Science 'films' HAPPINESS in brain

There's a chemical in dark chocolate (real Theobroma cacao) related to happiness and good sensations. It's also present in mary-jah-wanna, which probably explains why consumers get so clingy and attached to using the herbal substance. This naturally occurring chemical is called 
anandamide. Ananda, of course, is the name of the Buddha's closest friend and monastic attendant (likely his son with Mriga from before the birth of Rahula with his wife Yasodhara (aka Bimba Devi, according to some Buddhist schools). In Sanskrit and Pali anand means "bliss, joy, rapture." The suffix amide is added: In the usual nomenclature, one adds the term "amide" to the stem of the parent acid's name. For instance, the amide derived from acetic acid is named acetamide (CH3CONH2).
Now, one might be wondering, “What on earth is anandamide, and why should I care?” Well, pull up a chair and grab a square of dark chocolate, because we’re about to embark on a flavor-filled journey into the world of neuroscience and cocoa chemistry. Anandamide, derived from the Sanskrit word ananda, meaning “bliss or joy,” is a naturally occurring compound in our brains. It’s part of the endocannabinoid system, a complex network that helps regulate various bodily functions, including mood, appetite, and pain sensation. In essence, anandamide is the brain’s very own mood-enhancing, stress-busting superhero. But how does this marvelous molecule work its magic? Happiness is literally an inside job
, according to scientific materialism, which believes that we are nothing more than material constructs and that the miracle of consciousness is but an epiphenomenon following on the interaction of material objects like cells, chemicals, molecules, and ever smaller atom, electrons, and quarks.

Organized religion errs on the side of spiritualism, believing us to be a "soul," "spirit," or "magical subtlety." These three things are real, but they are not the self any more than consciousness is.

There is nama rupa, "name" (the instructions) and "form" (the carrying out of those instructions in the material sphere). But self (atta) is not that. How else could it be? If it not one, it has to be the other, unless it is both? It is both both and neither.

What we regard as "self" (soul, ego) is mind-and-body, but though mental and physical processes exist and are active, they do not amount to a concrete "self."

The "self" that exists is dependent, temporary, ephemeral subject to Three Characteristics of All Conditioned Things: they are impermanent, incapable of satiating/fulfilling, and are impersonal.

This last characteristic is the one that is impossible to believe, but it is the key to awakening/enlightenment in the Buddha's teaching.

We can see that all things are impermanent, in flux, constantly changing, undependable. We can see that we have never been fulfilled for long; we experience great pleasure but remain hungry, in many cases becoming more hungry for newer and better pleasures.

IF THERE IS NO SELF, WHAT IS THERE THEN? The Buddha answered this question in terms of Dependent Origination (paticca-samuppāda). And it is on account of not seeing this, not grasping, not penetrating this that we have wandered so long in this painful samsara.

Will we fall under the spell of scient-ism, run to religion for shelter, or begin to see what the Buddha was getting at when he encouraged us to strive for calm and liberating-insight?

"Science can prove what it says." Can it? It redefines "happiness" as an endorphin then shows a peptide "walking," and viola, nonmaterialistic Buddhism is wrong? That's how it might seem, but it is not the case. We must look more deeply. Science fails us. And coming and seeing and investigating what the Buddha taught liberates us. Try it.

Soldier karma: life with NO brain


Psychology of brain damage: shattered
How can we live in a world that makes no sense at all? How could we exist when every second of our lives is an unsolvable puzzle, and the tiny bits we do manage to recognize can’t come out?

That was the life of Russian soldier Lev Zasetsky (1920–1993), a young man who suffered a brain injury fighting in another useless war.

That was the life of Lev Zasetsky, who suffered a severe brain injury when thrown into World War II.

The 3,000-page diary he wrote following his injury became one of the most valuable and insightful texts on the study of the human brain in the history of biological science (popsci.com).

Zasetsky suffered from aphasia, a disorder or dysphasia that impairs a person’s ability to communicate or understand communication.

Zasetsky’s form of aphasia resulted in him being able to write without being able to read his own writing or understand all of what he had written.

Russian Dr. Alexander Luria, one of the Soviet Union’s most accomplished neuropsychologists, was assigned to care for Zasetsky and found that the young soldier “simply could not write and…had suddenly become illiterate.”

Dr. Luria pinpointed Zasetsky’s injury to “the second major block of the brain located in the posterior sections of the large hemispheres.”

This portion of the brain’s job is “for receiving, processing, and retaining information a person derives from the external world.”

The precise location of his shrapnel injury meant that “a very important function [had] been seriously impaired: he [could] not immediately combine his impressions into a coherent whole; his world [became] fragmented.”

That’s how the world existed for Lev Zasetsky: fragmented. But he didn’t give up. His fascinating story and undaunted attitude can inspire and reframe our modern understanding of psychology, history, language, communication, showing what the human spirit can accomplish.

The village headman Yodhajiva went to the Buddha, bowed, sat respectfully to one side, and said: "Venerable sir, I have heard it passed down through the ancient teaching lineage of warriors that:
  • 'When a warrior strives and exerts in battle, if others strike one down and slay one while striving and exerting in battle then, with the breakup of the body after death, one is reborn in the company of angels (devas) slain in battle.'
"What does the Blessed One say about that?"

"Enough, headman, set that question aside and do not ask it." But a second time and third time the headman Yodhajiva asked it.

"Headman, I seem to be unable to get past by saying, 'Enough, headman, set that question aside and do not ask it,' so to reply simply: When a warrior strives and exerts in battle, one's mind is already seized, debased, and misdirected by the thought, 'May those beings be struck down, slaughtered, destroyed, annihilated, and no longer exist.'

"If others then strike one down or slay one while one is striving and exerting in battle, then with the breakup of the body after death, one is reborn in a hell called the Realm of those Slain in Battle.

Oh no, what will come of ignorance and killing?
"Moreover, if one holds a view such as, 'When a warrior strives and exerts in battle, if others then strike one down or slay one while one is striving and exerting in battle, then with the breakup of the body after death, one is reborn in the company of angels slain in battle,' that is his wrong view.

"There are, I say, two destinations for a person with wrong view, either hell or the animal womb" [rebirth in one of the many hells or the super-diversified animal plane].

When this was said, the headman Yodhajiva began to sob and burst into tears.

"Headman, that is what I was unable to get by you by asking you to set that question aside and not ask it."

"But, venerable sir, I am not crying because of what the Blessed One said but rather because I have been deceived, cheated, and fooled for a long time by that ancient teaching lineage of warriors who said that" (SN 42.3).

Neuroscientists come up with new brain map

A comprehensive map of the brain's "dysfunctome" — the regions that become dysfunctional during various neurological conditions — has been created by neuroscientists for the first time.

The research offers hope for millions of patients, paving the way toward more tailored treatments based on specific dysfunctionality in certain areas of the brain.

Dysfunctionality in key brain areas can result in a range of debilitating conditions, including
  • Parkinson's disease [which is just due to the loss of myelin sheath of the nervous system, which is easily revered by Dr. Joel Wallach at criticalhealthnews.com, even in serious and advanced cases like famous Michael J. Fox if only he knew],
  • obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD),
  • dystonia (a movement disorder where the muscles contract involuntarily), and

Pictures are a poor way of looking for subtleties.
These disorders have a broad spectrum of different symptoms, from information processing and mood disorders to motor deficits.

But the one thing they all have in common is an underlying malfunction in brain circuitry.

Deep brain stimulation — that is, delivering an electric current directly to specific areas of the brain using small electrodes — can target these brain circuits and has been shown to alleviate symptoms for various conditions.


The brain is here, but the "mind" is elsewhere.

However, this treatment method is not always successful, and even small discrepancies in electrode placement can significantly dampen its efficacy.

Also, it is not always clear which brain circuits need to be stimulated to achieve optimal outcomes.

On emotional trauma and spiritual practice

All the world's a stage, so are we merely play pretending on it? Who is striving for egoless liberation? Is it me, you, us, or just a result of our clever social-survival mirror neurons mimicking spiritual practice?

I can tell you that for most of us — with all the best and most earnest intentions in the world — it is most likely the mirror neurons [unless Asperger's or an autism spectrum disorder has taken those neurons offline].

Therefore, as all the masters, gurus, and New Age teachers tell us, the ego is still running the show.

As if it is all theater, we dress up for the role. Arguably, this isn’t a big problem. Shakespeare did say, All the world’s a stage:

And all the men and women merely players.
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages.

Unwillingly to school.
And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad...


And so he plays his part.
The sixth age shifts

But the brain needs to learn how to function from the moment we begin using it, so it copies from its environment — any baby can prove this fact.

We have mirror neurons because our brain knows that we stand a better chance of survival if we are accepted by our social group, rather than rejected and left to die all alone in the cold wilderness or the dark and scary woods.

The more an act or practice is copied and performed, the more hardwired it becomes in our brain’s biology.

The follow up question is then, Who [or what, ask in the Five Aggregates clung to as self] are we beyond merely a simple composite of hardwiring learned from our environment?

While this is the case for many phenomena, it can’t explain some characteristics that appear to be inherited from our parents and that may have previously been absent from the offspring’s life.

Tiny, very personal character traits show through when babies can express reactions beyond those to which they have been exposed.

Beyond this, there are young children, often between 2.5–5 years old, who are able to talk about past lives in great and sometimes verifiable detail.

Clearly, there is something more than mere biology going on. Workshops and intensive meditation retreats are both beneficial and popular practices for helping to peel away layers of accrued hardwiring and ego-driven delusions.

However, being away from our young children while we choose to undertake long retreats can damage a child emotionally. This is an example of when a spiritual practice becomes selfish and led by ego desire, considering our own welfare before that of another.

[Of course, we're doing the child and the world a favor by working our ourselves, but they don't know it, so we may feel guilty and excessively question our own motives. It really can be a win-win endeavor, but we're shamed by our society not to automatically see it that way.]

Learn an engaged practice instead and make Buddhist mindful parenting an integral part of meditation.

Emotional damage is a significant contributor to how we function in the world — within ourselves and at a spiritual community level.

It is imperative, therefore, that we heal these traumas before moving forward, lest any attainments that we may accrue be built on shifting and unstable sands.

Scientists tell us that we live in a universe where more than 95 percent over everything around us is unknown and invisible and that our five-per-cent reality isn’t solid and isn’t even really real or here at all. Thanks, science.

It is a subject that fascinates me, that I research deeply, and about which I have written extensively. It feels profoundly important to understand and is of particular significance in meditation. I'm a French philosopher, what can I say?

And here is where my thoughts on reality become quite a challenge to comprehend as they are contrary to all that seems "real."

Based on a growing mountain of scientific evidence, I now imagine this five-per-cent reality to be the inverse of what we perceive it to be.

The implications of this would radically change the way we understand our relationship with the whole. However, we cannot bypass the emotional body in preference to escaping into a metaverse [or into another part of this multiverse]; that would be an ignorant foray into the spiritual realm. More

Can lab-grown brains have "consciousness"?

As our ability to create organs expands, ethical questions come into play
There are lots of reasons one might want to grow brains. For starters, they would allow humans to study human neurological issues in detail, which is otherwise quite challenging to do.

Neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s have devastated millions of people, and brains in a jar (so to speak) could allow us to study disease progression and test potential [herbs, interventions, and if worse comes to worst, toxic-allopathic] medications.
 
The prospect of a lab-grown brain is so compelling that the authors of an editorial in Nature published this week wrote:

“The promise of brain surrogates is such that abandoning them seems itself unethical, given the vast amount of human suffering caused by neurological and psychiatric disorders, and given that most therapies for these diseases developed in animal models fail to work in people.”
 
But there’s a problem. The closer we get to growing a full human brain, the more ethically risky it becomes....

Given how tantalizing -- and [potentially] genuinely beneficial -- the promise of lab-grown brains is, they [the writers of the editorial] write that we can almost be certain that we will, at some point, grow a whole brain. We’re far from that point.

All we can do now is grow clumps of brain cells -- but now is the time to consider the ethics. The authors advocate for careful consideration by lawmakers, bioethicists, researchers, and any other experts who’ll have a say.

And there’s one more group who should be thinking about these issues: all of us. Yes, us, the readers of this piece, should start rolling these ideas in our minds. We may not have the power to directly influence policy about brain research (or who knows, maybe we do), but these policies will be public policies.

They will influence the kind of research our government institutions are allowed to carry out. Our tax dollars will fund that research. Think about it now, before it matters.
 
The editorial itself raises a number of hugely important issues: How would you dispose of a living bit of brain? Who has ownership of the brain bits if the cells come from a donor? But non-neurologists tend to leap to one big question in particular: More

We might also ask the more provocative, Can robots ever have "consciousness"?

 
Unraveling Mind & Body thru Abhidhamma
The physical "seat of consciousness" is probably distributed. It is spread throughout our holographic body, with each cell and its DNA participating. But the Buddha and ancient texts were careful never to specify the exact location.

However, the commentary as embodied in the Abhidharma ("the Dharma in Ultimate Terms") does specify. That seat is in the area of the heart (hrdraya). Here resides what is called the "mind door."

If emerging from meditative-absorption (jhana, dhyana, zen, chan, seon, thien), which is temporarily purifying, one turns attention between the ears where the brain is, one will see nothing!

But if attention is redirected to the area just above the heart, one will see a green reflective surface that "mirrors" the mind. This is the mind door. Consciousness is seated here. It is really, according to at least one great living Buddhist master and enlightened scholar-monk, in the blood.

Now that's how a whole brain really looks!
Realizing that it is in the blood passing through this spot in the heart is crucial. Self-consciousness (one's own six senses) are not in one spot but in the interaction of one spot and the blood that pervades the entire body down into the marrow of the bones.

This understanding solves the obvious problem of logically deducing (from insufficient information) that if consciousness really resided in or around the heart, a heart transplant would cause a shift in consciousness. Which, of course, it partly does.

Not every memory comes over from the heart donor in a transplant, just some. (It could be supposed that a hand, face, or other organ transplant would have a similar though less powerful affect on a person's consciousness).

Where are neurons in the human body? We think the answer is in the brain, particularly the cortex and neocortex. But there are many, many neurons in the lining of the gut and in the heart. The whole human body is conscious. Why do brain scientists foolishly stick electrodes in living brains of conscious subjects and, with the stimulation of a vivid memory, jump to the false conclusion that all memories therefore reside in the brain?

Why in the world do they not take those same electrodes to the gut and heart, to the neurons in these locations, to see the exact same thing happen? The brain is important, almost as important as the spinal column. How big is the brain? The real answer is that it extends from the crown of the head to the base of the spine and the long nerves the emanate from the spinal column, the sciatic nerve and such.

Now, as to the question at hand, would organized brain cells in a jar have consciousness? Yes, probably, but not the sort of fully formed consciousness a whole body would have. Buddhism recognizes six general senses (and science now realizes there are many more than five such as proprioception, etc.), the sixth being mind.

A tactile sense reaction, like burning the hand, bypasses the brain. It goes from the hand to the spinal cord back to the hand to pull away, then the brain comes into consciousness about what just happened. Therefore, in a very real sense, there is "consciousness" in the body without the bulbous end of the brain at the top of the spinal cord or what we call "the brain."

The brain stem, the "reptilian brain," are all still the brain. And some suffering from microencephaly (little to no brain matter between the ears) can go about and graduate from college and never know. Our sense of "self" and our ability to be conscious is not fully brain-dependent. The brain is a part of it, not the whole story.

If a hand is grown in a jar and stimulated, it is likely to twitch. Is someone somewhere twitching? We don't even ask. Think of all those discarnate frog's legs in lab doing liminal and subliminal testing. Is any being feeling those electrical impulses and reflexive jerks? In a sense, yes. Where is that consciousness without a frog "brain"?

Maybe there are a few neurons around, or neuronal bodies, ganglia, synapses, "nerve wires," all of which play their part in our embodied consciousness. And when we die, when there's no working body (as measured by EEG and heart monitors), we are perfectly conscious and aware. Ask a NDE survivor. How did that happen?

"Consciousness" (cittas and cetasikas or "mind moments and the concomitants of consciousness") are interdependent with this body not fully dependent on it, for there are other more subtle bodies here unseen (astral, etc.), at least in seven sheaths of subtle bodies. And the subtle light-body of "spontaneously-born" (opapatika) beings, which is what we'll have from the first moment of death, has that interdependence on mind when this dense body no longer serves that function.

It's complicated, and we'll have to return to this topic when scientists announce that they've been growing brains and callously disposing of them for a long time just as they grown in vitro humans without telling anyone for the ethics firestorm it would ignite.
