Black Rock City 2026 rises in the Nevada desert from August 30 to September 7th, 2026. Theme: Axis Mundi.

Will the free Orgy Dome be back this year?
The Axis Mundi celebrates our interconnectedness, our shared social realities, and our ties to this natural world. Final ticket sales for Burning Man 2026 are open now. No registration is required. Buy tickets now through Black Rock City Tickets or subscribe for fresh Black Rock City updates.

Black Rock City is ephemeral. Every year is beautifully unique. The massive desert city rises for just eight days then disappears without a trace (well, some trace but there is a zero-footprint ethos the festival tries to live by, even if not all participants keep to it).

Himalayan-like floods hit Grand Canyon

(Arizona's Family (3TV / CBS 5)) Grand Canyon flash flood: breaking down the storm, burn scar, and safety impacts
(Robyn Adele Anderson) Jazz cover of this disaster: Megadeth's "Symphony of Destruction"

First Hawaii, then Nepal and Tibet in the Himalayas, and now Utah is swelling, and Arizona's Grand Canyon is getting wiped out as torrential floods sweep through in a symphony of destruction over the weekend, as wildfires burn in California and Texas.

Grand Canyon secrets exposed*
On Saturday, August 29, 2026, at approximately 2:30 pm (MST), a major flash flood surged through Bright Angel Creek inside Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona.

The flood killed at least 1, while about 15 are reported missing, and 62 have been rescued.

In 2025, the Dragon Bravo Fire destroyed vegetation on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and had dried the land into an impermeable, clay-like surface incapable of absorbing water.

The flood occurred during a convergence of various environmental conditions, including the Arizona monsoon, Super El NiƱo, a marine heatwave, Tropical Storm Iselle, and a heat dome pulling storms eastward, resulting in atmospheric moisture levels being 5-15% higher than average.
How will evidence of giants in U.S. survive?
Hours before the flood, two smaller storm systems and several rounds of rain moved into the North Rim, with rains of up to 1 inch per hour being observed [1]. At the time of the flood, the downpour had intensified to two-thirds of an inch in a quarter of an hour [2].

The heavy rainfall combined with the steep, rocky canyon terrain caused water to funnel down into the narrow Bright Angel Creek [3], water levels rising to over 5 feet in within 10 minutes [2].

Tourists in the area variously described witnessing heavy rainfall, the creek rapidly overflowing, cascading waterfalls, 15-foot-tall floodwaters, and buildings and vehicles being washed away.

The flood also incited several secondary hazards including rockfalls, landslides, and mudslides [3, 4, 5]. More

Forbidden History Revealed (GenSix Prods)
*For the first time in history, here is an eyewitness account to the fact that Egyptian-style artifacts and giant skeletons were pulled out of the Grand Canyon in Arizona and stored in secret, underground Smithsonian warehouses. This investigative documentary by Steve Quayle (no relation to VP Dan Quayle) explores the following:
  • Why are the landforms in the Grand Canyon named after Egyptian deities?
  • Why are DNA samples from giant mummies and skeletons being extracted by the militaries of the world?
  • Was a live 21-foot giant captured in 1877 with the most unusual features ever noted?
  • Will the giants of yesteryear become the "super soldiers" of tomorrow?
This is yet another great Smithsonian cover up. Forbidden History Revealed, Ep. 1 (DVD)

Vassa: What is Buddhist Rains Retreat?

What is the Buddhist Rainy Season or Rains Retreat (Vassa)? What is the Rains Retreat or "Buddhist Lent"? Understanding the Vassa and Kaį¹hina ceremonies
Each year, Theravāda Buddhist monastics all over the world make a determination to stay in a single monastery for a three-month period of the Rainy Season also known as the Vassa, the Rains Retreat. This year it begins July 10th.

One will hear the term “Vassa” often in this article, so please bear it in mind. Traditionally, it starts the day after the Full Moon Day in July or the day after the Āsāḷha full moon as it is known in the Pāḷi language.

If monks move around a lot and one needs to rely on a teacher, one can at least expect monks to stay at a single monastery for a full three months without moving around. Some make determinations to practice harder, while others who already follow a steady practice simply continue their daily routine as usual.

In this article, let's look at the origins of Vassa, the different types, the allowances to leave the Vassa on business or emergencies, if it affects the age of a monastic, and what happens at the end of the Vassa.

The Origins of Vassa
During the Buddha’s time, monastics (samanas or "wandering ascetics") wandered on foot between different monasteries (viharas), forests, groves, and villages. They would wander during all times of the year, even during the period or season of heavy rains. However, laypeople—especially farmers—began to complain:

“How can the Sakyan [Scythian, Saka, Shakyian] monastics go wandering in the winter, in the summer, and even during the rainy season? They’re trampling down the green grass shoots, oppressing one-sensed living being, and destroying many small creatures. Even the monastics of other doctrines (religions), with their flawed (imperfect) teachings, settle down for the rainy season. Even birds make a nest in the top of a tree and settle down for the rainy season. But not so the Sakyan monastics.”

Out of compassion and to match the culture of the time, the Buddha responded with a new instruction: Anujānāmi, bhikkhave, vassaṁ upagantun'ti. “I allow you, monastics, to enter the rains residence.”*

This rule brought the monastics the Rains Retreat period of three months that met the expectations of the lay communities during the time of the Buddha. It now inspires the practice and striving of monastics, as it has for generations, all the way to the present. Moreover, it inspires laypeople in the present.

Two Kinds of Vassa
The Buddha allowed for two entry points into the Rains Residence: Dvemā, bhikkhave, vassÅ«panāyikā: purimikā ca pacchimikā ca: “There are two entries, the earlier and the later.” Purimikā (First Vassa) begins the day after the Āsāḷha full moon. Pacchimikā (Second Vassa) begins one month later.

Sometimes referred to as “Second Vassa.” This allowance for two Vassas shows the Buddha’s practical wisdom and compassion because not everything goes right the first time, as will be discussed later. It should be noted that the determination to stay in one monastery for three months is actually the day after the full moon day. This is when the new month starts.

Although most monasteries have the Vassa ceremony on the full moon day and it is a time for a large gathering, that is just for laypeople because they have that day off. Monastics really make the official determination the next day. Most of laypeople will probably never know it really happens on the next day.

Leaving during Vassa: seven-day business rule
Monastics are expected to remain in their Vassa location for the full three months. However, issues may come up where a monastic needs to leave. The Buddha allowed what is called, Sattāhakaraṇīya or “seven-day business.” Some of the many valid reasons include: More

Miracle survival in Texas floods (sutra)

Sutra: Not Being Swept Away
Kappa-manava-puccha: Kappa's Question, based on Ven. Thanissaro's translation
Birds eye view of a safe refuge from the flood of stormy ocean, a tropical island (craiyon.com)
.
[Kappa asked the Buddha this question:]
For one stranded in the middle of the water,
in the flood of great danger called rebirth,
overwhelmed by aging and death,
Tell me, dear sir,
and show me the safe island
so that this may not happen again.

[The Buddha replied:]
For one stranded in the middle of the water
in the flood of great danger called rebirth,
overwhelmed by aging [rebirth] and death,
I will tell you the island, Kappa.

Having nothing,
clinging to no thing:
That is the island,
there is no other.
That refuge is nirvana, I declare,
the complete elimination of [rebirth] aging and death.

Those knowing this, mindful,
fully awakened
present here and now,
no longer bound as Mara's* slaves,
no longer come under Mara's influence.
  • *Mara is the personification of Death, a literal being, an Asura (Titan) and high-born deva (being of light like Lucifer) in a Sensual Sphere heaven, often used figuratively to refer to four types of Mara.

SUTRA: Everything is swept away
Ratthapala Sutta (MN 82, PTS: M ii 54)
Maitreya Buddha arises as a Central Asian king
King Koravya sat down on a prepared seat. Sitting there, he said to [the Buddhist monk] Ven. Ratthapala, "There are situations where, having suffered the four kinds of loss, people shave off their hair, don saffron robes, and go forth from home life into the left-home life [of a monastic].

"What are the four? There is loss as a result of aging, loss as a result of sickness, loss of wealth, and loss of relatives...

"However, Ven. Ratthapala has suffered none of these. So what did he know, see, or hear that he was motivated to go forth from the home life into the left-home life?"

"Great king, there are four summaries of the Dhamma (the Teaching) stated by the Blessed One [the Buddha] who directly knows and sees, the Worthy One, who rightly awakened. Having known and seen and heard them, I set forth from the home life into the left-home life. What are these four?
  1. "'The world [8] is swept away and does not endure' -- this is the first summary of the Dhamma...
  2. "'The world is without shelter (permanent refuge) and without protector' -- this is the second...
  3. "'The world is [utterly impersonal] without owner. One has to pass on, leaving everything behind' -- this is the third...
  4. "'The world is insufficient, insatiable, a slave to craving' -- this is the fourth...
"These, great king, are the four summaries of the Dhamma stated by the Blessed One who directly knows and sees, the Worthy One, rightly awakened. Having known and seen and heard them, I set forth from the home life into the left-home life."

Sometimes the flash flood comes in the night.
"Ven. Ratthapala, you say, 'The world is swept away and does not endure.' How is the meaning of this statement to be understood?"

"Let me ask what you think, great king. When you were 20 or 25 years old — an expert elephant rider, expert horseman, expert charioteer, expert archer, expert swordsman — were you strong in arm and thigh, fit and seasoned for warfare?"

"Yes, Ven. Ratthapala... I was strong... It was as if I had supernormal power. I do not see anyone who was my equal in strength."

Guadalupe River (Texas) Wikipedia map
"What do you think, great king? Are you now as strong...?"

"Not at all, Ven. Ratthapala. Now I am a feeble old man, aged, advanced in years, having come to the last stage of life, 80 years old. Thinking, 'I will place my foot here,' I place it somewhere else."

"Referring to this, great king, the Blessed One who knows and sees, the Worthy One rightly awakened, said, 'The world is swept away and does not endure.'

"Having known and seen and heard this, I set forth from the home life into the left-home life."

"It is amazing, Ven. Ratthapala, it is astounding how well that has been said by the Blessed One who knows and sees, the Worthy One rightly awakened! 'The world is swept away and does not endure.' For the world really is swept away, Ven. Ratthapala, and does not endure. More

Dvejana Sutta: Two People (1)
Ven. Thanissaro (trans) edited by Dhr. Seven for Wisdom Quarterly

On one occasion the Blessed One was staying near the City of Savatthi in Jeta's Grove inside the multimillionaire's monastery.

Two Brahmins — feeble old men, aged, far advanced in years, having come to the last stage of life, 120 years old — went to the Blessed One, exchanged courteous greetings, sat respectfully to one side, and said:

"Master Gotama, we are Brahmins — feeble old men, aged, far advanced in years, having come to the last stage of life, 120 years old. We have done no wholesome deeds [accrued no merit, no profitable karma], no skillful deeds, no deeds that allay our fears. Teach us, Master Gotama, instruct us, Master Gotama, for our benefit and lasting happiness."

We're old kings. Right, Dad? - Shu up, Boy.
"Indeed, Brahmins, feeble old men, aged, far advanced in years, having come to the last stage of life, 120 years old, you have [accrued no merit because you have] done no wholesome deeds, no skillful deeds, no deeds that allay your fears. This world is swept away by aging, illness, and death.

"With the world [flooded and] swept away by aging, illness, and death, any restraint of body, speech, and mind practiced here will be one's shelter, safety, island, and refuge after death in the world beyond."

It is swept along, this life, with its next-to-nothing span.
For one swept on by aging, no shelters exist.
Keeping in sight this danger in death, do meritorious deeds that ripen in bliss.
Whoever here is restrained in body, speech, and mind, who makes merit while alive, that will be for future bliss after passing from here.
