Happy Leif Erikson Day (10/9)

Leif Erikson: The First European in North America
![]() |
| Hi, we're here to rape and pillage |
This Viking Cruises® video chronicles how, nearly 500 years before the debt-ridden Italian (Jewish Spanish) explorer sailed the Atlantic, a 25-year-old Norse navigator named Leif Erikson and a crew of 35 men set sail to explore the seas west of Greenland.
- Scandinavia is a cold subregion of Northern Europe where the native Sámi peoples live in the Xmas lifestyle or reindeer, shamanism, and hallucinogenic mushrooms.

When Erikson arrived on the shores of what he called “Vinland,” he became the first known European to set foot in North America.

| Helgo Buddha is a Viking treasure indicating world trade |
The island is perhaps best known for a major archeological area. The old trading town on Helgö began to emerge around the year 200 AD, 500 years before Birka at Björkö.
The Helgö Buddha
The first archeological dig in 1954 uncovered the remains of the early settlement, including a workshop area which attracted international interest. The most notable finds included a small Buddha statuette from North India and a christening scoop from Egypt, both dating from the 6th century.
The Indian Buddha statuette, the Irish crozier [1], and the Egyptian Coptic scoop found on Helgö are presently on display in the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm... More
ABOUT: Narrated by Viking Cruises Senior Vice President Karine Hagen, this short film traces Erikson’s history and his voyage into immortality. The son of intrepid Viking explorer Erik "Erik the Red" Thorvaldson, (Erik's son =) Erikson led the historic journey from Greenland to North America through uncharted waters without a compass. Although the discovery was celebrated for centuries in Norse legend and stories, many doubted the accuracy of those accounts. Doubts about Erikson’s discovery were finally dispelled in 1960, when modern-day explorers Helge and Anne Ingstad identified a Norse settlement located at the northern tip of Newfoundland that dates back to the exact time of Erikson’s voyage. In the United States, the achievement of the Viking explorer with adventure and exploration in his blood is commemorated every year on October 9th [when Greenlander, Neo-Nazi, and Norwegian Americans rampage quietly in their bedrooms and online]. Viking Cruises cherishes its Viking heritage and connection to seafaring visionaries like Leif Erikson. Karine Hagen of Viking River Cruises is our host. Learn more at vikingrivercruises.com

Since his bankruptcy filing, the crypto empire Bankman-Fried presided over has been subject to even more embarrassing and damning revelations, and he is the target of multiple investigations.
It is still too early to say that he’s headed for prison: If the prior big financial crisis taught us anything, it’s not to be shocked when nobody gets arrested for obvious crimes — but that is certainly a strong possibility. Here’s what we’ve learned about SBF since Friday.
FTX software had a very illegal-sounding back door for moving huge sums of money
Who can judge but a magistrate, so it’s not up to us to decide what’s against the law. But we’ve got eyes.
Over the weekend, it was revealed — first by Reuters — that a back door was written into the code at the FTX crypto exchange that allowed Bankman-Fried to move customer deposits from that platform to his (supposed completely separate) hedge fund, Alameda Research.
In essence, this was a way to keep quiet the alarm bells that would have started to ring if anyone else had been aware that he was moving this money. All told, Reuters reported that $1 billion was missing. More

Criticizing ISRAEL (video)
The Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) Story: Back in the mid-90s, three young Jewish women realized they could no longer keep silent about imperial Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine – so they decided to do something about it. Watch their story – our story – here. "Jewish Voice for Peace: Our Roots" video by Jake Ratner (jakeratner.com).
“This EO [executive order from Trump]
doesn’t fight antisemitism – and it
makes me feel less safe on campus.”
Jewish students and faculty oppose Trump’s executive order

.
NEW YORK CITY, NY - As President Trump signs an executive order (EO) on "antisemitism" on college campuses, Jewish students and faculty cry foul.
Jewish Voice for Peace students and academics know that this EO doesn’t address the terrifying rise of antisemitism across college campuses, but instead is a dangerous, authoritarian attempt to silence student activism that support Palestinian rights.
Trump’s EO is the latest attempt in an ongoing strategy to shut down solidarity with Palestinian rights, one of the fastest-growing movements on college campuses and arguably the start of a nationwide and international anti-apartheid movement targeting Israel’s violations of Palestinian human rights.

.
For the past few years, Jewish and Palestinian students especially have faced high-level attacks for their activism on Palestinian rights, with cases at UMass Amherst, Duke/UNC, and NYU being the most recent examples.
“This executive order won’t protect Jewish students against Nazis or Nazi recruitment, it won’t prevent campuses from scheduling important events on Jewish holidays, and it won’t protect Jewish religious spaces,” said Jewish Voice for Peace Research and Education Manager Tallie Ben Daniel.
“But it will target the incredible student movement for Palestinian rights, which is principled and diverse, and has always included a lot of Jewish students.”

Experience the Magic: Bhutan (video)
Naropa.edu/Bhutan; Wisdom Quarterly
Naropa Study Abroad in Bhutan
The vibrant union of this ancient Himalayan culture with Bhutan's modern global leadership in Gross National Happiness [counterpart to U.S. corporate capitalist "Gross National Product"] provides a fertile ground for international studies, and inspires creative research.
There are three required Naropa University courses and a choice of two RUB courses, for a total of 15 credits per semester. For Naropa students, these credits will apply toward one's major or electives.
View course descriptions of Naropa courses, as well as courses offered at the Royal University of Bhutan. Students admitted to Naropa's Bhutan Study Abroad program will be expected to participate in a 4-week online orientation program during the fall semester prior to departure. There are no costs nor grades associated with this online orientation, but participation is expected.
(Naropa.edu) In 2013, Naropa and the Royal University of Bhutan signed an agreement for Naropa to be the gateway university in North America to offer a semester-long study abroad program for undergraduates. Exchange students will be fully immersed in Bhutanese culture.

The Naropa University Bhutan Study Abroad Program is a unique opportunity for international studies at the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB), nestled just beneath Tibet and to the east of Nepal, high in the Himalayas.
In this student travel program, open to all students currently enrolled at a U.S. university, participans will spend a semester at RUB, fully immersed in Bhutanese culture, experiencing the arts, [Buddhist/Bon] spirituality, sustainable practices, mythology, education, happiness, and extraordinary landscapes similar to those in Nepal and Tibet.

As one engages in cross-cultural explorations and encounter diverse views, one will be introduced to effective tools for intercultural work, including environmental studies, contemplative practices, deep listening, and holding complex realities. Through international studies and student travel experience, one will gain a sense of leadership, finding a confident voice and understanding of one's role as a global citizen.
As a RUB student, dress in traditional Bhutanese clothing, live with Bhutanese students in campus dorms, eat in the cafeteria, and more, immersed in a culture based on happiness and anchored in Buddhist traditions that originated in Tibetan or Vajrayana Buddhism.

Students from other U.S. universities should consult with their academic adviser to see how these credits will apply.
English is the language of instruction in most Tibetan and Bhutanese schools and universities. Following a three-week orientation training with Naropa faculty, participants will spend the semester in residence at a selected RUB campus taking international studies courses and completing NU courses, including a research project. Read "Circling Back to the Source" in the spring issue of Naropa Magazine as an example.

Green Festival Los Angeles (Oct. 29-30)
GreenFestivals.org, Wisdom Quarterly

(rawfor30days.com)

The Green Fest comes to Los Angeles this weekend. The NYC Green Festival will now be held on Earth Day weekend, April 21-22, 2012. Saving the world means going green. Gaia, Mother Nature, our planet Earth is green. Corporations are green with envy and do not mind going green when it produces that other form of green (greenbacks).

What the world needs now is sustainability, citizen gardening, permaculture farming, natural ingredients over chemicals and Monsanto monstrosities. But how? This festival is all about how. The traditions and technologies already exist, already work, already have companies behind them waiting for implementation, already sit under a booth tent waiting to be seen. Come see.

Wisdom Quarterly visited the San Francisco version and wondered why the world was still waiting. This location is within walking distance of the Occupy Los Angeles site. The fest features Amy Goodman (Democracy Now!), Medea Benjamin (Code Pink), The [formerly evil, military-industrial complex supporting] Economic Hitman, Yoga Zone, health news, and more...

Country profile: Thailand
Thailand is a traveler's par-adise: a Buddhist country of cultural marvels, trop-ical beaches, trekable mountains, and vanishing rainforests. The monarchy, military, and Buddhist Sangha have helped to shape its society and politics. In the 1980s there was an economic boom, and the agrarian economy changed as Thais flocked to work in industry and the service sector. But that bubble burst in 1997 along with the south-east Asian financial crisis. Stock and property prices plummeted, dragging down the currency -- but leading to a very favorable exchange rate (BBC).Monetary unit: 1 baht = EXCHANGE RATE
