At UC Berkeley, my roommate Nathaniel and I used to mull over the Big Questions -- rebirth, telepathy, PSI, ultimate reality, physics, infinity, the nature of space, psychic powers, black holes, UFOs, the meaning of life, the futility of death, and the importance of birth control, in addition to debating whether reading fiction (like The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) could serve any practical function. Those were the salad days, under a powerful red light in a half-mannequin lamp in otherwise very hippie digs, there was no question we would not tackle. I came at things from mysticism, literature and psychology, whereas he was the numbers man, practical engineer, and theoretical physicist.

He loved sports, I loved music. He did homework (problem sets) with all his free time, and I meditated at the Berkeley Zen Center and more or less gazed at my navel the rest of the time. He was much smarter, but I got better grades. We were in school to be schooled and went on to grad school to continue the cat and mouse, chasing GPAs and glory of a most trivial and nerdy sort. Because what college really gives a person of privilege is the leisure to think, philosophize, question, debate, foster intellectual creativity, and expand. How sad that so many people spend it drinking or doing all the things they missed out in high school from having to study so much to get into a place like Cal, Harvard, Stanford, UCLA, or Yale in the first place. We were sober for our discussions.

If only I had done more math, if only he had taken a real philosophy class (instead of accidentally landing himself in a course on logic), what might have been? We'd be two doctors having this debate:

• Here it is. I say pi (π, 3.14159...) is stupid because it is, as you say, "irrational." I want it to be rational rather than go on forever. And I think I thought up a way to do it.

• Get it to end, get it to be rational, get it to divide cleanly (without remainder), get all the measurements in order, from say a perspicacious, anal, or OCD drive in me to make better pyramids, architecture, and other low-to-no margin of error constructions by making the calculations in the blueprints better.

• They'll be better in that they come out without infinite remainders of trailing digits beyond the decimal point.

• This has never been about a need. This is pure science with no (apparent) application, research for its own sake, and you're just the man to do. Take this back to your professors and put it to them. They may see the wisdom of such a pursuit in building, calculating, and approaching the verities of life in a perfect simulation/world.
• Pi can'ts bee evenly divided; it stays irrational.
• I know. But I have a way to evenly divide it and make it rational, that is, to turn it from an odd number to an even number.
• Ain't gonna happen, Bruh.
• That's what the purpose of this thought experiment is! I'm going to make it happen. See if you don't agree, as my mind is not bogged down with all the math knowledge, rules acceptance, and numerical assumptions you labor under, I think I'm onto something. It's very easy in theory. How it would be proven, that I leave up to you. I'm the visionary madman making a creature. You are a white lab coat wearing functionary in this thought lab.
• STEP 1: Switch from Base 10 to another base, such as Base 11 (or 13, 22, 7, 28, 60, 364, or 365). We'll start with those first.
• STEP 2: Calculate pi. I bet it will break even without all those digits after the decimal.
• Aww, ai don't think it'll work, Dawg, ai'ight?
• STEP 3: Keep plugging in different bases until it does work.
• Whut's da use? If it ain't workin, how's swtichin gonna work it?
• I suggest we try Base 11.5 or Base 5. Then Base 10.66 or 10.67. See Base 10 is even, and I think that's the fundamental problem, so let's switch to an odd base.

• Yes, something that is not even like 10.

• I know. And I need you to prove it. Otherwise, I'm going to have to resort to Mathletics, AI, Chat GPT, Grok, and other demonic entities to work it out. And you know they can't, for all they can do is tell me what a genius I am and how I just invented a new math system, and all that other back patting and feelgood replying they do to sincere saps who resort to such compliments when, in fact, they need pushback.
• I ain't sure Texas Instruments calculators can handle this job cuz, internally, they might be juzz as jacked as math books in publik schoolz, ya hear?

Wisdom Quarterly hits another million views

The world has four problems and just four. What are they? They are greed, hatred/fear, and delusion. In the hopes of reducing delusion -- manifesting as wrong views, ignorance, nescience, and foolishness -- we work at Wisdom Quarterly.

Does it help? Who knows? It may be making things worse. But if a person becomes interested in the Dharma, then that is our dhamma-dana and it's the best medicine, sometimes slow to show its good effects from not being practiced enough. When practiced, then it is of immediate effect.

For instance, what is the cure for confusion and delusion? It is mindfulness (sati). The moment one remembers to be mindful, confusion stops. When hate or fear (dosa or bhava, aversion, annoyance, anger, animosity, revulsion) arises, the immediate cure is agape (metta, loving-kindness, compassion/wish to alleviate, nonharming). When greed (lobha, attraction, liking, lust, grasping, clinging) arises, the immediate cure is letting go (nekkhamma, which can be done by looking on mindfully at the thing until its true nature reveals itself, e.g., the repulsive or asubha nature of the body, the downside, the danger, the hook in the lure, the unsatisfactory and disappointing or inability for things we chase after to ever fulfill us).

The eighth-largest jackpot in U.S. lottery history — $1.3 billion — is at stake in Saturday evening’s multi-state Powerball drawing.

However, the drawing has been delayed. [Hmm, just like the time the lotto scammed us in Altadena, California, where one many bought a ticket and another man became a billionaire being sued by the first man and there was a very mysterious delay lied about by officials.]

The Multi-State Lottery Association, which conducts the game, issued the following statement:

“The Powerball drawing scheduled for 10:59 pm ET on Saturday, April 6 has been delayed.

“Tonight, we have one participating lottery [Is it California, home of the most winners, by any chance?] that needs additional time to complete required pre-draw procedures, which have been enacted to protect the security and integrity of the Powerball game.

Powerball draw for $1.3 billion jackpot delayed

There have been 40 drawings since January 1, 2024, the last time a ticket with all six numbers was [chosen by someone and] sold, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association.

Saturday’s drawing was initially scheduled to take place at 7:59 pm. Tickets sold after 7:05 pm were ineligible for the night’s draw, but are eligible for the following drawing.

In its announcement Friday that the estimated jackpot had grown to $1.3 billion from the previous estimate of $1.23 billion because of strong ticket sales across the nation coupled with a boost in interest rates used to fund the annuitized prize, the Multi-State Lottery Association also sought to debunk what it called top misconceptions about whether players can gain an edge to winning the Powerball jackpot.

One misconception is that Powerball jackpot-winning tickets are only sold in big cities and states. Powerball was designed to be a random game with every ticket having the same possibility of matching the winning numbers drawn, the association said.

The number of winning tickets in a location directly correlates to the volume of ticket sales. Typically, there are more winning tickets in cities because they have higher ticket sales compared to rural areas, and therefore, more winners based upon sales volume.

The odds of matching all five numbers and the Powerball number are 1 in 292.2 million, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association. The overall chance of winning a prize is 1 in 24.9.

The jackpot for Saturday’s drawing is the fourth largest in the history of the Powerball game, which began in 1992. There have been four larger jackpots for the Mega Millions game, which began in 1996 as The Big Game and was given the new name Mega Millions in 2002.

In Reliving Past Lives, psychologist Dr. Helen Wambach, PhD, shares the fascinating results of her scientific, large-scale past life group hypnotherapy regression (and progression) sessions.

In an effort to rule out false memories, fantasies, and wishful thinking often hurled by critics of past life hypnosis (regression therapy), Dr. Wambach devised a protocol:

She chose time-specific periods from 2000 BCE to the 20th century and asked respondents where they were and what they were doing during that specific period. She did not ask what they were but rather mundane details about their appearance, activities, and so on that could be researched and verified.

(dfirth224) Dr. Wambach (John F. Kennedy University faculty member) was a psychologist who pioneered scientific research on the phenomenon of reincarnation (rebirth) in the 1970s using hypnotic regression. She approached her study as a social science as no one had thought to do before.

Shoes, race, social class, occupations, types of money used, means of death, and gender were all explored. Mundane questions that would be nearly impossible for any ordinary person to know were asked such as:

• “What types of utensils are being used?”
• “Describe weaving techniques that are being used.”
• “What foodstuffs are commonly in use during this time?”
• “What color is the brickwork of the houses?”

As theorized, when taken to a very specific period some respondents reported their experiences, while others reported nothing. If they were "making it up," all would report something. This prompted the question, Did they report nothing because they were between lives?

Dr. Wambach reasoned that if she asked a very large number of subjects questions about a specific time and place and received a sizable percentage of similar answers from those subjects who were not in contact, aware of one another, nor aware of the information they were reporting, that was information that could be objectively (scientifically) validated.

This kind of data is worth investigating further. Together with her book Life Before Life, the data is compelling reading for anyone pondering the objective validity of rebirth/reincarnation and life beyond physical death.

• Dr. Wambach's goal was not to validate whether one person's experience was real or not. The goal of this largescale research was to scientifically evaluate whether or not large numbers of respondents would get the details correct, thereby validating that this is a real phenomenon.
• For example, most people think that dying by fire means burning to death. So one may ask a regressed person reliving (remembering) a past life, How did you die? If that person answers, "I died in a fire." Then ask, "What killed you?" Most of us in that circumstance would say the flames. But science shows that most people in fires do not die of the fire but rather the smoke. They die of asphyxiation.
• These subjects reported, to their surprise, that it was the smoke, which is not something most would know. If they were making it up or confabulating, imagining what it must have been, they would say it was the fire that burned them to death. In another example, if asked, "Look down. What kind of shoes are you wearing?"
• Almost no one could tell what kind of shoes were common in a given place in a given time period, say in Medieval Europe or Ancient Egypt. But if many respondents give the same answer, this answer can be validated or disproven by referencing modern archeological evidence. Research results are not common knowledge.
• If respondents were not reliving actual past lives, how could they individually come up with correct answers? Not one or two people, but thousands of subjects formed the data presented in this book over many years, over many trials, covering many past life regressions and future life progressions.
