Friends Beyond Death 3: MN 140 with Ayya Vimalanyani
(Buddhist Insights, 11/16/21) German Buddhist nun Ayya Vimalanyani reads from Bhikkhu Bodhi's translation of this sutra (suttacentral.net/mn140).

SUTRA: "The Exposition of the Elements"
The 6 Elements: Buddhist Insight Meditation on Interconnectedness (Ven. Bodhipaksa)
.
Then the Buddha thought, “This [Scythian] clansman has gone forth from the home life to the left-home life under me. Suppose I were to teach him the Dharma?”

The Buddha addressed Venerable Pukkusāti: “Monastic, I will teach you the Dharma. Listen and attend carefully to what I am about to say.”

— “Yes, friend,” Ven. Pukkusāti replied.

“Monastic, this person consists of six elements, six bases of contact, and eighteen kinds of mental exploration, and one has four foundations.

“The tides of conceiving do not sweep over one who stands on these foundations. And when the tides of conceiving no longer sweep over a person, one is called a ‘sage at peace.'
  1. “One should not neglect wisdom,
  2. should preserve truth,
  3. should cultivate letting go, and
  4. should train for peace.
“This is the summary of the exposition of the six elements.

“Monastic, ‘this person consists of six elements’ was said. With reference to what was this said? There are:
  1. the earth element,
  2. the water element,
  3. the fire element,
  4. the air element,
  5. the space element,
  6. the consciousness element.
“So it was with reference to this that it was said: Monastic, ‘this person consists of six elements.’” More
