Swedish girls can't fight (except this one)

(VoteSport) She looks like an angel, fights like a demon, and mauls people: Sweden's Smilla "The Hurricane" Sundell.

The mind imagines its reality?
Sucker Punch
is an American fantasy action film directed by Zack Snyder and co-written by Snyder and Steve Shibuya. It is Snyder's first film based on an original concept [6, 7]. The film stars Emily Browning as "Babydoll" (and another named "Sweet Pea"), young women who are committed to a mental institution. As Babydoll collects items she needs to escape, she enters a series of fantasy worlds where she and her fellow inmates are strong, experienced warriors. Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Carla Gugino, and Oscar Isaac also star. (Who can explain it?) More

The system that controls us all

What if after all that suffering, all that listening to socially woke punk rock of the Eighties (like the Not So Quiet on the Western Front compilation by Jello Biafra's Alternative Tentacles Records), things suddenly became clear? Now they made sense. Now everything made sense. And all the pain and suffering that preceded came to fruition as understanding. It's possible. Here one brave person has a realization about the thing everyone else is missing. That is, what is controlling the illusion?

Asian Action: "Angel Warriors" (铁血娇娃)

SOUTHEAST ASIA - "Angel Warriors" tells the story of five girls from the city. They go on a rural getaway surrounded by lush jungles and beautiful beaches. But there's trouble in paradise when an excursion into the forest leads them into a dangerous encounter with local criminals, who are endangering the surrounding ancient Buddhist cultural relics. However, the criminals didn't count on one thing: These aren't docile city gals who cower in the face of danger. They are vicious vixens who decide to take decisive action like they just saw "Sucker Punch." More

Our Continued Wandering On (sutra)

Dhr. Seven, Amber Larson, Wisdom Quarterly; Ven. Soma Thera, The Illusion of Samsara

Once the Buddha was staying at Ayodhya on the river Ganges, and there he said:

"Meditators, if this river Ganges in any way were to bring forth a ball of foam and an intelligent person were to see it, reflect on it, and thoroughly examine it, then, to that person seeing, reflecting on, and thoroughly examining it, that ball of foam would appear worthless, empty, and without essence. Indeed, meditators, how can there be essence in a ball of foam?

The Buddha reflected in a gorgeous pool of light (Gift-of-light/flickr.com)

"Meditators, in the same way, a meditator sees, reflects on, and thoroughly examines FORM of any kind, past, future, or present, internal (pertaining to self) or external (pertaining to objects), coarse or fine, low or high, far or near.

"To the meditator who sees, reflects on, and thoroughly examines it, form would appear worthless, empty, and without essence. Indeed, meditators, how can there be essence in form?

"If, meditators, the heavy rains of autumn were to in any way give rise to a popping bubble, and an intelligent person were to see it, reflect on it, and thoroughly examine it, then, to that person who sees, reflects on, and thoroughly examines it, that bubble would appear worthless, empty, and without essence. Indeed, meditators, how can there be essence in a bubble?

"Meditators, in the same way, a meditator sees, reflects on, and thoroughly examines FEELING of any kind, past, future, or present, internal or external, coarse or fine, low or high, far or near. To the medtitator who sees, reflects on, and thoroughly examines it, feeling would appear worthless, empty, and without essence. Indeed, meditators, how can there be essence in feeling?

"If, in any manner, meditators, a mirage quivers at midday in the last month of the hot season, and an intelligent person were to see it, reflect on it, and thoroughly examine it, then, to that person who sees, reflects on, and examines it, that mirage would appear worthless, empty, and without essence. Indeed, meditators, how can there be essence in a mirage?

NOTE: The Buddha is not saying a mirage does not exist. It, indeed, has a kind of conditioned existence (utterly dependent on its factors and not independent of them). In any case, it is certainly not what it appears to be. It is empty, impersonal, without continuity (since it arises and passes away with its constituents). The same is true of the groups or "heaps," which the Buddha called the Five Aggregates (skhandha), the psycho-physical constituents of our illusory existence.

"Meditators, in the same way, a meditator sees, reflects on, and thoroughly examines PERCEPTION of any kind, past, future, or present, internal or external, coarse or fine, low or high, far or near. To the medtiator who sees, reflects on, and thoroughly examines it, perception would appear worthless, empty, and without essence. Indeed, meditators, how can there be essence in perception?

"If, meditators, a person in search of heartwood were to enter a forest with a sharp axe and were to see a giant young banana tree growing faultlessly, cut it at the root, cut off its top, and strip the rind from the stalk, that person by stripping it would not come even to sapwood, how much the less to heartwood?

"Were an intelligent person to see it, reflect on it, and thoroughly examine it, then, to that person who sees, reflects on, and thoroughly examines it, that banana stalk would appear worthless, empty, and without essence. Indeed, meditators, how can there be essence in a banana stalk?

"Meditators, in the same way, a meditator sees, reflects on, and thoroughly examines FORMATIONS of any kind, past, future, or present, internal or external, coarse or fine, low or high, far or near. To the meditator who sees, reflects on, and thoroughly examines them, formations would appear worthless, empty, and without essence. Indeed, meditators, how can there be essence in formations?

"If, meditators, an illusionist or an illusionist's apprentice were to produce an illusion at the intersection of four roads, and an intelligent person were to see it, reflect on it, and thoroughly examine it, then, to that person who sees, reflects on, and thoroughly examines it, that illusion would appear worthless, empty, and without essence. Indeed, meditators, how can there be essence in an illusion?

"Meditators, in the same way, a meditator sees, reflects on, and thoroughly examines CONSCIOUSNESS of any kind, past, future, or present, internal or external, coarse or fine, low or high, far or near. To the meditator who sees, reflects on, and thoroughly examines it, consciousness would appear worthless, empty, and without essence. Indeed, meditators, how can there be essence in consciousness?

Mara's daughters try to delude Siddhartha
"The instructed noble disciple [as distinguished from the uninstructed ignorant worldling] who sees thus turns away from form, turns away from feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness [or the Five Aggregates, as anything to cling to as a self].

"[With mind and heart naturally] turning away [after seeing things just as they are], one becomes detached. With detachment one becomes free. When free one knows, 'This is freedom!' And one understands, 'Birth has been exhausted, the spiritual life has been lived, what ought to be done has been done, and there will be no more of this [disappointment and delusion] to come.'"

Death and Disenchantment with Rebirth (video)

Dhr. Amber Larson, Wisdom Quarterly, Ven. Soma Thera, Disenchantment and Samsara
"Reality" (samsara)? This reality is no reality; it is unreal (maya)!

Uninstructed worldly minded people do not want to think of DEATH and do not like any pointed reference made to it by others.

(They would be right if there were nothing that could be done, no way to awaken from this illusion of endless life, death, rebirth, redeath...)

Such uncontemplative, uninstructed people deliberately shut their minds to the fact that death is right there waiting. We reject the possibility of a future life. And occupying ourselves only with things pertaining to this life, we seek to immerse ourselves in the ephemeral joys of the five strands of sense pleasure in a futile attempt to find lasting satisfaction.

So tired of this unconscious life, this useless wandering on in search of sense-satisfaction

To make such people think seriously about what is perhaps the most decisive event of life we have to reckon with -- an event that will determine our future lives -- the Buddha stated: "Every householder (lay disciple) and every one who has gone forth should constantly reflect, 'I am subject to death.'"

The uninstructed worldly-minded person sees others dying all around but through intoxication with a pride-of-life one acts as if one were immortal. One sees the victims of disease all around but due to intoxication with a pride-of-health one acts as if one were immune from disease.

Enjoying the first flush of life (our springtime), one sees many an old person in the last stages of decrepitude. But owing to a pride-of-youth, through becoming intoxicated with it, one acts as if one may never grow old.

(BWSA) The Process of Rebirth with comedian Ven. Ajahn Brahm (Brahmavamso Mahathera, born Peter Betts in London in 1951) is a Theravada Buddhist monk in the Thai forest tradition, a disciple of Ajahn Chah. He is Abbot of Bodhinyana Monastery, Serpentine, Western Australia.

And one sees many people losing their wealth and becoming poor suddenly, but being intoxicated with a pride-of-power or position, one does not pity them, does not sympathize with them, and does not think that one too might well be overtaken by similar misfortune.

The Moon, Moon, not my finger!
So intoxicated by these, and many other intoxicants, one behaves like a man beside himself, heedless of right and wrong, heedless of this world and the world(s) to come, enjoying fleeting pleasures, like a crab in a cooking pot before the water heats up enough to kill it.

Even in one's dreams one does not suspect that harm and suffering might befall, but when it actually does, one loses control, weeps, and wails, "Why me! Why me!"

Reflection on death, if rightly practiced by a person, opens our eyes to the individual essence of every form of being, its real nature. It removes the poison of pride, which makes us heedless.

We see according to the compassionate words of the Buddha:

"Uncertain is life, certain is death;
It is necessary that I should die;
At the close of my life there is death.
Life is indeed unsure --
But death is sure, death is sure."

But there's hope!

"In one who ever and again
Reflects on death's hard hand of pain
The drive for gross material gain
Goes limp like hide snaked through with rain."

Atheists: No God, no reason, just whining

Charlotte Allen (LA Times, May 17, 2009)
Superstar atheists are motivated by anger -- and boohoo victimhood.

I can't stand atheists -- but it's not because they don't believe in God. It's because they're crashing bores.

Other people, most recently the British cultural critic Terry Eagleton in his new book, Faith, Reason, and Revolution, take to task such superstar nonbelievers as Oxford biologist Richard Dawkins (The God Delusion) and political journalist Christopher Hitchens (God Is Not Great) for indulging in a philosophically primitive opposition of faith and reason that assumes that if science can't prove something, it doesn't exist.

My problem with atheists is their tiresome -- and way old -- insistence that they are being oppressed and their fixation with the fine points of Christianity. What -- did their Sunday school teachers flog their behinds with a Bible when they were kids?

Read Dawkins, or Hitchens, or the works of fellow atheists Sam Harris (The End of Faith) and Daniel Dennett (Breaking the Spell), or visit an atheist website or blog (there are zillions of them, bearing such titles as "God Is for Suckers," "God Is Imaginary," and "God Is Pretend"), and your eyes will glaze over as you peruse -- again and again -- the obsessively tiny range of topics around which atheists circle like water in a drain.

First off, there's atheist victimology: Boohoo, everybody hates us 'cuz we don't believe in God. Although a recent Pew Forum survey on religion found that 16% of Americans describe themselves as religiously unaffiliated, only 1.6% call themselves atheists, with another 2.4% weighing in as agnostics (a group despised as wishy-washy by atheists).

You or I might attribute the low numbers to atheists' failure to win converts to their unbelief, but atheists say the problem is persecution so relentless that it drives tens of millions of God-deniers into a closet of feigned faith, like gays before Stonewall.

In his online "Atheist Manifesto," Harris writes that "no person, whatever his or her qualifications, can seek public office in the United States without pretending to be certain that ... God exists." The evidence? Antique clauses in the constitutions of six -- count 'em -- states barring atheists from office. More>>
