What's special about human life? (Blind Turtle)

SUTRA: The hole in the ring
Who would ever become a Buddhist monastic?
"Meditators, suppose that this great earth were completely covered with water and a person were to toss a ring with a single hole onto the surface.

"A wind from the east would send it west, a wind from the west would send it east, a wind from the north would send it south, and a wind from the south would send it north.

"Moreover, suppose there were a blind turtle that surfaced only once every 100 years.

"Now, what do you think? How likely is it that that blind turtle, coming to the surface only once every 100 years, would ever stick its head through that ring?"

"It would be very improbable, venerable sir! It would only be by chance that a blind turtle, coming to the surface only once every 100 years, would stick its head through that ring [being tossed around by wind]."

"Likewise, meditators, it is very improbable, mere chance that [at any given time] one obtains a human rebirth.

"Likewise, it is very improbable, mere chance that a Tathagata [a fully enlightened teaching buddha], worthy and rightly self-awakened, ever arises in the world.

"Likewise, it is very improbable, mere chance that a Doctrine and Discipline [Dhamma-Vinaya] expounded by a Tathagata appears in the world.

"But now this human rebirth has been obtained. A Tathagata, worthy and rightly self-awakened, has arisen in the world. A Doctrine and Discipline expounded by a Tathagata has appeared in the world.

"Therefore, take as [an extraordinarily rare and] sacred duty to contemplating [these four enlightening/liberating truths]:
  1. 'This is [the meaning of] suffering...
  2. This is the origin of suffering...
  3. This is the end of suffering.'
  4. Undertake the duty of contemplating: 'This is the path-of-practice that leads to the end of suffering.'"
In retrospect, the historical Buddha might have said:
  1. This is pleasure (sukha)...
  2. This the origin of pleasure...
  3. This is the end of pleasure (dukkha)...
  4. This is the path-of-practice that leads to more and more pleasure [until one reaches the ultimate and unsurpassable bliss of nirvana.]
  • Why didn't he? It must have occurred to him. One very likely reason is that this is not the path of hedonism (pleasure-seeking as the ultimate good). Making an end of
1. What is "suffering" and could we talk about pleasure instead?
.
What is dukkha (disappointment, distress, unsatisfactoriness)? There is no need for confusion about dukkha or displeasure with translating it as "suffering." It is the nature of Pali and Sanskrit that a term has a RANGE of meaning, from agitation to agony.

All of these are dukkha, which could be rendered "off-kilter," like the wheel of an ox-cart that is off center and making for a bumpy and unpleasant ride. The Buddha defines exactly what he means by the word: "Not getting what one wants, getting what one doesn't want, being separated from or losing what one loves, being joined with what one detests." In short, the Five Aggregates clung to as self (the khandha or skandha) are disappointing, painful, unable to ever fulfill, and are thus unsatisfactory and suffering.

(Wiki) According to Monier Monier-Williams, the actual roots of the Pali term dukkha appear to be Sanskrit दुस्- (dus-, "bad") + स्था (sthā, "to stand") [9, Note 2]. Irregular changes in the development of Sanskrit into the various Prakrits [ancient hybrid languages] led to a shift from dus-sthā to duḥkha to dukkha.

Western Theravada Buddhist monk Analayo
Western scholar-monk Ven. Analayo concurs, stating that dukkha as derived from duḥ-sthā, "standing badly," conveys nuances of "uneasiness" or of being "uncomfortable" [16].

Silk Road philologist Christopher I. Beckwith elaborates on this derivation [17]. According to him: "...although the sense of duḥkha in Normative Buddhism is traditionally given as 'suffering,' that and similar interpretations are highly unlikely for Early Buddhism.

"Significantly, Monier-Williams himself doubts the usual explanation of duḥkha and presents an alternative one immediately after it, namely: duḥ-stha "'standing badly,' unsteady, disquieted (literally and figuratively); uneasy," and so on.

"This form is also attested, and makes much better sense as the opposite of the Rig Veda sense of sukha, which Monier-Williams gives in full [11, Note 3].

Translation
The literal meaning of duḥkha, as used in a general sense, is "suffering" or "painful" [Note 4]. Its exact translation depends on the context [Note 5].

Contemporary translators of Buddhist texts use a variety of English words to convey the [many] aspects of dukh.

Early Western translators of Buddhist texts (before the 1970s) typically translated the Pali term dukkha as "suffering." Later translators have emphasized that "suffering" is a too [harsh and too] limited translation for the term duḥkha and have preferred to either leave the term untranslated [15] or to clarify that translation with terms such as
  • anxiety,
  • distress,
  • frustration,
  • unease,
  • unsatisfactoriness,
  • not [getting] having what one wants,
  • having what one does not want, and so on [19, 20, 21, Note 6].
In the sequence "[re]birth is dukkha," it may be translated as "painful" [22].

The opposite of pleasure
But I want what I want when I want it!!!
When related to vedana ("sensation" or "feeling") dukkha ("unpleasant," "painful") is the opposite of sukha ("pleasure," "pleasant"), yet all feelings are dukkha [unsatisfactory, disappointing] in that they are impermanent, conditioned [impersonal] phenomena, which are unsatisfactory, incapable of providing lasting satisfaction or actual enduring fulfillment.

The term "unsatisfactoriness" then is often used to emphasize the unsatisfactoriness of "life under the influence of afflictions and polluted karma" [23, 24, 25, 26, 27, a], but it would equally well -- though much less obviously -- apply to sukha.

All pleasure ultimately fails to fulfill, satisfy, make us happy exactly because the nature of ALL conditioned (dependently originated or co-arisen) phenomena is beset by what the Buddha described as three universal characteristics or the Three Marks of All Conditioned Existence (ti-lakkhana) and transient states.

Early Buddhism
Dukkha is one of the three marks of existence -- namely anicca ("impermanent"), dukkha ("unsatisfactory"), anatta ("impersonal," "not-self," "empty," devoid of an enduring essence) [Note 7].

Various Pali canon sutras (discourses) sum up how cognitive processes result in an aversion to unpleasant things and experiences (dukkha), forming a corrupted process together with the complementary process of craving and clinging to pleasure (sukha).

What does dukkha mean?
This is expressed as saṃsāra, an ongoing process of [re-]death and rebirth [Note 8], but also more pointedly and non-metaphysically in the process-formula of the Five Aggregates clung to as self (skandhas):
  1. [Re-] birth is dukkha (disappointing),
  2. aging is dukkha,
  3. deteriorating is dukkha,
  4. illness is dukkha,
  5. death is dukkha;
  6. sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair are dukkha;
  7. association with what we don't like is dukkha;
  8. separation from the liked is duḥkha;
  9. not getting what is wanted is dukkha.
  10. In summary, the Five Aggregates clung to as self (khandhas) are dukkha. More

Happy b-day, Fernando's ghost
Mexican pitching marvel Fernando Valenzuela comes through for the Dodgers again. Although his contribution this year was posthumous, it is his birthday and it is the Day of the Dead, and something unseen pushed Yoshinobu Yamamoto to greatest tonight. It has to seem supernatural to overcome the odds and win the biggest game of his life. There may be trouble in celebratory Los Angeles, still reeling from Halloween Carnival in West Hollywood tonight, Samhain trick-or-treaters going all night, and the seasonal festivities of Christian-Pagan syncretism.
MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto
Yoshinobu Yamamoto
(山本 由伸, born 1998) is a Japanese professional baseball pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball (MLB).

He previously played in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) for the Orix Buffaloes, where he became one of the most decorated pitchers in league history.

Between 2021 and 2023, Yamamoto won three consecutive Pacific League Most Valuable Player Awards, three Eiji Sawamura Awards, and three Triple Crowns, leading the league in wins, strikeouts, and earned run average in each of those seasons.

Shohei Ohtani is having fun, and that's gotta hurt.
He also threw two no-hitters and was a key figure in Orix’s 2022 Japan Series championship.

Following the 2023 season, Yamamoto was posted to MLB and signed a 12-year, $325 million contract with the Dodgers—the largest ever for a pitcher at the time.

In his rookie MLB season, he contributed to Los Angeles’ 2024 World Series title, becoming the first player in baseball history to win a World Series, an Olympic gold medal, and a World Baseball Classic title.

In 2025, Yamamoto was named to his first All-Star game. Internationally, he has represented Japan in multiple tournaments, earning gold medals at the 2019 WBSC Premier12, the 2020 Summer Olympics, and the 2023 World Baseball Classic. More

Miracle: Holy Fire (Jesus' spirit) appears

Jesus' spirit (Holy Fire) appears in Jerusalem
(Blakwoodz) April 17, 2025:Today, let's look at 🌟 The Holy Fire ("Holy Light") in Jerusalem – an annual Easter miracle at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Palestine. 🌟 Hey, Doubting Thomas, you can't walk on water (if you disbelieve).

Welcome to full coverage of The Holy Fire 2025, the annual miracle that takes place on Holy Saturday at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

  • LA Marzulli talks about the "miracle" and how the local doubting Muslims, those who follow Islam, tried to debunk it and became converts.
This sacred event, known as the Holy Fire miracle, draws thousands of faithful from around the world each Easter to witness this awe-inspiring tradition. 🔥

The Holy Fire is one of the most ancient and spiritual Easter traditions celebrated in Jerusalem. Every year, during Orthodox Easter and Holy Saturday, the miracle of the Holy Fire takes place in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, believed to be the site of the resurrection.

In this video, witness the moment the Holy Fire (alleged to be the "spirit of Jesus" except for Jews who call it the Holy Spirit in Judaism) appears like a dove (Holy Spirit, Holy Breath, Pneuma, Prana, Holy Ghost), the powerful reactions of the crowd of believers, and the deep meaning imputed on this sacred tradition.

Burning Bush but more European
Join us as we explore the historical significance, religious symbolism, and modern-day celebration of this unique Easter event. We will also discuss more about all the biblical prophecy and The Third Temple of Solomon being built by Israel.

📍 Location: Jerusalem, Israel (Occupied Palestine) ⛪ Site: Church of the Holy Sepulchre 📆 Event: Holy Fire 2025, Orthodox Easter, Holy Saturday.

See the buildup to the Holy Fire ceremony, the exact moment the "Holy Fire" appears, Orthodox Christian pilgrims lighting candles and singing hymns, the atmosphere inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the way Easter (borrowed from the ancient pagans) is celebrated elsewhere.

Burning Bush that doesn't burn up
[Let's explore the history, the miracle, and the cultural impact of this Holy Light – a "fire" that does not burn (like that Burning Bush Egyptian Jewish Moses, if he ever existed, saw in that psychedelic/entheogenic vision that one time), that connects millions of believers during Orthodox Easter in the heart of the Holy Land taken over by Ashkenazi Jews for their war on Palestinians, God and Bible based genocide on human beings, and the start of a new US-sponsored empire in the Middle East ruled by secular Jews from Europe and their proxies.]

Biblical prophecy, space aliens, UFO sightings, ghosts, creepy TikToks, and scary videos, The Woodz Show has got it all.

Burma's Golden Rock Pagoda defies gravity

What kind of miracle hair could explain this?

The marvel of Golden Rock's survival

Entrance to the site protected by lion creatures
Kyaiktiyo Pagoda (Burmese ကျိုက်ထီးရိုးဘုရာ) also known as Golden Rock [1]) is a well-known Buddhist pilgrimage site in Mon State, Burma (Myanmar).

The rock and its pagoda sit at the top of Mt. Kyaiktiyo.
  • Why is Burma called Myanmar now? The military dictators decided to restore the original name the British could not pronounce (\mee-yan-maa\), which is actually the same as Burma, but it signifies acknowledgement of the illegitimate authoritarian government that took the country by force and savagely repressed the Saffron Revolution and the once-beloved Aung San Suu Kyi, the legitimate heir to power and leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD).
  • Buddhism in Burma or Myanmar (Theravada)
Covered in more gold leaf
It is a small pagoda of 24 feet (7.3 m) built on top of a giant granite boulder covered with real gold leaf pasted on by male devotees.

According to legend, the rock itself is precariously perched on a strand of the historical Buddha's hair [1]. The balancing rock is apparently defying gravity, as it perpetually appears to be on the verge of sliding off and rolling down the hill.

Another legend claims that a Theravada Buddhist monk impressed a celestial king (deva raja) with his asceticism and the celestial king used his supernatural powers to carry the rock to its current position, specifically choosing the rock for its resemblance to the monk's head.

It is the third most important Theravada Buddhist pilgrimage site in Burma after Shwedagon ("Great Golden" Pagoda (of Dagon) in Rangoon (Yangon) and Mahamuni  ("Great Sage") Pagoda [2, 3, 4, 5].

Etymology
In the local Mon language, the word kyaik (ကျာ်) means "pagoda" and yo (ယဵု) means "to carry on the hermit's head." The word ithi (ဣသိ in Mon from the Pali ရိသိ, risi, Sanskrit rishi or "seer") means spiritual "hermit." Thus, Kyaik-htiyo means "pagoda upon a hermit's head" [6, 7].

Legend
The marvel has been going on for long time
The legend associated with the pagoda is that the historical Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama or Shakyamuni), on one of his many visits to the area in ancient times, gave a strand of his hair to Taik Tha, a hermit. The hermit, who tucked it in the tuft of his hair for safety, in turn gave the strand to the king with the wish that the hair be enshrined in a boulder shaped like the hermit's head.

The king had inherited supernatural powers from his father, Zawgyi (a proficient alchemist or more likely a weizza or "wizard"), and his mother, a naga (reptilian) dragon princess. They found the rock at the bottom of the sea, where nagas generally are said to dwell. With the help of the Thagyamin, the king of Tawadeintha (Pali Tavatimsa or the "Space World of the Thirty-Three"), a sensual heaven in Buddhist cosmology, found the perfect place at Kyaiktiyo to locate the golden rock and build a pagoda. There the strand was enshrined.
  • This accords with the ancient legend found in Buddhist texts of the Buddha offering some strands of his hair to traveling businessmen from what is now Burma as a token when they requested it after he impressed them with his spiritual outlook and noble demeanor, which became the basis for the massive construction of Shwedagon Pagoda, one of the most impressive Buddhist sites in the world, said to have been built around the original stupa or "burial mound" reliquary for the hair.
Theravada monks gather at the pagoda
It is this holy (magical) strand of hair that, according to legend, prevents the rock from sliding off and tumbling down the hill.

The boat used to transport the rock turned into a stone. This is also honored by Buddhist pilgrims at a location about 980 feet (300 m) from the Golden Rock.

The place is known as the Kyaukthanban Pagoda or stupa (lit. "stone boat stupa") [2, 7, 8]. Legends also mention that Buddhists undertaking the sacred pilgrimage by trekking from the Kinpun Base Camp three times consecutively in a year are blessed with wealth and recognition [9].

Geography
Miracle Golden Rock, 2007
The pagoda is located near Kyaikto in Mon State in the northern part of the Tenasserim coast. Golden Rock is situated at an elevation of 3,609 feet (1,100 m) above sea level, on top of the Kyaiktiyo Hill (also known as Kelasa Hills or Eastern Yoma Mountains); it is on the Paung-laung ridge of the Eastern Yoma Mountains. It is 130 miles (210 km) from Rangoon (Yangon) and 460 feet (140 m) north of Mawlamyine, the capital of Mon State [10, 11]. More

Catholic RELIC tour, LA, SGV (3/17)

Over the years, the legend is enhanced to make magnificent Eurocentric art unlike reality.
.
What happened?
The Holy Face of Jesus relic presentation and veneration and mass, Saint Therese Catholic Church

This seems to be the original.
It's a miracle. It's a miracle how anyone holds onto faith in Catholicism in the face of insults like this, a "third-class relic," by the church's own description, "a replica of the cloth Veronica wiped Jesus’ face with" that "has been touched to Veronica's Veil, the True Wood of the Cross, and the Lance," oy vey. By this rationale, the original could fall on the floor (be touched to) and thereby bless the whole earth, ushering in world peace, blind faith, and worldwide allegiance to Rome and the Vatican. Has the Church tried that? If they did, it hasn't worked. Blessed are the meek, for they [shall believe and] inherit the earth. What they'll do with it only the God knows. When is the Rapture again? All we can think of is Alanis Morissette and her Catholic sentiments: "We all needed something to cling to, so we did. We all had delusions in our heads. We all had our minds made up for us. We had to believe in something, so we did."

Pretty art: St. Veronica with Holy Kerchief (painted by Mattia Preti, 1650)

A kerchief is a "head handkerchief."
*Christian Carnival Barker Voice* Get out of the bars, boys and girls, and into Catholic church to see the Holy Kerchief, the Vernicle (Sudarium or "Sweat Cloth"), Veil of Veronica or simply Veronica, the "Face of Jesus" relic.

Yes, just this one time, it may never come round to your neck of the woods again! You were wowed by the Holy Hand of St. Judas last year in Pasadena, but did you know the Creator's own son, drenched in blood, sweat, and tears while being whipped and beaten at the sixth Station of the Cross, had a kindness shown to him?

Veronica holding face of Jesus on her veil after wiping him

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, St. Veronica was kind enough to use her hanky on the lord, and with no time to emanate an entire life-size photocopy like he would with the Shroud of Turin, he left a headshot.

NOTE: While it may sound as if Wisdom Quarterly is mocking the idea of relics, sacred objects, particular religions, or those invested in their faith, a closer examination reveals that what is being mocked and made fun of is commercialization, corruption, and greed in the name of religion. This is what Mr. Show is aiming at, as well as taking on conservatives in government, Christianity, and hypocrisy in general. It is our confirmed belief that some objects are holy, sacred, divine, supernatural, extraordinary and miraculous. This may or may not be them, but such things exist. The Buddhist tradition, which preceded Christianity by six centuries, spoke of relics (sariras).*
  • Put down the pints of St. Paddy's Day Guiness and join us as we go out to see them on tour just as we went out to see various stops of the worldwide Relic Tour by Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhists years ago in LA. Wisdom Quarterly will be at each stop as part of our ongoing "Adventures in Church" series.
  • ALL religions are beautiful. They may not be true, but they are all beautiful.
  • Those who wish to be spiritual should not let commercialized religion stand in the way.
It may look like a splotch, but with
FAITH, it becomes a holy face.
Think about it. You loved the Blood Moon, a mere sideshow, you loved snow in LA's mountain tops in spring, you think fire, rain, and chilling cold are spectacles, but how about the authentic miraculous face of the creator-savior incarnate?

Yes, leggys and germs, this is gonna be a really big shoe. This may be your only opportunity to stand up close to a real relic (as recognized in both Catholic and Orthodox traditions, though Protestant not so much).

Hieronimus Bosch painted these hideous nutters, including Veronica's Veil in lower left.

Is there any information?
Don't get your hopes up, huh?
Fortunately, St. Therese Catholic Church has something to say about this event in advance so parishioners might choose a St. Pat's party instead: "This year, being the 100th anniversary of the canonization of St. Therese,* we are having a special visit of a Holy Face relic on MONDAY, MARCH 17, FROM 6:00 TO 10:00 P.M.

"This third-class relic is a replica of the cloth Veronica wiped Jesus’ face with and has been touched to Veronica's Veil, the True Wood of the Cross, and the Lance that pierced Christ's side.

Since this image was touched to the instruments of Our Lord's Passion, which were drenched in His Blood, it has therefore been touched to the Blood of Christ. And so is considered a “Living Image of Jesus Christ.”

She was first given the name “Therese of the Child Jesus” when she entered, and she added “and the Holy Face” when she took the veil.) The evening will begin with a talk at 6:00 p.m., by Vicki Schreiner, author of Chronology of the Holy Face Devotion, followed by Mass at 7:15 p.m., and then veneration of the Holy Face relic until 10:00 p.m." Source: Church bulletin, sttheresechurchalhambra.org).

    Atheist/Agnostic point of view

Mr. Show exposes hypocrisy, ripping it a new hole
Once upon a time in the Valley of Los Angeles, California, HBO gave Bob Odenkirk and David Cross the money to develop a comedy sketch show for cable TV: Mr. Show with Bob and David. They ran with it and filmed one of the funniest and smartest shows (right up there with Amy Sedaris' Strangers with Candy) ever created for basic cable. It has only gotten funnier with time, having introduced the world to many actors who went on to stellar comedy careers like Sarah Silverman, Jack Black, and that shy bald guy. In this 30-minute episode entitled "What to Think" (S1E02), they brilliantly satire the U.S. government's censorship attempts, the hypocrisy of the Christian church (at least the televangelist wing of it), and greedy transnational corporations, while cussing a lot.

*Relics (sarira) are real in Buddhism

Śarīra is a generic term referring to Buddhist relics, although in common usage it usually refers to pearl or crystal-like bead-shaped objects [which Wisdom Quarterly has determined to most likely be silica] that are found among the cremated ashes of the Buddha, chief disciples, and other Buddhist spiritual masters (aka "noble ones," the Aryans).

Relics of the Buddha after cremation are termed dhātu ("elements") in the Mahaparinibbana Sutta [1]. Śarīra are held to emanate or incite "blessings" and "grace" (Sanskrit adhiṣṭhāna) within the mindstream and experience of those connected to them [2].
    • Mind here refers to streams of cittas ("mind-moments")
Sarira are also believed to ward off evil in the Himalayan Vajrayana Buddhist tradition.

The Buddha, beloved figure of Thailand, SE Asia

    Terminology
Cremation pyre relics of Shakyamuni Buddha
Śarīra (pronounced /ɕɐɽiːɽɐh/) means "body" in Sanskrit. When used in Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit texts to mean "relics," it is always used in the plural: śarīrāḥ.

The term ringsel is a loanword from the Tibetan རིང་བསྲེལ (ring bsrel). Both of these terms are ambiguous in English; they are generally used as synonyms, although according to some interpretations, ringsels are a subset of śarīras.

    Śarīra can refer to:
    • Dharmakāya śarīra, which are sutras as told by the Buddha. According to Ding Fubao's Dictionary of Buddhist Terms, a "Dharma body" śarīra is "the Sutra as told by the Buddha: That which is unchanging in what is told by the Buddha, is of the same property as the essence of the Buddha himself, hence it is called the 'dharma body śarīra.'"
    • Remains of the Buddha or other spiritual masters, either cremated remains or other pieces, including a finger bone or a preserved body, similar to the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox incorruptibles.
    • Broken-body śarīras refers specifically to cremated remains. When used without qualification, it generally refers to the pearl-like remnant of a master left after cremation.
    Pearl-like śarīras
Mass market holy Buddhist relic container
Although the term śarīra can be used to refer to a wide variety of Buddhist relics, as listed above, it is generally used to refer to pearl or crystal-like bead-shaped objects that are purportedly found among the cremated ashes of Buddhist spiritual masters.

These objects are considered relics of significant importance in many sects of Buddhism since they are believed to embody the spiritual knowledge, teachings, realizations, or living essence of spiritual masters.

    If expecting this, disappointment awaits
They are taken as evidence of the masters' enlightenment and spiritual purity. Some believe that śarīras are deliberately left by the consciousness of a master for veneration, and that the beauty of the śarīras depends on how well the masters had cultivated their mind and morals.

Śarīra come in a variety of colors, and some are even translucent. Sariras are typically displayed in a glass bowl inside small gold urns or stupas (burial mound reliquaries) as well as enshrined inside the master's statue.

Śarīras are also believed to mysteriously multiply while inside their containers if they have been stored under favorable conditions.

Saffron threads are sometimes placed within or around the bowl containing individual śarīra as an offering. More
