Secrets of The Tibetan Book of the Dead

What if A.I. (artificial intelligence) could help explain basic terms around the Tibetan Buddhist classic, a manual of traversing the intermediate state between lives in the process of rebirth known as samsara? That might be useful, a "god" voiceover who mispronounces some words and an ingenue who asks questions. A.I. is usually misleading and hardly replaces a human voice, but if there's an editor behind it, ai can be useful.

The Tibetan Book of the Dead (video)

What is the Tibetan Book of the Dead?
(ReligionForBreakfast) The Tibetan Book of the Dead, or the Bardo Thodol, is arguably the most popular Vajrayana Buddhist text in the United States and Europe. Psychologist Carl Jung loved it. So did Beatle John Lennon. But why? What is this text all about?

The practice of subduing demons (video)

Master Sheng Yen (GDD-1111, DVD, 1/15/17); CC Liu, Crystal Q. (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
The woeful realms of hungry ghosts, demons, and evil spirits can become bothersome.

The practice of subduing demons is actually harmful to demons and ghosts
Catholic Christians want to kill and cast out.
Buddhism advocates loving-kindness and compassion (metta and karuna) in delivering all beings, rather than attempting to fight, subdue, or "defeat" demons, malevolent spirits, poltergeists, and bothersome ghosts. More online courses: youtube.com/user/DDMTV05.

Hate and the climate with Greta (video)

VICE News, 9/23/19; LA Times; DS; Crystal Q., Ashley Wells, Seth Auberon, Wisdom Quarterly

"School Strike for the Climate"
The 16-year-old climate super activist Greta Thunberg delivers an over-emotional and hateful speech at the United Nations Climate Summit, where she chides and spits venom at so-called "world leaders" fronting for the capitalist/industrialist movers and shakers with the repeated phrase, "HOW DARE YOU!" She rips them a new one to what effect? It was "Thunberdolts" and lightning, very very frightening, mamma mia, hear her go! Beelzebub, has the devil put his sights on me, on she, on we?!

Mother Teresa (the atheist Catholic saint), like The Beatles and John Lennon and wife Yoko Ono, taught that they prefer pro-peace demonstrations to anti-war protests. Greta, maybe there's something to be said for peaceful campaigns over fights, strikes, invectives, and wrathful condemnations?

Anger and Escapism (sutra)

Ven. Ñanamoli, Kodhana Sutra, "The Wretchedness of Anger" (AN 7.60) from The Practice of Loving-Kindness (Metta), Buddhist Publication Society (BPS.lk), edited by Wisdom Quarterly
Grrr, I'll f'n kill all of you, or if I can't then I'll kill myself! That'll teach you! (Tess_Athey)

(Slipknot, "Eyeless") WARNING: Profanity, shocking levels of anger and aggression! ...How many times have you wanted to kill everything and everyone? Say you'll do it, but you never will. You can't see California without Marlon Brando's eyes! I am my father's son 'cause he's a phantom, a mystery, and that leaves me nothing! How many times have you wanted to die?

Letting go of anger=wise; learning how=smart.
"Disciples, seven things gratifying and helpful to an enemy befall one who falls prey to anger, whether woman or man. What are the seven?

1. "Here, disciples, an enemy wishes for an enemy: 'Let that person be ugly.' Why? No enemy relishes an enemy's beauty. Now when a person is angry, prey to anger, ruled by anger, even if well bathed, well anointed, with well trimmed hair, clothed in white, yet one is ugly through being prey to anger. This is the first thing gratifying and helpful to an enemy that befalls one who falls prey to anger, whether woman or man.

When in the dark, focus on the light.
2. "An enemy also wishes for an enemy: 'Let that person recline in pain.' Why? No enemy relishes an enemy's reclining in comfort. Now when this person is angry, prey to anger, ruled by anger, for all that one may recline on a couch spread with throw rugs, blankets, pillows with deerskin covers, a canopy, and red cushions for head and feet, one nevertheless reclines in pain through being prey to anger. This is the second thing gratifying to an enemy that befalls one who falls prey to anger, whether woman or man.

3. "An enemy also wishes for an enemy: 'Let that person have no prosperity.' Why? No enemy relishes an enemy's prosperity. Now when one is angry, prey to anger, ruled by anger, one mistakes bad for good and one mistakes good for bad, and each being taken wrongly in the other's sense, these things conduce to one's harm and suffering for a long time, through one falling prey to anger. This is the third thing gratifying and helpful to an enemy that befalls one who falls prey to anger, whether woman or man.

Holding on to anger (dosa) is like grasping a hot coal with the intention of harming someone with it. Whether or not anyone else gets burned, you certainly will. - The Buddha
.
4. "An enemy also wishes for an enemy: 'Let that person not be rich.' Why? No enemy relishes an enemy's having riches. Now when a person is angry, prey to anger, should one have riches gained by endeavor, built up by strength of arm, earned by sweat, lawful and lawfully acquired, yet the king's treasury gathers it (in fines) through one falling prey to anger. This is the fourth thing gratifying and helpful to an enemy that befalls one who falls prey to anger, whether woman or man.

5. "An enemy also wishes for an enemy: 'Let that person not be famous.' Why? No enemy relishes an enemy's having fame [renown, esteem]. Now when a person is angry, prey to anger, ruled by anger, what fame one may have acquired by diligence one loses through being prey to anger. This is the fifth thing gratifying and helpful to an enemy that befalls one who falls prey to anger, whether woman or man.

We are surrounded by people and external disturbances. We cannot always live in splendid isolation. Right meditation and mindfulness are not "escapism." They are not meant to provide hiding-places. Instead, they train the mind to face, understand, and surmount what comes up, which means overcoming numerous obstacles in life and meditation. More

6. "An enemy also wishes for an enemy: 'Let that person have no friends.' Why? No enemy relishes an enemy's having friends [being popular]. Now when this person is angry, prey to anger, ruled by anger, the friends one may have, one's companions, relatives and kin, will keep away because of one's anger. This is the sixth thing gratifying and helpful to an enemy that befalls one who falls prey to anger, whether woman or man.

7. "An enemy also wishes for an enemy: 'Let one on the dissolution of the body, after death, reappear in a state of deprivation, in a bad destination, in perdition, even in [the lowest, most terrible] hell.'

Wisdom gives rise to compassion (Kingstone_13).
"Why? No enemy relishes an enemy's (rebirth) in a good destination. Now when this person is angry, prey to anger, ruled by anger, one misconducts oneself in body, speech, and mind, and by this misconduct in body, speech, and mind, on the dissolution of the body, after death, one reappears in a woeful state of deprivation, in a bad destination, in perdition, even in [the lowest, most terrible] hell, through one falling prey to anger. This is the seventh thing gratifying and helpful to an enemy that befalls one who is angry, whether woman or man."

When anger does possess a person,
one looks ugly; one reclines in pain;
What benefit one may come by
One misconstrues as mischance;
One loses property (through fines)
Because one has been working harm
Through acts of body and speech
By angry passion [in mind] overwhelmed;
The wrath and rage that madden one
Gain one a name of ill-repute;
One's fellows, relatives, and kin
Will seek to shun one from afar;
And anger is the parent of misery:
This fury does so cloud the mind
Of a person that one cannot discern
This fearful inner danger.
An angry person no meaning knows,
No angry person sees the Dharma,
So wrapped in darkness, as if blind,
     Is one whom anger dogs.

Someone a man in anger hurts,
But when one's anger is later spent
With difficulty or with ease,
One suffers as if seared by fire.
One's look betrays the sulkiness
Of some dim smoky smoldering glow.
When may flare up an anger-blaze
That sets the world of ours aflame.
One has no shame or conscience curb,
No kindly words come forth from one,
There is no island refuge for
     The person whom anger dogs.

Such acts as will ensure remorse,
Such as are far from the true Dharma:
It is of these that I would tell,
     So harken to my words.

Anger makes person a parricide,
Anger makes one a matricide,
Anger can make one slay a saint (arhat)
As one would kill an ordinary person.
Nursed and reared by a mother's care,
One comes to look upon the world,
Yet the common person in anger kills
The being who gave one life.
No being but seeks one's own good,
None dearer to one than oneself,
Yet people in anger kill themselves,
Distraught for reasons manifold:
For crazed they stab themselves with daggers,
In desperation swallow poison,
Perish hanged by ropes, or fling
Themselves over a precipice.
Yet how their life-destroying acts
Bring death unto themselves as well,
That they cannot discern, and that
     Is the ruin anger breeds.

This secret place, with anger's aid,
Is where mortality sets the snare.
To blot it out with discipline,
With vision, strength, and understanding,
To blot each fault out one by one,
The wise person should apply oneself,
Training likewise in the true Dharma;
"Let smoldering be far from us."
Then rid of wrath and free from anger,
And rid of lust and free from envy,
Tamed, and with anger left behind,
     Taintless, they reach nirvana.

"You will not be 'punished' for you anger; you will be punished by your anger."

Judaism: God and Gays cause Earthquakes

(LINK) Rabbi Levin provides Biblical and Rabbinical citations that connect disasters in general, such as earthquakes and floods (tsunamis) in particular to gay sex...

"G-D shakes the Earth because gays shake their male members where they shouldn't," according to Jewish (Old Testament) scholar Rabbi Yehuda Levin ("The Fear Kashes" on blip.tv; see full video below from the archives of the Rabbi's weekly radio program are heard on 6.20 AM (in NYC) every Sunday night from 12:00 to 1:00 am.

Many fundamentalist Christians, whose religion is intricately tied to Judaism, agree.

() August 24, 2011 - Using biblical passages, Rabbi Yehuda Levin tries to blame east coast earthquakes (Virginia, DC, New York City and Haiti, Dominican Republic) on God's wrath against homosexuals and gay marriage.

Using this logic, one could show that God hates Jews even more than he hates homosexuals. In actuality, God does not hate anybody. Maybe Rabbi Yehuda Levin does. But he notes that he does not dislike gay people. And he is not the only one to read Judeo-Christian scripture in this way.

The New York rabbi claims gay marriage and the earthquake that shook the East Coast last Tuesday are directly connected. In a video uploaded to YouTube (and soon taken down as "hate speech"), Levin says gay rights legislation, like the gay marriage law passed in New York, are responsible for earthquakes, like the one that just struck Virginia/Washington, D.C.

"The Talmud states, 'You have shaken your male member in a place where it doesn't belong. I, too, will shake the Earth,'" Levin says. "We don't hate homosexuals," he says. "I feel bad for homosexuals. It's a revolt against God and, literally, there's hell to pay."

Meditation as War (with Mara)

Pat Macpherson (Wisdom Quarterly)
"Wrath" (vyapada) is negative in Buddhism. Is it ever useful? (butuzou-world.com)

BHAVANA, West Virginia - The editors of Wisdom Quarterly spent the last two weeks on retreat in rural forest meditation cabins. The cicadas, heat lightning, sudden storms, Mothman, and chilly nights, it seemed more like exotic Asia than the back woods of America.
  • Christian stories about Sakka (Magha of Macala) call him "St. Michael," a stream-enterer and ruler of two lower heavens, who defends humans in battle opposing the titans and serpents.
Buddhism is deep, very deep. People mainly see the discourses or sutra collection, rarely seeing the source material, just hearing about it secondhand. They rarely see the meditator's self-discipline or Vinaya collection. And almost no one ever studies the "Higher Teachings" or Abhidharma collection.

Sitting in a magnificent wooden hall with high ceilings, surrounded by a tall forest and peaceful meditators from all over the East Coast, I found myself mad like the fighting Irish.

Maybe I went wrong the very moment I thought of meditation as adversarial. But I did. I saw Mara, the dark tempter figure, as an opponent. I went up against his armies, the Cankers of sensual-desires, desiring eternal existence, clinging to wrong-views, and ignorance.

Like a wrathful Japanese deity, I thought I should fight. But all fighters are caught up in fighting until they sue for peace. Until this retreat, no one mentioned Mara had ten more armies, the Fetters binding beings to the Wheel of Samsara:

The first five are called "lower fetters" that bind or fetter us to rebirth in sensual realm planes. The latter five are called "higher fetters" that bind beings to planes of rebirth in the two higher realms, the fine-material and immaterial spheres (A.IX.67-68; A.X.13; D.33, etc.)

The Five Hindrances are hard to overcome if we cannot relax and let go. But these Taints (asavas) and Fetters (samyojanas) which defile minds and hearts are even more subtle adversaries.

The great Earth shook (see photos). Mara is no fool. He does not come on a war elephant. He sends seductive daughters. He does not confront. He subverts with pride and delusion. He does not want beings to end up in the hells. He just never wants them to escape the cycle of rebirth.

I have much to learn.

Girl on Girl Fight

The teenagers seen in a video assaulting a 16-year-old could face life in prison.

The principle message of the East is ahimsa (nonviolence, nonharming). Nevertheless, the message has not reached these cheerleaders, who mercilessly beat a friend. StudentNews (CNN) reports.

Story Highlights
  • Eight Florida teens to be tried as adults in videotaped beating case
  • Video shows 16-year-old girl punched by other girls
  • 21% of girls age 17 say they've assaulted someone, the Justice Dept. reports
  • The teens have "disconnect" between thoughts and actions, psychologist says
  • Practical Buddhist solutions to resolving anger
  • Yoga in prisons
(CNN) -- Eight Florida teenagers -- six of them girls -- will be tried as adults and could be sentenced to life in prison for their alleged roles in the videotaped beating of another teen, the state attorney's office said Thursday.

The teenagers seen in a video assaulting a 16-year-old could face life in prison.

The suspects, who range in age from 14 to 18, all face charges of kidnapping, which is a first-degree felony, and battery, said Chip Thullbery, a spokesman for the Polk County state attorney. Three of them are also charged with tampering with a witness.

Everyone involved in the case was under a gag order imposed by a judge. The only attorney for the teens who has been publicly identified did not return calls from CNN, and his assistant cited the gag order as the reason. The teens are scheduled for their first appearance in court Friday.

The video shows a brutal scene: The 16-year-old victim is punched, kneed and slapped by other girls. She huddles in the fetal position, or stands and screams at her attackers, but the assault continues. Authorities say the eight teens said they were retaliating for insults posted on the Internet by the attack victim.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd called the March 30 attack "animalistic."

"I've been involved in law enforcement for 35 years, and I've seen a lot of extremely violent events, but I've never seen children, 14 to 18 years of age, engage in this conduct for a 30-minute period of time and then make these video clips," he said. Police say the teens planned to post the video on YouTube.
The victim, a 16-year-old from Lakeland, Florida, was hospitalized, and still has blurred vision, hearing loss, and a swollen face, her mother told CNN on Wednesday.

The video shows only girls doing the beating; Judd said the boys acted as lookouts.

The idea of girls administering a vicious beating so they can post the video online may seem shocking, but it's becoming an increasingly common scenario, according to experts and news reports.
A search for "girl fight" on YouTube gets thousands of results, and a suggestion to also try "girl fight at school, boy girl fight" and other search terms. There's at least one Web site devoted exclusively to videos of girls fighting.

In 2003, 25 percent of high school girls said they had been in a physical fight in the past year, according to a survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (The figure for boys was 40.5 percent.)

A Justice Department report released in 2006 showed that by age 17, 21 percent of girls said they had assaulted someone with the intent to cause serious harm.

Frank Green is executive director of Keys to Safer Schools, a group that studies and tries to prevent school violence. He said he's not sure whether girls have actually become more violent, or whether there's just more awareness of their fights.

"In one respect, girls have always been more vicious than boys," Green said. "Their violence is of a personal nature." He said boys usually have some focus and a concrete goal when they fight. "But girls want to cause pain and make the other girl feel bad," he said.

Judd, the Polk County sheriff, said an important part of the plan in the Lakeland attack was to post the video of the beating on YouTube to humiliate and embarrass the victim.

"It's the next stage of cyberbullying," psychologist Susan Lipkins said. "They want to show what they're doing."

"Our kids are being peer pressured, in another sense of a trend, to put these shock videos out there at other peoples' expense," said Talisa Lindsay, the victim's mother. "And I hope that it doesn't come to the point where there's more people's lives that are being affected by having to take a beating for entertainment, or possibly being killed."
The suspects didn't have a chance to post the video online before police moved in and seized it, Judd said. The Sheriff's Department made it public, and it wound up on YouTube anyway. Judd recognizes the irony.

"In a perverted sense, we were feeding into exactly what the kids wanted," he said. "But according to Florida law, [the video] is public record, and it's going to be in the public domain whether we agree with that or not."

Judd said the suspects showed no remorse when they were arrested and booked.

"They were laughing and joking about, 'I guess we won't get to go to the beach during spring break.' And one ... asked whether she could go to cheerleading practice," he said.

Lipkins, the psychologist, says there's a "disconnect between their actions and their thoughts."

"They think the entire society is doing it, and they think it's funny. So they put it on YouTube. And I don't think they expect kids to get really hurt, and they also don't expect to get really caught." Source

HOW TO DEVELOP LOVING-KINDNESS: Counteracting Anger

Dharmachari Seven

There are a number of ways to cultivate and "bring into being" (bhavana) wholesome states of mind/heart (citta) to counteract normal human anger. While it is "normal" to get angry, it is not normal to cause harm on account of that anger or to let anger remain. A charioteer steers the horses pulling her or him along; others are merely holding the reins, the Buddha explained.

The Dharma has a number of helpful ways to deal with annoyance and irritability that has become full blown anger, hate, or wrath.

  • Substitution: cultivate thoughts of loving-kindness to replace the anger that has arisen.
  • Contemplate the results of remaining angry (the harm, the consequences, the regression in the slow evolution to a superior, more profitable character).
  • Leave, run away, avoid the situation that is inspiring anger.
  • Stop giving unwise attention to thoughts that give rise to anger.
  • Compliment rather than criticize; simply searching the mind for something to compliment results in finding it -- we'll find what we look for because we look for it.
  • Reflect: Three things give rise to anger. Someone's actions, speech, or intentions (physical, verbal, or mental karma). If it is one's deeds that annoy, focus on that person's speech or intentions. If it is that person's speech, focus on that person's deeds or intentions, and so on. If, however, all three are annoying (because you are able to see, hear, and read minds or deduce intentions) then reflect in the following way. If this worthy person continues in this way, s/he will certainly land in an unfortunate destination. Done sincerely, this will give rise to compassion and pity (altruistic sympathy).
  • Destroy your enemy. It may sound trite, but Eastern wisdom suggests that the best way to utterly annihilate your foe is to make that person a friend (even if that person doesn't know her/his new status).
  • Yoga, Tai Chi, Chi Gong, and even the martial arts (which emphasize mutual respect, confidence, stress management, and avoiding fights) can be very helpful in converting or dispelling angry emotions parked in the body:
