Nat'l Hispanic Heritage Month (9/15-10/15)

Maybe Sofia Vergara should speak for US Hispanics

Crystal Quintero, the Mexican Buddhist (WQ)
The growing Latinx (Latina and Latino combined) population, popularly referred to as Hispanic (descended from Spain) is too big to be contained in one month. So we take up two, the second half of September and the first half of October.

It might have been better to claim November with its mass celebration of el Dia de los Muertos or "the Day of the Dead," which is quickly becoming the new Cinco de Mayo, the American celebration of "Mexican Independence Day."

Of course, Independence Day actually falls not on the 5th of May (cinco de mayo) but on Sept. 16th (el Grito de Dolores, "Cry of Dolores," which being a place rather than a person called Dolores, should perhaps be rendered "Shout from Dolores," a word that literally means "pains" as in birth pangs) at the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month. What do most Americans want, fanatical popularity or technical accuracy?

If "we are what we eat," can I be Mexican by eating real Mexican food?

Plant-Based Mexican Recipes for Healing
More than a cookbook, Decolonize Your Diet restores what "traditional" Mexican food means by reaching back through centuries of history to reclaim heritage crops as a source of protection from modern diseases-of-development. It was compiled by partners, California professors, and co-authors Luz Calvo and Catriona Rueda Esquibel.

When Calvo was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, they both radically changed their diets and began seeking out recipes featuring indigenous, healthy, vegetarian Mexican foods.

Did Mossad bring Mexico under Jewish rule?
This led to the promotion of a diet rich in plants indigenous to the Americas (amaranth, maize, beans, squash, greens, herbs, and seeds) and a passionate idea that Latinxs in America, specifically Mexicans, need to ditch the colonial garbage, synthetic, artificial, and toxic fast food and return to their own culture's food roots for physical health and spiritual fulfillment.

This vegan and vegetarian cookbook features over 100 colorful recipes based on Mesoamerican cuisine and also includes contributions from indigenous cultures throughout the Americas. It is a winner of the International Latino Book Award for Best Cookbook. More

What's National Hispanic Heritage Month?
Presidenta Sheinbaum, deja me. I'll do the talking for the 65 million U.S. Hispanics, okay?

First flag of the Mexican Empire of Spain
Mes nacional de la herencia hispana
is observed annually from September 15 to October 15 in the United States of America ("America" being a big continent, much bigger than the powerfully hegemonic USA) for recognizing the contributions and influence of Hispanic culture to the nation's achievements, culture, and history [1, 2].

History
What have Mexicans ever done?
National Hispanic Heritage Week was established by legislation sponsored by Democratic Rep. George Brown Jr. of Los Angeles and signed into law by Democratic Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968 [3, 4, 5], taking place on the week including both September 15 and 16th [6].

In 1988, the commemorative week was expanded to a month (September 15 to October 15) by legislation sponsored by Rep. Esteban Torres (D–CA), amended by Sen. Paul Simon, and signed into law by Republican Pres. Ronald Reagan [3].

September 15th was chosen as the starting point for the commemoration because it is the anniversary of the Cry of Dolores (early morning, Sept. 16, 1810), which marked the start of the Mexican War of Independence.

The original Mexican flag (1821) had no snake
In 1821, this resulted in independence for the imperial New Spain Colony, which was actually a viceroyalty (known in the Native language, which has never been Spanish but rather Nahuatl and the Nahuan/Aztecan family of languages as Yankwik Kaxtillan Birreiyotl, but first called the "Kingdom of New Spain," now the United Mexican States or United States of Mexico, Estados Unidos Mexicanos, the Mesoamerican country's official name, and the Central American nations of Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Nicaragua), which became the Federal Republic of Central America.

The 30-day period also includes many dates of importance in the Hispanic (Spain-descended) community:
  • Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua celebrate their anniversary of independence on Sept. 15;
  • Mexico commemorates its independence on Sept. 16;
  • Chile commemorates its independence on Sept. 18;
  • the celebration day of reviled Jewish terrorist and Converso Cristobal Columbus (an Anus'i or Marrano), formerly known as Columbus Day now Día de la Raza [7]. More

LA’s World Naked Bike Ride 2026 (photos)

CENSORED: Naked cyclists strip through London for World Naked Bike Ride

A guide to LA’s World Naked Bike Ride 2026: Gear up, Los Angeles
Who needs bikes to celebrate the biological accomplishments of these Anunnaki-created bodies?
.
Is it shameful to see me naked?
For those brave enough to let it all hang out, get ready for the clothing-optional World Naked Bike Ride 2026 Los Angeles (WNBRLA).

The head-turning bike fest—a global grassroots movement that began in 2004—is taking over L.A. with its bare-as-you-dare dress code to fight “indecent exposure to cars.”

For those able to look past the nudity, nakedness, and eye-popping dangly bits, this 19th annual bike ride’s primary (stated) goal is to advocate for sustainable energy and environmentally responsible living to combat our current car-driven society. That and to bring joy back to transportation via cycling. (Think CicLAvia but with more butts).

I should have the right to go topless. What is this, Russia? I'll show that President Putin!
Femen: Female 'sextremists' for liberation from fascists 'n dictators like Trump 'n Putin
.
I'm thinking of riding, but I feel fat!
But make no mistake: The nudity is a major part of the ride and is in itself a celebration of body positivity, strength, respect and acceptance for every human being becoming better than ever looks wise.
  • When is the WNBR 2026 in LA? The ride takes place Saturday, June 27, 2026. There will be two rides, in fact, the first at 10:00 am and the second at 2:00 pm.
  • Where does the ride take place? For the safety of its riders, WNBR doesn’t share the exact details of its routes until the week before the event on Instagram and Facebook.
PHOTOS: Holy moly, all those paginas and venuses for the whole world to see!

.
Stay home or avert your gaze! They're au naturel!
But here’s what we can say: The staging area for both rides will be in the parking lot of the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) in Little Tokyo (140 Judge John Aiso St.), where there will also be body painters, food trucks and vendors.

In keeping with the event’s anti-car sentiment, organizers usually suggest leaving all cars behind—so wearing clothes to start and taking public transit is highly encouraged. But there will be parking for riders at the nearby Mangrove Parking Lot (414 E Temple St.) for $10, starting at 8:00 am.

Look for the “WNBR–LA General Parking” sign. Whether driving or cycling over, organizers ask that cyclist NOT undress until at the staging area.

I'm naked wearing body paint. I can shower off later. Hah, look at all these starved gawkers!

You sinful sinners, cover up! This is a beach!
The first ride starts at 10:00 am and is approximately 9 miles long—the longer of the two but is an easier route.

The second ride is at 2:00 pm and is about 7 miles long. This is the harder of the two rides, as the route goes over hills. Both go past DTLA landmarks and include photo ops and water stops.

Do I need to pre-register? All participants can register in person on the day of the event and get a debriefing on this year’s rules. Or pre-register by emailing wnbr.losangeles@gmail.com or via PayPal or Patreon).

Padded bike shorts, who needs'em? buns of steel
How much is it? As for the cost, the bike ride is technically FREE, but WNBRLA does welcome donations to help cover the cost of traffic escorts, porta potties, wristbands, loaner bikes, and more. (For those who donate at least $5, pick up a free backpack!)

Even if pre-registering, participants will need to check in on the day of the event to pick up a wristband.

I prefer skimpy. It's more tantalizing and alluring
How nude is “nude”? Do I have to strip to ride? We’re talking bare butts on bicycle seats and delicate bits flopping in the breeze, but the dress code is officially “bare as you dare.” Nudity isn’t technically required. So feel free to partake as fully clothed or as fully nude as you feel comfortable going. It's individual.

WNBRLA does encourage helmets and full-body SPF sunblock, as well as body paint and other creative expression—but strictly prohibits provocative fetish gear and genital jewelry and accessories. Also: no erections.

So how is this legal? Public nudity IS legal—sort of. Baring a nude body in a lewd manner that clearly has sexual or offensive intentions is illegal, however. Hence WNBRLA’s rules.

What if I don’t have a bike? In the past, WNBRLA has suggested DTLA Bikes or Just Ride L.A. for bike rentals. Or check out Time Out’s list of the best bike shops in L.A. to purchase one.

Participants can also skate, scooter, or ride a unicycle or tricycle—any human-powered vehicle—but keep in mind that the route will go both uphill and downhill. More

Anniversary of Los Angeles Uprisings ('Riots')

The 1992 Los Angeles uprisings, a reaction to LA Police Department abuses and racist criminal behavior under color of law that had gone on with impunity for as long as anyone could remember. That was 34 years ago, as of 2026.

Sublime, what happened?
(Wiki) Los Angeles, California, experienced a series of riots and civil disturbances during April and May of 1992 [5]. "Civil unrest" began after a distant jury acquitted four abusive police officers of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) charged with using excessive force in the wanton beating and arrest of Mr. Rodney King. The center of the trouble was in "South Central" Los Angeles (Watts) on April 29th, 1992. The shockingly racist police incident had been videotaped by Mr. George Holiday, who was a bystander witnessing the incident who had the presence of mind to begin filming, and was heavily reported on by news and media outlets. The purpose, meaning of life (Alan Watts)

There's a small Cat in a tall Hat, and that's that.
Discover Alan Watts' profound insight into the Western illusion of meaning and the freedom found in Eastern surrendering to life’s mystery. In this powerful lecture from his 1959 TV series Eastern Wisdom and Modern Life, Watts explains why our desperate "search" for purpose can often lead us AWAY from true peace.

What is shoshin or "beginner's mind"?
Embrace the present, let go of control, and understand why [the sense of] nonsense might just be the key to enlightenment.

In 1958, Watts toured parts of Europe with his father, meeting the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung and the German psychotherapist Karlfried Graf Dürckheim [29]. Upon returning to California and the Bay Area in the United States, Watts recorded two seasons of a TV series (1959–1960) for KQED public television in San Francisco, Eastern Wisdom and Modern Life [30]. How to reach Nirvana... (Beth Upton)

I've no advice, so Beth will explain.
Hello, friends! Perhaps it goes without saying, but I am going to say it anyway: I love our Sangha (Spiritual Community).

A few years back, if someone had told me that we’d have co-created such an engaged, enthusiastic, emotionally honest community of deeply dedicated practitioners, it would have been right on the edge of my wildest dreams. But here we are, doing it together.

When I step back and take it in, it astonishes me in the most beautiful way. Sangha can serve us in many ways as we navigate our Dhamma paths: It can be where we form wise friendships (kalyana-mittas), where we come for support, accountability, inspiration, and connection.

Dad, Delphine (VW), and Beth Upton
Then, sometimes, if we’re really lucky, we might receive one of those rare transformative moments of feeling truly seen, loved, supported, and accepted in our fullness. I had one of those rare and special moments recently, when I received this:

Watch me, or else... If the Dhamma is the love of my life, then Delphine [my VW van] is the second love. Here is a photo of me and my Dad with her a few days ago. On second thought, maybe I should have put my Dad ahead of my van on the list of things I love the most, but I’m sure he’ll understand.

Is there any way to speed up this process already?

So how do we attain Nirvana
(Pali Nibbana) when we’re stuck in second gear? The answer, for most of us, is that we don’t.

Perhaps a better question is why on earth would we want to do that? Why would we want to make the journey unnecessarily clunky, sluggish, and inefficient?

Sometimes we’re our own worst enemies (aren’t we?) holding on tightly to all things coarse and burdensome, willfully keeping ourselves stuck in second gear, all while reserving the right to complain when progress is slow.

I'll get this alone by brute force! (No you won't)
Sometimes we want the best of both worlds (don’t we?), the familiarity and comfort of life in second gear, as well as swift progress towards Nirvana. Unfortunately, that’s not possible.

Let me know in the comments: What’s keeping you stuck in second gear? Let’s get confessional.
  • Is it the late-night pretzels, like our dear friend Dan Harris?
  • Or rather is it the late-night binges of online content?
  • Is it a relationship that really needs to shift?
  • A responsibility you need to put down?
  • A bad habit you need to break?
Can a group go farther than an individual?
Let’s be wise friends to each other and harness the power of this wonderful Sangha to shift into a decisive third or even fourth gear over the weeks to come.

Lastly, a huge thanks to all who got back to me with ideas of things to write about.*

In the meantime, to support this work, do that here: SUPPORT.

With much metta and gratitude, Beth Upton
*I received way more inspiration than I can process right now. For those who didn’t get a reply from me, please know that I did read and take note of every single suggestion that was sent. It’s just that there are only so many hours per week that I am willing to spend on my laptop. I hope you’ll understand. I’ll be writing about those things and more over the weeks and months to come. Maybe the next newsletter will be the one with a button to book time with me).
