Unexpected rules for Amish females

Karen M. Johnson-Weiner
There's little use in talking about the American Amish, much less Amish females, as if they were all members of a monolithic group.

The reality is that there are multiple "Amish" orders, all with different rules collected in a broad set of often-unspoken guidelines known as the Ordnung.

These rules dictate the lives of everyone in the patriarchal Germanic Amish Christian faith, laying out community-specific guidelines on everything from the depth of a man's hat brim to whether or not it's okay to have a refrigerator in one's home.

Anything she can do, I can do better. I'm a man!
Generally speaking, all Amish settlements emphasize plain, unadorned dress styles, rural living, pacifism, and some separation from the outside world — and no, they're not the same as Mennonites or Quakers or Shakers or Puritans.

Ruined by the lavender menace?
When it comes to both community and family life, females are almost always expected to be subservient to men. Yet, they also take the lead on many homemaking matters, including child rearing, food preparation, cleaning, and working on the farm.

It all seems rather simple. Amish girls are expected to observe rules that demand they remain subservient, wear plain clothing, and remember to be faithful and modest into womanhood.

However, these directives can get quite surprising and sometimes elaborate, depending on where a female lives and her personal convictions.

I can run my own biz.
For instance, it wouldn't be beyond the pale to see an Amish woman leave the family farm and run her own business.

Think you already know everything about the rules of an Amish woman's life? Think again.

The rules of Amish female power are more complex than most Americans think

Being submissive is a common rule for Amish girls, but it's not just a matter of going along with a father, brother, uncle, or husband's decisions or quietly following the rules of male church elders.

In fact, all Amish people are expected to submit in one way or another. Males are directed to submit to God and to treat their wives well and care for them with love and respect (though there are also reports of widespread abuse in some communities).

There's also a rather tricky biblical verse, Galatians 3:28, in which readers are informed that "there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus."

To balance this, the Amish generally agree that males and females ought to have separate roles in their communities but that the work done by females is theoretically just as important as that of males. And though Amish females may not have official power in their communities, they wield practical power in everyday life, such as when they organize home or church activities.
  • The film My Big Fat Greek Wedding made this age-old distinction clear: "The man is the head of the house, the man is the head of the house...but the woman is the neck."
Everyone is responsible for his or her own spiritual life, too. As one woman in the highly conservative Swartzentruber Amish group states:

"The Amish way is that the men have to go ahead of the women [during baptism], but the women get baptized just as well as the men do." More: grunge.com (Unexpected rules Amish women have to follow)

The Lives of Amish Women
Karen M. Johnson-Weiner's on Amish Women
(Kindle Edition) Author Karen M. Johnson-Weiner has 4.2 out of 5 stars (with 6 reviews). Presenting a challenge to popular stereotypes, this book is an intimate exploration of the religiously defined roles of Amish females and how these roles have changed over time.

Continuity and change, tradition and dynamism shape the lives of the Amish and make their experiences both distinctive and diverse.

On the one hand, a principled commitment to living Old Order lives, purposely out of step with the cultural mainstream, has provided Amish females with a good deal of constancy. Even in relatively more progressive Amish communities, women still engage in activities common to their counterparts in earlier times: gardening, homemaking, and childrearing.

On the other hand, these persistent themes of domestic labor and the responsibilities of motherhood have been affected by profound social, economic, and technological changes up through the 21st century, shaping Amish females' lives in different ways and resulting in increasingly varied experiences.

In The Lives of Amish Women, Johnson-Weiner draws on her 35 years of fieldwork in Amish communities and her correspondence with Amish women to consider how the religiously defined roles of Amish women have changed as Amish churches have evolved.

Looking in particular at females' lives and activities at different ages and in different communities, Johnson-Weiner explores the relationship between changing patterns of social and economic interaction with mainstream society and women's family, community, and church roles.

What does it mean, Johnson-Weiner asks, for an Amish woman to be humble when she is the owner of a business that serves people internationally?

Is a childless Amish woman or a single Amish woman still a "Keeper at Home" in the same way as a woman raising a family? What does Gelassenheit—giving oneself up to God's will [not in a slavish way but rather "'tranquil submission' in the Christian mystical tradition"]—mean in a subsistence-level agrarian Amish community, and is it at all comparable to what it means in a wealthy settlement where some members may be millionaires?

Illuminating the key role Amish women play in maintaining the spiritual and economic health of their church communities, this wide-ranging book touches on a number of topics, including early Anabaptist women and Amish pioneers to North America;
  • stages of life;
  • marriage and family;
  • events that bring women together;
  • women as breadwinners;
  • women who do not meet the Amish norm (single women, childless women, widows); and
  • even what books Amish women are reading.
Aimed at anyone who is interested in the Amish experience, The Lives of Amish Women will help readers understand better the costs and benefits of being an Amish woman in a modern world and will challenge the stereotypes, myths, and imaginative fictions about Amish women that have shaped how they are viewed by mainstream society. FREE LUIGI MANGIONE

Any relation to Chuck? Why does no one mention that? Is it because all the Mangiones are nuts? We mean talented men full of potential. Americans LOVE guns. Americans hate insurance companies. Americans love bad boys. What did the Buddha teach? The Buddha taught that what happens to us in our lives has a lot to do with our karma (deeds). What is that karma based on? Karma is rooted in six causes: greed (lust), hatred (aversion/fear), delusion (wrong view) or nongreed, nonhatred, nondelusion. If we are not mindful of what roots are growing, what sprouts cannot surprise us.

Rebel Christians: Fox's Quakers in US

The Quakers: History, Beliefs, Paradoxes | Society of Friends
(Captivating History) Many other mainline Protestant Christians viewed George Fox and the Quakers as a dangerous sect, so much so that they pressured the British Parliament to pass the Quakers Act of 1662.
  • Why were so many Colonists (Pilgrims) Quakers? We were taught those settler colonialists were all [hateful, genocidal] Puritans. When Puritans tortured Quakers
This act set forth in law the “prescribed form” of prayer and worship as designated by the state. It was a formula that specifically left the traditions of the Quakers out.

Unable to gain acceptance in England, the Quakers would soon leave the place of their origin altogether and try their luck in a brave New World on another continent.

Who is the founder of Quakerism (Society of Friends)?
Quaker George Fox
George Fox (1624-1691 O.S.) was an English Dissenter and a founder of the Religious Society of Friends, commonly known as the Quakers.

The son of a Leicestershire weaver, he lived in times of social upheaval and war. He rebelled against religious and political authorities by proposing an unusual, uncompromising approach to the Christian faith.

He travelled throughout Britain as a dissenting preacher, performed hundreds of healings, and was often persecuted by the disapproving authorities [3].

In 1669, he married Margaret Fell, widow of wealthy supporter Thomas Fell; she was a leading Friend (Quaker).

His ministry expanded, and he toured North America and the three Low Countries in Europe.

He was arrested and jailed numerous times for his radical beliefs. He spent his final decade working in London to organize the expanding Quaker movement.

Despite disdain from some Puritans and Anglicans, he was viewed with respect by the American Quaker convert William Penn and the Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell. More

FBI director casts doubts on Trump's ear

Trump on Truth Social: 'No glass, no shrapnel,' FBI Director Wray says it's 'unclear' what struck him
(The Hill) July 26, 2024: Drew Petrimoulx chats with The Hill’s national political reporter and author of the 12:30 report Cate Martel about former Pres. FBI director casts doubts on Trump being struck by bullet during assassination attempt
FBI Director Christopher Wray
has raised doubts as to whether or not Donald Trump was struck by a bullet during the assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally earlier this month.
  • Trump was never struck, and the whole Maxi Pad has been a LIE? He is faking a big injury when nothing but a cut from jumping to the stage in fear or being dry humped dogpiled by the mostly Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) substitutes for the real Secret Service? Wow, what a fake.
(MSNBC) Rachel Maddow chews up Old Man

But he's wearing such a big bandage! Must be bad
Director Wray testified before the House Judiciary Committee yesterday (Wednesday, July 24) about the ongoing investigation into the attempt on the former president’s life and the response of law enforcement agencies that day.

When questioned by committee chairman Jim Jordan as to whether the FBI had accounted for all of the bullets at the scene, Director Wray said that eight spent rounds were recovered from the rooftop of the building from which the gunman opened fire.

“With respect to former president Trump, there’s some question about whether or not it’s a bullet or shrapnel that hit his ear,” the FBI chief added.

“As I sit here right now, I don’t know whether that bullet… in addition to causing the grazing, could have landed somewhere else.”

He added: “But I believe we’ve accounted for all the shots in the cartridges.”

[Alleged lone wolf] gunman Thomas Crooks [allegedly] fired a volley of eight rounds towards Trump using an AR-15 rifle while the former president stood on stage speaking to rallygoers in Butler, Pennsylvania, killing one rallygoer and wounding two others.

Former White House physician Ronny Jackson has said that Trump was shot in the ear creating a 2cm-wide wound, according to a memo shared with Axios.

The former president has also repeatedly said that he was struck in the ear by a bullet. More + VIDEO

Secret Service allowed Crooks to shoot

Accused would-be assassin TM Crooks
Rabid Jewish right wing conservative Mark Levin has a daily radio show on Westwood One (Salem Radio's 870 AM, The Answer, in LA). On July 15 his show ran a tirade of unbelievable accusations about how the Secret Service was fully aware of Mr. Crooks. They saw him, photographed him, asked about him, sent a report about him up the chain of command, and ultimately did nothing. It is said the real life SS Sniper Wolf had Crooks in his sights. But for all that, he was allowed to carry on until after he took his shot (5 to 10 shots). We can't help but believe that if he had succeeded, this would be as big a story as JFK and patsy Lee Harvey Oswald, who didn't shoot but gets all the blame by design. The grassy knoll, the shooter(s) from the front, and other riflemen spotted on the scene and never accounted for, the perfect condition of a fake magic bullet placed behind JFK's head on the gurney, the secret autopsy, all of which point to a CIA plan and extensive cover up (including a phony Warren Report), not to mention the totally unjustified continued classification of vital records for another 75 years or until anyone who cares is long since passed away, suggest there is more to this attempted murder than just some white Republican gun nut with a grudge against Trump's personality shooting because Trump came to his neighborhood. Something is amiss. Who knows what but something. The Indian media seems to be much more upfront than the corporate mainstream American media.

New details surrounding Trump gunman emerge as Secret Service comes under increased scrutiny
(KTLA 5) July 16, 2024: The FBI searched the home of the 20-year-old Pennsylvania man who tried to assassinate Donald Trump at a rally on Saturday as the Secret Service comes under increased scrutiny for their security preparations. KTLA 5's Annie Rose Ramos reports.

New 'proof' against U.S. [Nazi-like] Secret Service: SS sniper 'saw' Trump shooter Tommy Crooks but 'did nothing'
(Times of India) July 15, 2024: New split-screen video shows moments leading up to Donald Trump assassination attempt. The video has sparked online discussion about the Secret Service’s response or lack of one.

Many attendees at Trump's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, noticed the gunman on the roof with a rifle long before the shooting.

The Secret Service sniper is also accused of noticing the shooter from his vantage point on another roof, calculating his distance but still doing nothing.

[One Republican politician has gone so far as to state that "Joe Biden called for this." Of course, according to Trump's position on presidential immunity, that's okay for a president to do, so Genocide Joe would, if he had called for this assassination, just have been operating within his official capacity to win the next presidential election.]

Chaplain on Trump's near-death experience

How can I explain? I was on stage when I knew I was shot, ripped my skin like this...
How photographers view the photos of Trump's assassination attempt (MSN)
.
What would have happened to all my money?!
Had he not shifted his head just a few inches to the right, former Pres. Trump likely would not have survived the [attempt to blow his head off as an] attempt on his life on Saturday [as missing his head may not have killed him like that headless chicken that survived until dying of an unfortunate food accident much later or it might have killed him JFK style for everyone in the country to see on live TV].
In his own words, Trump shouldn’t be here. How such an event might change the former president remains to be seen, but the [mentally declining] 78-year-old has already pivoted his messaging ahead of the Republican National Convention this week, toning down his typical lambasts of the Democrats and highlighting calls for unity and civility [like his classy wife seems to have done].

Reverend Catherine Duncan is an ordained minister in Minnesota and chaplain at hospice [near death care] and trauma centers. She has helped hundreds of patients pass to the other side [in the afterlife and the lives to come when they are sure to be reborn many times over].

Based on her vast experience, Rev. Duncan predicts a spiritual awakening [possibly on the scale of the reformed tyrant Gilgamesh in ancient Sumerian cylindrical texts] in Trump that leads him to become more centrist in his political views.

Trump was rushed by Secret Service [after being allowed to stand up and become a clear and obvious target able to receive the "kill shot" if the shooters were still taking aim] in the seconds after [the first] shots were fired at his Pennsylvania rally on Saturday, with one bullet grazing his right ear.

Scared, confused, Trump left his body on the floor of the stage for a moment
.
NDEs (Ginette Biro)
American Rev. Duncan told DailyMail.com: "There's a lot of chaos in the United States with the election. Donald Trump picked Ohio senator J.D. Vance as his running mate on Monday afternoon, choosing a grassroots favorite ahead of more seasoned political operators. The former president left it until the last possible moment, using all his showman skills to leave the world guessing, before opting for 39-year-old Vance after the Republican National Convention had already begun in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

"And I think that experience, I would sense, with Trump, it opens up your sense of being alive, your sense of feeling, your sense of experience, and how do you want to move forward?

Trump on Middle Way, Love, Kindness
Will D.J. Trump become a Budai-loving Buddhist, preaching the Middle Way and metta?
.
"And there's already been some rumblings politically about unity. Can there be unity? And I could see Trump leaning towards a more middle way and unity among everyone."

Hospice chaplain added: "This could be a significant turning point for Trump for embracing the good, embracing how we can treat each other with love and kindness and how can we find a middle way in all the chaos right now. 'I think it's a very strong message. And I think it can definitely touch people's hearts."

Many have accused Trump of leaning into religion to gain favor with Republican voters during his first presidential run, and they questioned the sincerity of his faith.

But Rev. Duncan said that close brushes with death can completely alter a person’s worldview regardless of how devout they were, "and every one of us can change and open and choose how we live our life."

Mr. Trump’s Senior Campaign Advisor Jason Miller told NBC the former president "feels very fortunate’ to be alive. And Mr. Trump said on his Truth Social media site on Sunday that, "it was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening." More

The bullet messed up my hair.
(WQ) If the news is to be believed, because Trump says it is all "fake news," TV footage shows him speaking in Pennsylvania when loud shots are heard, he grabs at his right ear, and he goes down. The stage is then swarmed with black suits waving automatic weapons -- and special ops paramilitary take the stage and point rifles at the crowd of flag wearing rural folk.

While from the camera's point of view looking dead on at Trump's corpse, which somehow remains alive, is brought to its feet, blood smeared around his right ear, near his big pink bald spot where his wiry combover does not cover.

The crowd behind him is looking in the wrong direction, to their left as if a shooter is there or someone on the ground. They do not rush him or think to pull on their cameras and take live footage, but then Trump brings the audience to their feet by raising his fist in a defiant manner and shouting what a lipreader would swear was, "F*ck, f*ck, f*ck!" which the mainstream media is reporting was actually. "Fight, fight, fight!" Pennsylvania police report that the Secret Service murdered the suspected shooter and at least one other person, presumably caught in the crossfire of agents bearing down on suspect.
