The Buddha: Why time has direction (Upton)

Buddhism better than Judaism for science?
It’s time for our newest installment on Paṭṭhāna — the Buddha’s hyper-precise in-depth teachings on cause and effect. For those not yet up to speed on this series, I recommend reading my previous posts. For the sake of today’s installment, the one on different types of “support” is relevant.

Those who have read the previous one on the three different types of support will remember that one of those three is sahajata paccaya — the condition by which things must always arise at the same time.

Paccaya is the Pali word for “cause” or “condition.” Jati is the Pali word for “birth.” Saha means “same” — so sahajata means “born at the same time.”

But Patthana goes further. It also offers us purejata paccaya and pacchajata paccaya. The jata part still means “born,” while pure is Pali for “before,” and paccha is Pali for “after” — so here we have “born before” and “born after” conditions.

Of these two, purejata paccaya, or “born-before condition,” is intuitively far easier to understand. This is a condition whereby the cause arises before the effect. We can think of countless examples in nature where this condition holds:
  • a mother must always be born before her child,
  • the fruit tree must always grow before the fruit,
  • the river must exist before the fish come and swim in it.
In Abhidhamma terms, an example of this condition would be the various types of sensitive materiality that must already exist in order to support the consciousness that arises dependent on them. For example, eye-sensitive materiality must already exist in order for eye-consciousness to arise.

Another example occurs with some objects of attention. For example, eye-consciousness cannot arise without a visual object to cognize. So the visual object, which will be some kind of light or color, needs to already be existing and well established in order for eye-consciousness to arise. The cause comes first; the result comes after.

Pacchajata paccaya, however, is not as intuitive. Here we have the result arising first and the cause coming later. What?! Backwards [retro-] causality? Really? Well, no, not quite. It’s not really as mystical as it might sound.

Pacchajata paccaya is actually a condition whereby something that arises later is the cause for something that arose earlier to keep on existing. For example, there’s rain that falls after a tree already exists and helps keep that tree alive. Another example would be how children may at times give their otherwise exhausted parents a reason to keep on living, or indeed how students might give their weary teacher a reason to keep on teaching. ;-)

In Abhidhamma terms, we see that the consciousness and mental factors support materiality to keep on existing, even though the materiality existed first and the consciousness and mental factors came along later.

Why time has a direction
The truly powerful thing about these two conditions is that
I study without but not within.
they give a direction to time
.

Time, at least in the way we usually think about it, is just a concept. It is something the mind makes up to measure change.

This is easy to understand by choosing any unit of time and thinking about how it is defined.
  • One year = the Earth goes round our Sun;
  • One day = the Earth completes a full rotation on its axis;
  • One second = the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between two hyperfine energy levels of the ground state of the caesium-133 atom. (Yes, that really is how it came to be defined).
Time is always measured in terms of an amount of change that has happened in that period. Change is what is really happening. Time is the mind’s overlay in order to measure and make sense of the change.

But if time is just a concept, does that mean that we can just choose to freeze or go back or forwards in time? Well, no, because what purejata paccaya and pacchajata paccaya tell us is that some things must always happen first and other things must always happen after.

The flow of change has a direction. It doesn’t just seem to have a direction on a conceptual level. The directionality of time is hard-baked into the building blocks of reality.

So here we have two unassuming conditions having a profound effect on our reality or at least on how we experience it. If reality itself unfolds directionally, what does that tell us about the nature of our own lives?

What things in our lives need to come first? What things must follow after in order to sustain us? Let me know in the comments how you see these two conditions quietly working in daily life and how they are shaping your Dhamma paths.

With metta and gratitude,

Scientists just made TIME run backward

Social psychologists know time is mutable.
(Julia McCoy) Jan. 19, 2026: Scientists (physicists) just made time run BACKWARD (and this changes everything about reality). Their experiments are presumably objective because they are repeatable and scalable, as published in Nature Physics.
COMMENTARY
Editors, Wisdom Quarterly
Big deal! - What do you mean? This is the most tremendous scientific advancement of our lives! - I could do the same thing. - You're crazy! You couldn't even get your hands on the meta materials to try! - Sure I could, just borrow them from my brother. - You're brother's a scientist? - No, just a music fan with lots of vinyl. Is that meta enough for ya? - How's that going to help you? - Pink Floyd just hit a world record with more than like 1,000 nonconsecutive weeks on the Billboard charts for Dark Side of the Moon. - So what?

Does it play Pink Floyd? - No, Gilligan, why?
D'uh, that album has "Time" on it. I could make it run backward; in fact, I have made it run backward lots of times, looking for backward masking to explain its enduring popularity. - That's not the same thing! - It may not be, but I did it, and it was no big deal. - Well this is a BIG deal because it goes to prove, time is not real. At least, it's not what we think it is. All time is NOW. We can play it front or back or revisit it or change it through retrocausation, but it is definitely NOT what it seems to be. - Oh, that is a big deal. - D'uh, I told you!

"Temporal anti-parity–time symmetry in diffusive transport"
OK, now just as an experiment, everyone pedal backwards to before we were shipwrecked.

ABSTRACT
Nature Physics
: Parity–time symmetry has revolutionized wave and energy transport control in non-Hermitian systems, yet has so far been mostly explored in static phases, where a system’s behaviour is locked into a fixed-symmetric or broken-symmetry phase. The vast potential of time-domain dynamics has remained largely untapped. Here we introduce the concept of temporal anti-parity–time symmetry, a principle that allows the transport dynamics of a system to be actively shaped in real time. Rather than designing static phases, we influence the timing of non-Hermitian phase transitions, making the system’s temporal evolution itself a programmable degree of freedom. Through the dynamic control of material properties and convective flow, we dictate the exact moments these transitions occur, thereby controlling the entire transport history of the system. This temporal control achieves highly tunable field localization and realizes counterintuitive thermal transport, enabling temperature profiles to move forwards with convection, backwards against it or remain trapped at arbitrary locations. Our findings extend non-Hermitian physics into the time domain and establish a framework for on-demand wave and energy transport. Source

Science 'films' HAPPINESS in brain

Better living through (natural) chemistry
There's a chemical in dark chocolate (real Theobroma cacao) related to happiness and good sensations. It's also present in mary-jah-wanna, which probably explains why consumers get so clingy and attached to using the herbal substance. This naturally occurring chemical is called
anandamide. Ananda, of course, is the name of the Buddha's closest friend and monastic attendant (likely his son with Mriga from before the birth of Rahula with his wife Yasodhara (aka Bimba Devi, according to some Buddhist schools). In Sanskrit and Pali anand means "bliss, joy, rapture." The suffix amide is added: In the usual nomenclature, one adds the term "amide" to the stem of the parent acid's name. For instance, the amide derived from acetic acid is named acetamide (CH3CONH2).
Now, one might be wondering, “What on earth is anandamide, and why should I care?” Well, pull up a chair and grab a square of dark chocolate, because we’re about to embark on a flavor-filled journey into the world of neuroscience and cocoa chemistry. Anandamide, derived from the Sanskrit word ananda, meaning “bliss or joy,” is a naturally occurring compound in our brains. It’s part of the endocannabinoid system, a complex network that helps regulate various bodily functions, including mood, appetite, and pain sensation. In essence, anandamide is the brain’s very own mood-enhancing, stress-busting superhero. But how does this marvelous molecule work its magic? When anandamide binds to specific receptors in our brains, it triggers a cascade of feel-good effects. More

Buddha's Brain: Neuroscience of Happiness
Happiness is literally an inside job
, according to scientific materialism, which believes that we are nothing more than material constructs and that the miracle of consciousness is but an epiphenomenon following on the interaction of material objects like cells, chemicals, molecules, and ever smaller atom, electrons, and quarks.

Organized religion errs on the side of spiritualism, believing us to be a "soul," "spirit," or "magical subtlety." These three things are real, but they are not the self any more than consciousness is.

There is nama rupa, "name" (the instructions) and "form" (the carrying out of those instructions in the material sphere). But self (atta) is not that. How else could it be? If it not one, it has to be the other, unless it is both? It is both both and neither.

What we regard as "self" (soul, ego) is mind-and-body, but though mental and physical processes exist and are active, they do not amount to a concrete "self."

The "self" that exists is dependent, temporary, ephemeral subject to Three Characteristics of All Conditioned Things: they are impermanent, incapable of satiating/fulfilling, and are impersonal.

This last characteristic is the one that is impossible to believe, but it is the key to awakening/enlightenment in the Buddha's teaching.

We can see that all things are impermanent, in flux, constantly changing, undependable. We can see that we have never been fulfilled for long; we experience great pleasure but remain hungry, in many cases becoming more hungry for newer and better pleasures.

IF THERE IS NO SELF, WHAT IS THERE THEN? The Buddha answered this question in terms of Dependent Origination (paticca-samuppāda). And it is on account of not seeing this, not grasping, not penetrating this that we have wandered so long in this painful samsara.

Will we fall under the spell of scient-ism, run to religion for shelter, or begin to see what the Buddha was getting at when he encouraged us to strive for calm and liberating-insight?

"Science can prove what it says." Can it? It redefines "happiness" as an endorphin then shows a peptide "walking," and viola, nonmaterialistic Buddhism is wrong? That's how it might seem, but it is not the case. We must look more deeply. Science fails us. And coming and seeing and investigating what the Buddha taught liberates us. Try it.

Buddha's Brain: The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness, Love, and Wisdom
Preface by Jack Kornfield
(Paperback) Authors Dr. Rick Hanson Ph.D. and Dr. Richard Mendius, MD (with preface by Jack Kornfield and foreword by Dr. Daniel J. Siegel, MD) have 4.7 out of 5 stars (with 2,019 reviews).

Change your brain, change your life with this essential classic from New York Times bestselling author Dr. Rick Hanson—now celebrating 15 years in print with more than 500,000 copies sold.

Great teachers like the historical Buddha, Jesus, Moses, Mohammed, and Gandhi were all born with brains built essentially like everyone else’s—and then they changed their brains in ways that changed the world.

Neuroscience now reveals how the flow of thoughts actually sculpts the brain. More and more, we are learning that it’s possible to strengthen positive brain states.

By combining breakthroughs in science with insights from thousands of years of mindfulness practice, we too can shape our own “Buddha’s Brain” for greater happiness, love, and wisdom.

Buddha’s Brain draws on evidence-based neuroscience to show readers how to stimulate their brains for
  • more fulfilling relationships,
  • a deeper spiritual life, and
  • a greater sense of inner confidence and self-worth.
Using guided meditations and mindfulness exercises, learn how to activate the brain states of calm, joy, and compassion instead of worry, sorrow, and anger.

Most importantly, anyone who implements these practices will foster positive psychological growth that will literally change the way life is lived day-to-day.

This book provides an essential intersection of psychology, neurology, and contemplative practice. It’s filled with practical tools and skills useful every day to tap into the unused potential of the brain and rewire it over time for greater well-being. More

Terrence, Neil DeGrasse, and Joe Rogan 😲

The new most fun thing to do is watch scary and creepy Tik Toks, but the hosts of such shows are often embarrassingly nincompoopish folks who seem to know nothing and have no business commenting, though they have next to nothing to say other than, "Hey, let me know in the comments section what you think." Here's a guy with a brain, even though his interesting commentary and connections are contributing little. It would be better to watch Terrence on the Joe Rogan Experience.

The Limits of Language (Alan Watts)

Alan Watts via Healthy Minds, March 4, '21; Dhr. Seven, Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

What are the hidden assumptions behind our language and figuring, reading and 'rithmetic? The false dichotomy of mind and matter, brain and body, leads us to mistakes in our paradigm, our philosophical view of life and its meaning.

Alan Watts: Language and its Limits
(Healthy Minds) "The Limits of Language" full lecture, Parts I and II, by Alan Watts, the  renowned Western mystic and teacher of Eastern philosophy and esoterica.

I get In My Own Way along The Way or Tao
Watts has helped guide countless lives to peace and success. He's an inspirational, motivational speaker, delivering ancient Buddhist and other Eastern wisdom and esoteric knowledge in ways understandable to our Western assumptions, questioning them and turning them around.

How can we turn around and see our own head that's thinking about seeing? See? It runs away. We never get at it. We can hardly bite our own teeth or touch the tip of this finger with the tip of this finger. This is the principle.

The Indian founder of Hinduism, Shankara, explained this beautifully in his commentary on the Kena Upanishad, where he says, “That which is the knower – the ground of all knowledge – is never itself an object of knowledge, just as fire does not burn itself.”

Points of Controversy: “Thusness”

Shwe Zan Aung and Mrs. C.A.F. Rhys Davids (trans.), Tathatākathā, Points of Controversy 19.5, Of “Thusness”; Amber Larson, Dhr. Seven, Pat Macpherson (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Controverted point: That the fundamental characteristics of all things (sabba-dhamma) are unconditioned.

Theravādin: (PTS cs 19.5.1) Do you then identify those fundamental characteristics or “thusness” ["suchness," tathatā] with nirvana, the Shelter…the Goal, the Past-Deceased, the Ambrosial? Or are there two “unconditioneds”? You deny both alternatives, but you must assent to one or the other.

If to the latter, I ask, Are there two kinds of Shelters and so on? And is there a boundary or…interstice between them? (PTS cs 19.5.2) Again, assuming a materiality (rūpatā) of matter or body, is not materiality unconditioned?

You assent. Then I raise the same difficulties as before. (PTS cs 19.5.3) I raise them, too, if you admit a “hedonality” of feeling, a “perceivability” of perception, a saṅkhāratā or co-efficiency of mental coefficients, a consciousness of being conscious.

If all these be unconditioned, are there then six categories of “unconditioneds”? (Uttarāpathaka: PTS cs 19.5.4) But if I am wrong, is the “thusness” of all things the Five Aggregates [clung to as self] taken together?

Theravādin: Yes.

Uttarāpathaka: Then that “thusness” of all things is unconditioned. Source

Scientists discover universe's missing matter

Jaskiran Kaur (ibtimes.co.uk, 5/28/20); Pat Macpherson, CC Liu (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Scientists discover universe's "missing matter"
Soon we will reveal ourselves and explain.
Astronomers have discovered the normal missing matter of the universe they have been looking for for 30 years.

Our universe harbors several mysteries that scientists have been trying to resolve for centuries. Cosmic matter and its activities are still beyond our understanding.

However, in the latest development, astronomers may have solved one of the biggest puzzles of the universe found the universe's "missing matter."

Where has the "matter" (rupa) been hiding?
For decades, astronomers have been aware of the existence of "missing matter" of the universe.

However, the origin and source of the strange aspect of the universe remained still undetected until now. The international team of researchers has now discovered from where the missing baryonic matter is located.

Now, the researchers used mysterious fast radio bursts also known as FRBs — powerful millisecond bursts of radio pulse caused by mysteriously occurring high-energy astrophysical process — to find the matter, what causes them and where it can be traced back to.

Square pegs: if only we could box space bubbles
The scientists have now discovered all of the missing "normal" matter in the vast space between stars and galaxies. The results of the study were published in a journal named Nature.

According to the report, the astronomers have been aware of the missing material for 30 years.

"We know from measurements of the Big Bang how much matter there was at the beginning of the Universe," Lead author Associate Professor Jean-Pierre Macquart, from the Curtin University node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) said in a news release statement.

But when we looked out into the present Universe, we couldn't find half of what should be there. It was a bit of an embarrassment. More

Things follow their nature to arise and fall

Ajahn Lee via Ven. Sujato, Ellie Askew, edited/expanded by Dhr. Seven, Wisdom Quarterly

I'm wasting away like Pink Floyd
For people to be happy or sad, skillful or unskillful, all depends on the heart.

The heart's in charge. It's the most important thing to be found in our body. Why? That's because it's lasting and responsible for all the skillful and unskillful things we do.

As for the body, it knows nothing of pleasure or pain, happiness or sadness. And it's not at all responsible for anyone's skillful or unskillful karma (actions). Why is that? That's because the body isn't lasting. It's empty.

To say that it's "empty" means that as soon as it's deprived of breath (prana), its four properties [the Four Great Elements, which are actually properties or qualities of matter] -- earth, water, wind, and fire -- separate from one another and return to their original nature.

The parts coming from the earth property return to be just earth, as they originally were. The parts coming from the water property return to be just water, as they originally were. The parts coming from the wind and fire properties return to be just wind and fire, as they originally were.

Don't have to be wasted, but it helps
There's nothing about them that's "woman" or "man," "good," or "bad." This is why we're taught, Rupam aniccam: "Physical form is radically impermanent."

Rupam dukkham: It's hard to bear. Rupam anatta: It's impersonal, not-self, empty, and doesn't stay under anyone's control.

[This third characteristic of existence is perhaps the most important] because even if we try to forbid form from growing old, growing sick, or dying, it wouldn't behave in line with our wishes or commands.

[Why is that? By its very nature] it has to fall in line with the processes of building up and wasting away (incessantly rising and falling) in accordance with the nature of natural formations. This applies to everyone.

Ajahn Chah: Oil and Water

Oil+water=lava lamp (rookieparenting.com)
Oil and water are different in the same way that a wise person and an ignorant one are different.

The Buddha lived with form (physical body, materiality), sound, fragrance, taste, touch, and thought. He was an enlightened being, so he was able to turn away from them rather than toward them.

He turned away and LET GO little by little because he understood that the heart is just the heart and thought is just thought. He didn’t confuse them or mix them together.

The heart is just the heart. Thoughts and feelings are just thoughts and feelings. Let things be as they are. Let form be just form, let sound be just sound, let thought be just thought.

Why should we let ourselves become attached to them? If we feel and think in this way (seeing them as just feelings and just thoughts) then there arises detachment and separateness.

Our thoughts and feelings will be on one side and our heart will be on the other. Just like oil and water, they may be in the same bottle but they are separate.

Science is fun: strange materials (video)

TOP 10 INFORMATION - TTI; Seth Auberon, Dhr. Seven, Crystal Quintero, Wisdom Quarterly

7 strange, cool materials that actually exist!
Symbolic encoding in sacred art
Here are seven of the strangest materials that actually exist. The material world, according to Buddhist physics, is composed of kalapas, the "particles of perception." These are actually the qualities of material, combinations of the various elements (maha-dhatu). But there materiality is treated in the ultimate sense to see it for what it really is rather than thinking that things are what they seem. And better than science, which seeks to demonstrate things to others, Buddhist physics is concerned with direct experience of the ultimate truth for the purpose of liberation from delusion, aversion, and attraction to things characterized by being impermanent, unsatisfactory, and (strangest of all) impersonal.

But dense mercury and light table salt make no sense together.

But science is the secular "religion" of the day. Contact facebook.com/top10info... for more information. One strange material is an ultra hydrophobic (water-resistant) material called Gentoo, a next generation, corrosion-resistant, easy-cleaning coating. More

The true (spiritual-scientific) value of GOLD

Mike Donkers, NewsTarget, 2/24/08; Pat Macpherson, Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
The historical Buddha's skin had a golden sheen when he emerged from meditation.

Spiritual and medicinal gold with incredible healing potential
Ormus, also known as ORMEs, m-state elements, white powder gold, or the Philosopher's Stone, was discovered in 1975 by an Arizona farmer named David Hudson.

He discovered some material in his soil that he had never seen before. He laid it out to dry in the hot Arizona sun so he could have it analyzed. What happened next was absolutely remarkable: The stuff exploded in a big flash of light and disappeared! But when he dried it without the use of sunlight it didn't disappear.

Hudson was a very successful farmer and businessman, so he could afford to have an expensive assay of the material done by a professor at New York's Cornell University. The stuff turned out to contain gold, silver, iron, and aluminum, among other things.

However, the gold and silver did not dissolve in fluid, as is usually the case. The iron and aluminum also did not dissolve in various acids and in their isolated form, they formed a strange black matter.

One by one the elements were isolated. Until the standard tests revealed that there should be nothing left. But there was something left -- a lot of it, in fact. The scientist told Hudson there was nothing, although after removal of the individual elements a staggering 98% of the material was still left.

Hudson had spent a lot of money on the various analyses and left the university completely disappointed with academic science.

David Icke met "Her" on DMT/ayahuasca.
Dissatisfied but determined, Hudson sought out a German expert who, together with him, was willing to analyze the stuff further and build special machinery to do so. The assays showed that it contained various precious elements such as platinum and variants thereof such as rhodium, iridium, ruthenium, and osmium.

The tests also showed that this material reacted differently to various heat and cold treatments. The time period to which they exposed the stuff to hot or cold temperatures also produced different results.

The turning point was at 70 seconds heat treatment. When Hudson stopped the process at 69 seconds the powder contained no precious elements, yet at 70+ seconds it did.

Hudson then went to a specialist at the University of Iowa. They conducted several experiments and once again produced the most amazing results.

The material expressions of the stuff magically changed depending on the degree of warming or cooling they subjected it to. Among these forms were a white powder and also glass.

Elements such as iron spontaneously disappeared or morphed into other elements. The material also changed weight, particularly when exposed to air.

Hudson was advised to patent these elements to prevent others from using his findings to keep him from experimenting further. In March of 1988 Hudson patented these elements. He called them Orbitally Rearranged Monoatomic Elements (ORMEs).

Kalapas (atom particles) are strange
This substance has become known as Ormus and stands for what are 12 known elements, which exist both in a [fine] material and an immaterial [arupa] or purely energetic form.

Hudson found this out by getting in touch with one of the American pioneers of quantum physics, Hal Puthoff. Puthoff explained to him the strange phenomena associated with Ormus.

Ormus elements are capable of losing their material form (disappearing) under the influence of warmth and sunlight, making them no longer subject to the laws of gravity and even capable of dissolving into sunlight.

This is what Hudson had himself witnessed when he first dried the material in the hot sun. The Ormus had literally become one with the light and transferred to another dimension in which there is no space-time.
By cooling it down, he learned to bring the stuff back to the exact place where he had set it to dry, back to the material world of space-time in which we live.

Ormus is a superconductor. These elements resonate with the primal energy, the zero-point from which all life originates and which is a quantum potential of possibilities.

I knew there was something in this thing.
Ormus is one with this endless source of energy, which can be found in the air, soil, plants, stones, and sea. Hudson even showed by dissecting animal brains that they, too, contained Ormus. According to Hudson our brains contain at least 5% Ormus.

This percentage can be raised considerably if we take in food and water with a high Ormus content.

It is exactly these foods that are so sadly lacking today. Hudson refers to Ormus as "the light of life" and "the Spirit" [prana]. He claims it not only makes us more spiritual but that it's capable of correcting DNA, too.

Now think of the experiments the alchemists carried out in which they tried to change metals into gold and made a white powder out of gold, the long sought after Philosopher's Stone.

The Church persecuted, tortured, and killed these people. What did they discover that we're not supposed to know? The ancient Egyptians also knew.

Gold has always been the true money and remains so to this day. But the true value of gold may well be medicinal and spiritual instead of material or financial.

There are, unfortunately, dark and powerful forces at work which are trying to keep us from realizing our true potential, our true evolution to a higher consciousness. CONTINUED IN PART II

MIKE DONKERS is an English teacher from the Netherlands who started taking care of his own health in October 2006 because doctors could not help him. His interest in the food and health connection has him led to in-depth research, particularly on the role sea minerals play in the regeneration of cells. He is in the band The Mellotones (nubluz.com).
