In a world where hundreds of TV channels and thousands of websites offer countless choices for entertainment, it’s becoming rare that one show or movie can stand out from the crowd to become a full-on, must-see event.

The latest space epic in the “Star Wars” series, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” has clearly managed to do that, with a near-constant presence in its own ads, hundreds of sometimes ridiculous product tie-ins, and an endless parade of media stories about every aspect of the film.

The question that hundreds of millions of film buffs have pondered for months now is: Can it possibly live up to the hype? Or will it fail to deliver, like the disappointing 1999 prequel “The Phantom Menace”? And will the filmmakers respect viewers’ intelligence by steering clear of creating annoying characters like Jar Jar Binks?

I’m happy to report that “Awakens” does indeed deliver in spades, and without any stupid creatures dumbing things down.

Knowing that this latest adventure was put in the hands of one of Hollywood’s current top popcorn filmmaker, J.J. Abrams (who has also revived the “Mission: Impossible” and “Star Trek” franchises), there was plenty of reason to be excited from the very moment the famed John Williams score started to play.

The critic-heavy audience burst into applause with the Lucasfilm logo, the title appearance and the start of the explanatory scroll that brought viewers up to speed on the movie’s events.

That’s three rounds of applause in about two minutes, and the first actual image of the film hadn’t even been shown yet. So what’s the plot about?

The plot takes place well after the events of its predecessor in the storyline, “Return of the Jedi,” and has the brilliance to involve the three most popular characters of the original trilogy: Han Solo, Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker, backed by an impressive trio of new characters. Luke has disappeared, as the evil Empire’s even more evil successor government known as the First Order is scouring the galaxy looking for him since he is the last of the Jedi warriors.

Meanwhile, Leia is now a general in the rebellion and has sent a brash fighter pilot named Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) to a planet called Jakku to find a map that would lead to Luke’s whereabouts. He finds it in holographic form, and in a nice homage to the very first “Star Wars” film, he places it into his robot sidekick, BB-8 and sends it off on its own to seek help when an army of Stormtroopers comes to capture the map.

The robot is discovered by a young woman named Rey (Daisy Ridley), whose existence as an orphan living in a desert landscape bears intriguing parallels to the origins of Luke Skywalker.

She at first tries to sell it off, but suddenly realizes that there’s something important about BB-8 and winds up having to run for safety and hide inside a spaceship that’s seemingly out of commission. It turns out to be the Millennium Falcon, which of course brings her into contact with the legendary Han Solo and Chewie, as that dynamic duo helps lead the adventurous quest to find Luke and once again save the galaxy from the forces of evil.

As South Africa prepares to hold a state funeral for beloved Nelson Mandela, Democracy Now! looks at how the CIA helped the South African government track down and capture Mandela in 1962.

In 1990, the Cox News Service quoted a former U.S. official saying that hours after Mandela’s arrest, a senior CIA operative named Paul Eckel admitted the agency’s involvement. 

Eckel was reported as having told the official, "We have turned Mandela over to the South African security branch. We gave them every detail, what he would be wearing, the time of day, just where he would be. They have picked him up. It is one of our greatest coups." Several news outlets have reported the actual source of the tip that led to the arrest of Mandela was a CIA official named Donald Rickard. 

On Thursday, Democracy Now! attempted to reach Rickard at his home in Colorado. On two occasions, a man who picked up the phone hung up when we asked to speak with Donald Rickard.

The activist group RootsAction has launched a campaign to urge the CIA to open its files on Mandela and South Africa, and the media watchdog group Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting has questioned why corporate media outlets have largely ignored the story. BERKELEY, California - About 25 tents and a few dozen bleary-eyed campers remained Thursday morning at the OCCUPY BERKELEY encampment at Civic Center Park, hours after police and campers clashed.

The confrontation started late Wednesday night after officers served notice that campers -- who numbered more than 100 staying in about 60 tents -- would be arrested and their belongings confiscated if they did not leave by 10:00 pm.

Campers said police drove onto the park grounds late Wednesday night in patrol cars and began confiscating tents. Some left while others stayed and confronted officers, campers said.

"The police have been rolling by here for a few days in marked and unmarked cars," said Mike, a 31-year-old Berkeley man who declined to give his last name. "I stayed to protect my family, my Occupy family."

Eric Westcott was part of a group that left and set up camp outside Bank of America on Shattuck Avenue. He returned Thursday morning at the encampment next to Martin Luther King Jr. Way, between Allston Way and Center Street.

At dawn, all that remained there resembled the aftermath of a battle, as the park's ample lawn was littered with food, wrinkled clothes, apple crates, debris, and tents -- some of which were torn and frayed.

BANGKOK, Thailand — Police fired tear gas canisters Tuesday at several thousand demonstrators trying to bar lawmakers from Parliament, injuring dozens of them and heating up a political crisis that has gripped the country for six weeks. Reporters at the scene heard sounds of gunfire, but police Maj. Gen. Viboon Bangthamai said that only tear gas was being used against the crowd in Bangkok. Forty-six people were injured, including two seriously, said Petpong Kumtonkitjakarn of the Erawan Medical Center.

"One of them lost his leg, another was hit with shrapnel in the chest," he said. The morning clashes came just hours before Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat, who was sworn in Sept. 25, was scheduled to deliver his government's policy statement to lawmakers.

Protesters from the People's Alliance for Democracy — which is seeking the government's resignation and a major overhaul of the electoral system — have occupied the grounds of the prime minister's office for six weeks. Late Monday, they expanded their protest by marching to Parliament, vowing to block lawmakers from entering the building.

After the morning clashes, thousands of protesters regrouped in front of Parliament where speakers addressed the crowd from a makeshift stage. "Fight with us in protecting this country! Stay with us here until we have our victory," a speaker told the cheering crowd. The action by alliance activists came in response to the recent arrests of two of its leaders, and seemed intended to spark a confrontation to revive its flagging movement.

The alliance says Somchai is a proxy for ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in 2006 by military leaders who accused him of corruption and who now resides in exile. Somchai is a brother-in-law of Thaksin.

When protesters originally took over the grounds of Government House on Aug. 26, their intention was to oust then Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej — whom they also accused of being a puppet of Thaksin. They later said they also opposed his successor, Somchai. Samak was dismissed from office on Sept. 9 by a court decision that found him guilty on a conflict of interest charge. He had accepted pay for hosting a TV show while in office.

At the nearby Government House, protest leaders called for supporters to join their ranks. "Brothers and sisters, please come out and help us," said Somsak Kosaisuk, one of nine protest leaders. "We were protesting peacefully. I urge you to come out to join us in our fight against this illegitimate government."

"We will not stop," Somsak said. "We will fight until we have our victory!" The alliance claims Thailand's rural majority — who gave strong election victories to the ruling People's Power Party — is too poorly educated to responsibly choose their representatives and says they are susceptible to vote buying.

The protest group wants the country to abandon the system of one-man, one-vote, and instead have a mixed system in which some representatives are chosen by certain professions and social groups. They have not explained how exactly such a system would work or what would make it less susceptible to manipulation.

BANGKOK, Thailand - Thai police used tear gas to disperse a crowd of several thousand anti-government protesters who were besieging city police headquarters. The prime minister said he might declare a state of emergency if the rioting worsens.

Associated Press journalists witnessed police throwing dozens of canisters of gas at the crowd of at least 2,000 people. Protest leaders claimed they had come to demand the surrender of officers who allegedly beat demonstrators earlier in the day.

Tensions rose Friday, three days after members of the People's Alliance for Democracy occupied Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej's office compound to demand his ouster.

More than 200 railway workers staged a work stoppage by taking emergency sick leave, forcing the cancellation of 35 trains from Bangkok to major provinces, said State Railways of Thailand spokesman Pairat Rojcharoen-ngarm.

Protesters also tried to block passengers from entering three airports in southern Thailand, at Hat Yai, Krabi and the popular tourist destination of Phuket. Airport authorities announced that all three airports would close Friday night for safety reasons, causing flights in and out to be canceled.

Earlier Friday, several skirmishes erupted outside the Government House as police and protesters jockeyed for position.

In the morning, police muscled into the site to deliver a court eviction demanding that the alliance members leave the site. Several minor injuries were reported throughout the day as brief skirmishes erupted around the perimeter of the compound and in nearby streets.

Police then announced that they would retreat in order to ease tensions.

"The situation was very volatile and a clash was likely if we pushed on," police spokesman Surapol Tuantong told the NBT TV network. "We have given way to let them back into the Government House to prevent a clash. All security forces have left the government compound."

But protesters then descended on the police station.

"We went there to demand responsibility from the police who ordered the beatings of protesters," said alliance spokesman Suriyasai Katasila. "They responded by firing tear gas at us."

About 10 people suffered minor injuries in that clash.

Earlier, Sondhi Limthongkul, a protest leader, vowed to continue the protests until Samak steps down.

"We definitely won't leave the Government House until we can topple Samak's administration," Sonthi told The Associated Press. "He cannot stay on for long, I am very sure of that. You can see people coming more and more to join us."

Sondhi promised that the alliance would install a "clean and efficient political system."

Arrest warrants were issued Wednesday for nine of the group's leaders on charges of insurrection, conspiracy, illegal assembly and refusing orders to disperse. Insurrection, the legal equivalent of treason, carries a maximum penalty of death or life imprisonment.

Another court issued an order late Wednesday demanding that the protesters leave the government compound immediately and stop blocking streets. But on Friday, the court suspended the order, saying it posed a risk of further unrest.

Samak, who refuses to resign, has accused the protesters of trying to provoke violence.

After Thaksin was deposed in the bloodless coup, his party was dissolved and he was banned from public office until 2012.

Thailand's embattled prime minister has vowed to end massive rallies against his rule without force -- raising the spectre of a prolonged siege of Bangkok's main government compound (AFPTV).

But Samak led Thaksin's political allies to a December 2007 election victory, and their assumption of power triggered fears that Thaksin would make a political comeback on the strength of his continued popularity in Thailand's rural majority.

Thailand has had 17 constitutions since 1932 — a reflection of the political instability and military coups that followed the drafting of the first charter that created a constitutional monarchy. The last coup was in 2006, when Thaksin was ousted.

The prime minister spoke Friday after two meetings with the country's military chiefs to discuss the increasing unrest in Bangkok's streets caused by protesters seeking his resignation.

Samak says he had ordered police to withdraw from confronting demonstrators because he hoped to calm down the situation, in which both sides scuffled roughly in the street.

But he says that after he hosts a ceremony honoring Thailand's royal family Saturday, he will consider declaring a state of emergency if the situation deteriorates.

That would allow suspending some legal procedures to restore the peace.
