The most interesting thing about Irish American singer and lead vocalist for the Germs Darby Crash (Jan Paul Beahm) is that he was a Buddhist in 1970s Los Angeles. He alludes to it in the song "The Slave."

So long before there was a Nirvana, long before Darby's guitarist and best friend Pat Smear began playing for Nirvana, there was already interest in bringing about "the end of all suffering," which is the literal meaning of the Sanskrit term Nirvana. Female bassist Lorna Doom went off into oblivion or obscurity, but drummer Don Bolles went on to local greatness with Goth punk 45 Grave. Of course, Darby was a troubled teen in Hollywood, California, so he had bigger things to worry about than ending suffering. He had addictions to develop, dysfunctional coping mechanisms, and remembering to use the microphone near his mouth during live performances on his mind.

They'll be the ruin of most rockers who think they'll be different and go untouched by the predictable three-stage tragedy of use, abuse, and demise. Good thing Joan Jett recorded and produced them so well before it was too late.

Why is she driving him crazy? It's because my Patron's friend is convinced that there is ONLY ONE true religion, one way or path, and she thinks anyone who doesn't follow it -- that is, anyone who doesn't go "full Yazoo" -- is on AC/DC's Highway to Hell.

Is there ONLY ONE TRUE WAY? My Patron wants to know. Yes, is my answer. There IS just one true way.

Unfortunately, it's different for absolutely everyone! Let's touch on a lot of the basics that make Zen [and other forms of Buddhism] different from "religions."

For one thing, in Zen there is nothing to "believe" in [except maybe Taoism]. There is a practice, and there are principles, and the practitioner puts those principles into practice. That's kind of it.

What is Catholicism? It's Universalism

The main practice is zazen ("sitting meditation"), often defined as shikantaza ("just sitting"). Through this practice, attention is cultivated. But even this is saying too much.

Speaking of not speaking, we could say that Zen is the practice of not filling silences. To wit, there is the Great Silence from which we all come and to which we all go. Religion kinda sorta sometimes puts a great big Jesus statue right in the center of that silence, or a great big Buddha statue right there in the middle of serene silence.

It tries to fill the void, the peace of silence, as if it could improve on it, gilding the lily, giving the snake legs, papering over the gaps and blanks, pretending that we can fill the not-knowing with some kind of knowing.

One can't reason with blind faith, so what talking?

But in the end, the job of a spiritual practice is not to remove uncertainty. Rather, in my experience at least, a practice humbles us before that uncertainty. There's a big difference. Every time I think I finally found the One True Way, something changes -- me, the world around me, the situation, life -- and I have to change along with it, grow, go with the flow, and keep going, keep living, keep not knowing. No fake certainty!

Hidden along the Taldy River in Central Kazakhstan’s Karaganda region, this monument, known as the Pyramid of Karazhartas (Begazy Dandybai Mausolea) sheds light on a civilization that once thrived in the Late Bronze Age.

The Begazy-Dandibay culture, which built this structure, flourished in central Kazakhstan during this period.

These semi-sedentary people mastered metallurgy and relied on animal husbandry. Their ability to trade metals across Eurasia fueled economic prosperity and gave rise to a powerful aristocratic class.

Historians and archeologists leading the excavation believe the pyramid was a mausoleum for one of these elite figures.

Episode 6, the "Lost Cities of the Ancient World," uncovers the incredible story of the Smithsonian's G.E. Kincaid and his mysterious find in the Grand Canyon, Arizona.

In 1909, G.E. Kincaid, an explorer working for the Smithsonian Museum, set out on a final expedition to explore the Grand Canyon.

After arriving and speaking with locals, he learned of hidden mysteries, treasures, and an underground city said to be full of Egyptian hieroglyphs and East Indian statues (the Buddha).

With rumors abounding that the U.S. government would soon restrict access to this entire area, Kincaid seized this last opportunity to investigate.

While navigating the Colorado River, Kincaid discovered strange sedimentary rocks and a hidden cave entrance high up from the shore. Entering, he found carved markings on the walls, indicating previous human habitation.

As he ventured deeper, he encountered passageways leading in various directions, with walls adorned with what seemed to be ancient language symbols.

Local tribes had mentioned a secret underground city, said to have been discovered by their ancestors. Fascinated, Kincaid continued exploring, finding over 100 rooms containing copper and clay utensils and weapons. Among the artifacts, he discovered a Buddha statue sitting cross-legged, holding a lotus or lily flower.

Realizing the enormity of his find, Kincaid sent artifacts and a letter to the Smithsonian Museum. The museum quickly dispatched Professor S.A. Jordan and a team of experts.

Jordan's team found evidence of a sophisticated society, including kitchen areas, large granaries, and dining rooms. They estimated that around 500 people once lived there.

As they delved more deeply, they found a cavernous hall full mummies, all male, possibly warriors. The resemblance of some artifacts to those of ancient Indian and Egyptian civilizations baffled the team.

Despite their efforts, their research remained incomplete due to dangerous areas within the cave.

Written records not good enough

News of the discovery leaked, leading to a lengthy article being published in the Arizona Gazette. The American government swiftly intervened, halting research, sealing off the area, and making it a restricted zone, which it remains.

Kincaid and Jordan were mysteriously disappeared, and the Smithsonian Museum denied any records of their existence or expeditions. This contradicted the local newspaper reports and local claims about the Smithsonian confiscating giant's skeleton found at the site.

In 2009, the Smithsonian dismissed the Arizona Gazette's article as make believe, but many believe the government is hiding something.

The area remains under restriction with no exploration allowed (as is the case with the majority of the Grand Canyon that requires permits to visit that are never granted, with debates and theories about the true nature of Kincaid's discovery continuing to this day.

In the Buddhist view, the "creator God" is Maha Brahma, but there are other divine (deva) creators in higher worlds. Of all these deities, there is no real "creator." How can that be? To the extent that these being make anything, they are creating. But what is it that Christians, Hindus, Muslims, Jews, and other polytheists who became monotheists believe give "God" His "creator" status.

It is the belief that God created souls (selves, egos, personalities with bodies of different kinds), this immortal (the part of us that does not die at death) thing we imagine ourselves to be. Those strands of being (processes of becoming) already existed to the extent they exist, which is utterly dependent on their constituents. "God" did not create that.

And though a God or god creates an entire world, world-system (cakkavala), or universe, it does not actually people it with new creations. Parents do not birth new beings into being, even though our materialistic science says they do. We, when making a terrarium, do not fabricate ants or other creatures to occupy it. They preexist and come in by invitation or otherwise.

They have no discernible beginning and will not come to an end by simply dying. So whether the Great (maha) Supremo (brahma) reappears at the beginning of another cycle (yuga) or not, all those who follow and subsequently reappear are not appearing for the first time due to this one being's magic, will, or wish.

This may be how it seems, but it is not how it is. It is unclear if Hinduism understands this any better than the Abrahamic faiths, but it is perfectly clear in the Buddha's rejection of an ultimate "creator" or "creation." It is the same spinning cycle that originates depending on impersonal conditions (which are taken to be very personal), the Five Aggregates clung to as "self." What are they? They are:

• forms (bodies, material bases, whether subtle or gross);
• feelings
• perceptions
• formations
• consciousness(es).

Don't eat your fellow earthlings. Go vegan.

All five are constituent processes, not independent things. And while it may not make sense to say "forms" when we customarily say form, this body (like all our previous and future bodies) is not one unitary, independent thing. It is utterly dependent on the Four Elements (the four qualities of materiality, which themselves are constituent processes, not actual, tangible, elemental "things" like the way we imagine atoms or particles to be).

What does Julia Roberts know that we don't?

Similarly, "consciousness" is NOT one thing. It is not a thing at all but rather an impersonal process taken as personal. There is not one consciousness, but rather there are many mind moments (cittas) and submoments (phases of a moment) in a stream, taken to be one stream as if any stream or river were one thing rather than trillions of ever-moving water molecules passing in and sublimating out of what is regarded as one stream/river.

All of these things are ponderable; moreover, they are discernible and potentially directly visible, not theoretical or something to debate. The Buddha taught them as a means of letting go for the gaining of freedom from all suffering and further rebirth (moksha, liberation, enlightenment, and nirvana). He also taught about Four Imponderables (catu-acintiyas). On the list of these four things, God is not one of them. God very much is ponderable, knowable, attainable. Mysterious to be sure but able to be revealed. So whom did or do the Hindus of Bali regard as the highest Hindu God, Guru Mohan?
