The Girl Samurai Master: Sasaki Rui

Kabukimono ancient cross dresser
Real-life samurai Sasaki Rui (佐々木 累), or Rui-San, was a Japanese swordswoman, Onna-musha and kenjutsu expert of the early Edo period (mid-17th century). She was known as the "Strangely Dressed Female Sword Master" [1, 2, 3].

Life of Sasaki Rui
Sasaki was born in Koga domain, located in Shimōsa province (modern-day Koga, Ibaraki), exact birthdate unknown. Her father Sasaki Uōto was a member of a clan of kenjutsu masters in service to Doi Toshikatsu and was thoroughly versed in the martial arts.

Since Rui-San had no brothers and her attempts to take a husband ended in divorce, upon her father's death from illness the Sasaki clan name became extinct [1, 2, 3].

Rui-San went to Edo, where she rented a house in present-day Asakusa and began teaching the martial arts.

At the same time that her teaching was becoming well-known, she began to be famous for her unusual dress:

Haori crepe formal Japanese jacket
She would leave the house wearing a black silk crepe haori (a man's garment at the time) emblazoned with the Sasaki family crest, her hair done up in an indoor style with hairpins, and wearing the samurai's long and short swords [1, 2, 3].

At that time, the ruffians known as kabukimono or hatamoto yakko were running rampant in Edo, and Rui-San began fighting with the "Shiroe" gang, among other groups [1, 2]. More
What was their religion?
Various samurai clans struggled for power during the Kamakura shogunateZen Buddhism spread among the samurai in the 13th century and helped shape their standards of conduct, particularly in overcoming the fear of death and [the wrongdoing of] killing. Among the general populace devotional Pure Land Buddhism was favored however. More

Marriage?
Samurai with wives and concubines, 1804
Samurai had arranged marriages, which were engineered by a go-between of the same or higher rank. While for those samurai in the upper ranks this was a necessity (as most had few opportunities to ever meet women), this was a formality for lower-ranked samurai.

Most samurai married women from a samurai family, but for lower-ranked samurai, marriages with commoners were permitted. In these marriages a dowry was brought by the woman and was used to set up the couple's new household.

A samurai could take concubines, but their backgrounds were checked by higher-ranked samurai. In many cases, taking a concubine was akin to a marriage. Kidnapping a concubine, although common in fiction, would have been shameful, if not criminal. More

Girlfight: Mykala Skinner vs. Simone Biles

Olympians Simone Biles and MyKayla Skinner's drama explained (people.com)

Simone Biles says she was BLOCKED by former teammate MyKayla Skinner | 2024 Olympics | E! News
(E! News) July 31, 2024: Simone Biles reveals she has seemingly been blocked by former teammate MyKayla Skinner amid Team USA’s Olympic victory. The retired gymnast previously apologized for comments she made about U.S. gymnast’s work ethic. Full story: eonline.com/videos/235984... #simonebiles #teamusa #enews

MyKayla Skinner
, not to be confused with nose twitching McKayla Maroney, is very jealous of the great gold medalist and most winningest Simone Arianne Biles Owens and her Team USA teammates. Or so it seems from recent posts.

(AP) Olympic medal-winning gymnast MyKayla Skinner Harmer is drawing criticism for a since-deleted YouTube video in which she said the U.S. Center for SafeSport is making it difficult for coaches to do their job.

Skinner, who won silver on vault at the Tokyo Olympics, said coaches “can’t get on athletes” out of fear of being reported to SafeSport, an independent entity that handles allegations of abuse from various governing bodies across the U.S. Olympic movement.

“[Coaches] have to be really careful about what they say, which in some ways is really good, but at the same time, to get where you need to be in gymnastics, you have to be…a little aggressive and a little intense,” Skinner said.

The 27-year-old Skinner, who retired after Tokyo, seemed to draw a direct line between the lack of structured coaching and most of the five-woman team [Team USA] that will represent the U.S. at the Paris Olympics. Girl fight: AOC v Greene, Congress catfight

BREAKING NEWS: All hell breaks loose when Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene directly insults Black Jasmine Crockett
(Forbes Breaking News) May 16, 2024: At tonight's House Oversight Committee hearing, [white] Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's (R-GA) insult of [Black] Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) plunged the hearing into chaos, particularly when Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) jumped in and took sides against Greene. Then Crockett got in the best line of the night, openly mocking Greene in the form of a hypothetical question about badly bleached blond hair and a butch body. Ehem, Marjorie? Sadly, the old white men in charge did not understand the question.

MAGA Reps. Gaetz and Boebert get heckled at the Trump circus trial

Girls used to be so classy. Now it's all petty ego.
On Thursday, May 16, 2024, evening, a House Oversight Committee hearing intended to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt quickly devolved into a heated and disorderly exchange between Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Marjorie Taylor Greene.

The session was initially convened to address Garland's refusal to comply with a subpoena for an audio recording of Pres/ Biden's interview with a special counsel. However, tensions flared when Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene made a derogatory comment about Rep. Jasmine Crockett's appearance, prompting an intense response from [AOC] Rep. Ocasio-Cortez [who got all Puerto Rican or Cuban and New Yorker with a kind of, Oh no you diddent, aw hell no you diddent kind of vibe, made worse by the addition of "baby girl."

During the hearing, Greene interrupted Crockett with a personal attack, stating, "I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading."

This remark led to audible groans in the chamber and a plea for order from Committee Chairman James Comer.

Ocasio-Cortez immediately called for Greene's words to be "taken down," a procedural move allowing the speaker to withdraw or amend the words if deemed inappropriate.

I'm from New York. I eat Greenes for lunch.
Greene's retort, "Are your feelings hurt?" was met with Ocasio-Cortez's sharp response, "Oh girl, baby girl! Don’t even play!"

Ocasio-Cortez insisted that Greene's comments were unacceptable and demanded a sincere apology to Rep. Crockett, rejecting any insincere or smarmy apologies.

Despite the heated back-and-forth, Greene eventually agreed to strike her words but refused to apologize, further insulting Ocasio-Cortez's intelligence.

You want some, B*tch? - Are you talkin to me?
The situation escalated when Rep. Jamie Raskin asked Greene again if she would apologize, to which she defiantly replied, "You will never get an apology out of me."

The contentious exchange highlighted deep divisions and personal animosities among committee members, drawing significant attention and criticism.

Rep. Crockett later expressed her frustration on social media, emphasizing the inappropriate and chaotic behavior displayed by some members of Congress.

Heroic girl fights IDF soldiers: Ahed Tamimi

MSNBC, 9/22/22; Democracy Now! 2018; Ashley Wells, Sheldon S. (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
When they thought I was a Ukrainian standing up to Russian invaders, the mainstream narrators were all behind me. When they found out I was a Palestinian standing up to IDF invaders, silence.
After going viral for slapping an Israeli (IDF militant) soldier, Ahed Tamimi shares her story
They Called Me a Lioness
(MSNBC) From a young age (9), Palestinian lion cub Ahed Tamimi ("the Rosa Parks of Palestine") became a symbol of resistance, helping to shine a spotlight back on the plight of Palestinians living in the "[Illegally] Occupied Territories," Israel's dismissive name for its settler colonial projects in the West Bank (which it grew by supporting Jewish-occupier violence against Palestinians) and Gaza (from which it withdrew but still terrorizes on a daily basis). Now, Tamimi’s out with a memoir, They Called Me a Lioness: A Palestinian Girl's Fight for Freedom, to tell her side of the story in her own words. Co-author and Palestinian-American journalist Dena Takruri joins Mehdi to discuss.

Meet Ahed Tamimi, 17, West Bank activist jailed for 8 months for slapping Israeli soldier
Ahed Tamimi: Girl who Fought
(Democracy Now!) Aug. 6, 2018:  Seventeen-year-old Palestinian activist Ahed Tamimi has been freed from Israeli prison after eight months behind bars. Known to some as "the Rosa Parks of Palestine," Tamimi became a heroine to Palestinians and people around the world last year [2017] after a viral video showed her slapping a heavily armed Israeli Army soldier near her family’s home in the illegally occupied [by Israeli "settlers" trying to colonize the] West Bank.

The incident was prompted by Tamimi learning that her cousin had been gravely wounded in a headshot by an Israeli soldier who shot him in the head using a rubber-coated steel projectile [misleading called a "rubber bullet" as if it just bounced harmless off victims when in fact the massive energy transmitted is deadly, blinding, and capable of breaking bones and exploding organs, though sometimes it is less lethal than uncoated lead bullets].

A Girl who Fought Back
Video of Tamimi confronting the soldier went viral, elevating her into a symbol of Palestinian resistance. She was soon arrested in the middle of the night IDF raid and charged with assault for slapping the armed IDF terrorist in an Israeli military court. She was sentenced to eight months in an Israeli prison and celebrated her 17th birthday behind bars. Her mother was also arrested and charged with "incitement" for, in part, daring to stream the video online that showed the interaction between Tamimi and the heavily armed Israeli soldier. Tamimi and her mother, Nariman, were released in late July. Democracy Now! speaks with Ahed Tamimi from her home in the West Bank village of Nabi Saleh.

Dior drops Hadid for Israeli, faces boycott

The luxury fashion brand is facing boycott calls after making the swap.
I'm way hotter than that Arab Bella
Luxury fashion brand Christian Dior is facing boycott calls on social media after Turkish and Israeli sources reported on Monday that it had replaced American model and longtime brand ambassador Bella Hadid with Israeli model May Tager in its latest ad campaign.

Neither Hadid, whose father is Palestinian, nor the brand, has commented on her alleged replacement, which was initially reported in Türkiye’s Yeni Safak and an Israeli blog called Fashion Forward, raising questions of the reports’ veracity even as there were calls to #BoycottDior on X (formerly Twitter).
Tager appeared to be the star of the brand’s new holiday campaign ad, according to posts shared on her Instagram last week.

Bella dared to post this on IG
Hadid became the first Dior brand ambassador of Palestinian descent in 2016 and has repeatedly used her celebrity to advocate for Palestinian rights.

However, she remained silent for several weeks after Hamas’ October 7 attack and Israel’s subsequent devastating bombardment of Gaza.

In an Instagram post on October 26, she said her phone number had been leaked online, leading to her receiving “hundreds of death threats” every day.

Writing in her first Instagram post following the declaration of war, Hadid vowed not to be intimidated, explaining, “The people and children of Palestine, especially in Gaza, cannot afford our silence. We are not brave – they are.”

The model emphasized that she mourned for Israeli families who had lost loved ones on October 7, as well as the residents of Gaza who endured “generational trauma” above and beyond the immediate crisis.

“It is important to understand the hardship of what it is to be Palestinian, in a world that sees us as nothing more than terrorists resisting peace,” she wrote, describing her family’s suffering during the Nakba [the Catastrophe], the forced expulsion of 750,000 Palestinians from their land in 1948 by the founders of the [settler colonial] state of Israel.

"There is an urgent humanitarian crisis in Gaza that must be attended to. Wars have laws – and they must be upheld, no matter what."

Bella Hadid, whose siblings Gigi and Anwar are also models, revealed in 2021 that she had lost a significant amount of work by supporting Palestine and had even had friends leave her over her advocacy. While Dior has faced calls to drop her before, the brand did not previously give in. More

18-year-old girl fights cops (bodycam)

Let this be a lesson to all you kids. Mouth off to cops all you want. But don't. take. drugs. Because then you seem really stoopid. Drunk in public is bad but wasted on pharmaceutical pills, dirty heroin, or fentanyl-laced drugs is worse. The cops must love to choke people out and break their ribs from kicking them on the sides when the cameras are off. Here they are on their best behavior. And one gal is feeling dumb to see how dumb she looked on camera.
