Not until a fair accounting of votes does anything happen in a democracy. (It sure would be nice to live in a democracy). All those who say otherwise are stirring up anarchy. The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) is voting today on new rules that may effectively abandon "Net neutrality," the concept of a free and open Internet. (Watch this).

(CGP Grey/cgpgrey.com) Let's tell the FCC to reclassify broadband Internet as a public utility, a Title II common carrier telecommunications service. (Discuss). Music: Broke for Free.

The FCC proposal would let Internet providers charge corporate media companies extra fees to receive preferential treatment, such as faster speeds for their products and content.

Under previous regulations struck down earlier this year, providers were forced to provide ALL content at equal speeds, including Wisdom Quarterly, Democracy Now!, Occupy.com, FEMEN, CodePink, and other outlets.

Just steps from the vote, demonstrators have set up an "Occupy the FCC" (occupythefcc.com) encampment calling for federal regulators to reclassify broadband service as a public utility.

"Trust me; I'm a banker!"

This will allow for the requirement of "Net neutrality" rules.

The CEOs of 28 U.S. broadband providers and trade groups told their FCC not to classify broadband as a utility, explaining that regulating broadband would "impose great costs [to our private corporations], allowing unprecedented government micromanagement of all aspects of the Internet economy."

While failed-comedian Bill O'Reilly (FOX News) and faux-newser Jon Stewart (Comedy Central) duked it out, there was another much more serious alternative presidential debate presented by NPR (National Public Radio). It was between third-party candidates Jill Stein (Green) and Gary Johnson (Libertarian).

What's it like to be a third-party candidate running for president? Ralph Nader can tell us: "You're excluded from the debates," he says. "You spend an exhausting amount of time, until Labor Day, trying to get over the ballot access barriers. Your petitioners are harassed in the streets; you're subjected to baseless lawsuits by one party or another."
  
Nader has run for president three times -- four if you count the time he ran unofficially. In 2000, he managed to win almost 3 percent of the national vote.

To this day, getting a third-party candidate into a presidential debate is practically impossible.
  
[The one-party system we have, halved in two, has made sure of that.] The Commission on Presidential Debates says that to be included, you have to poll 15 percent with voters. That's why George Farah, founder of Open Debates, a group that wants the system reformed, thinks the commission is the main problem.

"This commission exists for the principle purpose of protecting and strengthening the two parties," Farah says. "Every four years they allow the major party candidates to negotiate agreements that dictate many of the terms of the debates -- including the exclusion of popular third-party voices."
  
So given the two major party candidates had 90 minutes and at least 50 million viewers for their debate last Wednesday, [NPR] decided to invite two of the third-party candidates to a debate of our own.

Gary Johnson is the Libertarian Party's nominee. Jill Stein is the Green Party's nominee. They joined moderator -- and host of weekends on All Things Considered -- Guy Raz for a debate focusing on domestic issues: the economy, health care, and the role of government. More

Kyrgyzstan opposition sets up "people's gov't"

The government has been over-thrown by citizens who rose up in opposition. (BBC) The opposition in Kyrgyzstan says it is setting up a "people's government" after deadly clashes left dozens dead. An opposition leader and former foreign minister, Roza Otunbayeva, told the BBC that new defence and interior ministers had been appointed.

The whereabouts of President Bakiyev are not clear, but reports say that he has flown out of the capital, Bishkek. Protests at rising prices, corruption, and the arrest of opposition leaders had erupted in three cities. Ms. Otunbayeva said the interim government would remain in power for six months and draw up a new constitution.

Kyrgyzstan is a strategically important Central Asian state and houses a key US military base that supplies imperial forces in Afghanistan. Russia also has a base there. Ms. Otunbayeva said these military bases could continue as before. [Fearful of a similar revolution,] the US said it deplored the violence and urged "respect for the rule of law." More>>

BANGKOK, Thailand — Police fired tear gas canisters Tuesday at several thousand demonstrators trying to bar lawmakers from Parliament, injuring dozens of them and heating up a political crisis that has gripped the country for six weeks. Reporters at the scene heard sounds of gunfire, but police Maj. Gen. Viboon Bangthamai said that only tear gas was being used against the crowd in Bangkok. Forty-six people were injured, including two seriously, said Petpong Kumtonkitjakarn of the Erawan Medical Center.

"One of them lost his leg, another was hit with shrapnel in the chest," he said. The morning clashes came just hours before Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat, who was sworn in Sept. 25, was scheduled to deliver his government's policy statement to lawmakers.

Protesters from the People's Alliance for Democracy — which is seeking the government's resignation and a major overhaul of the electoral system — have occupied the grounds of the prime minister's office for six weeks. Late Monday, they expanded their protest by marching to Parliament, vowing to block lawmakers from entering the building.

After the morning clashes, thousands of protesters regrouped in front of Parliament where speakers addressed the crowd from a makeshift stage. "Fight with us in protecting this country! Stay with us here until we have our victory," a speaker told the cheering crowd. The action by alliance activists came in response to the recent arrests of two of its leaders, and seemed intended to spark a confrontation to revive its flagging movement.

The alliance says Somchai is a proxy for ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in 2006 by military leaders who accused him of corruption and who now resides in exile. Somchai is a brother-in-law of Thaksin.

When protesters originally took over the grounds of Government House on Aug. 26, their intention was to oust then Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej — whom they also accused of being a puppet of Thaksin. They later said they also opposed his successor, Somchai. Samak was dismissed from office on Sept. 9 by a court decision that found him guilty on a conflict of interest charge. He had accepted pay for hosting a TV show while in office.

At the nearby Government House, protest leaders called for supporters to join their ranks. "Brothers and sisters, please come out and help us," said Somsak Kosaisuk, one of nine protest leaders. "We were protesting peacefully. I urge you to come out to join us in our fight against this illegitimate government."

"We will not stop," Somsak said. "We will fight until we have our victory!" The alliance claims Thailand's rural majority — who gave strong election victories to the ruling People's Power Party — is too poorly educated to responsibly choose their representatives and says they are susceptible to vote buying.

The protest group wants the country to abandon the system of one-man, one-vote, and instead have a mixed system in which some representatives are chosen by certain professions and social groups. They have not explained how exactly such a system would work or what would make it less susceptible to manipulation.

BANGKOK, Thailand - The Thai government ended a state of emergency imposed in the capital to control a spiraling political crisis, saying Sunday it had only served to scare away tourists crucial to the country's economy.

Emergency rule was imposed by the government on Sept. 2 after a night of violent clashes between anti-government supporters and opponents left one man dead and dozens injured.
