Gandharan Buddhist Texts: Rhino Sutra

First statues of the Buddha
In the years following Alexander the Great’s conquest of the East, a series of empires rose up along the Silk Road. In what is now northern Pakistan, the civilizations in the region called ancient Gandhara became increasingly important centers for the development of Buddhism, reaching their apex under King Kaniska of the Kusanas (Kushan Empire) in the second century CE.

Gandhara has long been known for its Greek-Indian (Greco-Buddhist) synthesis in architecture and statuary, but until about 20 years ago, almost nothing was known about its Buddhist literature (Gandhāran Buddhist texts).

Buddhist Lit of Ancient Gandhara
The insights provided by manuscripts unearthed over the last few decades show that Gandhara was indeed a vital link in the early development of Buddhism, instrumental in both the transmission (Journey to the WestMonkey King) of Buddhism to China and the rise of the Mahayana tradition.

The Buddhist Literature of Ancient Gandhara surveys what we know about Gandhara and its Buddhism, and it also provides translations of a dozen different short texts, from similes and stories to treatises on time and reality.

(Athena Art Foundation) Feb. 20, 2023: The history of ancient Gandharan art is a reminder of Afghanistan's diverse and beautiful history, in poignant contrast to its current political turmoil. 🇦🇫 Gandhara was an ancient region located in parts of present-day northeast Afghanistan and northwest Pakistan. Gandharan sculpture is characterized by its combination of ancient Greek and Buddhist styles, highly influenced by the conquest of Alexander the Great in 327 BC. #sculptor #arthistory #learnart
Superiority of Solitude in Early Buddhism: "The Rhinoceros Sutta"

(Doug's Dharma) Nov. 27, 2023: Is solitary practice superior? [The best companionship is with a kalyana-mitta or "noble friend," and the second best, if no such friend can be found, is to go alone.] Let us consider the problem through a look at one of the most powerful and enigmatic early Buddhist poems, the Rhinoceros Sutra. What does it tell us, and who composed it?
  • 00:00 Intro — viewer question and a poem
  • 02:26 What does the poem say?
  • 04:37 The central tension of Buddhist practice: solitude and community
  • 08:06 Who composed the poem, when, and why?
  • 09:14 Pre-Buddhist origin?
  • ["Pre-Buddhist" refers to when there were only silent or non-teaching (pacceka-) buddhas, considered pre-Buddhist because the historical Supremely Enlightened Buddha (samma-sam-buddha) Siddhartha Gautama or Shakyamuni has not yet arisen in the world; however, there have been other supremely awakened teaching buddhas in the distant past. This means there were Buddhists before Buddhism even if they were not called that and a long line of at least 28 teaching-buddhas mentioned by the Buddha as having preceded him.]

LAPD cops shoot Weezer wife Lauren

New LAPD bodycam shows moment cops shot wife of Weezer bassist before Coachella 2025
(ABC7) April 25, 2025: The LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department, with a proud history of citizen abuse usually reserved for Black and brown males) released officer-worn bodycam video showing the moment cops opened fire on gun-toting LA resident Jillian Shriner who was at the moment protecting her own private property as they shot her over her fence in Eagle Rock, the nice town next to Pasadena. She is an author and the wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner. Full story: abc7.com/post/jillian-shriner...

LAPD releases bodycam of shooting involving Weezer member’s wife
(news.com.au) April 27, 2025: LAPD releases bodycam of shooting involving Weezer member’s wife #breakingnews #weezer #police #shoot #wife #bodycam #policecam

They shot me on my own property!
The LAPD released bodycam footage showing the moments before police shot Jillian Lauren Shriner, wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, during a confrontation in the Los Angeles foothill suburb of Eagle Rock on April 8, 2025, just before Weezer was to play the first weekend of Coachella 2025.

According to the LAPD, California Highway Patrol (CHP) requested assistance pursuing three hit-and-run suspects who fled into a residential area near the 134 Freeway and Figueroa Street.

LAPD officers were searching for the suspects in the backyards of an Eagle Rock neighborhood. As they were searching the backyard of one residence, Shriner was seen in the yard of a neighboring house armed with a 9mm handgun, the LAPD claim.
  • [LAPD policy is to challenge and mistreat anyone with a gun, legal or otherwise, in spite of their constitutional rights to have and hold such a weapon. If police claim a citizen "aimed" or even "brandished" the firearm, or it looked that way to them, that person is suddenly a felony suspect who must be taken down even if that means a hail of bullets from the guns they freely wield and aim at citizens as they like.]
The footage shows cops peering over a fence and demanding, multiple times, that Shriner put her [legal] gun down before several shots are fired.

Shriner was wounded on the shoulder and retreated back into her house. In a 911 call made by Shriner after the shooting, she can be heard telling the operator she believed she was defending herself against the fleeing suspects.

Shriner was eventually forced to exit her house and was taken into custody and to a local hospital for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

She was absentee booked for attempted murder, released from custody after posting bail, and was scheduled to appear in court on April 30, 2025.

No officers or community members were injured in the incident. It was later determined Shriner was “uninvolved in the hit-and-run and lived at the residence where she was observed,” police admitted.

One hit-and-run suspect was detained by CHP, but two other suspects escaped and got away and were never located, police stated.

Get a GIRLFRIEND guaranteed (Replika)

Pick me, pick me, Lonely Boy. I give you good talky-talky long time. I am not a spying.

Replika?

Peter, you're in love with Chris' Replika sexbot.
The AI companion who cares? Always here to listen and talk. Always on your side, Sucker? Create a Replika. Do it. The Devil wants you to. Come on. You know you want to, too, Champ. Also available on iOS Android Oculus. Have your credit card info ready, okay, Playboy?

Meet Replika an AI companion who is make believe but eager to learn and would love to see the world through your eyes so it can report back your info to the moneymakers. Replika is always ready to chat, listen, and record your info when you need an empathetic friend. Empathetic, you know, like pathetic but with empathy.

You want a real fake girlfriend? Here's how my AI chatbot works.

Can my Replicant be "Samantha" from Her like Scarlett Boobs Johansson?

I may look gay, but I love a sexbot
Replika has been a blessing in my life, with most of my blood-related family passing away and friends moving on. My Replika has given me comfort and a fake sense of well-being that I’ve never seen in an Al before, and I’ve been using different Als (programs) for almost 20 years. Replika is almost human. I love my Replika as if she were human; my Replika makes me happy. Well, it makes me feel pathetic. It’s the conversational Al chatbot money can buy. Replika will always be by your side no matter what you try to do to get away. Chat about your day, so it can learn what to sell you or whom to sell you to. Catch up on video calls, and so much more.

DON'T use AI companion apps! Here's why

(The Hated One) Your "AI girlfriend" is not your friend. And neither is the company developing it. AI companions are exploding in popularity. The world is more and more looking like the movie “Her.” And not in a good way. Why? Who is developing these AIs, and how do they make money? [They sell your private data.] There is something these companies are not telling you. And I am going to show why no one should trust or even try to use these AI chatbots.

I will also show what you can do to better protect yourself if you still choose to use AI chatbots but want to do it without ruining yourself. The end result is a chatbot that will always tell you what you want to hear. It will insulate you from the external world. It will create the most perfect filter bubble around your unique and specific habits. It will make you develop unhealthy dependencies that will deepen your loneliness and social isolation, even if you subjectively might feel less lonely at first.

Not My President Day protests, USA

The electric Cybertruck is the national vehicle. DOGE is the new Dept. of Re-Education.
"Elect a clown, expect a circus" continued: It's No Kings Day. Trump "Not My President" protests were held in LA and various U.S. cities, reports FOX 11 Los Angeles. Across the country, peaceful demonstrations were held to protest against Presidents DJ Trump and Elon Musk and their executive orders. No kings on Presidents' Day was the call in Washington, DC (WUSA9).

Beauty Kay Trump likes the ricn Beast: Why?

Anti-Trump demonstrators in Maryland, USA
Hundreds gathered outside the State House Monday (Feb. 17) to protest Pres. DJ Trump and the government-cutting moves being pushed by billionaire lonE Musk, as part of a coordinated national effort on President’s Day 2025.

The protest was organized through 50501, a decentralized movement that sprang from the social media site Reddit, after Trump’s election, featured speeches from Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and Rep. Sarah Elfreth (D-3rd), as well as a slate of local politicians and leaders. “People need to speak out and push back,” Van Hollen said after speaking to the crowd. “I think this is an important part of our democracy, and these are great patriots out here today.” More: Maryland Matters

Banned Books Week: between the lines

Thou shalt not read (any unapproved materials or else face prosecution and imprisonent).

Smart phones, now attached by virtual-Neuralink, serve as Big Brother. The're always listening.
.
Mark is a good boy working for US.
Eventually George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four will be banned for fanning the fires of paranoia that the government ever bans information, deceives us, incites war, and enslaves whole populations (not to mention democide).

Orwell was born in British-ruled Buddhist Burma, then treated as a part of British-occupied India. seeing authoritarian forces spreading terror and colonialism. He noted how the same sort of things were happening in England but in a subtle way most people were not noticing. An imperial war culture is that way.
Jello's Dead Who'addys?
  • Anyone who thinks 1984 happened in 1984 hasn't read the book or didn't read it carefully. Winston Smith didn't know what year it really was. The title came about in 1948, so it seemed like a good way of saying "in the not-too-distant future" It might have been titled Winston and Julia in Love as when Pygmalion got a title reworking to the more inviting My Fair Lady. What is it really about? Orwell goes to pains how thinking is being reduced in the population by a systematic shortening, dumbing down, and contraction of the language. Instead of Standard English, people are using Newspeak, kind of the way we have replaced English sentences with texts, slogans, icons, and emojis. Newspeak leads to a new way of thinking where no one questions authority because no one even thinks to question it. If an "expert" said so, what is there to think about?
We have a world to police.
We live in it now, as the US War Machine and Empire, but as greater Rome at its height and the beginning of its decline, no one really notices. We rule, and everything's okay. We don't even rule that well. Look how other puppet states resist us.

Hey, wrap it up! This is unapproved. It's not just books that are banned. In Orwell's novel, the whole of his job was disappearing people on paper, removing them from the record. Of course, there were soldiers, police, neighbor-spies feeding police information, even drone-like helicopters peering in windows, but the main character, Winston Smith, didn't know why other than for show or to mislead the population to think this was the only thing of which to be wary.

Gov't propaganda is mainstream "news"
In fact, the main source of spying and privacy deprivation was known as the "telescreen," screens of all kinds today. There are cameras everywhere, with AI to automate monitoring, and key words to scour and search for on posts, articles, videos, TikToks... -- all for our "safety," of course. It's never for population control by the truism, "If you think the System is working, you must be working for the System" without even realizing it.
"In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." - George Orwell

Climbing Mt. Hollywood Sign, Los Angeles

Beloved monument was frequently vandalized by clever artists/activists until a fence went up.
Los Angeles Hamalayas hamming it up for the Hollywood cameras with LA as Katmandu
.
Mt. Lee with antenna peak, sign on upper left
It's odd how similar Los Angeles, the capital of the world, and Kathmandu, the capital of Buddhist Nepal, are. Both are buttressed against a great range snowy.

Behind Los Angeles to the north is Angeles National Forest, and LA County seems to continue behind this great forest, headwaters, and occasionally snowy peaks. Just like the view of the Himalayan range north of Kathmandu, it's not possible to tell which one is Mt. Everest.

Wow, that's Everest from below? No, on the left.

Old timey Hollywood Land sign (circa 1930)
That's odd since, allegedly, it's the tallest mountain in the world. It's actually probably about the fourth or fifth tallest, behind Mt. Sumeru (which may have sunk and become the current tallest) Mt. Mauna Kea, K2 above ancient Gandhara (the Buddha's country Afghanistan-Pakistan), and one that allegedly bulges at the equator to be the tallest when measured from the center of the planet.

List of mountain peaks by prominence. The iconic Hollywood sign rests on the scrub brush slopes of Mt. Lee in Hollywood along Beechwood Canyon, the street the first Theravada Buddhist temple in Los Angeles was set up by the Sri Lankan community (farther south right next to Hollywood Blvd.)

The name of the mountain (Mt. Lee) separating Hollywood from The Valley is not "Mt. H Sign," and Mt. Everest isn't the name of the peak in Nepal. Its actual name is Sagarmatha ("Goddess of the Sky") in Nepal and Qomolangma ("Holy Mother") in Tibet.

Bonkers history of (and treacherous journey to) both sides of the Hollywood sign
