Jendhamuni Sos interviews a newly ordained Bud-dhist novice at the Cambodian Triratanaram Temple in North Chelmsford, Massachusetts, U.S.A. about why he took on Buddhist robes. A novice, or samanera, is not a fully-ordained monk or nun (bhikkhu/bhikkhuni) but rather one in training, who renounces temporarily to either prepare for higher ordination and become a monastic or to accrue a great deal of merit.
