Quaker Friends,
we all deserve to feel safe from harm, no matter where we are. But this week, the Trump administration ramped up immigration raids nationwide, putting families and community members at risk of separation. Download posters to show solidarity with immigrants today.
One simple way we can show solidarity with immigrants is to promote messages of love, dignity, and welcome for all. To help do that, we have new posters ready to use. Take them to protests, vigils, and other events and display them at home, school, workplace, congregation, and other spaces. Download the posters.
GAZA: Help Palestinians return home to Rafah
(Kerri Kennedy, everyaction.com) Just days after the ceasefire deal, many displaced Palestinians began returning to their homes. Last week, our team in Gaza entered the city of Rafah, determined to help people make the difficult trek.
To assist, AFSC (American Friends Service Committee) provided support to a private company in removing rubble. Now, some streets that were blocked have been reopened. Watch the video.
TAKE ACTION by telling Congress: Protect our planet, not corporate profits!
Pres. Trump has issued executive orders that reverse progress to address climate change. Now Congress is considering more policies that will enrich fossil fuel companies at the expense of our air, land, and water. Instead of sacrificing our environment for the benefit of corporations, the U.S. must invest in clean energy and move away from fossil fuels. Join AFSC in calling on Congress to prioritize the health of our people and the planet.

AFSC STATEMENT: We must oppose Trump's efforts to silence and criminalize activists. Earlier this week, the Trump administration issued an executive order attempting to criminalize and silence people protesting Israel’s genocide in Gaza, the West Bank, and Palestine.
The order calls for the deportation of American students involved in protests and instructs the U.S. Justice Department to aggressively prosecute pro-Palestinian sympathizers and activists.
As a Quaker organization that has worked for decades to support peace and justice in Palestine and around the world, we strongly oppose this order. Read the statement.

“Bomblets” were filled with steel balls surrounding explosives that were then dropped over vast areas of the Buddhist country of Vietnam, causing extensive civilian deaths. In Vietnam, AFSC staff treated bomblet victims in Quang Ngai. In the U.S., the NARMIC program worked to expose the companies that produce these weapons of war. Watch the video.

Alas, we have been let down by "insider" psychic Stewart Swerdlow (expansions.com), who stated two incontrovertible facts, which he heard without any use of his psychic powers from fellow insiders as he served as an unofficial backchannel between DC and the Kremlin. One, Trump would win this election. Two, he would never make it to office, a position that would go to VP Vance. What happened, Swerdlow? How do you get your information so right on one end and let down the hopeful so badly on the other?

Why Tom Brady was behind the FTX crash
(Monefize) Nov. 18, 2022. Sam Bankman-Fried's FTX crypto exchange collapsed with repercussions for the entire market being felt because of it. Sam Bankman-Fried, the disgraced CEO of FTX, has been under fire recently for mismanagement of billions of dollars in funds, which came to light after a liquidity crunch that turned out to really be a poorly hidden case of insolvency. But not many people really know about how Tom Brady and his ex-wife, Gisele Bundchen, are involved. Not only has the couple been promoting FTX for the past year, Tom Brady is under investigation for involvement in so much more. This crypto scandal continues to get much worse...

The FTX Collapse, Explained | What Went Wrong | WSJ
Wall Street Journal
(WSJ) Nov. 14, 2022. Former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried was hailed as a savior of crypto before FTX’s implosion.
Cryptocurrency exchange FTX was seen as a survivor in a struggling industry, but over the course of six days the exchange collapsed due to a sudden liquidity crunch. WSJ explains the factors that drove FTX’s growth and what led to its downfall.
News Explainers

The stage after that, though, is fear — and that is precisely where we are now. The sum of Bankman-Fried may have added up to less than his parts, but that doesn’t change the fact that he was deeply interconnected with the worlds of politics and finance beyond the relatively small world of digital currencies.
Since his bankruptcy filing, the crypto empire Bankman-Fried presided over has been subject to even more embarrassing and damning revelations, and he is the target of multiple investigations.
It is still too early to say that he’s headed for prison: If the prior big financial crisis taught us anything, it’s not to be shocked when nobody gets arrested for obvious crimes — but that is certainly a strong possibility. Here’s what we’ve learned about SBF since Friday.
FTX software had a very illegal-sounding back door for moving huge sums of money
Who can judge but a magistrate, so it’s not up to us to decide what’s against the law. But we’ve got eyes.
Over the weekend, it was revealed — first by Reuters — that a back door was written into the code at the FTX crypto exchange that allowed Bankman-Fried to move customer deposits from that platform to his (supposed completely separate) hedge fund, Alameda Research.
In essence, this was a way to keep quiet the alarm bells that would have started to ring if anyone else had been aware that he was moving this money. All told, Reuters reported that $1 billion was missing. More
Uganda’s gold discovery: What it could mean for crypto
Blockchain has a future, Bitcoin likely does not.
Is gold becoming inflationary? Can Bitcoin replace it as a store of value due to [Bitcoin's artificial] scarcity and reliability? Are Uganda’s [gold] numbers implausible?
Questions arise.
These are fraught times for the cryptocurrency and blockchain sector, so it isn’t surprising that industry proponents might seize upon any promising news to help charge flagging markets.
A Reuters' report out of Uganda last week about a massive gold ore discovery [worth $12+ trillion] supplied just this kind of fuel.
What does the state of gold mining [on the continent of] Africa have to do with the price of global Bitcoin (BTC)? Quite a bit, potentially.
Bitcoin has periodically laid claim to being digital gold largely on the strength of its [artificially] strict 21 million supply limit, which makes it non-inflationary and a good store of value — in theory.
Gold, of course, is the store of value par excellence, with a limited supply and a solid track record that goes back millennia.
But if Uganda is sitting on 31 million metric tons of gold ore, as the government declared, might not that substantially boost the world’s gold supply? That in turn could lower the price of gold — and make it a less secure “store of value” generally.
Gold’s loss could be the cryptocurrency’s gain.
Some drew encouragement from this notion. Microstrategies CEO Michael Saylor, for instance, posted a video on Twitter about the Ugandan discovery of “huge gold deposits,” which might net 320,158 metric tons of refined gold “valued at $12.8 trillion.”
As Saylor noted on June 17, 2022: “#Gold is plentiful. #Bitcoin is scarce," further telling CNBC:
“Every commodity in the world has looked good in a hyperinflationary environment, but the dirty secret is you can make more oil, you can make more silver, you can make more gold…Bitcoin’s the only thing that looks like a commodity that is scarce and capped.”
But perhaps there is less here than meets the eye. The 320,158 metric tons of refined gold that the Ugandan mining ministry spokesman said could be produced from the new deposits in the country’s northeastern corner would far exceed the 200,000 metric tons in above-ground gold that exist in the entire world today.
One gold mining trade publication went so far as to suggest the Ugandan government may have been confusing metric tons with ounces in its projections. More

NEW YORK, NY - The stock
market is not the only thing dropping. Bonds, which are supposed to be
the "safe" part of every investor's portfolio, have faltered, too. In
what has been a rude awakening for some naive investors, bond funds have lost
ground these past couple of weeks, unlike in past downturns for stocks.
What is different this time is that the same things undercutting stocks
are hurting bond prices: worries about inflation and the possibility of
much higher interest rates. More
Today saw the biggest plunge in Wall Street history as the stock market dropped 1,175 points (4%, 1,600 points at one time during the day as panic selling started and automated sell offers were triggered).
It has been as high as 2,600 which is meaningless, dizzying heights that do not reflect reality. Bitcoin is not helping as it deflates leaving suckers panicked. All 2018 gains are lost (npr.org).
How's that crypto bitcoin doing?
This sell-off started last week with no apparent explanation. Interest rates are going up. Pres. Trump is being an _-hole, as usual, and other market indicators are generally "healthy."
But clearly this is all about an overheated, over-inflated, fear-stricken market. It's volatile. The VIX (volatility index) has been placid, comatose, but today it surged up beyond its historical average.
I want my money back, Donald Duck Trump!
However, this is not the worst it's ever been in percentage terms. It was worse during the recent Depression we never really pulled out of and the dot com crisis and housing bubble burst that have hit it.
Then there was that Black Friday that sent the country into mire so that only a permanent war economy seemed like the solution. How's that working out for you, war profiteers?

Dow sinks 200 points as Wall Street suffers another bad day: Feb. 5(money.cnn.com) After the market started 2018 with a bang, last week was the worst on
Wall Street in two years. The selling gathered steam on Friday when the
Dow plunged 666 points, or 2.5%, its worst day since the Brexit mayhem
of June 2016. Nearly $1 trillion of market value was erased from the
