For the first time, scientists have identified genetic variations associated with human bisexual behavior and found these markers are linked to risk-taking and having more offspring when they are carried by heterosexual men.

The study, published Wednesday in Science Advances, was based on data from more than 450,000 people of European descent who signed up for the UK Biobank, a long-term genomics project that has proven a major boon for health research.

It builds on growing research including a seminal 2019 paper in Science that found genetic variants influenced to some extent whether a person engaged in same-sex behavior, though environmental factors [like being molested or traumatized in childhood] were more important.

Since the beginning of time, elves have been the stuff of legend in Iceland, but locals here will earnestly tell you that elves appear regularly to those who know how to see them.

 

Construction sites have been moved so as not to disturb the elves, and fishermen have refused to put out to sea because of their warnings: here in Iceland, these creatures are a part of everyday life. But, honestly, do they really exist?

Anthropologist Magnus Skarphedinsson has spent decades collecting witness accounts, and he’s convinced the answer is yes.
 

He now passes on his knowledge to curious crowds as the headmaster of Reykjavik’s Elf School.

 

“There is no doubt that they exist!” exclaims the stout 60-year-old as he addresses his “students,” for the most part tourists fascinated by Icelanders’ belief in elves.

  

What is an elf?

Time is not the same in parallel worlds. Man dances with fairies for an hour, but in human time he was in the fairy ring for two weeks, in a strange case reported in Welsh folklore (T. H. Thomas, Plucked from the Fairy Circle).

Our language comes from hidden people.

What exactly is an elf? A well-intentioned being, smaller than a person, who lives outdoors and normally does not talk. They are not to be confused with Iceland’s “hidden people,” who resemble humans and almost all of whom speak Icelandic.

 

To convince skeptics that this is not just a myth, Skarphedinsson relays two “witness accounts,” spinning the tales as an accomplished storyteller.

The first tells of a woman who knew a fisherman who was able to see elves who would also go out to sea to fish.

 

"Hidden People" speaking Icelandic: devas?

One morning in February 1921, he noticed they were not heading out to sea, and he tried to convince the other fishermen not to go out either. But the boss would not let them stay on shore.

 

That day, there was an unusually violent storm in the North Atlantic. But the fishermen, who had heeded his warning and stayed closed to shore, all returned home safe and sound.

 

Seven years later, in June 1928, the elves again did not put out to sea which was confusing because there had never been a fierce storm at sea at that time of year. Forced to head out, they sailed waters that were calm but caught very few fish.

“The elves knew it,” the anthropologist claims.

 

The other “witness” is a woman in her eighties, who in 2002 ran into a young teen who claimed to know her. Asking him where they had met, he gave her an address where she had lived 53 years ago where her daughter claimed she had played with an invisible boy.

 

“But, Mum, it’s Maggi!” exclaimed the daughter when her mother described the teen.

 

“He had aged fives times slower than a human being,” said Skarphedinsson.

 

Surveys suggest about half of Icelanders believe in elves.

“Most people say they heard [about them] from their grandparents when they were children,” said Michael Herdon, a 29-year-old American tourist attending Elf School.

BAMIYAN, Afghanistan - "We got him!" screamed Afghan archaeologist Anwar Khan Fayez as he leapt from the pit beneath the towering sandstone cliffs, where the Bamiyan Buddhas once stood.

Seven years after Taliban militants blew up the two 1,500-year-old statues in a fit of Islamist zealotry, a French-Afghan team in September uncovered a new, 19-metre (62-foot) "Sleeping Buddha" buried in the earth.

The largest is known but still in the ground. Will the CIA's "Taliban" blow it up, too?

The news that a third Buddha escaped the Taliban's wrath has caused excitement in this scenic valley, where the caverns that housed the ruined statues are an eerie reminder of Afghanistan's past and present woes.

"It was a happy moment for all of us when the first signs appeared. Our years-long efforts had somehow paid off," Fayez told AFP.

The team, led by France-based archaeologist Zemaryalai Tarzi, made the find while hunting for a lost 300-metre reclining Buddha mentioned in an account by seventh-century Chinese monk Xuan Zang.

Scratching out an existence on sacred ground

The Afghan-born Tarzi began mapping the site nearly 30 years ago, but decades of conflict and the rise of the [CIA-sponsored, Pakistan-collaborated] 1996-2001 Taliban regime put the search on hold.

Then in March 2001 came the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas, until then the world's largest standing Buddha statues.

The 300 meter (1,000 ft) reclining Buddha was buried, covered in earth by age or invaders.

 

World suddenly outraged: send in the troops!

Hewn into the cliffs in the sixth century by Buddhist pilgrims [or more likely the Shakyan-Scythians proud of their heroic son, Prince Siddhartha, who became the Buddha] on the famed Silk Route, the statues had survived attacks by several Muslim emperors down the ages, while even Mongol conqueror Genghis Khan had spared them.

But with the backing of Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda movement, [someone with the CIA convinced] Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar [who] declared that they were idols that were against Islamic law.

Defying international appeals, the Taliban spent a month using first anti-aircraft guns and then dynamite to obliterate them.

Saddened but with renewed determination, Tarzi and his team returned soon after US-led forces and the Northern Alliance ousted the Taliban in late 2001 to renew their search for the giant missing Buddha.

What they found instead, in September this year, were parts of a previously unknown, smaller Buddha figure, including a thumb, forefinger, palm, parts of its arm, body and the bed on which it lay.

"This is the most significant find since we started here," Abdul Hameed Jalia, the director of monuments and historical sites for Bamiyan province, told AFP at the excavation site of the new 19-metre Buddha.

"At first they found part of the leg but they weren't sure what it was," said Jalia. "But when they found more, Mr Fayez screamed out of happiness and ran to our office to find Mr Tarzi."

Fayez said the head and other parts were largely destroyed, possibly by Arab invaders in the ninth century.

"We have not found the whole statue. But we can tell from other parts that it appears to be 19-metres long," Fayez said.

The site has now been covered with earth to protect the Buddha from both the ravages of the harsh Afghan winter and from the attention of antiquities thieves.

Tarzi told AFP in an e-mail that he and a number of French colleagues aimed to return next summer to dig out the rest of the statue.

Meanwhile, there are fresh clues about the 300-metre Buddha, officials say.

What appear to be the remnants of a gate complex that may have led to the statue have been discovered under an apparently collapsed section of cliff between the two holes left by the Taliban.

"Mr Tarzi's team has found signs that indicate that the big lying Buddha is there and has 70 percent hopes that they will find it," said Najibullah Harar, head of Bamiyan's information and culture department.

Amid hopes that they could one day be rebuilt, Afghan, Japanese and German teams are also stabilising the sites of the destroyed statues -- the bigger 55-metre figure known as Salsal and the 38-metre statue known as Shahmama.

Boulder-sized chunks of the Buddhas still lie where they fell, each individually labelled. Ghostly outlines of the two figures are still etched in the rockface and twisted metal shell casings litter the ground.

Archaeologists' efforts have been helped by the fact that Bamiyan -- inhabited by Shia Muslims from the Hazara ethnic minority that was once persecuted by the Taliban -- has been a relative oasis of calm.

But ongoing debate over whether to reconstruct the Buddhas reflects the uncertainties that haunt post-Taliban Afghanistan.

"It is the desire and the wish of the Bamiyan people to see, if not both, then at least one rebuilt," Habiba Sorabi, the governor of Bamiyan province, told AFP in an interview at her office overlooking the statues.

Rebuilding the Buddhas could help foster a tourist industry in the desperately poor region, which lies 200 kilometres (124 miles) northwest of the relatively prosperous capital Kabul, she said.

UNESCO declared Bamiyan a World Heritage Site in 2003 and there have been discussions with international partners about using the process of anastylosis, by which ruined monuments are reassembled from old fragments and new materials.

"But unfortunately the central government does not want to work on it," added Sorabi, who is the only female provincial governor in Afghanistan. "It is a shame."

Reports from Burma say deadly rioting has taken place between Muslims and Buddhists in a central town.

 

At least 10 people were reported killed and mosques burned in Meiktila town, south of Mandalay, which has a large Muslim population. Officials declared a curfew overnight in the wake of the violence.

 

This appears to be the most serious sectarian clash since almost 200 people were killed last year in unrest in the western state of Rakhine [and further violence in Bangladesh].

What began as an argument in a gold shop escalated quickly, with mobs setting mainly Muslim buildings alight, including some mosques, and fighting in the streets between men from the rival communities, says the BBC's South East Asia correspondent Jonathan Head. 

 

While the fighting was said to have stopped, several areas of the town were still on fire, according to reports. Win Htein, a member of the opposition National League of Democracy [Aung San Suu Kyi's NLD] party, told AFP (Agence-France Presse) that "more than 10 people were killed."

 

"The situation is getting worse. The police cannot control the people. There are groups of people on the streets with knives and sticks," a local resident also told AFP.

 

One of those who died was a Buddhist monk who suffered severe burns on Wednesday, police say.

Sexual encounters with archaic humans like the Neanderthals produced children who inherited key genes that have helped modern humans fight illness and disease, said a US study published Thursday.

"The cross-breeding wasn't just a random event that happened, it gave something useful to the gene pool of the modern human," said Stanford University's Peter Parham, senior author of the study in the journal Science.

Equipped with knowledge of the genome of the Neanderthals and the Denisovans, of whom a tooth and a finger bone were discovered in a Russian cave last year, researchers scoured the data for hints of what genes crossed over.

Scientists already knew that about four percent of Neanderthal DNA and up to six percent of Denisovan DNA are present in some modern humans. This study took a close look at a group called HLA class I genes which help the immune system adapt to fight off new pathogens that could cause various infections, viruses and diseases.

There are 31 Planes of Existence. That means living beings can take rebirth in various forms on various planes, even formlessly. Most realms, however, are "fine material" planes. But sadly most beings fall into unfortunate worlds. This world, this Earth, is not the full extent of the "human realm," according to Wisdom Quarterly: American Buddhist Journal experts.

There are three spheres (sensual, fine material, and immaterial) in this world system. But there are countless world systems in all directions. Humans within this world system are not limited to Earth. We have been to the stars, and many reside there. Everywhere things evolve, devolve, and repeat. The history of life on this Earth is only known to a few.

Most of us are fed anthropological nonsense, sincere nonsense, from good professors. But entire fields of knowledge ignore the inconvenient truths their science stumbles on. Forbidden Archeology: The Hidden History of the Human Race by Michael A. Cremo is one brave effort to reveal the facts that do not fit the story. Cremo reveals a history so vast and incomprehensible that most shrink back to the safety of a story of human history that does not even make sense.

But Cremo's findings do accord with the wisdom of the East. Indian mythology (indeed mythologies from around the world), cosmology, and spiritual history (Vedas) tell an altogether different story covering billions of years, cosmic cycles, past empires, space flight, extraterrestrial visitations, other worlds, life on other planets in this very solar system, and much more. The Buddha adopted much of this cosmology. And apparently the Egyptians and Sumerians were aware of it.

Wisdom Quarterly has gone so far as to postulate that Buddhist cosmography and cosmology, which is centered around the mythical Mt. Sumeru, may be what Sumerian civilization was all about. There have been many visitations, many iterations of the "human" species, punctuated equilibrium (biological evolution in bursts), and a great deal of genetic manipulations by nagas (reptilians), devas (beautiful light being ETs), asuras (titans), kumbandhas (trolls), and even yakkhas (possibly neanderthals and other bipedal hominids, who still roam the world's forests in secret).

That Homo sapiens (modern humans) mated -- or were combined with since different species cannot produce viable offspring by simple mating -- should surprise no one. Homo floresiensis were "hobbits." And yet they were human. "Human" is a very labile term.

We agree with Cornel West and Tavis Smiley, who say we have to keep your feet to the fire to make sure you achieve the greatness you're capable of. The world does not need another Justice Clarence Thomas or Herman Cain. War is PROFITABLE, we know, but there are other ways for our corporations to make money instead of siphoning American citizens via foreign wars. At least stop the propaganda about all the good we are doing for the world by polluting and bombing it. Thank you. By the way, you're a great public speaker. Keep it up.
