Sexy violent TV; Are Americans dumb?

Top 10 hottest 'Get Smart' girls
(Hughesovski) After a lot of feedback, it was decided to do an update. Feel it's important to keep the original Top 10 with some honorable mentions. Thanks. Anyone who remembers Captain Gadget probably doesn't know that the Saturday morning cartoon was based on the violent comedy stylings of Control's Agent 86 Maxwell Smart on Get Smart in a Cold War back-and-forth with Kaos. RIP: Lynn Borden (1937-2015), Angelique Pettyjohn (1943-1992), Lyn Peters (1941-2013), Karen Steele (1931-1988).

How America got so st*pid
(BritMonkey) Why American culture became everything, everywhere, all at once -- it's called hegemony.
Wisdom Quarterly hits another million views
.
The world has four problems and just four. What are they? They are greed, hatred/fear, and delusion. In the hopes of reducing delusion -- manifesting as wrong views, ignorance, nescience, and foolishness -- we work at Wisdom Quarterly.

Does it help? Who knows? It may be making things worse. But if a person becomes interested in the Dharma, then that is our dhamma-dana and it's the best medicine, sometimes slow to show its good effects from not being practiced enough. When practiced, then it is of immediate effect.

For instance, what is the cure for confusion and delusion? It is mindfulness (sati). The moment one remembers to be mindful, confusion stops. When hate or fear (dosa or bhava, aversion, annoyance, anger, animosity, revulsion) arises, the immediate cure is agape (metta, loving-kindness, compassion/wish to alleviate, nonharming). When greed (lobha, attraction, liking, lust, grasping, clinging) arises, the immediate cure is letting go (nekkhamma, which can be done by looking on mindfully at the thing until its true nature reveals itself, e.g., the repulsive or asubha nature of the body, the downside, the danger, the hook in the lure, the unsatisfactory and disappointing or inability for things we chase after to ever fulfill us).

Every additional million views, we show a kind a photo. It's dumb, it's juvenile, but we do it. This million came quickly while in the midst of the greatest month of views ever, thousands more than a quarter million. Among Buddhist websites, that must be something, right?

Largest Day of the Dead contest in CA

San Pedro Día de Los Muertos Festival to Host Largest Catrina Contest with Royal Caribbean Cruise for 10 as Grand Prize

Hey, Everybody, look at me! I'm a white doll!
National Latino Heritage Month continues, and Ashley has a question: Is it "cultural appropriation" to dress up for Dia de los Muertos? We think not, but in these sensitive times; anyone can get offended by anything.

Ashley's Oktoberfest cultural appropriation ;)
It seems a male can become a female just for saying so, but NAACP leader Rachel Dolezal gets her backside handed to her on a platter for convincingly changing races or going biracial, even though she is an ally, has Black kids, a Black husband, and good intentions. When she decides to become a man, we're sure she'll be welcomed, celebrated, and encouraged to do drag. Let's look in and see how Ashley's doing on her journey of cultural exploration. Hooray!
A Frat Boy's Freedom to Offend (Prager U at UCLA and on Olvera St.)

We're living in Los Angeles (LA, "Latin America"), or the Rust Belt City of Chicago (Chi Town), so it's time to get with it. El Dia de Los Muertos or The Day of the Dead is an important adjunct to our European Halloween and Samhain (because Obon has already past). It's autumn, the fall season, and with the change of weather and amount of daylight, so goes the mood of the city. It's time to get cozy inside with lots of light because outside, The Dead are coming. These are our ancestors, and appeasing them is a nice thing, wholesome karma.
  • Buddhists can "transfer merit" to them in temple celebrations in both traditions, the older or back-to-basics Theravada and the populist later-development Mahayana or Hinduism-light.
  • The Dead are not altogether gone, just phase-shifted out of easy reach, but contact is still possible due to the strangeness of the universe and separation of dimensions and 31 Planes. Beings go on to be reborn when they pass from here. Where do they go? That utterly depends on their karma (store of deeds, not just from this life but from countless past lives), and we can contribute to their karma by helping them.
  • It's like offering medicine to the sick: Some would get better with or without it, some will pass even if they get it, and there is a third group who will only survive if they get it. Is it good to give it?
  • In all three cases, it's good to offer it. Let them decide what they need, which they will invariably do by their response (which is their karma).
  • Here the "medicine" is not a dangerous allopathic toxic created by sorcerers (Big Pharma) with lots of side effects. It's not even natural plant-based medicine, which can be strong. This medicine is karma (intentional action).
  • If sad at the airport and one is offered a flower (by say a hairy Krishna devotee), what can one do? Slap it away in annoyance, accept it and acknowledge the offer in gratitude while politely declining, accept it and eat it then spit it back out and hand it back when charged a "donation" (by their crafty employment of the sociopsychological basis of power known as reciprocation), take it and pay up, take it and tell them to naff off for demanding money... There are so many ways we might respond.
  • We are like the sick patient being offered something. How we respond (our intentionally chosen response) or react (our practiced and habitually reaction) is our karma.
  • But if it is offered in kindness with nothing expected in return, it can be quite a balm, a salve, a medicinal. It might be calendula, in which case not only is it bright and yellow, it is also medicinal when prepared as a tincture.
It's not just Hollywood Forever. It's all of LA
So this is LA, the Day of the Dead is coming, and here's a chance to participate. The contest has many prizes. Be a Catrina, a painted doll, for the celebration.

We were surprised to learn that Catrinas are not Goth ghosts, not "The Dead," haints, ghouls, spirits. They were originally Indigenous mockeries of Hispanics who dressed up and tried to pass for pure Spanish. "Oh, look at me; I'm so elegant and fashionable with my white powder face!" We were all mixed, Mestizos and Mixtecs.

Hollywood Forever | Cultural Events | Films
The Indigenous dressed up in elegant Euro garb to mock the half-white beauty queens and princes trying to pass as white to emphasize their mixed blood affiliation (the result of rape, coercion, and mostly enticement) with the Conquistadors and settler colonialists who had ruined the New World by their genocide, occupation, and hegemonic influence.

But what's one to do? The Europeans introduced a complex form of racism and colorism that is still rocking Latin America. Spain went so far as to define 16 groups or "castes" (casta) one would be labelled in a classification system as from the Mulatto to the Negro, from the Indio to the pure Gringo or Spanish (100% purebred Iberian Peninsula European).

What "caste" or casta are you? It determines your future?

Thank you, CIA, which makes all things possible. After Mike's amazing oratory at the DNC, the New York Times thought it was a good idea to post an article all about what s/he was wearing, a weird outfit to mask Mike's massive shoulders and height, emphasizing his long wig and big teeth, guiding casual viewers away from the obvious and in-your-face fact that one is looking at a man in a man's body pretending to be demure, diminutive, and even girly. Hormone treatments are amazing on the human body, showing how flexible our phenotypical features can become regardless of our genotype. But why would the NYT be sexist and insensitive with so powerful a person? Why promote gender stereotypes. His/her speech was the amazing thing, now what s/he wore when reading it.

Why are pageant queens resigning? Miss USA controversy explained
In the span of a week, three women who won titles within the Miss USA organization last year have stepped away from their crowns.

Noelia Voigt, the 24-year-old former Miss USA 2023, announced her resignation on Instagram May 6.

Noelia Voight, 24, quit being Miss USA
She wrote that she was [being silenced and] choosing to focus on her mental health.

Within days, former Miss USA Teen 2023 UmaSofia Srivastava, 17, and former Miss Colorado USA 2023 Arianna Lemus, 26, both stepped down, as well.

Miss Universe Organization owns Miss USA and Miss USA Teen. The organization shared similar messages after Voight and Srivastava’s resignations, thanking them for their “service,” and that it “respects and supports” the pageant queen’s decision.

The organization did not comment on Lemus’ resignation.

New Miss USA S. Gankiewicz
Savannah Gankiewicz, former Miss Hawaii USA and first runner-up in the 2023 Miss USA competition, took over Voigt’s position, but said she stands in solidarity with the initial winner.

Stephanie Skinner, former Miss Teen New York and runner-up for Miss USA Teen 2023, declined the title because she didn’t want to “give up (her) character,” she revealed to People. Read on for more on the string of resignations. More

Miss Hawaii crowned Miss USA today

Noelia Voight cried when she was crowned the most beautiful in competition in 2023.
.
Miss USA Noelia Voight was silenced and quit.
Today (Wednesday, May 15, 2024), Miss Hawaii Savannah Gankiewicz was crowned the new Miss USA.

Gankiewicz took over as beauty queen after former Miss USA 2023 Noelia Voigt announced she was resigning on May 6, 2024.

Gankiewicz is a model and entrepreneur, and she is opening a boutique hotel in Bali in 2025.

Noelia Voigt was crowned Miss USA in Sept. 2023 in a moment full of celebratory tears and confetti, but on May 6, Voigt stepped down, citing [that she was being silenced, which is being called an issue of] her mental health and spearheading a slew of high-profile resignations within the Miss USA organization.

On May 9, the organization announced Miss Hawaii Savannah Gankiewicz will be taking over as Miss USA for the remainder of Voigt's tenure.

Miss USA Savannah G.
Gankiewicz, 28, will be crowned in a ceremony in Hawaii on today, marking the official start of her reign.
  • Gankiewicz was the first runner-up in the 2023 Miss USA pageant, and she won the costume contest.
  • Gankiewicz competed in the Miss USA pageant after being crowned Miss Hawaii in January 2023.
  • She was first runner-up in the competition, coming in just behind Voigt.
  • She also won best interview in the pageant and best costume in the state costume contest.
  • Beauty Queen Voight quits her 'Miss USA' crown

I am a burning hot Maui banyan tree.
For her costume, Gankiewicz wore a sparkly jumpsuit to honor a 150-year-old banyan tree that was burned during last year's [very suspicious] Maui wildfires.

A headpiece covered in greenery attached to the ensemble, and swaths of yellow fabric and handpieces designed to look like flames made her look like moving fire.

"This experience has enabled me to have a newfound appreciation and respect for the competition, as I've firsthand been through a transformative journey and experienced amazing growth," Gankiewicz wrote on Instagram of her experience in the pageant.

"I cannot wait to embark on my next journey as I close this chapter."

The Miss Hawaii winner took over as Miss USA after Noelia Voigt resigned as queen
Voigt announced her resignation via Instagram [where she encoded her message "I AM SILENCED"], pointing to her [cover story of] mental health as the reason she was stepping back.
  • Meet Miss USA: Noelia Voigt will compete at Miss Universe on Saturday.
  • Voigt, who began competing in pageants at 16, won Miss USA while representing Utah.
  • The new Miss Universe will be crowned by R'Bonney Gabriel, the ninth American to win the pageant.
  • Voigt, 24, is a seasoned pageant queen who began competing when she was 16. But her road to Miss USA wasn't an easy one. Miss USA 2023 Noelia Voigt had hopes of becoming the 10th American woman to win Miss Universe.
