Tara? Rainbow light of Yeshe Tsogal, Tibet

(Buddha's Wisdom)

Rainbow light body
Vajrayogini
Yeshe Tsogyal
(circa 757 or 777–817 CE) [1] is also known as "Victorious Ocean of Knowledge," "Knowledge Lake Empress" (Wylie ye shes mtsho rgyal, ཡེ་ཤེས་མཚོ་རྒྱལ) or by her Sanskrit name Jñānasāgarā "Knowledge Ocean," or by her clan name "Lady Kharchen" [2].

She attained enlightenment in her lifetime and is considered the Mother of Tibetan Buddhism. Yeshe Tsogyal is the highest woman in the Nyingma Vajrayana lineage.

Some sources say she, as princess of Kharchen, was either a co-wife or consort of Emperor Tri Songdetsen (Trisong Detsen) of Tibet [3] when she began studying Buddhism with Padmasambhava, who became her main karmamudrā consort.

  • Samantabhadri
    EMANATIONS
: Yeshe Tsogyal is considered a manifestation of the Bodhisattva Tara. She is also considered an emanation of Prajnaparamita, Samantabhadrī, and Vajrayogini [16]. In the Life of Yeshe Tsogyel, Padmasambhava predicted that Yeshe Tsogyel would be reborn as Machig Labdrön; her consort Atsara Sale [2] would become Topabhadra, Machig’s husband; her assistant and another of Padmasambhava’s consorts, Tashi Khyidren, would be reborn as Machig’s only daughter, and so on. All of the important figures in Yeshe Tsogyel’s life were to be reborn in the life of Machig Labdron, including Padmasambhava himself, who would become Dampa Sangye [17].

Padmasambhava
Padmasambhava is a founder-figure of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism and is considered a second "buddha" of our era [4] [which at least one other tradition, sticking to the original texts, would say is impossible, given that the historical Buddha often pointed out how rare the arising of a buddha is and how few there have ever been, with only one in any epoch.]

She is known to have revealed terma ("hidden treasure") with Padmasambhava and was also the main scribe for these terma. Later, Yeshe Tsogyal hid many of Padmasambhava's terma on her own, under the instructions of Padmasambhava for future generations [2].

Emperor Trisong Detsen
Born a princess
in the region of Kharchen, Tibet, in about 777 CE, she fled from arranged marriages until captured for Emperor Tri Songdetsen.

Yeshe Tsogyal lived for approximately 99 years and is a preeminent figure in the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism and a role model for contemporary spiritual practitioners.

Although often referred to as being Padamasambhava's main "consort," Yeshe Tsogyal was primarily a spiritual master and teacher in her own right.

Prajnaparamita with Devotees
Based on her spiritual accomplishments, the Nyingma and Karma Kagyu schools of Tibetan Buddhism recognize Yeshe Tsogyal as a female buddha.

The translators of Lady of the Lotus-Born, the namtar or spiritual biography that Yeshe Tsogyal left as a terma/hidden treasure, observe:

"As Dodrup Tenpai Nyima makes clear, beings able to reveal Termas must have at least the realization of the Perfection Stage practices. On the other hand, the one who originates the Treasures must have the supreme attainment of Buddhahood. Lady of the Lotus-Born is thus a testimony of Yeshe Tsogyal's enlightenment" [5]. More

Happy Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah)

BimBam, 9/1/17; Sheldon S., CC Liu, Ashley Wells, Crystal Q. (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Does the Non-State of Israel (not bound by a codified constitution) give Jews a bad name?
Pope, not good to yell at Rabbi. - Dolly, let me handle this. I'm CEO of their king's corporation.
.
What is Rosh Hashanah? The Jewish New Year
Author Emily Sigalow
(BimBam) Here's a basic primer explaining what the high holiday Rosh Hashanah is, for everyone. It explains what it's about, how different communities celebrate it, what the special foods and traditions are, and the spiritual connection.
  • Q&A: Hey, Sheldon, what's a mitzvah (as in Bar Mitzvah)? It's following a commandment or duty in obedience to the God/tradition.
  • American JewBu
Can a person really be a JuBu (JewBu)? YES, one sure can (at least according to Emily Sigalow, author of American JewBu: Jews, Buddhists, and Religious Change.
  • Is Adam Sandler really a Jew, or does he just like outing other Jews? After Woody Allen, he's the Jewy Jewisson of Hollywood, judging by his last movie where nepotism seems to have gotten his co-stars their roles (being related to him).
  • Sheldon, why are so many Jews into Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism? Because Jesus (Issa, Y'Shua, Joshua, Son of Zeus, or Akhenaten) who was born as a Jew was a tulku, recognized by Tibetan lamas, emissaries from Lhasa, who came to remind him, and we call them the "Three Wise Men." So reminded, Jesus/Issa traveled with a Jewish merchant's caravan, according to German Holger Kersten, to Kashmir and Ladakh in ancient Himalayan India and Tibet. There he studied Buddhism at Hemis Monastery, according to Russian Nicolas Notovitch, Indian Swami Abhedananda, Alice Dunbar Nelson, American Christian Elizabeth Clare Prophet (Montana cult leader and visionary who wrote The Lost Years of Jesus: Documentary Evidence of Jesus' 17-Year Journey to the East), and Muslim Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (Jesus in India) became well known in Buddhism and Hinduism as Saint Issa (Isa in Islam, along with his famous mother Miriam, who is mentioned more often in the Quran/Koran than she is in the New Testament and Jesus is mentioned by name more than Mohammed is, but they say so because the Vatican/Catholic Church secretly wrote that relatively new Abrahamic religion's holy book), returned to Israel with what he learned, the got in big trouble with the Romans and ran back to India, where he lived to the age of 80 (just like the Buddha) and is buried, Jewish style, in Kashmir, India, in tomb marked by his footprints (Buddhist style) but over-buried by a Muslim figure. And lots of Jews practice Zen, and the most famous and spiritually successful practice Vipassana (in the Theravada tradition), plus think of all the early Jews interested in Mahayana.
  • Wikipedia adds that absurdist author Christopher Moore, in his 2002 comedic fantasy novel Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal, parodies the notion that between the ages of 15 and 30, Jesus traveled to Tibet to study Buddhism in a monastery (after first having traveled to [Buddhist] Afghanistan), then to India to study Hinduism [actually Vedic Brahmanism, because "Hinduism" had not yet been systematized into a religion like we have today, which came with Sri Sankhara circa 750 CE].
  • He's an absurdist comedian, Sheldon, so how is that additional evidence? There's much truth in humor, as absurd as it may seem to us when we first learn it.
  • Are you secretly a Christian? No, I'm a Buddhist and, therefore, a happy nontheist like other Wisdom Quarterly contributors.

Many Jews practice Buddhism
It's an introduction for Jews and Gentiles alike. There have never been many Jews in the United States, always numbering less than one million, but one would never know, owing to their outsized influence. There may be a curious coworker or family member wondering what Jewish holy-days (holidays) are about and why there are so many of them. Who's got time to look into it? Pagan and Post-Pagan (i.e., early Christian) Europe used to be full of holy days, too, but industrialization seems to have cut those right out of the calendar in the name of productivity.

Why do so many Jews and Christians want war?

Woman arrested for Buddha tattoo

Plumber arrested for... (Hartsfield/BAN)
A British woman learned the hard way that it's not a good idea to visit Sri Lanka if you have a visible Buddha tattoo. Tourist Naomi Michelle Coleman, 37, was arrested after arriving from India at Sri Lanka's main international airport yesterday; she was taken before a judge, who ordered her to be deported. The tattoo, on her right arm, shows the Buddha sitting on a lotus flower, AFP reports. Sri Lanka has a Buddhist majority, and a police spokesperson says she was detained for "hurting others' religious feelings," The Independent notes. She's expected to be deported within days; the same thing happened to a male tourist last year. More

Tourists, please refrain from kissing the Buddha
Here a French tourist goes at it with a revered icon in Sri Lanka. Note to self, show some sense. As Westerners, we “mean well.” That doesn’t mean we aren’t being horrifically disrespectful. This is the equivalent of dry humping Madonna and Child at the museum. It will get you fined and possibly jailed and deported. The Buddha might be cool with it but Buddhists will not be (TheBabarazzi.com). It is considered very wrong to take a selfie with a Buddha, so take a photo of a Buddha and leave it at that.

What does "Om mani padme hum" mean?

Yes, but what does it mean?
    Buddha on cash (Omoo/gansv1846/flickr)
Mantras (sacred incantations) may be interpreted by practitioners in many ways, or even as mere sequences of sound whose effects lie beyond strict linguistic meaning.

In this, the second most famous Buddhist mantra behind the selfless climax of the Heart Sutra literature (Gate gate paragate parasamgate bodhi swaha), we must question our common sense literal interpretation. Dr. Donald S. Lopez, professor of Buddhist and Tibetan Studies at the University of Michigan, in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, points out a more sensible explanation.

Om is the cosmic sound in Sanskrit
The middle part of the mantra, maṇipadme, is commonly interpreted as "jewel in the lotus," Sanskrit maṇí ("jewel, gem, cintamani") and the locative of padma "lotus"). But according to the distinguished professor, it is much more likely that maṇipadme is in fact a vocative, not a locative, addressing a bodhisattva called Maṇipadma, "Jewel-Lotus," which is an alternate epithet of the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara

It is preceded by the syllable oṃ (aum, shown at right) and followed by the syllable hūṃ. These are both interjections without direct linguistic meaning. This lack of direct meaning is easy to understand when one considers corresponding Judeo-Christian exclamations used in and around prayer, praise, and worship such as "amen" (a Western corruption of the East's aum), "Hallelujah," "So be it!" "So may it be!" It's not that they have no meaning or serve no function; it is that that meaning and function is indirect and open.

In this case, one opens and places oneself in a proper frame of mind/heart with the cosmic sound oṃ then seals the utterance with another syllable (hum, the sacred sound corresponding to the throat chakra). Many mantras, such as the epitome of the Heart Sutra, end in svaha ("all hail").

Om mani padme hum: mantra of Avalokiteshvara Tibetan script (Christopher J. Fynn)

    31 Planes (sayalaysusila.net)
Another suggested translation runs: Om purifies bliss and pride (realm of the gods); ma purifies jealousy and the need for entertainment (characteristic of the asura loka, the realm of the jealous angels/godlings); ni purifies passion and desire (characteristic of the human realm); pad purifies ignorance and prejudice (characteristic of the animal realm); me purifies greed and possessiveness (characteristic of the realm of the hungry ghosts); hum purifies aggression and hatred (hell realm).

Prof. Lopez also notes that the majority of Tibetan Buddhist texts have regarded the translation of the mantra as secondary, focusing instead on the correspondence of the six syllables of the mantra to various other groupings of six [such as the Six Realms, which are the first six planes of existence, categorized as the Sensual Realm in the three realms within the Buddhist cosmology of 31 Planes of Existence] in Buddhist tradition (Lopez, p.130).

For example, in the Chenrezig Sadhana, Tsangsar Tulku Rinpoche expands upon the mantra's meaning, taking its six syllables to represent the purification of the six realms of existence... More

After a two-year, $45-million makeover, Echo Park Lake will reopen [today] to the public Saturday morning with a ceremony that will include [our Mexican Jewish everyman] Mayor-elect Eric Garcetti.

The festivities are scheduled from 10 a.m. until noon. The park is located in the 1700 block of Park Avenue.

The lake was completely drained and cleaned before being refilled and restocked with plants. A clay liner was installed to reduce water leakage through the lake bottom.

    Rehabilitation plan (facebook.com)
The 29-acre lake was originally built in the 1860s as a reservoir for drinking water. But over the years the lake became polluted and was identified by the state in 2006 as an impaired body of water.

Today, the lake and surrounding park have been fully rehabilitated, with lake, landscaping, and wetland improvements. The lake serves primarily as a detention basin for the city’s storm drain system, while also providing recreational benefits and wildlife habitat. More

    The Blooming Lotus
Andrew Olendzki, translator (Udayin Thera, Thag 15.2)
    Lotus-blooming buddhahood (buzzle.com)
This poem by the Elder (Thera) Udayin evokes one of the most famous of Buddhist images and is laced with meaning on many levels. In one sense -- emerging from the psychological ethos of early Buddhist teaching -- it can be taken to describe the ability of the awakened person to thrive in the world of sensory experience without clinging [to it] or [being overwhelmed by] attachment. Though the human condition is rooted in the desires that give rise to all life and [the delusion of] selfhood, one can learn to live in this world without being bound by the impulse to crave pleasure and avoid pain. One gets "drenched by the world" when one succumbs to to the range of grasping behaviors which inevitably bring about suffering -- the mind clings to an object like water that permeates something and drenches it. Here we see a Buddha who does not transcend the world, but lives in it for forty-five years with a mind free of all attachments. More

As the flower of a lotus,
    Arisen in water, blossoms,
    Pure-scented and pleasing the mind,
Yet is not drenched by the water,

In the same way, born in the world,
    The Buddha abides in the world;
And like the lotus by water,
He does not get drenched by the world.

Nam Myoho Renge Kyo - The Lotus Sutra is Buddha's most referred to teaching on
"emptiness" and "not-self" (shunyata and anatta), the central concept necessary for
enlightenment. It is an experience and not something that can be fully taught. More

    JuBu (Jewish-Buddhist) "Devotion" (video)

Kugel the Cougar (The Cougel Chronicles); Wisdom Quarterly; Dani Shapiro.com

"If Elizabeth Gilbert's Eat, Pray, Love was about the fantasy of a spiritual journey, Dani Shapiro's Devotion is about the reality.

"Gilbert leaves her life to travel purposefully throughout the world, along the way checking gourmet cooking, enlightenment, and romance off her life list" (Columbus Dispatch).

Cougel the Jewish cougar (The Cougel Chronicles) was recently reading Dani Shapiro’s memoir.

"A friend recommended I read it because Dani’s story and voice reminded her of me (what a compliment). In her book, Dani charts her search for meaning (while leading a seemingly rich life) and how she finds it in her reinterpretation of religion -- a hybrid of Judaism and Buddhism (Buddish? Jewdist?) Dani grew up in an observant household, as I did, and after taking a detour away, like I did, she found her way back, unlike me. Not yet anyway." More

Going for Guidance to the Three Gems

Wisdom Quarterly edit of "Three Jewels" (en.wikipedia.org)
Buddhist nuns, monks, and lay followers all go for guidance to the Three Jewels.

The Three Jewels, also the Triple Gem, is the center of one of the major practices of mindfulness, recollection, contemplation, and reflection in Buddhism. The qualities of the three are frequently repeated in the ancient texts, where they are called the "Mirror of the Dhamma" (Dhamma Adassa). I go for guidance to the Buddha, the Greatest in the world, the Guru of devas and human beings, who gained enlightenment to teach freedom from suffering to beings. The Cambodian (Khmer) formulation, in Theravada Buddhist tradition, runs as follows.

Guiding the right Middle Path, the way that can eliminate all suffering.
Such teachings now beings have through karmic-destiny accrued in the past by trying to listen, learn, and practice for happiness.
There is no happiness as genuine as one free of all suffering from this world and beyond, where happiness prevails because of Dharma.
I go for guidance to the Dharma and the Sangha, all combined as the Three Jewels, the cool shade of the world.
May the Triple Gem guide [this country and its people] to happiness forever.

    The Mirror of the Dharma
This contemplative practice (anussati) -- often replacing formal sitting meditation -- refers to reflecting on the true qualities of the teacher, teaching, and the taught -- the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha.

These qualities are called the "Mirror of the Dharma" in the Discourse on the Buddha's Last Days. They help practitioners attain a "mind like a mirror" -- a possible reference to the "mind-door" (mind-door cognitive processes) near the physical heart that reflect the contents of consciousness.

In the commentary on the Crossing the Wilderness Rebirth-Tale, the Buddha declares:

Disciples, nowhere between the lowest of the hells below or the highest heavens above, nowhere in all the countless worlds that stretch to the right and left is there the equal, much less one superior, to a buddha. Incalculable is the excellence that springs from keeping the precepts and from other virtuous conduct.
By taking refuge in the Triple Gem, one escapes from rebirth in unfortunate states of suffering. By forsaking such guidance as this, one hase certainly erred. In the past, too, humans who foolishly mistook what was no guide for a true guide met with disaster.

    Amaravati Three Gems (triratna) symbols

    The Buddha
"The Blessed One is an arhat, perfectly enlightened, accomplished in true knowledge and conduct, fortunate, knower of the world, unsurpassed leader of persons to be tamed, teacher of devas and humans, the Enlightened One, the Blessed One."

In early traditions the Buddha as a worthy guide is taken to refer to the historical Buddha. Later traditions expanded this to include buddhahood or "the full development of mind." In other words, the full development of one's highest potential came to mean our intrinsic buddha nature or ability to reach buddhahood, full enlightenment.

This later interpretation recognizes the possibility of completion, perfection, full development of one's own inherent qualities. Mind in Buddhism does not mean the head; it means the heart. They are one and the same, both involved in consciousness. So the metaphorical head/heart allows for the full development of wisdom and compassion in equal measure.

    The Dharma
"The Dharma is well expounded by the Blessed One, directly visible, immediate [timeless], inviting one to come and see, applicable, to be personally experienced by the wise."

Going for guidance to the Dharma, in the Vajrayana tradition, includes reference not only to the words of the Buddha, but to the living experience of realization and the teachings of fully realized practitioners.

In Tibetan Buddhism, it includes both the Kangyur (the teaching of the Buddha) and the Tengyur (the commentaries written by realized practitioners). In an intangible way, it may also include the living "transmission" of those masters, which can be very inspiring.

    The Sangha
"The Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples is practicing the good way, practicing the straight way, practicing the true way, practicing the proper way; that is, the four pairs of persons, the eight types of individuals: This Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples is worthy of gifts [a statement which makes it certain that we are not talking about just anyone with a shaved head wearing a saffron robe but instead those ], worthy of hospitality, worthy of offerings, worthy of reverential salutation, the unsurpassed field of merit for the world." (Bhikkhu Bodhi, 2000, The Collected Discourses of the Buddha: A New Translation of the Samyutta Nikaya, Somerville: Wisdom Publications, p. 319–321).

A more liberal definition of "Sangha" may include all practitioners actively following the Buddha's teachings to benefit themselves and others. But it is more strictly defined as the "Realized Sangha" (Arya-Sangha). In other words, it really means those practitioners and historical students of the Buddha who realized the true nature of mind.

The ordinary Sangha means practitioners and students of the Buddha who are using the same methods and working towards the goal of enlightenment and benefiting others by making the Dharma known that brings about the end of suffering (here and now and in the ultimate sense of their own attainment).

    Tibetan Buddhism

    Threejewels.svg

In Tibetan Buddhism there are three guidance formulations: the Outer, Inner, and Secret forms of the Three Jewels.

The outer form is the "Triple Gem" (Sanskrit, Triratna). The inner is the Three Roots. And the secret form is the "Three Bodies" (trikaya of a buddha). These alternative guide formulations are employed by those undertaking Deity Yoga and other tantric practices in the Vajrayana tradition as a means of recognizing Buddha Nature.

    History

The Three Gems are so called because of their treasured value to Buddhists, as well as their indestructible and unchanging nature.

The Three Gems when used in the process of going for guidance become the Three Guides. In this form, metaphors occur very frequently in ancient Pali texts (of Theravada Buddhism). Sangha always really means those persons (ordained or not) who have reached at least the first stage of enlightenment, which is very hard to know about others. So for practical purposes most use the term to refer to the Sangha of Buddhist monks and Buddhist nuns.

I go to the Buddha for guidance and to the Dharma and to the Sangha.
