Asian beauty standards: pale, thin is fat

Ugly or utterly average? Jessica Alba's face
Are you physically attractive? - That depends; whaddya mean by "physical attractiveness"? - It is the degree to which any person's physical features are considered beautiful, that is to say, aesthetically pleasing.

In that case, probably not. But who's to say really? - The term often implies sexual attractiveness or desirability. - In that case, definitely not. - But it can also be distinct from either. - Oh, tell me more.

The New Age of Sexism
There are many factors that influence one person's attraction to another, with physical aspects being only one of them [probably the most important one to males].

Physical attraction itself includes universal perceptions common to all human cultures such as facial symmetry [5], sociocultural dependent attributes, and personal preferences unique to a particular individual [6]. More

The case of South "K-Pop" Korea
Korean Beauty Expo, Vietnam: spreading mania
South Korean beauty standards have become a well-known feature of South Korean culture. In 2015, a global survey by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons placed South Korea in the Top Ten of countries who had the highest rate of cosmetic surgeries [1][2].

Korean beauty standards prioritize maintaining a youthful [even infantilized] appearance rather than looking mature.

ET? Double eyelid surgery on Korean eyes
A combination of clear skin, an even skin complexion, a slim V-shaped jawline, and pronounced puffy Aegyo-Sal (fatty, bag-like, deposits under the eye which are common in children and rare in adults) contribute to the desirable youthful aesthetic and personal presentation.

Bikini Beauty vs. hideous Fat Cow
The increase in influence of South Korean media, such as K-pop, Korean dramas, and advertisements throughout South Korea presents this softer appearance to the public as the desirable norm.

Even in men, this softer and more androgynous appearance is preferred in both romantic interests and are shown more in media, as compared to men with traditionally masculine features.

Cultural pressure
Long Short Legs Man Experiment
A study from 2008 determined that 20 percent of young South Korean girls have undergone cosmetic surgery. This is significantly above the average rate in other countries [3].

A recent survey from Gallup Korea in 2015 determined that approximately one-third of South Korean women between 19 and 29 have admitted to have had plastic surgery [4]. More

What about the Enlightened West?
Booty beauty test
Fortunately, we don't have these problems in the West, where everyone is treated on her or his own merits and judged by the contents of his or her character and inner beauty.

We have advanced to an Enlightened society, free of sexism, misogyny, homophobia, racism, ageism, influence of mass media, product sellers who make TV commercials, and other extraneous factors out of a person's control. If only the world would catch up to our advancements and example.

Mardi Gras pre-Lent party: Fat Tuesday

Not Rosary beads! That's tomorrow. Today we want cheap shiny plastic beads. Throw 'em!
Rio Carnival LIVE | Spectacular Samba shows, Rio De Janeiro Carnival 2025 Parade | Brasil | N18G

Mardi Gras, Carnival, Ash Wednesday, Lent
Show you what for beads? - No, I want to give you a Rosary. Show me where you'd wear it.
Ash Wednesday tika makes one better: Be good.
Mardi Gras (lit. "Fat Tuesday" or Pancake Day) is a Christian holiday, celebrated mainly by the Catholic variety. It is a popular cultural phenomenon that dates back thousands of years to pagan European spring fertility rites.
Better beads on Mardi Gras for a better world
Also known as Carnival like the cruise line, Carnaval in Brazil, and Karneval in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, it’s celebrated in many countries around the world — mainly those with large Roman Catholic populations — on the day before the religious fasting season of Lent begins.

Brazil (Rio), Italy (Venice), and North America (New Orleans) play host to some of the holiday’s most famous public festivities, drawing tens of thousands of tourists and revelers every year.

  • Take ashes seriously like a sadhu
Holy ash (bhasma, vibhuti) ash is the sign that adorns the forehead of Hindus (and Catholics at the start of Lent). Used by Shaivites and the others used to mean God appearing as a supreme flame, now reduced to a cross or X. Naturally, this holy symbol was appropriated by the religion of "universalism" (catholic in its original meaning) for world conquest, which went around the planet taking all manner of symbols and customs, depositing them in Rome, putting them on display in the Vatican as a sign of worldwide conquest, and then celebrating them and imposing them on others like patriarchal and strictly hierarchal religion. India is also the source of the Holy Rosary (rudraksha), the 108 or 54 wooden bead mala used by meditators doing japa (repetition of a God's name, or mantra recitation, or a prayer to steady the mind). templesinindiainfo.com
When is Mardi Gras?

Cremation pyre ashes to ashes, dust to dust
Mardi Gras is traditionally celebrated on “Fat Tuesday,” the Tuesday before holy Ash Wednesday (the day Catholics get tilakas (forehead ashes) like good Hindus, and the start of Lent, when we fast and get tempted by Satan like Saint Issa (Jesus) did that time in the desert. So if we fast and behave well, the Devil will come to tempt us like he did in the Judean desert.

Lent is for penance-tapas to purify oneself
In many areas, however, Mardi Gras has evolved into a week-long festival of excess and debauchery. Mardi Gras 2025 will fall on Tuesday.

That's March 4th this year, which is Gina Marie's birthday, when she marches fourth along with everyone else because she didn't march first, second, third, or so on.

What is Mardi Gras?

Father, I have sinned. - Come confess to me.
Mardi Gras is a tradition that dates back thousands of years to pagan celebrations of spring and fertility, including the raucous Roman festivals of Saturnalia and Lupercalia.

When missionary Christianity arrived in Rome, religious leaders decided to appropriate and co-op these popular local pagan traditions into their new imperial faith, an easier task than trying to abolish them altogether.
  • If the authorities tried that, they would have to deal with religious revolts, Bacchanalian backlashes, violent uprisings, and widespread scofflaw celebrations alongside destruction of churches as seen in Norwegian black metal vandalism. It would be like trying to put an end to American tailgate parties and post-game riots and football hooliganism in the U.S.
I'll be good for Lent (La Penitente)
As a result, the excess and debauchery of the Mardi Gras season became a prelude to Lent, the 40 days of fasting and penance (atonement for sin) between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday.

Along with Christianity, Mardi Gras spread from Rome to other European countries, including France, Germany, Spain, and England. More

Why is Santa Buddha (Budai) so fat?

Hotei/Budai is not Buddhist but Shinto
"The Legend of Hotei, the Laughing Buddha" (holymtn.com) edited by Wisdom Quarterly

Hotei (Budai) is a Shinto god
Japanese Hotei (known in Chinese as Budai) is one of the Shichi Fukujin, or "Seven Shinto-Gods of Luck." He is the "god of happiness, laughter, and the wisdom of contentment" and the patron of the weak and of children, fortunetellers, and bartenders.
  • The term "Shinto" derives from the combination of two Chinese characters -- shin (神), which means "spirit" (kami, supernatural entities, possibly heavenly ETs coming to this dimension) or "god," and (道, tao), which means "way," "road," or "path" [45]. Shintō (神道) is therefore "the Way of the Gods" (or Spirits, the shapeshifting kami at the center of the priestly religion). It was a term already used in the I-Ching or Book of Changes, referring to the divine order of nature [46]. Around the time of the spread of Buddhism in the Han Dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE), the term was used to distinguish indigenous Chinese religions (shamanic or magic-based traditions) from the new imported religion. Ge Hong used it in his Baopuzi as a synonym for Taoism [47]. Shinto is animistic and polytheistic with priests who deal with the unruly shapeshifting monsters/gods known as the kami. The Chinese term 神道 (MC zyin daw) was originally adopted into Japanese as Jindō [48]; this was possibly first used as a Buddhist term to refer to non-Buddhist deities [49] or spirits. More
Budai points at the Moon
Hotei is distinguished by his [fat] body, which is of generous proportions with a round belly exposed beneath loose robes. This big jelly belly is a symbol of happiness, luck, and generosity.

On his back he carries a huge linen sack, containing candy, precious things, and gifts of good fortune, including children.

He also holds an uchiwa, a flat fan of Chinese origin used by ancient chieftains as an emblem of authority and wish granting.

Hotei may sit in an old cart drawn by boys, as the Wagon Priest, and can be compared with the Buddhistic Mi-lo-Fo.

Chinese backstory
I am the big Friendly One. Here's some candy!
In Chinese Buddhism he is known as Budai, the "Loving or Friendly One." He was a wandering Chan Buddhist monk who lived in the 9th century.

At his death between the years of 901 and 903, he recited a poem that revealed to the world that he was in fact the Bodhisattva Maitreya in disguise.

Maitreya, Chinese Mahayana Buddhists believe, is the Future Buddha, who will return to the world and bring innumerable individuals to realization (bodhi) and salvation (nirvana).

This concept of hope for all those who suffer, combined with Budai’s pleasing (always kind and smiling) human features, made him a most popular Buddhist deity (deva).

Good Luck Budai honored in Thailand
It was not until the 16th century that he was canonized as the sixteenth and last Chinese Bodhisattva.

According to Chinese legend he carried a sack of candy to give to children. He is sometimes worshiped as a god of good luck and prosperity.

He is always represented as very stout (fat), with breasts and upper abdomen exposed to view. His face has a widely grinning, joyful, or laughing expression, so he is also known loosely as "the Laughing Buddha" even though he is NOT a buddha.
  • [EDITOR'S NOTE: Even "Maitreya Buddha" is actually not yet a buddha as his name would suggest but rather a bodhisattva, that is, "a being striving to become a supreme buddha" (samma sam buddha) in the future.]
He stands in the first hall of Buddhist monasteries. Because of his constant good nature, he has become the symbol of philosophical contentment. Source
The Laughing Buddha Story | Joy of Enlightenment | Zen Buddhism

(Narrative Dreamscape) This short Zen story follows the tale of Hotei (Budai, Putai), a Chinese Buddhist monk who attains "enlightenment" [satori or kensho, an epiphany or spiritual realization] after hearing a child's laughter. He then wanders the land being called the "Laughing Buddha" [Bodhisattva], spreading joy and showing that enlightenment [a realization] can be found by embracing the humor and impermanence of life. This lighthearted and inspirational Zen tale reminds us not to take life too seriously but to greet each moment with childlike joy and presence. Let this [Fat Happy] Laughing Buddha story bring a smile to the face and warmth to the heart.

Funky Buddha's Oktoberfest? Alcohol

Hey, where your tutu is, Desi? - Hey, where's your llama, Dolly? - AH HA HA HA!
.
Budai brand beer?
Imagine a place so crass that it exploits the Buddha's image to promote beer and hard liquor, drunkenness and carelessness, negligence and unskillful karma. Let's call the place "Buddha Bar." No, that's taken. Let's call it Funky Buddha. Open it on the dangling participle of the country (Sandy Schlong Beach, Florida).

Let's invite the Dalai Lama, who says he's all about laughing it up, and tell him to bring his freaky friends like the ghost of Archbishop Desmond Tutu. We can hold a skimpy BBC (Buddha Bikini Contest) with a large purse and a slow reveal that begins with the wet tee-shirt phase.

Yo yo yo, how we feeling out there tonight!?
DJ Buddhahed can spin the turntables with EDM and hip-hop beats pleasing to all. Fight through protesters and picketers to get in there and, BAM, we've got ourselves a party. Well, no need for imagination because a company called Funky Buddha beat us to it: funkybuddha.com with BuddhaFest MarZen

SUTRA: To Sujata (Sigalovada)

Doesn't booze make the writer?
(DN 16) Thus I have heard. One time, the Buddha was staying on Vulture's Peak (Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa in Rājagṛha), Rajgir. He was accompanied by a large assembly of 1,250 monastics.

It was then that the Buddha (the Blessed One, the Bhagavān) put on his outer robe and took his bowl into the city for alms. At the time, there was a prominent man’s son named Sujata in Rajgir. Early in the morning, he went out of the city to go for a walk in the park. He bathed, wetting his entire body. He then bowed in all the directions: east, west, south, north, above, and below.

The Buddha saw Sujata getting wet [as a mark of respect] then bowing in the directions. Seeing this, the Buddha went over to Sujata and asked: “Why did you leave the city in the early morning to go to a park, wet your entire body, and bow in the directions?”

Sujata explained to the Buddha, “My father’s death is imminent, and he gave me this instruction: ‘When you go to bow, you should first bow to the east, south, west, north, above, and below.’ I dare not neglect to carry out my father’s instruction, so after I’ve bathed, I first saluted while facing east then bowed to the east. I do this for all the cardinal directions -- south, west, north, above, and below.”

The Buddha then told Sujata, “These 'directions' are only names. We, too, have this practice, but we do not bow to the directions to pay respect to them in this noble teaching [enlightening Dharma].”

Sujata then said to the Buddha, “Please, Blessed One, it would be good if one were to explain the way it is done in the noble Teaching!”

The Buddha said, “Listen closely, listen closely! Consider it well, for I will explain this.”

Sujata replied, “Very well. I am glad to hear it.”

DUI with loaded gun and salsa: Welcome to TX
The Buddha taught: “Suppose one knows of four unskillful actions, and the grounds for their being unskillful, so one avoids them and is able to know the six actions that squander wealth.

“That is to say, Sujata, one abandons four unskillful actions and pays homage to the six directions. It will be good for the present life, and one will obtain good results in later lives.

“It will be the source for this in the present life and later lives. In the present life, one is commended by the wise and gains this one worldly reward: When the body breaks up and life ends, one will be reborn in a good place.

“Sujata, you should know, those four bad actions are: 1. killing, 2. stealing, 3. sexual misconduct, and 4. false speech. These are the four bad actions.

“What are the four grounds for these bad actions? They are: 1. desire, 2. anger, 3. fear, and 4. delusion.

“If one does unskillful actions on these four grounds, then one will decline.”

After saying this, the Buddha restated it in verse:

“Desire, anger, fear, delusion:
Those who harbor these four
See their reputation dwindle away
As the waning moon does day by day.”

The Buddha further told Sujata, “If one avoids these unskillful actions on these four grounds, then one will improve.”

The Buddha then restated this in verse:

“One who avoids unskillful actions
Done out of desire, anger, fear, or delusion
Will see improvement day by day
As the waxing moon steady gains.”

What happened to all our money, Brian? - This.
“The Buddha further told Sujata, “The six actions that squander wealth are:
  1. indulging in alcohol
  2. gambling
  3. self-indulgence
  4. getting carried away at musical performances
  5. associating with bad friends and
  6. idleness.
“These are the six acts that squander wealth.

“Sujata, suppose one understands these four actions, avoids these unskillful actions done on these four grounds, and knows the six actions that squander wealth.

“Doing this, Sujata, one can abandon these four grounds and make offerings to the six directions. It will be good for the present life and good in later lives. It will be the source for this in the present life and in later lives. In the present, one will be praised by the wise and gain this one worldly reward: When one's body breaks up and life ends, one will be reborn in a good place.

Defects of drinking
Go on. I'm listening. I only imbibe to drink the pain away. You got a better way?
.
Wine, women, and song! Why stop now?
“Sujata, know that drinking alcohol has six defects: 1. loss of wealth, 2. becoming ill, 3. fighting, 4. circulation of a bad reputation, 5. sudden outbursts of anger, and 6. a daily loss in wisdom. Sujata, if they drink alcohol, their family and property with decrease day by day. ...

Then Sujata exclaimed: “...The Buddha is a Wayfarer (Tathāgata), Luminary (Arhat), and a Supremely Awakened One, so he is able to reveal to the world clear instructions. Now, I go for guidance to the Buddha, go for guidance to the Dharma, and go for guidance to the Saṅgha.

How will I ever be able to stop?
“Blessed One, please permit me to become a lay follower in the true Teaching! Starting today, I will avoid killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and drinking alcohol for the rest of my life.”

Having heard what the Buddha taught, Sujata rejoiced and approved of it.

Jewish Adam Sandler as Homer Simpson?

I thought about going Buddhist like Lisa, but Richard Gere is busy and can't play me.
Pres. Lisa: My spiritual choices served me well as a feminist, moralist, academic, vegetarian.
.
Dad, what have you done to this family?
The Simpsons
has always been animated, and now a concept trailer has provided look at how a live-action movie adaptation might appear.

Created with the assistance of deadly AI technology, this "concept trailer" assembles a star-studded cast to imagine the film, including dumb comedy icon Adam Sandler as the Simpson family patriarch.

The trailer was posted to YouTube by Multiverse of AI. It features narration with Adam Sandler's voice as generated by AI, with the actor imagined to be introducing the rest of his family as [an unfunny version of] Homer Simpson.

Other cast members featured in the video include Kristen Wiig as Marge Simpson, Jacob Tremblay as Bart Simpson, and Mckenna Grace as Lisa Simpson. The full trailer is right is seen above.

Not a bald, beer-guzzling, Springfield WASP?
Along with the family, the concept trailer imagines several other characters from Springfield in live-action (rather than cartoon animated) from with big-name actors in the roles. This includes Will Ferrell as Ned Flanders, Simon Pegg as Lenny Leonard, Jordan Peele as Carl Carlson, Steve Buscemi as Mr. Burns, Neil Patrick Harris as gay Smithers, Ben Stiller as Moe, John C. Reilly as Barney Gumble, Zach Galifianakis as Chief Clancy Wiggum, Steve Carell as Principal Seymour Skinner, Kumail Nanjiani as Apu, Gaten Matarazzo as Milhouse Van Houten, Danny McBride as Otto Mann, Bill Hader as Reverend Lovejoy, and Keegan Michael Key as Dr. Julius Hibbert.

Will a live-action Simpsons movie ever happen?

The Simpsons movie sequel will be animated not live
In reality, there are no known plans at this time to take the franchise into live-action territory because the animated series is still running strong. [And anyway, Adam Sandler is trying to make a Happy Gilmore sequel and has his hands full not to disappoint the world.]

The show's 36th season will be debuting on FOX this fall, as the series remains just as popular as it has ever been.

It is also possible that a second animated feature film could end up happening soon, as it was teased prior to the release of Inside Out 2 that the Disney and Pixar movie's potential success could help get The Simpsons Movie 2 greenlit.

Inside Out 2 has since become the highest-grossing animated movie of all time. [So Hollywood is converting its whole operation to copying that success with as many knockoffs as possible...until they stop being profitable.] More: Adam Sandler is Homer Simpson in The Simpsons live-action movie concept trailer (MSN)
