News of the Day: Gaga, Moon, Hitler, Tiger...

Thailand's new PM, Yingluck Shinawatra, the sister of ousted Premier Thaksin Shinawatra, waves to the crowd outside her party's headquarters in Bangkok on July 3, 2011 (Damir Sagolj/Reuters-Landov).

Yingluck Shinawatra, who has been elected the first woman prime minister of Thailand, has been a shadowy figure on the Thai scene up to now. In her TV interviews she comes across as a typical Thai female presence: deft, slightly steely, understated, her gestures measured and imperturbable, the charm calculatingly uncalculating. She will cut an interesting figure on the world stage. At once corporate and feminine, dynastic and individual, she has joined the ranks of Golda Meir, Margaret Thatcher, and Indira Gandhi without the gender-war boilerplate of her American counterparts or the stern asexuality of an [Angela] Merkel. Buddhist golfer Tiger Woods' big announcement
Jay Busbee
So it turns out the "big Tiger Woods announcement" scheduled for Monday morning was missing an apostrophe-s and the word "agent." Tiger's agent, Mark Steinberg, announced that he'll be joining Excel Sports Management...

Looking at the Dark Side of the Moon
NASA is working on a topographic map of the Moon showing its mysterious dark side in greater detail than ever before. The data's been collected by the Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA), whose five beams create a two-dimensional map that unambiguously reveals slopes. LOLA will also measure the spreading of the return pulse and the change in its energy to establish the surface roughness and reflectance.

Did Apollo 11 Encounter UFOs on the Moon?

Timothy Good (Above Top Secret)
According to hitherto unconfirmed reports, both Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin saw UFOs shortly after that historic landing on the Moon in Apollo 11 on 21 July 1969. I remember hearing one of the astronauts refer to a "light" in or on a crater during the television transmission, followed by a request from mission control for further information. Nothing more was heard. According to a former NASA employee Otto Binder, unnamed radio hams with their own VHF receiving facilities that bypassed NASA's broadcasting outlets picked up the following exchange:

Want more kids, masturbate more
Since Christine “I’m Not a Witch” O’Donnell [was] campaigning for the U.S. Senate and not the directorship of the Kinsey Institute, maybe we should give her a pass when it comes to her views on sex and, specifically, masturbation.

In Israel, diggers unearth the Bible's bad guys
TEL EL-SAFI, Israel (AP) - At the remains of an ancient metropolis in southern Israel, archaeologists are piecing together the history of a people remembered chiefly as the bad guys of the Hebrew Bible -- the Philistines.... Close to three millennia ago, Gath was on the frontier between the Philistines, who occupied the Mediterranean coastal plain, and the Israelites, who controlled the inland hills. The city's most famous resident, according to the Book of Samuel, was Goliath -- the giant warrior improbably felled by the young shepherd David and his sling.

New "South California," the 51st state?
(LA Times) Accusing [state capital] Sacramento of pillaging local governments to feed its runaway spending and left-wing policies, a Riverside County politician is proposing a solution: He wants 13 mostly inland, conservative counties to break away to form a separate state of "South California.'' Supervisor Jeff Stone, a Republican pharmacist from Temecula, called California an "ungovernable'' financial catastrophe from which businesses are fleeing and where taxpayers are being crushed [supposedly] by the burden of caring for welfare recipients and illegal immigrants.
