(Historidame) Creepy clowns, weird Sideshow attractions, a midway, and rides that were actively dangerous -- early amusement parks were terrifying, and I want to visit them so badly. So join me today, dear viewers, as we take a trip into the past and explore the golden age of amusement parks.

Trump's night at the Garden: Racist campaign rally adopts language of fascism and violence
(DemocracyNow!) Oct. 29, 2024: DN! takes a close look at The Donald's campaign and racist rally at Madison Square Garden with Prof. of History and Italian Studies at NYU Ruth Ben-Ghiat (author of Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present [Guy]), an expert on fascism and authoritarianism, and filmmaker Marshall Curry.
Prof. Ben-Ghiat argues that Trump's use of the hallmarks of "fascism and violence" -- including dehumanizing rhetoric, profane and crude discriminatory language, and threats to the "enemy within" -- echoes the rise of midcentury fascist rulers like and Adolf Hitler and Fran Franco.
Curry attended the rally and also directed the short film A Night at the Garden, about the 1939 Nazi rally at Madison Square Garden. He notes, "The demagogues in 1939 used the same tactics that we see today."
The 1939 Nazi rally at Madison Square Garden
(TheUntoldPast) One of the strangest events to take place around the time of WW II has to be the Nazi rally that took place in one of the world's most famous entertainment venues, New York's Madison Square Garden.
Was Hitler-supporting Prescott S. Bush, the forebear of CIA Chief George H. Bush and US Pres. George W. Bush (puppet of fellow war criminal VP Dick Cheney) holding a swastika, a portrait of the Fuhrer, or a white supremacy banner?
Prior to the American involvement in Hitler's war, there was an American group that supported Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party.
Known as the German American Bund, they had thousands of racist members in the USA. There were numerous white supremacist groups like this around the world outside of Germany.
However, what is the story of their 1939 rally in the most famous entertainment venue in the world (site of Led Zeppelin's greatest concert when the British invaded the US)?

Pres. Don John Trump's German dad, Fred Trunf, participated in a Nazi rally and white supremacist racist parade on the streets of New York, possibly ending up at Madison Square Garden. In any case, we know this because Father Trump was arrested for his racist outpouring of hate, which he taught his son, almost as if Hitler had had a father.
A Night at the Garden | An American Nazi Rally in 1939 | POV
(PBS) In 1939, 20,000 Neo-Nazi Americans rallied in New York’s Madison Square Garden to celebrate the rise of Nazism – an event largely forgotten from American history.
A Night at the Garden uses striking archival fragments recorded that night to transport modern audiences into this gathering and shine a light on the disturbing fallibility of seemingly decent [white] people.

In 1927, Don Trump's father Fred Trump was arrested at a Ku Klux Klan meeting and demonstration. There is no conclusive proof, other than he presence there and arrest, that he supported all of the organization's goals [b, c].
From WW II onwards, to avoid further associations with Nazism, Fred Trump denied his German ancestry (and Nazi sympathies), even supporting Jewish causes [d, e, f], at least the white Ashkenazi/European Jewish kind since many of those kinds of Jews were German.

Early life and career
Fred Trump (far left) with his German Trunf family, circa 1915
The Germanic American Friedrich Trunf Trump, amassed considerable wealth during the Klondike Gold Rush by running a brothel (house of prostitution) and eatery for miners trying to get rich quick.
Friedrich returned to Kallstadtin 1901 and, by the next year, met and married Lizzy Christ [17]. They moved to NYC, where their first child, Elizabeth, was born in 1904 [18]. Later that year, the family returned to Kallstadt [19]. Fred was conceived in Bavaria, where his parents wished to re-establish residency, but Friedrich was banished for dodging the draft [20, 19].
The family returned to New York on July 1, 1905, and moved to the Bronx, where [Donald Trump's father] Frederick Christ Trump was born on October 11 [21]. Fred's younger brother, John G. Trump, was born in 1907.
All three children were raised speaking German [22] with severe German discipline. In September 1908, the family moved to Woodhaven, Queens [23].
Many details of Trump's childhood come from autobiographical accounts and emphasize independence, learning, and especially hard work – to the point of being fictional [24][g].
At the age of 10, Trump worked as a delivery boy for a butcher [27]. About two years later, on Memorial Day, his German father died in the 1918 flu pandemic [28]. More

Let's go to Jen Affleck's house to help her.
(Homes & Garden) Thoughts of a Los Angeles "farmhouse" may not immediately lead to a Zen Garden (or, more specifically, a pool area), but Hollywood actor Jennifer Garner has just challenged our conventions.
The actress's pared-back exterior space (architecturally designed by Steve Giannetti) makes a case for minimalist garden design – most notably thanks to its lack of planting, poolside furniture, and accessories.
The Zen of Jen (and Ben) | Marie Claire She's the nicest girl in town, but as a newish mom in 2007 and as Ben Affleck's wife, Jennifer Garner is finally learning to show some steel. Now in 2024 he's miserable because Latin dreamboat Jennifer Lopez has dumped him again, so Jen and Matt Damon have to keep him off the ledge.
However, despite the absence of decoration, Garner's pool area is anything but boring. Instead, it's soothing, grounding, and designed so that the wood (from both the house and the decking) can take center stage.
Zen is a Japanese word from Chinese (Chán). The Korean (Sŏn), Vietnamese (Thiền), Pali (Jhana), and Sanskrit (Dhyana) are all words for "meditation," more specifically a kind of serene state of absorption. "Zen" in everyday use refers to the practices in the popular imagination rather than a Mahayana Buddhist school that originated in China (禪宗, chánzōng, the Chan School, "meditation school") or the Buddha-mind school (佛心宗, fóxīnzōng) [1] that later developed into various sub-schools and branches. Zen was strongly influenced by Taoism ☯️, especially Neo-Daoist thought, and developed into a distinct school of Chinese Buddhism [2]. China got Zen from India, Chán deriving from Buddhist dhyana. It then spread south to Vietnam and became Vietnamese Thiền, northeast to Korea to become Seon Buddhism, and east to Japan, becoming Japanese Zen Buddhism [3]. Zen emphasizes serenity meditation practice and direct insight into one's own innate "Buddha nature" (見性, Chinese jiànxìng, Japanese kenshō), and the personal expression of this insight in daily life for the benefit of others [4, 5]. Native American practice? Jen's rain dance for LA
This natural material works in harmony with the surrounding greenery and pool water to bring a sense of calmness to the area, and it's one of the finest (and one of the most beautifully simple) examples of a Zen Garden we've observed over the reign of this ever-growing outdoor trend.
A pool makes me feel cool in the garden
(Marie Claire) A rolled-up yoga mat and a baby stroller is pretty much all you need to blend in at the farmhouse-red Brentwood Country Mart in West Los Angeles [outside of Tinsel Town, closer to UCLA], where Jennifer Garner has asked me to meet her. The cozy-looking place is an apt choice for Hollywood's most down-to-earth star, except for the novelty item being sold at the bakery today: $5 cupcakes commemorating Paris Hilton's imminent trip to jail. There's a camera crew set up by the cash register. In a pair of blue jeans, a short-sleeve polka-dot blouse, and sneakers, Garner is walking along...when I stroll over to say hi. At which point she shoots me a curt "hello" and turns her back. Cuts me dead, [b*tch]. But it's half of the Bennifer! More
Alongside Garner's (unintentional) approval, experts say we owe the rise of Zen-style gardens to their therapeutic qualities – many of which translate to spaces of all sizes (whether we have a pool or not). The key is in the simplicity, they explain.
"Compared to cottage and country garden-style gardens, this style of outdoor space is uncomplicated and paired back. It doesn’t feature a lot of different flowers, creating a sense of peace and tranquility," comments Marcus Eyles, the horticultural director at Dobbies.
"The aim is to create a space with a modern feel – light and clean lines are important when it comes to establishing a sense of Zen." More
VIDEO: Inside Jennifer Garner’s Farm-Style L.A. Home | Open Door | Architectural Digest
(Architectural Digest) Sept. 3, 2024: Today, AD is welcomed by Jennifer Garner to tour her farm-style home in Los Angeles. When designing Garner’s home, there was no Pinterest board or pictures from a magazine; it was simply an in-depth discussion with designers Steve and Brooke Giannetti and a watercolor painting of their vision. Together, they designed a farmhouse-style oasis full of warmth and character. From her wooden kitchen with a dedicated baking station to an orchard in the backyard, it’s easy to forget Garner lives among the hustle and bustle of LA. “I wanted it to feel old and cool and historic, but I also wanted to make it work for a big family with a lot of things going on.”

Huntington Botanical Gardens in a new light
The Tao or "way" of Zen is [easy].
The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens is opening evening access to its Twilight Garden Strolls hours during the summer months so more people can enjoy the gardens in cooler temperatures. Previously, only members could get tickets to the special program.
Why the Huntington is extending hours: “Opening in the evening allows us to welcome more visitors who can enjoy green spaces and see our gardens in quite literally a different light,” said Director of Membership and Visitor Services at the Huntington Kristin Voss.
The program has been such a success for members that the Huntington is now expanding ticket access to the general public.
The cultivation of stillness, silence, absorption
[EDITOR SEVEN: What is "Zen"? In English it means "flow state," "effortless creativity," "artless artfulness," "unpremeditated spontaneity," "calm," "ease," but in Japanese it comes from the Chinese Chan (channa), which is an attempt to pronounce the Pali jhana (from the Sanskrit dhyana), all of which mean "meditative absorption." If meditation in English means flapping our wings to get in the air, efforting to alight off a branch in a tree on a cliff, in Buddhist terms it is the bhavana or "cultivation" of the subsequent effortless soaring. Just let go of the branch.
What if? - Don't do that to yourself. Be here now
We make an effort (dharana) to let go, allow, let it be, accept what is, breathe being aware only of that breathing, which keeps us in the present moment, not reacting to whatever arises but merely observing, not falling into the habit of escaping to the past and dragging it into the present, not leaping into the habit of escaping into the future and dragging it into the present, staying only here and now mindful (present with) of the present, watching, and remaining watchful.
Thinking is not the way. Let go. See. Allow.
It is the nonabandoning of the moment, the nondistraction from the object, the following this very moment into calm presence, unification of mind, stillness, coherence, which are ways of saying samadhi. First there was the subject (me) and the object (what was observed). Then, for a moment, they were one; that is, there was no distinction. They merged, one absorbing into the other. It was so Zen.]
.
What’s different about the gardens in the evening hours: With the shift in temperatures and lighting, the gardens take on different sights, smells, and sounds.
One can see the campus during the “golden” or “magic” hour -- a favorite time for photographers when the sun is just about to set and casts an ethereal quality on plants and flowers.

“The Desert Garden is one of my favorites,” said Voss. “There's something really lovely about the unusual shapes and colors matched with the warm tones of sunset during summer.”
How to take a tour after hours: This year, the Huntington has added Twilight Garden Estate Tours, a docent-led walk through many of the gardens and looks at some of the historic architectural features, on campus.

As the ecosystems around us grow increasingly fragmented, islands of intact habitat persist amid a sea of development and human infrastructure.
These reservoirs of biodiversity are sustained by the complexity of species relationships they harbor – relationships that are strengthened by connectivity and strained by isolation.
The 2024 Native Plant Garden Tour seeks to shine a light on the native plant gardens that reinvigorate urban habitats – a system of roots that stretches through the developed landscape and brings wild spaces closer to home.
Join the tour to find out how to create an island of biodiversity, strengthening the ecological roots of Los Angeles with native plants.
Spotlighting 40+ gardens across the city, this two-day journey will bring together the plants and people that make Southern California one of the most biodiverse places on the planet.
The gardens are divided into two groups, Westside Gardens which are open Saturday, April 13th, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Eastside Gardens, which are open Sunday, April 14th, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. A ticket allows holder into gardens on both days.

WILD FOOD COOKING — edible wild plants of Southern California, Jan. 20, 2024 @ 10:00 am-2:00 pm, $45.00 – $65.00.
Learn edible wild plants of Southern California, Saturday.
We explore the local area and do our best to create a local meal provided by nature.
We create a meal with a salad, soup, vegetable dish, pancakes, and a drink, from plants we collect today and from plants that were previously collected. Walk is brief and leisurely, collecting plants along the way, learning how to identify food as well as other non-food plants we encounter.
Foraging has gotten popular. Learn how to ethically forage and how to properly identify wild plants. It's a great survival skill. We never know exactly what we’ll find, but we are likely to have wild greens for salad and soup, wild buckwheat for pancakes, herbs for tea, cactus, and possibly some wild fruits for a dessert item. We find out along the way on this walkabout.
