life we live and how we’d live in some other house.

Then we can take the creative ideas we’ve come up with and apply them to the home we have. The COLONIAL HOME CHALLENGE is a Getting Unstuck Game for all of us.

Click the link and see a house description. Then see plans that use the very same house reused in numerous ways to meet the needs of different families.

Now it’s your turn. Imagine a family -- possibly your own.... How could YOU use the house? If you can’t find a solution for your needs, send us a description. If it’s really difficult we might try to solve it as a group! Why Bother? (ifnotnow.com)

Afghans, Gazans starve on World Food Day

NationalDayCalendar.com, Oct. 16, 2023; Crystal Q., Seth Auberon (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
If the world went vegetarian, world hunger would be cured overnight and be healthier than ever.
.
Children suffer in US-war torn Afghanistan
World Food Day is held every year on Oct. 16th. On this day, more than 150 countries unite to raise awareness of the issues surrounding poverty and hunger. According to World Hunger Statistics, 785 million people across the planet do not have enough food to sustain a healthy life. The number equals about one in nine people in the world. Surprisingly, the majority of hungry people live in developing countries. Poor nutrition causes 45% of deaths in children under the age of 5. That means just over 3 million children a year die because they don't have access to enough nutritious food.

Apache Stronghold: Protect Oak Flat

Resolution Cop. Controversy; Ashley Wells, Dhr. Seven, Xochitl (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Wendsler NosieApache tribal members testify about Oak Flat, Arizona in 2020
The Oak Flat case is being decided on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, 9:00 am in Pasadena, CA.

What is Oak Flat, Arizona?
Oak Flat is sacred land that features groves of Emory oaks, canyons, and springs protected by the San Carlos Apache tribe. Resolution Copper (a subsidiary of Rio Tinto) lobbied politicians to turn over National Forest land so they could blockade it or mining by earthquake (Elias Butler).
.
Tonto National Forest's sacred land, Arizona
Oak Flat (Western Apache Chíchʼil Bił Dagoteel, Navajo Chéchʼil Bił Dahoteel) is in Pinal County 40 miles (64 kms) east of Phoenix in the Tonto National Forest, a high desert setting at 3,900 feet (1,200 m) elevation.

The land is sacred to Native Americans from the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation and many other Arizona tribes.

.
This federally-protected area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features a National Forest Service public campground.

The landscape includes Apache Leap cliff, the mesa of Oak Flat, and Devil's Canyon (which Apaches refer to as Ga'an or "Angels Canyon"), all of which are popular with hikers, birders, climbers, off-roaders, hunters, and members of the area's indigenous tribes.

Oak Flat has been subject to attempts by the federal government to sell it to corporate mining interests since 2002, against the will of the San Carlos Apache tribe. More
Selling National Forest land to corporation
Look, I'm too busy in D.C. to help Indians. I'm up in the East Coast, not the Southwest!

The "Green New Deal"? Oh, that thing. No, me and The Squad just want to get re-elected.
.
AOC, can you help? - Uh, I'm busy.
In Dec. 2014, Pres. Obama signed the 2015 National Defense Authorization Act. It would give land sacred to the Apache in Arizona to a corporation called Resolution Copper Mine (RCM), a joint venture owned by Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton.

The Act cleared the way for the land swap in which Resolution Copper would receive 2,422 acres of National Forest land in exchange for deeding to the federal government 5,344 acres of private land [13].

Apache's Leap near Oak Flat, Tonto National Forest, Arizona (wiki)
.
I have no idea why people keep asking me!!!
A proposal or rider in Section 3003 of the Act, titled "Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act," makes it possible for RCM to develop and operate an underground copper mine 7,000-feet deep (approximately five Empire State buildings) in the publicly owned Tonto National Forest near Superior, Arizona.

The land contains more than 2,400 acres of the Oak Flat Campground, an area dotted with petroglyphs and historic and prehistoric sites [14].

Former San Carlos Apache Tribal Chairman Wendsler Nosie Sr. said of the Act's attached rider: "This is Congressional politics at its [worst], a hidden agenda that destroys human rights and religious rights." More
