Mrs. Ilse Koch: Nazi guard and sexual deviant
(World History) Buchenwald & Sachsenhausen - Holocaust. Oct. 16, 2022. Mrs. Ilse Koch was born Margarete Ilse Köhler on Sept. 22, 1906, in Dresden.

In 1932, one year before Adolf Hitler and his Nazi (National Socialist) Party came into power, Koch had joined the Nazi Party. In 1936, she got married to the commandant of Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, Karl Otto Koch.
Ilse Koch worked at Sachsenhausen as a guard and secretary.
In August 1937, Karl Otto was assigned to build a new concentration camp in Buchenwald. While he was known for his personal greed in the camps that he worked in, she was feared for her brutality.
At Buchenwald, she became known as "the witch."
She was obsessed with tattoos and used to ride her horse around the Buchenwald looking for tattooed prisoners. When she found one, she sent them to their death. But before they were killed and burned, she would cut out the part of the skin where the tattoo was located. She used to call these pieces of skin her “trophies,” as serial killers are in the habit of collecting.
She would go on to collect lampshades, book covers, as well as gloves and handbags – all made of human skin.
She shared her obsession with tattoos with Dr. Erich Wagner, allegedly her secret lover, who wanted to find the connection between tattoos and criminal tendencies.
Despite having three of her own children, she hated pregnant women and she used to beat them with a whip along the entire length of which pieces of a razor were inserted.
Koch allegedly also found pleasure in beating child inmates. She would laugh loudly when seeing them going to the gas chambers [to be deloused].
She was also a sexual deviant. She not only organized numerous orgies with SS men and their wives but also allegedly forced Jewish male prisoners to rape female prisoners in front of her.
She is said to have enjoyed walking around the camp half naked or in skimpy clothes, provoking prisoners to make eye contact with her. When they did, they were taken by the guards and shot in the head.
It was also reported that she had ordered prisoners to serve her while she was nude and enjoyed sexually humiliating the sex-starved prisoners.
In 1941, Buchenwald caught the attention of the Higher SS and Police Leader for Weimar Josias Waldeck, who in this position had supervisory authority over Buchenwald Concentration Camp.
Ilse Koch was accused of the embezzlement of over 700,000 Reichsmarks, and Karl Otto Koch was charged with both embezzlement and the unauthorized murder of three prisoners.
When it was revealed that the Kochs had used the massive Nazi apparatus to gain an enormous amount of wealth, their downfall became inevitable as all the possessions stolen from murdered Jews was regarded as the property of Hitler's Reich.

While she was acquitted for lack of evidence, Karl Otto Koch was executed by firing squad on April 5, 1945.
The Buchenwald Camp, the location of Koch’s alleged atrocities, was liberated later in April of 1945.
Ilse Koch was then tried at the Buchenwald trial, which began on April 11, 1947, in the internment camp of Dachau, where the former Dachau Concentration Camp had been located until late April 1945.
Out of 31 defendants, Ilse Koch was the only woman.
She was sentenced to life imprisonment, and her son Uwe, conceived while in custody, was born in October 1947.

Uwe’s father was another German prisoner.
Her sentence was initially commuted to four years, but after a general outcry, she was immediately indicted by a German court for instigation to murder in 135 cases.
The hearing of the second rrial opened on Nov. 27, 1950, and lasted seven weeks, during which 250 witnesses were heard, including 50 for the defense.

Koch collapsed and had to be carried from court in late December 1950 and again in January 1951. At least four witnesses for the prosecution testified that they had seen Koch choose tattooed prisoners, who were then killed, or had seen or been involved in the process of making human-skin lampshades from tattooed skin.
When on Jan. 15, 1951, the court pronounced its verdict in a 111-page-long decision sentencing Ilse Koch to life imprisonment, she was not present in court.
She made several petitions for a pardon, all of which were rejected by the Bavarian Ministry of Justice.
Ilse Koch was 60 years old when she hanged herself with a bedsheet after which she was buried in an unmarked grave.
There were no tears shed for Ilse Koch.

We're racist because American prison is racist. The SHU (Security Housing Unit, aka solitary confinement, "the hole") is a part of a prison with further restrictions, where guards further mistreat prisoners to exact revenge or to control them and model brutal behavior for them, which prisoners in turn inflict on one another and then on citizens outside of prison.
What horrors happen in U.S. prison -- and there are many including rape, extortion, cruelty, lack of compassion or sympathy, and all the worst human traits imaginable (greed, anger, delusion) -- are spurred by the treatment and torture of prisoners by the facility, warden, and fellow inmates. Prisoners run prisons because guards are too cowardly, too underpaid. too poorly staffed to do it themselves.
Nazis, white supremacy gang, Aryan Brotherhood, forced racial segregation
The system is at fault. Guards are trying to survive, prisoners are trying to survive, and prison officials are trying to capitalize on a pre-existing system. One unfairness grows into another. The end product is a toxic system that poisons society. Whatever happens in prison gets to the outside world. Enlightened self-interest teaches us that when we say "we don't care" about prisoners then we must not care too much about the world outside prison.
When people call for harsher and more expensive punishment as the solution, they are contributing to the problem, hardening prisoners and turning them out on a world that did not prevent their severe torture, neglect, and abuse in prison. Many prisoners may be horrible human beings, victims of abuse turned abusers or PTSD-suffering torture victims from the way they are tormented in prison, but they are yet human beings. What we allow to be done to the least of our brothers we do to ourselves. The test of a society is not how it treats its privileged members but how it treats its prisoners.
Supermax means "Super Maximum Security" prison. It's a code name that disguises the harshest prison system in the United States: total solitary confinement. Of the 2.2 million American citizens in American jails, it is said that 25,000 are locked up in these torture facilities (as defined by international standards). Shut in a windowless cell for 23 hours a day, with no human contact other than with the guards, and one hour inside in a cement "yard." For any exercise at all, it's just one hour’s worth of walking around a concrete pit 16 feet by 10 feet. Often inmates are kept for life. This disciplinary measure, presented as the answer to violence in prisons, has never been proven to work anywhere. How does one live from day to day in total solitary confinement? Let's go on a journey to northern California, to the corridors of Pelican Bay, the first Supermax prison in the country.

How and why do citizens end up in jail and prison? What happens to them once they are there, whether rightly or wrongly convicted, set up or following the path laid out for them? Most importantly, where is the resistance building, the movement building, the engines of change inside and out that can end this profit-making nightmare based on human suffering that leads to harm and more suffering on all sides?

KIEV, Ukraine - Protesters
toppled a monument to Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin on Sunday during
the biggest march and rally in central Kiev since Pres. Viktor
Yanukovich galvanized his opposition by turning down a trade deal with
the European Union (EU).
The protesters blocked
and barricaded government offices and said they were giving Yanukovich
48 hours to disband his government [just as happened in Iceland] before marching on his country
residence near Kiev. A government spokesman said Yanukovich's
administration was "ready for negotiations."
In turning down the trade deal with the EU, Yanukovich was in effect
asserting that Russia remained Ukraine's key trading partner. The
country [formerly a part of Finland] is politically and geographically divided between those who
favor ties to Russia and those who would like to see Ukraine more
aligned with Western Europe.
That gave the toppling of the
Lenin statue symbolic resonance -- despite the fact that most Lenin
statues in Russia itself were torn down during the collapse of the
Soviet Union in 1991. Statues of the Soviet leader were once ubiquitous
throughout the East bloc, but those that remain are more likely to be
museum pieces than public memorials.
No police officers could be seen anywhere in the vicinity of Taras
Shevchenko Boulevard, where the granite and marble monument was brought
crashing into the street by a group of young protesters. "It is amazing how the authorities allowed Lenin to go down!" said
Sergei Andriyenko, a 51-year-old Kiev businessman who applauded the
action. "Where were the police, where were the communists who were

From the auction block to the cell block, there is a trajectory from slavery to Jim Crow to the best pretext for systematic racism and segregation ever devised, the "War on Drugs."
The latter has resulted in mass jailings characterized by deep racial disparities.
The US is likely to send about one-third of young black men to jail. The criminal "justice system" -- which is more criminal than just -- functions as a modern system of racial control. Millions of people, primarily poor people of color, are being swept into the nation’s prisons at a profit to some and a cost to all.

Those millions are then relegated to a permanent subordinate-class status which strips them of basic civil and human rights supposedly won for all during the Civil Rights era. The numbers are numbing. In all, the US holds 2.3 million behind bars and 4.8 million more on probation and parole.
The more people who are locked up, with just cause or not, the more some profit: police departments who get additional funding for more incarcerations rather than lower crime rates, who keep assets seized even if no one is charged or, if charged and tried, found not guilty.
Not only do rural areas get paid to have prisons located in their precincts, millions are employed as guards and other functionaries within the "prison-industrial complex." The industrial part of the complex is called the Corrections Corporation of America, the largest private prison owner and operator.
Prisons are bad enough when run by the state, miserable warehouses with torture and abuse dispensing collective punishment and wasting lives rather than rehabilitating anyone. They get much worse when a corporation cuts corners at every turn to increase their profit margin at the cost of human misery and a disservice to society.
It took years before allegations of Harry Nicoletti's abuse were investigated by the state Dept. of Corrections and charged by the DA (Michael Henninger/Post-Gazette.com).
From State Pens to Penn State Mumia Abu Jamal (Prison Radio) (Nov. 11, 2011) The shocking child sex scandal rocking (Paterno and) Penn State University in State College, PA (and now Bernie Fine at Syracuse) is an explosion of almost nuclear proportions.
It has all the elements designed to produce a media firestorm: fame, money, illicit sex, deception -- and betrayal. At the core of it is betrayal of the country's deepest religion -- sports -- and of those we claim to adore and revere most, the children.
The scandal has shown how great wealth, fame, and the business of college sports corrupted everything and everyone, to keep the gravy train rolling. Penn State's football program is an extremely lucrative gravy train, bringing in tens of millions of dollars.
Penn State Univ. itself is the biggest employer in State College and one of the biggest colleges in the US with over 45,000 students.
The gravy here flowed thick and heavy. And like other powerful institutions, its sins were covered so as not to rock the money-making boat.
It reminds us of the great scandals that shook the foundations of the Catholic Church in the 1990s, the ripples of which are still with us.
They remind us that rape is about power -- and sex is but a tool of domination of the weak by the powerful.
That same dynamic is at work whether it is a man and a woman, a priest and a child, or a coach and a boy.
But is it the same when it is two men?
How about when one man is a prison guard [pictured left] and other a prisoner?
When news leaked out several months ago that rapes were widespread in the blocks of the state prison in Pittsburgh, PA, the reaction was largely local, mostly concentrated in Western Pennsylvania.
Here it has all the dynamics of the rape culture we have discussed: It is the powerful against the powerless.
Indeed, in some respects it is more pronounced, for systems are in place to protect women and children (whether they are followed or not is another question), which necessitates hiding these things.
Penn. prison guard Harry Nicoletti, 59, was arrested and accused of sexually and physically abusing more than 20 inmates, according to the Allegheny County DA. He faces 92 counts of institutional sexual assault, official oppression, terroristic threats, and simple assault.
But in prison, the indicted guard, Harry Nicoletti, allegedly used his power as a state prison official to threaten men he raped and abused with being sent to the "hole" [isolation] and death if they told.
He reportedly ordered prisoners to contaminate food with spit, urine, and feces. He punched, slapped, and spat on prisoners. He used racist language with complete abandon. And these things went on for years.
Schools, churches, and prisons -- institutions of immense social power, exploiting, abusing, and hurting the powerless -- are places that seemingly attract rapeholics.

As it turns out, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDRC) has continued its propaganda campaign or public relations effort to undermine the prisoner hunger strike protesting torture, inhumane conditions, and unfair assignment to psychologically damaging (and extraordinarily expensive to taxpayers) super maximum imprisonment.
The hunger strike is not over -- in spite of the fact that this is exactly what the CDRC reported. Knowing that there was no resolution but reporting one means the difficult to trust CDRC is now caught spreading disinformation to spare itself embarrassment as helpless prisoners call attention to their treatment and the injustices inherent in the present system.
We are sad to have reported a resolution along with the misled mainstream media. It is not possible to contact prisoners because all of their activities are controlled, censored, and adjudicated by prison officials. Therefore there was no independent confirmation possible to verify their claims. Lawyers are attempting contact to find out exactly where the hunger strike stands.
Inmates who began ahunger strike at Pelican Bay State Prison on July 1 to protest [torture] their treatment inside the facility and the Security Housing Unit have ended the effort, officials with the CDCR announced today. The inmates halted the hunger strike Wednesday "after they better understood CDCR's plans, developed since January, to review and change some policies regarding SHU housing and gang management. These changes, to date, include providing cold-weather caps, wall calendars, and some educational opportunities for SHU inmates." More
Why is Wisdom Quarterly Covering This?
We do not work for the prisoners, and we do not work for the wardens. But we oftentimes do work for Kwan Yin, the Buddhist "Goddess" of Compassion.
A bodhisattva (someone intent on supreme enlightenment to benefit all beings) does not limit her compassion, so why would we limit ours? As a society we imprison more citizens than any country in the world. It has been made into a for-profit industry (the prison industrial complex) with a goal to imprison and go worldwide.
We are not being enriched or profiting in any way as a state or nation. We are less safe for it, and poorer. That profit goes to private industry and to a massive prison guard's union, which lines the pockets of politicians who sing themselves to election with the refrain "tough on crime, tough on crime."
This "toughness" we support by voting for such politicians out of fear is bankrupting us, impoverishing us ethically and spiritually, debasing our humanity, and NOT making us safer.
There may be a worldwide fascist movement (remnants of Nazis who were brought to this country to work on nuclear bombs, space travel, intercontinental missiles, social control, propaganda, public relations, etc.), active CIA covert operations, hypocrisy from Israel and other nations on a level never before seen). But that does not mean we have to cave in to the insanity or the untruths that hold it in place.
Ordinary citizens cheer for the killing and torture of our prisoners in the name of revenge -- calling it "justice" and calling themselves "good" for doing it.
Good (such as justice, progress, and humanity) is not brought about by "bad" means -- police misconduct, kangaroo court trials, routine torture, inhumane isolation, degradation, rape, bestial violence, careless misappropriation of tax dollars, state-sponsored executions.
We think it's okay so long as we imagine these injustices are being done to the "other." There is no other.
WE are a society and prisoners are part of it. As such, everyone here is entitled to fairness, protection, and compassion.
Why does Wisdom Quarterly cover this unpopular segment of society? A better question might be why others interested in peace and justice or socially-engaged Buddhism do not.
The Buddha never limited his compassion to those deemed "good." In fact, our compassion is needed most for the least among us.
"The real measure of a society is how it treats its weakest members."
The weakest means its imprisoned citizens, the disenfranchised, impoverished, jobless, its animals. These are in need of more compassion, not less.
There are unconfirmed reports that Pelican Bay torture (Special Handling Unit) victims have begun taking food. Their hunger strike to call attention to deplorable conditions tantamount to CIA-sponsored secret prisons on foreign soil. Pelican Bay is in California and represents a kind of prison built for psychological and physical torture.
SuperMax housing is not more secure housing, as it is intended to be. It is less safe by virtue of the fact that victims of this kind of treatment go insane by being deprived of human contact. Worse is the fact that what gets one sent to such facilities has little to do with the danger they present. Any documented affiliation with a gang -- even standing in a picture with a prisoner who is later determined to be a member -- means permanent lock up in maximum security. The real reason for this? Pressure by California's largest and most powerful union, the Prison Guard's Union ensuring is growth and success. As difficult as this is to believe, three-strikes legislation was also lobbied for and financed by this union. And going deeper, the real reason behind this SuperMax movement is a worldwide fascist movement. The Nazis did not lose WW II as we are taught. They went underground (often invited to America to work and prosper here teaching SS techniques to clandestine services like the CIA, NASA, FBI, NSA, Mi5, Mi6, Moussad, KGB, and so on around the world. Impossible? Our CIA would never do that or teach others to do that?
PrisonerHungerStrikeSolidarity, July 20, 2011 Reaching at least 6,600 prisoners across 13 prisons, this massive and inspiring act of solidarity and people power across prison-manufactured and exacerbated racial and geographic lines has dumbfounded the CDCR (California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, nothing about routine torture). While the daily numbers of hunger strikers fluctuates, the CDCR is underestimating how many people inside prison are participating in and supporting this strike.
Richard C. Hoagland put together the pieces -- NAZIs, NASA, and global fascism because the NAZI movement itself lived on stronger than ever after WW II.
