Abuse of the Buddhist term "mindfulness"

  • "Mindfulness" defined by Ven. Analayo Bhikkhu
  • The field of psychology appropriated (hijacked) the Buddhist term "mindfulness" (originally sati but now just "awareness" or "paying attention")
  • Anyone who thinks it was a commonplace practice in ancient India during the time of the Buddha should look up the Hindu definition of sati, which reveals it used to mean throwing a wife on the pyre when her husband died 😲
  • The great work of Jon Kabbat-Zin to help therapists led to the unexpected disconnection of the practice with anything, as if it could be a standalone endeavor
  • "Bare attention" is a component of sati, but it must be coupled with dispassionate (unbiased) looking on, free of greed, hatred, and delusion (wanting, aversion, and confusion)
  • What is one to be mindful of to advance to insight, realization, and awakening? The Buddha pointed at four things: body, feelings, mind, and mind-objects. What does this mean? Psychology cannot tell us, but the Dhamma can
  • Who needs Dhamma when we have a corporate bottom line to advance, productivity to raise, and mental health symptoms to abate?
  • Why call it "mindfulness," Psychology? Why not pick a new name for what you've turned this into?
Ego (buddhism podcast) The Buddha didn't teach us only to be "present." He taught us to remember (recollection, memory, bearing in mind, the faculty of sati)

On the road to Berkeley like Benji (The Graduate)
Personally, in college at UC Berkeley many years ago, I took a "Buddhist Psychology" course in the department and was so excited to finally be able to learn what "cognition" meant and what the Buddha had to say about all these psychological things. Our assigned textbook, written by a psychologist, was called Mindfulness. "All right," I thought, "I'm finally going to advance in my practice and being in college is going to help me. Imagine my surprise when, as I read, I did not recognize what was being called "mindfulness." It did not align with all the translated ancient texts I had read and was continuing to read from the Buddhist Publication Society and the Pali Text Society. A few years in the future I would even visit BPS Editor Bhikkhu Bodhi in Kandy, Sri Lanka, to ask him about all this.

The Art and Science of Mindfulness
Not yet having him as a direct resource, except through his translations and BPS newsletter messages, I asked my professor in class about how I was left perplexed by reading our textbook. She looked at me and shrugged, "Of course! This "mindfulness" isn't the Buddha's mindfulness. It is psychology's," she explained. I looked around and many students were nodding their heads in agreement. "There are two mindfulnesses?!" I balked. "There are now" was the implicit answer. "Does Berkeley know about this? Why is this class called Buddhist psychology if all we're going to talk about is Western psychology?" She winked because she was subverting the system and introducing Buddhist ideas back into class, but we had to know that the new mindfulness had been taken, changed, and applied in rigorous scientific ways to the behavioral sciences, therapy, counseling, and the mental health field. Sure, it wasn't the Buddha's mindfulness, but that's because it had to be stripped of all spirituality and/or religiosity to get by the gatekeepers of the university system. What a gyp.

Here's the text of last week's class:

How to use harmony to end a war
Mandy Kahn makes it onto LA billboard
Perpetual peace is a state in which belligerence does not begin. We can work to create a state of perpetual peace. When we do, we will have stepped out of the Era of Belligerence entirely.

However, before that occurs, we may find we have a desire to balance out an active outbreak of belligerence—a war—that is presently occurring. A very effective way to do that is to introduce increasing large amounts of harmony into the collective consciousness until active belligerence subsides.

Harmony is energy that balances active belligerence. Harmony is an aspect of the peace state. A perpetually peaceful world features a pervasive harmony that begins with an honoring of all aspects of the self (atta, atman) and continues with an honoring of all aspects of others.

To introduce more harmonic energy into the collective, we can either create harmony within ourselves or create harmony within a group. Either of these projects can generate powerful, balancing levels of harmony.

Let's look at each of the ways we can choose to work with harmony to end a war. First, we can play/work to create harmony within ourselves. Every self features various polarities—various ways of being, various viewpoints, various parts of lived history. When we introduce unconditional love and unconditional honoring to all aspects of self, we create harmony in the self.

If we are not yet ready to unconditionally love all aspects of self, we may work with a gentler energy: We can work with unconditional (universal metta and karuna) loving-kindness and compassion. These also heal, and they create a healed state within which unconditional love can more easily be chosen in the future.

So we can build harmony in ourselves, and when we do, we add harmony by way of individual consciousness to the collective consciousness. Once there, our personal harmony begins to balance harsh judgments expressed as belligerence in the collective.

Secondly, we can build harmony within a group. In any group, just as with self, there are various viewpoints, various ways of being, and lots of lived history. When we choose to unconditionally honor all members of a group with unconditional love, we create powerful energy for group harmony, which then contributes to the collective consciousness.

Group harmony is a powerful force that balances its opposite, which is the harsh judgment of others. The extreme expression of this judgment is collective violence called war.

But harmony in self and harmony in a group create a powerful healing process in the collective. (As with the building of harmony in self, when we work with group harmony, we can begin with unconditional kindness and compassion without limit and without end if we do not yet feel ready to work with unconditional love and honoring.

All of these powerful modalities create a platform for the next. Getting to a state of harmony in the collective is a “numbers game.” A certain amount of disharmony, fear, and lack-of-peace flows into our collective consciousness. That already exists.

All that is needed now is to get to a state of loving, a group expression to introduce the opposite energies of courageousness, harmony, and peace to balance, which creates a stasis of openness otherwise known as peace.

If we choose the energy of harmony, we may simply begin to generate it first within our own consciousness because doing so begins to send into the collective consciousness. From there, we can observe its effects. They indicate how much more is needed.

When we have added enough harmony, we will notice that belligerence has ceased altogether.

Think of playing with these balancing energies as adding hot and cold water to a tub. If we begin with a tub full of scalding hot water when the goal is to achieve warmth, what do we do? We cool water, gauge the temperature, and continue to add what is needed...until we reach what we desire.

Similarly, if there is a state of active belligerence around us and we'd like to create stasis (peace), what should we do? We can add harmony to our collective consciousness, through a group of individuals or an individual, until belligerence ceases. A “warm” state will be achieved.

Peace is a healed state. It is what we experience after what is disharmony has been healed into wholeness with unconditional love and unconditional honoring. Peace is the original state that existed before healing was needed, before judgment was introduced.

Peace is both what preceded judgment and what follows judgment. When enough harmony is introduced into the “tub” of collective consciousness, it balances the judgment in there. Belligerence ceases to exist. This is natural law.

When we make peace, adjusting aspects of peace such as harmony, we are concentrating a very powerful substance. The energy of harmony is so much more powerful than the energy of judgment that far less of it is needed. Its opposite is overwhelmed and we reach a healed state, a balance, a stasis.

One minute of experienced harmony offsets between 1,000-1,000,000 minutes of experienced judgment or fear within our collective consciousness.

So every minute of experienced harmony we contribute to the collective consciousness is a concentrated, powerful, and incredibly efficient agent of change.

Loving-kindness to harmony...
As we begin to generate the energy of harmony, we find that over time we are able to generate more and more of it. Why? This is because, as we develop harmony, we harmonize ourselves. The more harmonious we are, the more harmony we transfer into the collective.

Let this process be intuitive. If we want to wield harmony, simply welcome it in, honor the effort, and forgive yourself for any time spent out of harmony.

Harmony-building is holy work. We must honor ourselves first and we will bless the world with a holy example.

Dating in China 50:1 women to men

Three shocking truths why Chinese men have given up on dating and marriage

C'mon, Sissy, give me all your golden money.
(China Deep Dive) June 15, 2025: Hello, this is China Deep Dive. We have all the information needed to know about China at present. Today's topic is: China’s dating scene.

In China, women are crowding gender imbalanced matchmaking events — sometimes 50 women to 1 man — while men are disappearing. Why are so many women chasing so few men in a country where men supposedly far outnumber women? This deep dive goes into a growing social paradox that’s leaving hearts unheard.

On women sowing their wild oats

Marsha, what are you doing dressed like that? What if Greg sees you or you see him with Mom?

Wild Oats mag (adults only)
Many of us love the idea, or perhaps casually entertain the notion, that the choices we make in life will somehow not a play a factor down the road. It's inconvenient for us to think about because it might put the brakes on whatever desires we want to act on in the moment. Let's consider the tradeoffs.

I learned the hard way that life, though unfair at times, is a giant investment firm that rewards us according to our actions. This is my take: Whoring around is not ideal. There, I said it. It's not ideal. Bam, deal with it. It should be avoided at all costs.

I'm not thinking what I'm thinking, am I? For mature audiences only (buzzday.info)
In an uptight Western country they did an experiment censored in the US: full frontal nudity on TV.
.
Hi, I'm wholesome Marcia Brady.
I see the lust in your eyes. Want to get freaky? Why sowing your wild oats is a terrible mental, emotional, and physical investment you will regret all the days of your life except maybe the days you're doing it, and don't think the Judge ain't seeing you do it neither because what if He is, then who's going to regret it?

The all-German ideal of a WASP family

I understand that in our youth, say, between ages 16 and 25 or thereabouts (maybe 13-31 for some) we're at our physical peak, raging with hormones, desiring to have a blast in life before settling and turning ourselves in to start serving a long marriage sentence with family and kids around our mid 20s or early 30s.

Listen, isn't it time to start dating conservative?
I'm not a prude. I'm all for having a blast since our youth is really short and life only offers a one-way ticket to that other thing (nonlife). However, I suggest that whoring around should not be part of the package called a fun life.

Being loose sexually isn't all it's cracked up to be, at least not in the end. All it ever leaves behind is -- well, sure, along with some great memories -- is regret and feeling dirty. Yeah, sure, it feels great in the moment while doing what the body desires, but when its all said and done, we're left holding the short end of the stick. Hear me out.

Maybe we never catch an STI that harms us physically, but mentally and emotionally a promiscuous lifestyle carries a heavy price, a boatload of baggage like heartbreak, infidelity (cheating), distrust, and a lack of intimacy.

Sensitives should think twice about carnal fun.
Once we finish sowing our wild oats and decide it's time for a sweet harvest, I'm saying we will not be reaping oatmilk or drinking the cream of the crop. We will mostly likely be forced to settle for the bottom of the barrel -- rejects, washed up single moms who no one really desires for marriage or a serious relationship as they once did when they were in their prime.

What could be worse than a man in his 40s or 50s with a beer gut who looks like he's carrying twins, balding with a dead-end job? For guys who decide to get a younger woman in her prime to settle down versus a decade or more older, don't think for a second that it's a win just because she's a decade younger. Don't think that she's somehow not from the bottom of the barrel neither.

The cute face she has and the fit body do not play a role in her character, not at all. She won't have a problem being sneaky, blowing a younger stud off behind your back and lying to your face about it with no shame about it at all; not to mention that she deep down desires a physically young looking, fun stud rather than dealing with your E.D. old arse anyways.

Fun now, tears later
Bad tattoo ideas that make it worse
As a self-righteous Christian now, I wish I had had a mentor leading me, teaching me the ways of Lord G and his Word when I was young, in high school or college, so I could be an obedient sheep and not stray or be too black of a sheep murmuring about how everything sucks when we don't get what we want when we want it.

It would have saved me from getting into fun things I had no business getting into like pleasure and relations and drugs and drink and what not.

Hollywood's Jewish SS give us our Nazi ideal?
Like I said in the beginning, our actions are always followed by results, truth and consequences, whether we like it or not. We may not feel the effects right now and right here, in most cases, you know, not all, but most. But believe you me that that vicious dog will catch up to us down the road, years later, and put a mean bite on our rear ends. Eventually it ain't going to be hahaha no more like it once was in the beforetime, the salad days of our youth, when we were having fun.

Conclusion

Don't: Drug-Impaired Driving | NHTSA
The seeds and choices we make and sow or sow and make today will be the harvest of our tomorrows just as surely as the leaf follows the tree, the sun the moon, and the milkshake the cow. Make no mistake. We will bear it all alone or with our spouse, or maybe our friends, and of course our family and companions, and maybe even our workmates and possibly strangers.

Drug-Impaired Driving | NHTSA
We're solely responsible for our life, in addition to all the people around influencing us. In the end, it pays to live and do right by others and by ourselves and not live a sexually loose lifestyle. Not to be too heavy, but take it from me because I partied like The Dickens and had a good old time and am now miserable every day full of regret and shame and punishment by the Judge and forced to write moralizing diatribes to save others from the great heck hole that awaits anyone who dares to even dream of thinking of beginning to ponder doing anything bad. Don't be bad.

Or don't say I didn't tell you so. I could get all preachy and find some Bible quotes that don't really relate directly but you know you shouldn't be doing nothing your granny wouldn't do because they knew how to live back in the good old days unlike now when everything's all loosey goosey and who knows what's going to happen. Take heed, folks, you heard it from me. Word to the wise, guys, don't pee it all away or, alack and alas, the grime reefer awaits with his hand on a jay puffing away like there's no tomorrow and you'll be singing that hippie anthem "Hey hey live for today, sha la la la..." More

Secrets of The Tibetan Book of the Dead

What if A.I. (artificial intelligence) could help explain basic terms around the Tibetan Buddhist classic, a manual of traversing the intermediate state between lives in the process of rebirth known as samsara? That might be useful, a "god" voiceover who mispronounces some words and an ingenue who asks questions. A.I. is usually misleading and hardly replaces a human voice, but if there's an editor behind it, ai can be useful.

Hidden devils and demons all around

Skip to Minute 3:25 for Fengdu Ghost City based on Buddhist and Chinese mythology

The UnXplained: Hidden Devils and Demons Surround Us
(HISTORY) Evil (pāpaNio) is all around us. See more in this compilation from The UnXplained.
First, there was the USA's first known serial killer, Mr. H. H. Holmes from the Chicago World's Fair, the real name of which is World's Columbian Exposition (because Columbia is the USA's little-known first name before reverting to the reptilian name Amerika, not related to Amerigo Vespucci as we are all taught).

Where are the "devils"? They are with the ghosts and demons in the underworld (ancient Greek Hades), Gehenna, or what the ancient Chinese call Fengdu Ghost City (Chinese 丰都鬼城, 豐都鬼城) pinyin Fēngdū Guǐ Chéng, originally 酆都鬼城 [1]).

This is a large complex of Chinese shrines, temples, and monasteries dedicated to the afterlife located on Ming Mountain [2] in Fengdu County, Chongqing municipality, China [3]. It is situated about 110 miles (170 km) downstream from Chongqing on the north bank of the Yangtze River.

The city consists of buildings, structures, dioramas, and statues related to Diyu and Naraka, concepts from Chinese mythology and Buddhism that signify the underworld or hell(s). It is modeled to resemble Youdu, the capital of Diyu.

After the building of the Three Gorges Dam and the rising of the water level of the river it became separated from the city of Fengdu, which was rebuilt higher up the mountainside on the south side of the river [4]. More: Fengdu Ghost City

Trump's lawyer: Trump will be found guilty

Mr. Joebidenshill (Robert De Niro) takes a bite out of the Big Apple's biggest pain in the backside, lambasting Don the John Trump. Trump is not even a New Yorker.

Trump's former White House lawyer says Trump will be found guilty
I told you, Dummy, stop farting.
(Newsweek) Today (May 28, 2024), Trump's former lawyer Ty Cobb warned that the ex-president will likely be found guilty because of jury instructions.

Trump's ex-lawyer predicted this week that the ex-president will be found guilty in his ongoing criminal trial in Manhattan, NY, citing the jury instructions given by New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan.

On Tuesday, former White House lawyer Ty Cobb spoke with Morgan Chalfant of Semafor about Trump's ongoing criminal trial where he is accused of more than 30 felonies and financial fraud surrounding his hush money payments to prostitute and former adult film star Stormy Daniels in 2016.

They can't find me guilty. I'm me!
"If the jury begins deliberations Tuesday afternoon, expect a verdict no later than Friday afternoon. I expect a 'GUILTY' verdict, but only because the jury instructions as urged by the DA (district attorney) and adopted by the judge, over strenuous and well-founded defense objections, virtually require conviction," Cobb said to Semafor.

"I reach this legal conclusion because of my long experience as a federal prosecutor and white collar defense lawyer, my reverence for the rule of law, and despite my view that Trump remains the greatest threat to Democracy in our nation's history," Cobb added.

Newsweek has reached out to Cobb for comment.

Trump appeared in court on Tuesday (today, 5/28/24) in New York for his ongoing criminal trial brought by District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

Trump was indicted last April by Bragg, who said that the ex-president "fraudulently falsified New York business records to conceal crimes that hid damaging information—including a $130,000 hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels—from the public during the 2016 presidential campaign." Mandy Kahn: Peace Reflections (free class)

Mandy Kahn (mandykahn.com), March 13, 2024, edited by Dhr. Seven (ed.), Wisdom Quarterly

Please join Mandy Kahn Wednesday nights at 6:00 pm (Pacific) for Peace Class. Simply click the link to attend; no signup is required.
The following is the text of the talk delivered during last week's class:

THE SEEDS OF WAR, THE SEEDS OF PEACE
What does war sound like, when it is beginning? It sounds like the phrase "those people." Those people. Those people that did not vote the way I did.

Those people who aren't like me. Those people who are wrong-headed. Those people “over there.” That's the beginning of war.

Why? Because that kind of judgment, in a way that blurs people into one lump, a group, rather than encountering each individual with an open mind — that's fuel necessary for war. So the next war, the war that hasn't begun yet — how do we know where it is? How do we find that seed?

The seed is the phrase "those people." The seed is the act of lumping people and pre-judging them critically and harshly at a distance. It is that harshness of judgment, it is that hardness of thought, that is the beginning of war, long before it is a hardness of action.

We know that we are stepping away from the cycle of belligerence when we no longer find ourselves saying the phrase "those people" with judgment. This is because instead, what we hear in our own minds are phrases like, "I hold openness now." "I look forward to meeting that individual person and experiencing their uniqueness."

When we encounter the world individual by individual, with an open mind, we see reasons for compassion everywhere, and our natural compassion effortlessly steps forward. When we stand in front of one person, with our eyes open, with openness in the self, that is when we will see the thing in them that brings forth our natural compassion.

So what does the beginning of the end of all wars look like? It looks like individuals who hold openness rather than hardness. There is an openness to learning about each other. There is no fixed idea about others “at a distance.” There is openness to the person who is present, and compassion for those at a distance.
*
If the phrase "those people" is the genesis of war, the counterbalance is this: I see you. I witness you with an open mind. I witness you with an open heart.

Notice that this is directed at one person; this phrase does not lump people together. Only when we are far from people, and we lump them with a phrase like "those people," can we forget the compassion that is natural to us.

At a distance, we tend to abstract people. We don't witness their humanity, because they aren't there. And in their absence, we abstract them. Only at a distance, where we judge people abstractly with phrases like "I've heard those people are like this" and “I saw on TV that those people are like that," do we step away from an experience of our own true selfhood, our own compassion.

We are, under everything else, beings of peace. Compassion is what is most natural to us. When we allow a mental abstraction, which is what an idea of “those people” is, in contrast to an experience of one unique person, we lose ourselves.

We forget ourselves. The phrase "those people" indicates that we are in the place of the lower mind, where we can have abstraction and extrapolation and assumptions.

On the other hand, when I stand before a person with an open mind, I witness them, and I put myself in a position to experience my higher mind, my authentic self. I put myself in a position to experience that which I am, which is a being of peace.
*
What does world peace look like when it starts to arrive? It looks like a little bit more openness in the minds of a few more people.
*
When we encounter the phrase “those people” paired with harsh judgment, we can simply balance that out with its opposite: an open and compassionate attitude towards one person.

We might choose to employ the phrase, "I am willing to witness this person's humanity. I am open to discovering the unique qualities of this individual. I am open."

It might be more comfortable to think of war happening “over there” — in another country, perhaps — than to realize that the seeds of war begin in day-to-day life, in how we think of each other, how we speak to each other in the marketplace.

But that's where war begins, and it's also where peace begins. Knowing this empowers the individual. You are the point of power when it comes to new war, the next war, because you are the one who decides what you think, and you get to choose how you will think about others, and about yourself.

You get to choose, and war cannot begin without enough people thinking in the way that war requires — thinking in phrases like “those people.” Without enough people willing to think in “those people” terms, war cannot begin.

So you, the individual, with your free and independent mind, with the ability to choose your own thoughts, are at the point of power. And when I say war, I do not only mean war between countries. I also mean belligerence in general. We are the point of power. We seed what is first in our thoughts, and then in our words, and in our ways of relating with others.

When no one is looking, when you are alone with your thoughts, you can seed peace. When you are asked to group people together in harsh judgment, you can make another choice. You can think, I'm open to witnessing each individual's humanity. You can think, I carry compassion for all beings. You can think, I am a place of compassion and a being of peace.

You can think these things, and when you do, war cannot begin in you. When you fill with compassion, and then flow what you are into the collective consciousness, what you are will balance out the seeds of war that are there, so they cannot begin to sprout.

Whether war begins is simply a matter of what our collective consciousness is primarily comprised of. You are an important contributor to that collective consciousness, and so you are a major factor in what is there. You build what is there with your thoughts. You get to choose what you think.

When you see many around you speaking one way, you can speak another way: you can speak the seeds of peace. When you see many encouragements to think of people as groups rather than individuals, you can think in the way that seeds peace: you can think with compassion, and with an openness to the individual.
*
The point of power is always the self. We step out of our power when we say, “I want them to change what they are doing over there.”

We step into our power when we say, I choose to think compassionate thoughts now, and when I do so, I affect what is happening here and what is happening everywhere, including over there.

I am a great contributor, with my thoughts and with my actions. I choose compassionate thoughts now, and I choose compassionate actions now.

War cannot begin without the consent of many. We consent with our thoughts. We must consent by lumping people together, and by being willing to judge harshly.

If enough of us are not willing to give that consent, war cannot begin. If too many of us say, I carry compassion for all beings, there is not enough energy to grow the seeds of war into the experience of war. It takes the consent of many to do so.

Your seeds of peace build a world in which there is never the ability to gather enough consent for war. You seed peace in your thoughts—in your private moments. You seed peace by how you think of others. Think of them with compassion and you build a world in which war cannot begin. (mandykahn.com, PRS.org)
