There really are underground worlds

Archeologists found 1,000 feet of tunnels hiding an entire underground world

In this story:
  • African Egyptians built more 25,000 years ago?
Research into ancient Austrian salt mines reveals an extensive Iron Age tunnel complex and evidence of mining from as long as 7,300 years ago.
  • Archeologists uncovered nearly 1,000 feet of mining tunnels through the mountains at Hallstatt.
  • Finds from within the mining chambers show history of the site and the evolution of tool usage.
  • VIDEO: Hidden world beneath city just discovered
(Popular Mechanics) Nearly 1,000 feet of ancient salt mining tunnels and chambers in the mountains near Hallstatt, Austria, have revealed a remarkably extensive mining history from the Iron Age. But the mountain’s history of salt mining goes back even further—7,300 years to be exact.

Ancient Turks made an underworld in Türkiye.
Archeologists have the ancient tools to prove it. As the Natural History Museum in Vienna continues to open a window into the salt mining history of the site, newly discovered mining chambers tell the story of how ancient inhabitants tracked salt deposits through the mountains, digging deeper with each hopeful find.

“These impressively demonstrate how salt mining has driven innovations in technology, organization, and transport since prehistoric times, playing a pivotal role in Hallstatt’s development into one of Europe’s oldest industrial centers,” the museum wrote in a statement.

“The exceptionally well-preserved finds from the salt mine provide valuable insights into the economic practices and lifestyles of past societies.”

Experts believe that when Neolithic inhabitants settled in the area above Hallstatt 7,300 years ago, they began mining salt almost immediately. Salt production hit an all-time high around 1200 B.C.E. [before the common era], in the late Bronze Age, with daily totals soaring to 1.5 tons of salt extracted from the mountain.
It’s the extensiveness of the mining chambers and the clues left behind inside them that help illuminate that history. Archaeologists discovered not just a single massive mining cavern, but a series of tunnels and chambers, some running in parallel directly over and under others, progressively dipping deeper into the mountain.

Geological drilling helped reveal additional tunnels that were previously unknown. According to a report by Austria Press Agency (APA) published by Salzburger Nachrichten, experts say the chambers reached widths up to 80 feet and heights of 65 feet.

.
The chambers traced salt deposits, showing how ancient miners chased the [edible rock and] valuable mineral deep into the mountains. Throughout the centuries, intense landslides caused major disruptions in salt production. “But mining went on and on,” Daniel Brandner, head of underground excavations from the museum’s prehistoric department, told APA.

“It was a very resilient community that provided salt again in a few years after these landslides.” Excavating the chamber floors—where mining debris and sediment have accumulated into a layer nearly 30 feet thick in places—turned up broken tools hafted in several different ways.

Iron Age mining implements are typically standardized and purpose-built, so the variety suggests that uniformity gave way to experimentation as the period went on. The site’s Neolithic beginnings are documented separately, by antler and stone picks recovered elsewhere in the mountain.

Some underworlds below us built themselves
Additional artifacts include burnt pine splinters, clothing fragments, wooden bowls with food residue, and even human waste.

The very salt mined in the mountains helped preserve the artifacts. With a bounty of finds peppering the 1,000 feet of chambers, archaeologists hope to continue searching the mountain for additional evidence of chambers in the mining network while analyzing the finds to create a better picture of prehistoric and ancient mining near Hallstatt.

LA’s World Naked Bike Ride 2026 (photos)

CENSORED: Naked cyclists strip through London for World Naked Bike Ride

A guide to LA’s World Naked Bike Ride 2026: Gear up, Los Angeles
Who needs bikes to celebrate the biological accomplishments of these Anunnaki-created bodies?
.
Is it shameful to see me naked?
For those brave enough to let it all hang out, get ready for the clothing-optional World Naked Bike Ride 2026 Los Angeles (WNBRLA).

The head-turning bike fest—a global grassroots movement that began in 2004—is taking over L.A. with its bare-as-you-dare dress code to fight “indecent exposure to cars.”

For those able to look past the nudity, nakedness, and eye-popping dangly bits, this 19th annual bike ride’s primary (stated) goal is to advocate for sustainable energy and environmentally responsible living to combat our current car-driven society. That and to bring joy back to transportation via cycling. (Think CicLAvia but with more butts).

I should have the right to go topless. What is this, Russia? I'll show that President Putin!

.
I'm thinking of riding, but I feel fat!
But make no mistake: The nudity is a major part of the ride and is in itself a celebration of body positivity, strength, respect and acceptance for every human being becoming better than ever looks wise.
  • When is the WNBR 2026 in LA? The ride takes place Saturday, June 27, 2026. There will be two rides, in fact, the first at 10:00 am and the second at 2:00 pm.
  • Where does the ride take place? For the safety of its riders, WNBR doesn’t share the exact details of its routes until the week before the event on Instagram and Facebook.
PHOTOS: Holy moly, all those paginas and venuses for the whole world to see!

.
Stay home or avert your gaze! They're au naturel!
But here’s what we can say: The staging area for both rides will be in the parking lot of the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) in Little Tokyo (140 Judge John Aiso St.), where there will also be body painters, food trucks and vendors.

In keeping with the event’s anti-car sentiment, organizers usually suggest leaving all cars behind—so wearing clothes to start and taking public transit is highly encouraged. But there will be parking for riders at the nearby Mangrove Parking Lot (414 E Temple St.) for $10, starting at 8:00 am.

Look for the “WNBR–LA General Parking” sign. Whether driving or cycling over, organizers ask that cyclist NOT undress until at the staging area.

I'm naked wearing body paint. I can shower off later. Hah, look at all these starved gawkers!

You sinful sinners, cover up! This is a beach!
The first ride starts at 10:00 am and is approximately 9 miles long—the longer of the two but is an easier route.

The second ride is at 2:00 pm and is about 7 miles long. This is the harder of the two rides, as the route goes over hills. Both go past DTLA landmarks and include photo ops and water stops.

Do I need to pre-register? All participants can register in person on the day of the event and get a debriefing on this year’s rules. Or pre-register by emailing wnbr.losangeles@gmail.com or via PayPal or Patreon).

Padded bike shorts, who needs'em? buns of steel
How much is it? As for the cost, the bike ride is technically FREE, but WNBRLA does welcome donations to help cover the cost of traffic escorts, porta potties, wristbands, loaner bikes, and more. (For those who donate at least $5, pick up a free backpack!)

Even if pre-registering, participants will need to check in on the day of the event to pick up a wristband.

I prefer skimpy. It's more tantalizing and alluring
How nude is “nude”? Do I have to strip to ride? We’re talking bare butts on bicycle seats and delicate bits flopping in the breeze, but the dress code is officially “bare as you dare.” Nudity isn’t technically required. So feel free to partake as fully clothed or as fully nude as you feel comfortable going. It's individual.

WNBRLA does encourage helmets and full-body SPF sunblock, as well as body paint and other creative expression—but strictly prohibits provocative fetish gear and genital jewelry and accessories. Also: no erections.

So how is this legal? Public nudity IS legal—sort of. Baring a nude body in a lewd manner that clearly has sexual or offensive intentions is illegal, however. Hence WNBRLA’s rules.

What if I don’t have a bike? In the past, WNBRLA has suggested DTLA Bikes or Just Ride L.A. for bike rentals. Or check out Time Out’s list of the best bike shops in L.A. to purchase one.

Participants can also skate, scooter, or ride a unicycle or tricycle—any human-powered vehicle—but keep in mind that the route will go both uphill and downhill. More

Secrets of Mexican DNA uncovered

The dark secrets of Mexican DNA uncovered
Casta: Spain's caste system
(Ancestry Code) June 22, 2025: Underneath the surface of modern Mexico (officially called the United Mexican States) lies a tangled legacy of Indigenous ancestry, Spanish (Iberian European) conquest, and a brutal caste (casta) system designed to divide and control based on racial superiority with pure peninsular Spanish at the top. This video uncovers the shocking genetic and social consequences of colonization, from the erasure of native bloodlines to the invention of racial categories that still echo today.

Entering the World's Largest Cave

The world's largest cave: It has a forest, a river, and clouds inside
(Ruhi Çenet) Vietnam's Son Doong is the largest [known] cave in our planet. To learn more about Son Doong or to visit Son Doong, check out Oxalis's website: oxalisadventure.com.

This cave is so massive that it has a completely self-sustaining ecosystem with its own climate conditions. Hundreds of meters underground, clouds like the ones we're used to seeing in the sky form inside this enclosed cave. Son Doong even has an untouched prehistoric rainforest hidden far below the surface and a vast underground river.

Flora and fauna
From transparent fish to colorful monkeys, over 250 endemic [found nowhere else but here] plant and animal species live in this underground world. Seven new animal species were recently discovered here and are unique to this place.

Stretching 5.6 miles (9 kilometers) in length, this cave encloses 38.5 million cubic meters of space. Its passages are so enormous that a 40-story skyscraper could fit inside. Its giant stalagmites rise like towers from ancient cities. Walking inside, it’s impossible not to feel as small as a tiny bug.

Son Doong even contains phytokarst rocks, which move towards the sun like semi-living organisms. Rare cave pearls and many other unique formations are also found here. For 3 million years since its formation, the world had no idea about this cave's existence until it was fully explored in 2009 in Vietnam. Now, it’s time for you to see the largest cave on earth. Individual access is forbidden to protect both visitors and the fragile environment. This expedition is operated by Oxalis, the only authorized agency.
