U Dhammaloka (Burmese ဦးဓမ္မလောက) lived from 1856–1914. He was an Irish-born migrant worker [1] who became a Theravada Buddhist monk.
He was a strong critic of Christian missionaries and a temperance campaigner who took an active role in the Asian Buddhist revival around the turn of the 20th century.
Venerable Dhammaloka (because "U," pronounced ooh, is not a name or initial but a Burmese honorific) was ordained in Burma prior to 1900, making him the earliest attested Western Buddhist monk in modern times.
He was a celebrity preacher, vigorous polemicist, and prolific editor in Burma and Singapore between 1900 and his conviction for sedition and appeal in 1910–1911.

(BBC News) Oct. 30, 2024: [Though the rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain,] at least 72 158 people are known to be dead in the south-east, where flash flooding has caused “enormous destruction.”
Spanish rescue teams are working to find those feared missing, but damage to infrastructure (permanent structure used in day-to-day living) has made some communities hard to access.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez promised residents in affected areas that they would not be abandoned and announced a three-day mourning period.
UPDATE: At least 158 people are now known to have died after flash floods hit parts of Spain, particularly devastating communities in Valencia. Almost all the deaths, 155, have been recorded in the region, with two more in Castilla-La Mancha and another, a British man, in Andalusia. Emergency teams are continuing to search for those missing and hundreds of soldiers have been deployed to Valencia to assist with the operation. More
There has also been criticism of the civil protection agency -- which is deployed during natural disasters -- as it did not issue an alert until 20:15 local time on Tuesday, when the flooding had already caused a great deal of damage.

The people of Spain are white?
That explains the Casta system.
I remember being shocked. It seems silly now, but then it made sense. When I arrived in Spain, I found that the people were white. They were Caucasian, not mixed, not even the slightest bit tan or all black haired and brown eyed. They were as European as all the rest of the Continent.
Passing through Basque Country and the future nation of Catalonia (Catalan) on a slow train along the Mediterranean ("Middle of the Earth," "Center of the World") coast, where were all the cacti, siestas, ponchos, and sombreros I had been taught to believe were what the Spanish brought to Mexico as gifts during their conquest, invasion, occupation, and migration?

That was all wiped away. These people were amazingly vibrant, markedly different than the northerners. I was living in England at the time, often passing through France, and I was not used to California-style vibrancy and fitness. It was suddenly and shockingly apparent like why Londoners winter in the sun-soaked Iberian Peninsula.
No one believed me back home or had never thought about it one way or the other.
Do Eastern Europeans count? Not so some.
"Why wouldn't they be white?"
"They're Spanish (Espanoles); they speak Spanish (Latin-light)!" I argued in vain.
"Yeah, but Spain is Europe."
"Is it?" Oh yeah, I guess it is, as much as the Germans and Scandinavians might not think so; they barely accept Greece and Macedonia as part of the Continental Club, and that's only for the glorious cultural contributions of the ancients.

If even Turkey and Anatolia can be "Europe," when they were formerly in "Asia Minor," then why wouldn't Spain be? The crowd at the concert above is what I saw, proof that the Conquistadors were not swarthy sailors living and taking wives in the Caribbean then traveling farther west to the Yucatan Peninsula and Mesoamerica to take over all that we now call "Latin America" and a goodly chunk of what the U.S. now claims as its own.
The more southern we travel, the more mixing
We get called Hispanic, white Latin, when we're brown and mixed with Indigenous blood, living here in the salad bowl/melting pot of The Angels (Los Angeles), where it gets confusing, growing up next to Kevin, throwing rocks at our neighbor Robbie Joiner. This being the case, who would guess that one of the greatest Buddhist communities in the world is forming in Spain?
Indeed, the cave dwellers will come to know the power of samadhi and glory of insight in time. The foundation is being set and it is already being done. What does "Spain" mean? It seems to be the word Sapien with the letters slightly scrambled, a placed where various kinds of human species lived, one we call "modern" and another "old," one Sapien and another Neanderthal. And I had to find meaning in it all, in a town of people mostly concerned with survival and fame. Alice Bag was a Latina punkette, the Germs were, Black Flag, Wasted Youth, Circle Jerks, FEAR...it was an amazing time, right on the heels of the 1960s.
Struggling artists are the poorest, but they regard themselves as "The Beautiful People" (think Marilyn Manson lyrics), so they fake it till they make it or get lost in a world of drugs.

It was the late 70s. There were still hippies on the streets. And the punks didn't like them, if only as a fashion choice. Peace and love were out, rebellion and hate were in. There was a still a draft. Cops were hateful as ever, shooting protesters they dubbed "rioters." Mexican Americans have been battling police and the establishment in this town since a century or more before that. Police are racist today. Painful progress has been made, but there's still a need for Latinx*/Hispanic Heritage Month.

*The -x replaces the gender markers -a and -o, female and male, inherent in Latin and its lengua franca Spanish, the sexist European language forced on the peoples of the Americas. All Mexicans are forced to learn Spanish to get by, but it is not the language of Mexico as most of us thoughtlessly imagine. It's the colonial language of conquest, domination, and genocide. Nahuatl and other Native American (First Nations) tongues are what Mexico spoke before Conquistadors forced them to do otherwise.
