The best time to meditate at many celebrations

VESAK (Pali Vesākha), also called Wesak, Vesaka, Buddha Jayanti [12], Buddha Purnima [13], Visak Bochea, and Buddha Day, is the most significant religious holiday on the Buddhist calendar.

According to American Theravada Buddhist and Theosophist Henry Steel Olcott (1832-1907), it's a kind of "Buddhist Christmas" for celebrated around the world.

It is traditionally observed by Buddhists in the West, South Asia, Southeast Asia, as well as in Tibet and Mongolia [14].

It is among the most important Buddhist festivals, for it marks three remarkable events that all took place on the same full moon day of the Indian month of Vesak (Vesakha). That moon is visible above the USA tonight, the full moon day in May 2026.

There is a "New Buddhism"

The festival commemorates the birth, enlightenment (Pali maha-bodhi, "great awakening"), and final nirvana (parinibbana) of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha Shakyamuni in Theravada Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism, and Navayana [15].

The name Vesak is derived from the Pali term Vesākha (Sanskrit Vaiśākha) for the lunar month of Vaisakha, which is the month the Bodhisatta (Sanskrit Bodhisattva) was born [16].

In Mahayana Buddhist traditions, the holiday is known by its Sanskrit name (Vaiśākha) and variations of it. East Asian traditions celebrate the Buddha's birthday, typically occurring around the traditional timing of Vesak.

But the Buddha's great awakening and passing away are celebrated as separate holidays at other times on the Buddhist calendar, called Bodhi Day and Nirvana Day.

Ven. Mahinda was ordained in 1976 as a Buddhist monk in the Sri Lankan Theravada tradition under the tutelage of the late Ven. Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda Nayaka Thera, a well-known Sri Lankan monk residing in Malaysia for more than 50 years. After his ordination, Bhante undertook a Buddhist studies program at the Paramadhamma Buddhist Institute in Sri Lanka from 1977 to 1982. He was trained in meditation by several well-known masters in Sri Lanka, India, Burma, and Thailand. He was also inspired by Mahayana masters from China, Taiwan, Korea, and Japan, as well as by Vajrayana masters from Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, and India. Bhante has taught mindfulness and metta meditation for more than 30 years in 20 countries. His participation in inter-religious conferences and Dharma propagation has taken him to more than 30 countries. Currently, he is the abbot of the Aloka Meditation Centre in Australia (AMC); founder, spiritual director of the Australian Buddhist Mission Inc. (ABM); Buddhist chaplain at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS); trustee of the University Buddhist Education Foundation (UBEF); and Training Committee member and training course presenter of the Australian Association of Buddhist Counsellors and Psychotherapists (AABCAP). He is the founder and spiritual director of the Aloka Foundation, Malaysia; religious patron of the Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia (YBAM); religious advisor to the Buddhist Missionary Society, Malaysia and a number of other Buddhist organizations in East and West Malaysia and Singapore.

Look for the Earth's timekeeper the Moon.

It's easy to figure out the exact day: Determine when the month of Vaisakha falls then look for the full moon. This year it coincides with May, and the moon is full on the 6th and/or 7th.

The exact date of Vesak is based on Asian lunisolar calendars and is primarily celebrated in the Indian month of Vaisakaha on the Buddhist calendar and the Hindu (Vedic) calendar.

Birth, Awakening, Rest: Happy Vesak Day!

The Buddha's Birthday (Vesak) is the ancient name of the month the Buddha-to-be (Bodhisatta) Prince Siddhartha was born, attained enlightenment (bodhi) thus becoming the Buddha, and passed into final nirvana (parinirvana). All of these happened on the full moon night of the same month, in different years, of course.

When Prince Siddhartha Gautama of the Shakiyan (Scythian) clan was born is not known exactly. But it is generally agreed that he reached enlightenment and began teaching the path to awakening 2,600 years ago when he was 35. He had renounced the throne and left home at 29 to undertake a spiritual quest.

On what day is the Buddha's Birthday? That's simple. Calculate thus:

• the first full moon day of the sixth month of the lunar calendar
• which would be the fourth month of the Chinese calendar
• except in years in which there's an extra full moon
• and then the Buddha's birthday falls on the seventh month
• except where it starts a week earlier
• while in Tibet it's usually a month later
• but in Japan, the Buddha's birthday is always on April 8.

In South Korea, the Buddha's birthday is a gala week-long celebration that ends on the first full moon day of the lunar month Vesakha, which usually falls in May. This full moon day is the most commonly observed date for the Buddha's birthday. Dates for upcoming celebrations of the Buddha's birthdays are:

• 2016: May 14
• 2017: May 3
• 2018: May 22

Throughout South Korea, city streets and temples are decorated with lanterns. At Jogyesa Temple in Seoul, the first day begins with religious ceremonies, followed by a street fair near the temple. In the evening a gala lantern parade stretches for miles through the heart of Seoul.

The Buddha's Birthday in Southeast Asia

Theravada is the dominant form of Buddhism in Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Thailand (Siam), Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, and Laos. Theravadins combine the observance of the Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and final nirvana into one holiday called Vesak, Visakha, or Wesak (the name of the month on the ancient Indian calendar of this thrice blessed day) sometimes "Buddha Day."

 

Vesak is the most joyous day of the year for Theravada Buddhists because in ancient times all three events occurred on the same day, with the same full moon overhead (on different years of course). It is marked by visits to temples, monasteries (viharas), candlelight processions. and observance of Uposatha Precepts. Dates for upcoming Vesak observances are:

• 2016: May 20
• 2017: May 10
• 2018: May 21 or 22

The Buddha's Birthday in Tibet

Saga Dawa is the entire fourth month of the Tibetan calendar, which usually begins in May and ends in June. The seventh day of Saga Dawa is the date of the historical Buddha's birth for Tibetans.

 

However, the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and entry into nirvana at his passing are observed together on the 15th day of Saga Dawa, called Saga Dawa Duchen. This is the single most important holiday for Tibetan Buddhism [Vajrayana], usually observed with pilgrimages and other visits to temples and shrines.

• 2018: May 29

The Buddha's Birthday in Japan

In Japan, the Buddha's birthday is called Hanamatsuri, or “Flower Festival." On this day people bring fresh flowers to temples in remembrance of the Buddha's birth in a grove of blossoming trees.
