What Uganda’s gold could mean for crypto

Blockchain has a future, Bitcoin likely does not.

Is gold becoming inflationary? Can Bitcoin replace it as a store of value due to [Bitcoin's artificial] scarcity and reliability? Are Uganda’s [gold] numbers implausible?

Questions arise. These are fraught times for the cryptocurrency and blockchain sector, so it isn’t surprising that industry proponents might seize upon any promising news to help charge flagging markets.

US e-cash: digital currency like cash without Fed

A Reuters' report out of Uganda last week about a massive gold ore discovery [worth $12+ trillion] supplied just this kind of fuel. What does the state of gold mining [on the continent of] Africa have to do with the price of global Bitcoin (BTC)? Quite a bit, potentially.

Bitcoin has periodically laid claim to being digital gold largely on the strength of its [artificially] strict 21 million supply limit, which makes it non-inflationary and a good store of value — in theory.

Gold, of course, is the store of value par excellence, with a limited supply and a solid track record that goes back millennia.

But if Uganda is sitting on 31 million metric tons of gold ore, as the government declared, might not that substantially boost the world’s gold supply? That in turn could lower the price of gold — and make it a less secure “store of value” generally.

Gold’s loss could be the cryptocurrency’s gain. Some drew encouragement from this notion. Microstrategies CEO Michael Saylor, for instance, posted a video on Twitter about the Ugandan discovery of “huge gold deposits,” which might net 320,158 metric tons of refined gold “valued at $12.8 trillion.”

As Saylor noted on June 17, 2022: “#Gold is plentiful. #Bitcoin is scarce," further telling CNBC: 

“Every commodity in the world has looked good in a hyperinflationary environment, but the dirty secret is you can make more oil, you can make more silver, you can make more gold…Bitcoin’s the only thing that looks like a commodity that is scarce and capped.”

But perhaps there is less here than meets the eye. The 320,158 metric tons of refined gold that the Ugandan mining ministry spokesman said could be produced from the new deposits in the country’s northeastern corner would far exceed the 200,000 metric tons in above-ground gold that exist in the entire world today.

One gold mining trade publication went so far as to suggest the Ugandan government may have been confusing metric tons with ounces in its projections. More

A friend told me that anthropologist Margaret Mead was once asked by a student what she considered the first sign of civilization for a culture.

The student expected her to talk about clay pots or grinding stones. But Mead said that the first sign of civilization was a thighbone (femur) that had broken and healed.

Hold on...I just gotta check something first.

Mead explained that in the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You can't run from danger, get to water to drink, or search for food… No animal survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal.

“A broken femur that has healed is evidence that someone has taken time to stay with the one who fell, has bound up the wound, has carried the person to safety and has tended the person through recovery. Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts,” Mead said.

What if I could get my own film festival?

Several of us Insight in Action teachers have been working with iACT (iact.ngo) for a few years, traveling to refugee camps in Eastern Chad in Africa, Greece, and Cameroon to teach mindfulness skills. 

Yesterday my friend Oumda Tarbosh, a community leader who literally saved thousands of lives during Darfur's genocide, sent the following message to everyone. It’s especially poignant knowing how little food they have: 

We start to see big changes in the community, and I have a hope that the situation is going to be good. Refugees are knowing more [about] health and hygiene. Yesterday, I was doing mindfulness. I closed my eyes and… I started seeing my beloved brothers and sisters, friends and parents [dying] around the world[.] I don't know even [their] names... and my mind was changed. After a certain moment, I cried so much and start my prayer. Yesterday, I didn't eat food, my friends. So I encourage all supporters, donors, refugee camp leaders [for] all we are doing for our communities. I have a hope, together as one, we will win! Thank you all.

If teens have been peddled to and become addicted and obsessed with social media, what are they really after? It used to be "being part of the group." Now it's all about money and FAME.

In a day and age obsessed with social media and spying technology, it's hard to picture life without them.

Is that good or bad or neither? According to Andrew Keen, author of the book Digital Vertigo: How Today's Online Social Revolution Is Dividing, Diminishing, and Disorienting Us, the Internet, and particularly social media, is changing society in a way that is worrisome. (Christians agree).
 

Keen has long been known for the position he has taken on the addictive Internet, claiming that it is having an adverse effect on society and people personally. After voicing this position in his book The Cult of Amateur, he has been given nicknames like the "Net's supreme cyber-grump" and the "Antichrist of the Silicon Valley."

Speaking to WebProNews he explains that, while he supports the Internet and social media, he is concerned that the public nature of the social age is resulting in "losing something essential about what it means to be human." 

(The National, Feb. 2014) How are teens being affected by social media? Research suggests the impact is emotional - bullying, obsession with money and fame (defined as likes), and sexting.

"One of the problems, I think, with social media is that it isn't very social. It's really just an aggregation of individuals," he says. As he explains, many of our actions on social networks aren't pro-social. The movements that have developed are not coherent, viable movements. For example, Occupy or the movements in the Middle East, are atomized and radically individualized not "social" movements. Most social networks, instead, represent "just an aggregation" of people.

To avoid a potential harmful impact, Keen says the Internet needs to become more civilized and habitable. He also suggests that government regulation regarding privacy protections against spying could help prevent the concerns from getting worse.
