Science: No ‘simple' answer to define 'woman'

Biological "sex" is not simple, and psychological "gender" is even more messy, more ambiguous, more fluid and up for debate. One influences the other as they interact and play upon attraction and orientation. They result from past karma but are influenced by present karma. Biology is not destiny, but its effects are so profound as to make it seem so. Add something to the water (like xenoestrogenic compounds) and no one should be surprised that feelings stop matching with expectations and biases. The fluid becomes more fluid. But there is still male and female not only at the level of the cell but at the level of particles ("atoms") according to Buddhist physics Consider the freakshow called House.


Sex, gender, and orientation
Wisdom Quarterly is working on a "simple" answer to define "woman." It is more fundamental than biology's chromosomes because sex is set somewhere more deeply than molecules in the human body yet still within the physical. There are, of course, psychological components. However, these are fluid and flexible, changing and socially constructed. They are no basis for making a distinction between males and females. If a distinction is to be made, might we found it on something more stable and unchanging than ambiguous factors? Might its foundation be set at birth (conception) rather than post-partum? Looking at Buddhist physics (yes, there is such a thing in the Abhidhamma), we think the answer is yes. This will not settle the social upheaval now in motion because, whatever a "woman" is, what "womanhood" or "femininity" mean is left to human construction. For example, are women "naturally" (innately, by nature) killers or nurturers? While the answer may seem obvious, it is actually open to interpretation because, when a momma bear is protecting its cubs, it becomes a killing machine to any threat it perceives. Does that killing make it less female? (See "The Female of the Species"). When a man stereotypically goes off to work every morning in a previous version of Western society, is it less nurturing than a female staying at home to do that direct care? Is he less of a male for providing support? Psychology and physiology, mind and body, function and form, use and equipment, ideas and tools, humans are very adaptable. We interpret, we define, we make labels, and we do it based on something. Is it mutable? It is. No, but it can be based on an absolute or largely unchanging consideration. What could that be? That will be revealed in the next installment of this debate.

What is a "woman"? Or rather, what defines someone as a "woman"?

Ask 100 women, and you might get 100 different answers. [Ask your Uncle Bob and you're likely to get just one.]

This is because there are a variety of contexts in which one could define a woman, and within each of these contexts, there will still not be one straight answer but lots of bent ones.

Socially or biologically, there is much variation. This is the problem Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson ran into in her Supreme Court Confirmation hearing. Senator Marsha Blackburn asked her to define the word "woman."
  • [Buddhism has an answer, a simple answer, and modern people may not like it. There is a book of Buddhist physics and psychology known as the Abhidhamma, and the definitions it contains are clear cut. What it means to be a "woman" may well be a social construct, but it is not arbitrary. At the moment of birth, we become one or the other. This is a biological fact, a binary, at the particle level beyond what science seems to currently be aware of. This does not mean that there is nothing else to be; there is another category for everything else (or two other categories condensed into one, the female P and the male P, which would include hermaphrodites, eunuchs, pansexuals, asexuals, intersexuals, pansexuals, transsexuals, homosexuals, bisexuals, crossdressers, and other "two spirit" individuals of all descriptions). This catchall term, P (pandaka), has long been regarded as a third gender, though it has often been dismissed as anyone engaging in any non-normative sexual behavior or with regard to physical anomalies and ambiguities of how one presents -- genotype vs. phenotype -- and certainly of how someone feels in terms of assigned sex, gender role, sexual orientation, and other similar social factors.

    THE UNBELIEVABLE PART: However one feels, dysphoric or euphoric, biological "sex" is imprinted at the minute level of the kalāpa ("particle," "corporeal unit," "produced corporeality"). Not only is it there in a physical individual, but it can also be seen and confirmed by those who develop the ability to see it. What it means, indeed, that is a social construct. For example, "We are Vikings, and Viking men do not cry! If one cries, it is not a man, so kill it, imprison it, marry it, rape it, impale it with a horn helmet, or raise it up, call it 'shaman-queen,' and obey it. That's the rule." Then later in time, with the exact same DNA on the exact same beach: "We are Swedes, and men do cry but it makes other men around them uncomfortable. So if one cries, it is a man, but call it 'crybaby,' 'sissy,' 'wuss,' 'metro,' 'dergooberfarfignewtonpandacoot,' promote it to a position in Human Resources, and leave him be with no romantic date to the big Lutefisk Festival, but he can bring his mother." End of example. This becomes problematic because although it is an objective binary, it is perceived subjectively. Individuals can see it, but unlike showing genes or alleles on a DNA test, it is not yet possible to show what such minute particles look like to others. Strangely, it is not immutable. An individual, wandering on through rebirths, changes sex -- and neither gender nor sex are certain, fixed, and permanent. If that were not hard enough to accept, it gets stranger. There is at least one case of a human who changes from one sex to the other and back. This is a miraculous and extraordinarily rare occurrence, but that it can occurs cautions us not to make hard and fast distinctions about the meaning of our natural sex, assigned sex, sex roles, and genders. Obviously, this is a controversial issue. To make any comment sounds as if Buddhism is dictating sex assignment. Buddhism is not doing that. Karma (the fruition of our former deeds) is doing that. But karma is complex and also accounts for gender (the social construct or set of gendered expectations about an individual, and this gets very messy and complex, particularly how it was understood by scholars in ancient times. There is something more remarkable than the strange occurrence of a sex change during one human life, and that is the power of transformation, which is far more common. Devas possess this power, as do many other categories of beings in Buddhist cosmology, and even some humans develop this power. So what is the power? It is the power to shapeshift, to adopt a sex or appearance as one wishes. Consider what it does not mean: Although one wills to temporarily adopt the form or physical appearance of something else, it is still done while being one thing or the other and not both. A male may temporarily adopt the form of a functional female, and a female the form of a functional male -- assuming that person possesses this special power or knowledge (abhinna, siddhi), but it will not stick. For example, a reptilian (naga) creature may shapeshift and appear as a human male or female but when not sustaining that determination will revert back to its usual form and appearance. One may argue if this is an "illusion" (maya), as it is sometimes described, because such a creature really does temporarily take the physical form of what it wills. Shapeshifters exist. The argument would be that if one is bound to revert to the original form, is the temporary manifestation as something else not therefore a temporary illusion? It becomes a matter of semantics. Yes, it is an illusion because one will rebound and revert, though one wills not to, to what one was originally. No, it is not an illusion because, for the time being, one really has metamorphosed into the form one willed. This power is very rare among humans. It otherwise seems quite common among other beings. Even animals can camouflage. Ghosts shapeshift, as do demons and ghouls (d'jinn, yakshas, rakshasas, maras, asuras), reptilians (nagas), trolls, goblins (kumbhandas), and light beings (devas).]
Jackson's response was rather controversial and has sparked a debate on how to define a woman.
  • [The future justice became a defiant moron (or very cunning and manipulative, politically correct speaker) at that moment, unable to make any sensible statement about a definition other than the equivalent of it could be anything.]

Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson's Supreme Court confirmation hearing was a long, grueling affair. It lasted more than 13 hours and was full of extremely tough and at times harsh questions. One of the toughest, however, was when Senator Marsha Blackburn asked the judge to define the word "woman."

"Well how the F am I supposed to know?" one wishes she would have answered. Instead, she said: "Not in this context, I'm not a biologist," Judge Jackson responded. "In my work as a judge, what I do is I address disputes. If there's a dispute about a definition, people make arguments, and I look at the law, and I decide."

Sen. Blackburn was not at all impressed with this answer. She chastised Jackson immediately: “the fact that you can't give me a straight answer about something as fundamental as what a woman is underscores the dangers of the kind of progressive education that we are hearing about.” Sen. Blackburn stated in the hearing.

Readers may be wondering why Jackson's answer and why learning how a potential Supreme Court judge defines a "woman" is so important. It is because, as a Supreme Court judge, Jackson will most definitely preside over cases involving trans rights and gender politics.

Many scientists, biologists, and gender law scholars have commended Jackson for her response. They agree that her response might be slightly misleading, but still it wasn't a bad one. This is because while they agree that science and biology could help create a definition for the word, it can't create a conclusive answer, either.

There are billions of women on the planet. Each woman is unique and different, both in a social context and a biological one. Most scientists agree that there is too much variation to be able to clearly, scientifically, define what is a woman (1).

Rebecca Jordan-Young is a scientists and gender studies scholar. In her work, she explores the relationship between science and the social side of gender and sexuality. She says that while biology is a part of what makes a woman a woman and a man a man, it cannot offer a complete definition.

“I don’t want to see this question punted to biology as if science can offer a simple, definitive answer,” she said.

“The rest of her answer was more interesting and important. She said ‘as a judge, what I do is I address disputes. If there’s a dispute about a definition, people make arguments, and I look at the law, and I decide.’ In other words, she said context matters – which is true in both biology and society. I think that’s a pretty good answer for a judge.”
Not a simple question
After the hearing, Blackburn tweeted that her question to define the word "woman" was a simple one. She said that the fact that Jackson couldn't answer it was a major red flag. Many scientists, however, say that it's true: It really is not a simple question.

The answer is not as binary as we once used to say. It used to be, "If you are born with a penis, you are a boy and identify as one. If you are born with a vagina, you are a woman and identify as one." As gender experts point out, however, it is much more complex than that.

In terms of biology, there are at least six different markers for "sex." This includes genitals, gonads, chromosomes, internal reproductive organs, hormones, and their levels, and secondary sex characteristics.

These markers don't always align, however, and aren't necessarily opposite or completely different. Therefore, according to biologists, it is nearly impossible to define a woman based on biology alone.

While there are biological markers that exist for sex, we can't completely hinge the definition of male or female in science. In the terms of the law and the judicial system, each case involving this debate needs to take into account both the biological and the social context of the debate.

“As is so often the case, science cannot settle what are really social questions,” said Sarah Richardson, a Harvard scholar, historian, and philosopher of biology who focuses on the sciences of sex and gender and their policy dimensions.

“In any particular case of sex categorization, whether in law or in science, it is necessary to build a definition of sex particular to context.”

Gender studies Professor Kate Mason says that in many cases, judges have to recognize that gender [unlike sex] is not a binary thing. It is fluid. Many people will have their own idea of what gender, or a gender, is, and with what and how they identify.

“I do think that judges and justices sometimes have to make determinations about who is meant by ‘man’ or ‘woman’ in written statutes – and they may have to acknowledge the reality that sex and gender are not binary,” Mason said. “I think Blackburn would prefer a world in which reality was much simpler.”

SUTRA: The Factors of Absorption

Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One (the Buddha) was staying at Savatthi, Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's monastery.

There he addressed the practicing wandering ascetics: "Meditators, I will teach the five factors of noble (enlightened) right absorption. Listen, pay close attention, and I will speak."

"As you say, venerable sir," they replied.

"Now what, meditators, are the five factors of noble right absorption? A meditator — withdrawn from sensuality, withdrawn from unskillful things — enters and abides in the first absorption with rapture and bliss (supersensual pleasure) born of withdrawal, accompanied by applied and sustained attention.

"One suffuses and saturates, soaks and fills the body with rapture and bliss born of withdrawal. There is no part of the body that remains unpervaded by rapture and bliss born of withdrawal.

"It is just as if a skilled bath attendant or apprentice were to pour bath powder into a basin and knead it, sprinkling it with water so that a ball — moistened and saturated through and through — would not drip but be soaked. Even so, a meditator suffuses, saturates, and fills the body with rapture and bliss born of withdrawal. No part of the body remains unpervaded by rapture and bliss born of withdrawal.

"This is the first development of the five factors of noble right absorption.

"Furthermore, with the stilling of applied and sustained attention, one enters and abides in the second absorption born of rapture and bliss born of stillness (coherence, composure, consolidation of mind and mental factors), unification of consciousness free of applied and sustained attention with internal assurance.

"One suffuses and saturates, soaks and fills the body with rapture and bliss born of coherence. There is no part of the body that remains unpervaded by rapture and bliss born of coherence.

"It is just as if a lake were filled with spring water welling up from inside, without inflow from the east, west, north, or south, with skies periodically supplying abundant rain so that a cool fount of water would well up from inside the lake, suffuse and saturate, soak and fill it with cool water, there being no part of the lake that would remain unpervaded by cool water. Even so, a meditator suffuses and saturates, soaks and fills the body with rapture and bliss born of coherence. There is no part of the body that remains unpervaded by rapture and bliss born of coherence.

"This is the second development of the five factors of noble right absorption.
"Furthermore, with the fading of rapture, one remains equanimous, mindful, and alert, experiencing supersensual pleasure in the body. One enters and abides in the third absorption of which the noble ones (ariya) declare:

"'Equanimous and mindful, one enjoys a pleasant abiding.' One suffuses and saturates, soaks and fills the body with pleasure free of rapture so that no part of the body remains unpervaded by pleasure free of rapture.

"It is just as if in a blue lotus pond, or a white or red one, there might be some blue, white, or red lotuses that, born and growing in water, remain immersed in water and flourish without rising above the water so that they are suffused and saturated, soaked and filled with cool water from the roots to the petals, and no part of those blue, white, or red lotuses remain unpervaded by cool water. Even so, a meditator suffuses and saturates, soaks and fills the body with pleasure free of rapture. There is no part of this body that remains unpervaded by pleasure free of rapture.

"This is the third development of the five factors of noble right absorption.

"Furthermore, with the abandoning of pleasure and pain — as with the earlier disappearance of elation and distress — one enters and abides in the fourth absorption born of purity of equanimity and mindfulness, no more experiencing pleasure or pain. One sits, pervading the body with pure, bright light (of consciousness) so that there is no part of the body that remains unpervaded by pure, bright light.

"It is just as if a person were sitting wrapped from head to toe with a white cloth so that there were no part of the body to which the white cloth did not extend. Even so, a meditator sits, pervading the body with pure, bright light. There is no part of the body that remains unpervaded by pure, bright light.

"This is the fourth development of the five factors of noble right absorption.

"Furthermore, a meditator reflects on the subject of [one-pointed] attention, well-attended to, well-considered, well-penetrated by means of wisdom.

"It is just as if a person were to reflect on another person, or a standing person were to reflect on a sitting one, or a sitting person were to reflect on one lying down. Even so, meditators, a meditator reflects well, attends well, ponders well, penetrates well by means of wisdom.

"This is the fifth development of the five factors of noble right absorption.

"When a meditator has developed and pursued these five factors of noble right absorption in this way, then whichever of the six higher knowledges one turns one's mind to penetrate and realize, one can witness them whenever there is an opening.

"Suppose there were a water jar set on a stand, brimming with water so that even a crow could easily drink from it. If a strong person were to tip it [in any way at all], would water spill from it?"

"Yes, venerable sir."

"In the same way, when a meditator has developed and pursued the five factors of noble right absorption in this way, then whichever of the six higher knowledges one turns one's mind to penetrate and realize, one can witness them whenever there is an opening.

"Suppose there were a rectangular water tank — enclosed and set on level ground — brimming with water so that even a crow could easily drink from it. If a strong person were to loosen the enclosure anywhere at all, would water spill from it?"

"Yes, venerable sir."

"In the same way, when a meditator has developed and pursued the five factors of noble right absorption in this way, then whichever of the six higher knowledges one turns one's mind to penetrate and realize, one can witness them whenever there is an opening.

"Suppose there were a chariot on level ground at four crossroads, harnessed to thoroughbred steeds, waiting with whips lying at the ready so that a skilled driver, a trainer of horses able to be tamed, might mount and — taking the reins in one hand and the whip in the other — drive out and back, to whatever place and by whichever road. In the same way, when a meditator has developed and pursued the five factors of noble right absorption in this way, then whichever of the six higher knowledges one turns one's mind to penetrate and realize, one can witness them whenever there is an opening.

"If one wants, one wields manifold supernormal powers.
  • Having been one, one becomes many.
  • Having been many, one becomes one again.
  • One appears.
  • One disappears.
  • One goes unimpeded through walls, ramparts, and mountains as if through space.
  • One dives in and out of the earth as if it were water.
  • One walks on water without sinking as if it were dry land.
  • Sitting crosslegged one flies through the air like a winged bird.
  • With one's own hand one touches and strokes even the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful.
  • One wields influence with this body even as far as the brahma worlds.
  • One can witness this whenever there is an opening.
"If one wants, one hears — by means of the divine ear-element, which is purified and surpasses the human — both kinds of sound, divine and human, near or far. One can witness this whenever there is an opening.

"If one wants, one knows the mind (heart) of other beings, other individuals, having encompassed mind with mind. One knows a mind with passion as a mind with passion, a mind free of passion as a mind free of passion. One knows a mind with aversion as a mind with aversion, a mind free of aversion as a mind free of aversion. One knows a mind with delusion as a mind with delusion, a mind free of delusion as a mind free of delusion. One knows a contracted mind as a contracted mind, a scattered mind as a scattered mind. One knows an expanded mind as an expanded mind, an unexpanded mind as an unexpanded mind. One knows an excelled mind [one not yet at the most excellent level] as an excelled mind, an unexcelled mind as an unexcelled mind. One knows a still (concentrated) mind as a still mind, a distracted mind as a distracted mind. One knows a released mind as a released mind, an unreleased mind as an unreleased mind. One can witness this whenever there is an opening.

"If one wants, one recollects manifold past lives [existences, previous abodes], that is, one birth, two births, three births, four, five, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 100, 1,000, 100,000, many aeons of galactic/cosmic contraction, many aeons of galactic/cosmic expansion, many aeons of contraction and expansion, [recollecting]:

"'There I had such a name, belonged to such a clan, had such an appearance. Such was my food, such my experience of pleasure and pain, such the end of my life. Passing away from that state, I rearose there. There, too, I had such a name, belonged to such a clan, had such an appearance. Such was my food, such my experience of pleasure and pain, such the end of my life. Passing away from that state, I rearose here.' Thus, one remembers manifold past lives in general and in detail. One can witness this whenever there is an opening.

"If one wants, one sees — by means of the divine eye that is purified and surpasses the human — other beings passing away and reappearing and knows how they are inferior and superior, beautiful and ugly, fortunate and unfortunate in accordance with their deeds (karma):

"'These beings of unskillful conduct of body, speech, and mind, who reviled the noble ones, held wrong views, and undertook actions under the influence of wrong views — with the breakup of the body, after death — have reappeared in an unfortunate plane of deprivation, the downfall, in lower realms, even in a hell.

"These other beings of skillful conduct of body, speech, and mind, who abstained from reviling the noble ones, who held right views and undertook actions under the influence of right views — with the breakup of the body, after death, have reappeared in fortunate destinations, even in a heavenly world.' 

"Thus, by means of the divine eye that is purified and surpasses the human, one sees beings passing away and reappearing [dying and being reborn] and knows how they are inferior and superior, beautiful and ugly, fortunate and unfortunate in accordance with their deeds. One can witness this whenever there is an opening.

"If one wants, by putting an end to the mental defilements (taints, corruptions, cankers, effluents), one remains in that defilement-free knowing-and-seeing, having known and made them manifest here and now. One can witness this whenever there is an opening."

That is what the Blessed One said. Gratified, the wandering ascetics delighted in the Blessed One's words.

Magic: supernatural powers are real (video)

Real magical powers? No way! Ever wonder if people with super powers (magicians, angels, spirits) are real? Here they are caught on tape.

There are beings who walk among us, no ordinary beings. They look human, but can they be if they possess supernatural powers (called iddhi in Buddhism). They walk around like average Josephines. We might not notice them.

That is, we probably wouldn't recognize them -- unless we were looking very closely or video recording. Then they might appear.

They seem like human-hybrids, humanoid aliens, reptilians or Nordics (dragons or fairies), oddballs, weirdos, humble wizards, time travelers, futuristic holograms, powered androids, hot models, or just plain Joes wearing hoodies. Maybe the videos are hoaxes. But magic is real.

Disappearing, walking through walls, reappearing, saving lives by moving faster than normal, it's all possible. Does automated video surveillance footage prove it? I'll believe it when I see it, because "Seeing is believing." Yet many, even after they see, still don't believe?
  
Copperfield wants Congress to believe in magic

The famous American illusionist David Copperfield is lobbying Congress to pass a resolution recognizing magic as art. It is an art, he says. Sometimes it's real, we say. This week, Copperfield was back in Washington D.C. asking for a new favor. He is lobbying Congress to pass this resolution. The Buddha had extraordinary powers so much that even reptilians (nagas) protected him.

Iddhi: The magical powers constitute one of the six kinds of "supernormal knowledges" (abhiññā) such as:
  • (1) division bodies: the power of multiplying
  • shape shifting: power of adopting another form
  • creating: power of issuing a mentally produced body
  • protection: power of penetrating knowledge to remain unhurt
  • safe in danger: power of penetrating concentration
  • (2) clairaudience
  • (3) reading others' minds
  • (4) remembering past lives
  • (5) clairvoyance (divine eye).
Devas, gandharvas ("shining ones") have powers.
The magical powers are treated in detail in the Path of Purification (Vis.M. XII; Pts.M., Vibhanga, Appendix). They are, of course, not a necessary condition for attaining enlightenment or nirvana.

They can be gained by developing the meditative absorptions.
 
"Noble power" (ariyā-iddhi) is the power of controlling one's ideas in such a way that one may consider something that is not repulsive as repulsive or something repulsive as not repulsive, while remaining imperturbable and full of equanimity.

This training of mind is frequently mentioned in the sutras (e.g., M.152, A.V.144), but only once is the name of ariyā-iddhi applied to it (DN 28). See more at Pts.M., Iddhi-kathā, Vis.M. XII. More

Do we experience quantum communication -- the instant telegraphing of our conscious intentions with no regard for distance and time? Telepathy may be a superhuman ability, one used by shapeshifting beings (devas) and gods (brahmas), light beings on other planets and frequencies, but it is something we are or were once quite capable of using. Some of us still are, sometimes cultivated in Buddhist meditation as the "higher powers" (abhiññā). The music of the spheres may be a symphony of coherent communications, much like the cells of a healthy body.

What did David Sereda, the ancient rishis, Nicolas Tesla, Bruce Lipton, Madame Blavatsky, Albert Einstein, Max Planck, Whitley Strieber, Gregg Braden, and others know? Are we actually evolving anymore, or have we actually been devolving for some time now as Michael A. Cremo points out in his extensive spiritual and archeological research? The truth is often kept top secret -- remote viewing, telekenesis, psi, ESP -- once it is confirmed by the powers that be, rather than revealing it to the masses. More peer reviewed science may be done under the strictures of government and military secrecy than all the pop science we see in journals, public university labs, and mainstream magazines. Vril, prana, chi, tachyon, torsion, zero-point physics... From coast to coast this is an unknown country. Just ask Streiber or Art Bell, but don't hold your breath waiting for George Noory to allow any actual revelations. He seems to have been inserted to downplay and manage the release of any potentially inconvenient revelations.

Particle Physics in Pasadena (Caltech)

What is the origin(s) of the universe? What are its dimensions? What are its primary causes and supportive conditions?
 
We know (or at least can know with certainty). But here, Science, have a crack at it. And remember to show your work when you produce the final equation you call an answer!
  
The growing field of particle physics is homing in on kalapas, the subatomic "particles of perception" the Buddha pointed out when he discussed ultimate-materiality.

Buddhist physics speaks of qualities of materiality (rupa) rather than tangible material realities as such. These subatomic building-blocks are more like aspects of blocks rather than amorphous blocks. These "elements," qualities, or features of material are spoken of as indirectly perceptible in profoundly elevated states of consciousness during meditation on the Four Elements (which, it cannot be emphasized enough, are not elementary particles but fundamental qualities of kalapas) and other Abhidharma practices.

Those who have seen such minute and almost unimaginable particles -- and we know more than one English speaker who has -- universally state that they look nothing like idealized "atom" posters in science classrooms. Unfortunately, they do not say much about how they do look because seeing is replaced by knowing-and-seeing. It goes deeper than observation to intimately/intuitive certainty and understanding of what is being seen.
 
But how could something that moves so fast ever be tracked by conscious-awareness? This is a great question! The Buddha could not come up with a simile for the speed of ultimate realities and settled for the time it takes a speeding arrow to traverse the shadow of a tree as a poor approximation. (This is a very inferior example that merely suggests something far too fast to even take note of; we would never see it coming).

Conscious awareness cannot take note of the arising-turning-passing of such realities. Fortunately, however, there is something faster than the fastest particle, faster than the fastest transformation, faster than the fastest material process. And that some-"thing" is consciousness (cittas, mind-moments).
 
This psychological or conscious-process can track the material-process because there are more impulsions (javanas) transpiring within a mind-moment than the phases of a kalapa, which lasts a moment. Having recorded it, one can play the track of a kalapa-process back, slowed down, for review in the mind-door. This when done correctly can lead to liberating insight in that it reveals the Three Marks of all phenomena. They are radically impermanent, hopelessly unsatisfactory, and utterly impersonal.

Performing this "reviewing" allows the successful meditator, having emerged from mind/heart intensifying and purifying absorptions (jhanas), to perceive the impossible -- to directly know-and-see physical reality. One does not take it on faith and is not liberated by faith, but rather by wisdom. The truth itself sets one free, for how could the heart/mind continue to cling to phenomena marked by such characteristics as one has just seen and can see again if one begins to doubt. Seeing replaces believing with complete certainty.

Alas, who will listen to such reports? Such knowledge-and-vision benefits only the perceivers. So if we would benefit, we must see for ourselves. Seeing will be believing -- when we see it for ourselves.

What does physics offer (besides lots of math homework)? Dr. Newman quoted Einstein, the post-lecture Q&A period, that it is far more amazing that things are comprehensible. That is the unlikely thing, and how amazing that math describes anything. Science is trying to make the subjective experience of the perceiver a universal, replicable experience. I don't know about you, but I've never replicated anyone's physics experiment, anyone's data, anyone's logical deductions. I take it on faith, I take it on authority, I take it as "handed down" by jargon-uttering elders in black robes and mortarboards.
 
And that's good enough; it doesn't change my inner-life, try as I might to have it change my attitude and outlook. But Buddhism makes particle physics a firsthand experience no one will believe, whereas "science" makes personal experience an academic report about an artificial experiment someone else concocted and carried out then reported on with some peer review of the alleged results and their meaning.
 
(If you ever want to doubt the "God particle," the Higgs boson, listen to firsthand reports by researchers at the LHC; their cautious pleas for not jumping to conclusions and adamant assertions that "more research is needed" do more to convince onlookers that little good is coming out of these grand endeavors beyond the financial support of the priestly duties of our current Brahmin Caste and their mantra-like mathematically-based mysterious-machinations).
 
But we were eager to hear it firsthand. And the one thing Dr. Newman said with certainty was that the Standard Model was wrong (deficient, incomplete, incompatible with observable results so far, but there is not yet a better theory to align itself with the data and make that data believable -- almost as if reality had to adjust to our limited descriptions and depictions of it before science would be happy). The best part came at the end when fewer than 1% of the audience stayed behind to ask questions. Everyone else just clapped and ran out.

Professor of physics Harvey Newman has been searching for signs of dark matter, extra dimensions, and the elusive Higgs particle at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, Switzerland. 
 
He reported from the high-energy frontier of particle physics on Wednesday night (Jan. 9, 2013) during the Watson Lecture Series at Caltech. His talk was open to the public and packed.

Q: What do you do?
A: I'm a high-energy physicist. Together with my colleague, Professor of physics Maria Spiropulu, we explore the forces and matter that make up our universe, using the highest energies one can [at this time] achieve at particle accelerators. [But we already have the means of going higher, and we will when we swap out decaying equipment with more powerful replacement parts.] These energies are now found in Switzerland, where CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, sends protons traveling at 99.999997 percent of the speed of light crashing head-on into one another inside the Large Hadron Collider, better known as the LHC.

The LHC has two general-purpose detectors -- our experiment, the Compact Muon Solenoid, or CMS, and ATLAS. "Compact" means "dense" not "small," and our experiment is relatively compact. It's only as tall as a four-story building, as opposed to ATLAS, which is like a six-story building.

Our lab had a primary role in designing the CMS's electromagnetic calorimeter, which detects high-energy photons and electrons using 76,000 crystals of lead tungstate. These crystals, which Caltech helped develop, together weigh 90 tons, and if they weren't so dense we would need even more of them in order to collect all those particles. And we need to see every particle, as we are looking for pairs of photons -- a key signature of the Higgs particle that we've been focusing on for decades. We had first hints by the end of 2011, and by July 2012, CMS and ATLAS had accumulated sufficient evidence to announce the discovery of a Higgs-like particle.

Q: What is the Higgs, and why are you looking for it?
A: In 1964, Peter Higgs and others [but not Dr. Stephen Hawking] proposed the existence of a field that permeates all of space and would allow the generation of particle masses. The photon, which carries the electromagnetic force, has no mass, but the W and Z particles, which carry the weak force, do. But if you take the unified theory of the electromagnetic and weak interactions and try to put in a mass term for the W and one for the Z, the mathematics don't work. When you rewrite the theory to include the Higgs field, the Z and the W now have mass, the photon stays massless, and you get this other thing called the Higgs particle.

It is really quite amazing that relatively simple mathematical expressions describe how nature works. There's no reason for it, necessarily, but it is a characteristic of the world we live in. Fundamental expressions like F = ma [force equals mass times acceleration] have great predictive power in their own domains, and when you go outside those domains you have to look for something even more fundamental.
So it is for the so-called Standard Model of particle physics. It has been very successful until now, and yet we know that something lies beyond it. It does not have a candidate particle for dark matter, for example. It only describes normal matter, which is just four percent of the matter in the universe. And then there's dark energy, which we're not even sure has a "particles and fields" description. That's a frontier where we don't even know yet how to write things down. The Standard Model also does not work in the early universe. If you calculate the mass of the Higgs particle, the calculation blows up when we get to an energy scale that lies between where the universe is today and the moment of the Big Bang.

Caltech has a central role in the search for dark matter and whatever else lies beyond the Standard Model. It's a never-ending journey, and one that has inspired students at Caltech for decades.
Q: How did you get into this line of work?
A: I was in the fourth grade in PS 225 in Brooklyn, and one day Mrs. DeSimone put out a cart of books that went way beyond what was in our class. I read them all from end to end, and then I started to read everything in sight.... More
