Why do students listen to Dalai Lama?

I asked 89-year-old Dalai Lama for life advice and learned...
(Sprouht) March 2, 2025: I flew over 10,000 kilometers from Canada to Northern India and asked the 89-year-old 14th Dalai Lama for "life advice." He shared with me one of the most valuable pieces of advice I've ever heard. This was one of the most incredible journeys I've ever taken to date. Please enjoy one of the most incredible stories we've ever told.

China calls me Devil. Ha ha ha! So I do like this
(Tibetan doon boy) An American asks, "Is the Dolly Llama the Pope of Buddhism?" It comes as no surprise that there should be confusion. As Americans, we are bombarded with attention to a little-known sect of (Vajrayana) Buddhists on the Rooftop of the World. Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, was once the seat of a Himalayan empire that reached from Mongolia to Bangladesh, from Bangladesh to Kashmir. With the help of Hitler looking for the original Aryans and magical artifacts and the CIA fighting China and the expansion of communism, the West is bombarded with messages about how important this lama is or is supposed to be. China hates him. And due to the Dorje Shugden controversy, there's in-fighting among Tibetan Buddhists. Some New Kadampa Tradition practitioners hate him. But Americans, we are told we love him without understanding what his is or is supposed to be. The Simpsons jokes about it with Lenny, Carl, and Richard Gere. And the Jewish community loves and supports him. Last Week Tonight with John Oliver solved it with an exploratory episode, interviewing Americans then traveling to Tibet and meeting with "His Holiness" himself.

Signs of progress in meditation (Rinpoche)

How do I know if I'm becoming a better meditator? Signs of progress with Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche
(Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche) Premiered Aug. 20, 2024: Although meditation instructions are often simple and easy to understand, knowing whether we are practicing correctly can be difficult. [There's nothing easy about applying the easy instructions, nothing simple about actually doing the practice that sounded to terribly simple that there should have been nothing to it.] How do we know if it is being effective and helping us progress along the path of awakening (enlightenment)? In this monthly teaching, Mingyur Rinpoche gives helpful advice to assess how our "calm abiding practice" (samatha) or "insight meditation practice" (vipassana) is progressing.

(Inner) Peace Class weekly on Zoom

Friends, Peace Class meets every Wednesday night on Zoom and starts at 6:00 pm (Pacific Time). Join a Zoom meeting. Share link with friends. All are welcome at Peace Class. The most recent peace talk was delivered at last week's class:

Inner peace and World Peace
I was thinking, Where does peace begin?
Inner peace is World Peace that one person experiences first before the world feels it.

Inner peace is World Peace happening locally, radiating globally.

Inner peace is World Peace that one person has just grown in the garden of oneself.

Inner peace is World Peace. We call peace “World Peace” when enough people are experiencing individual peace and flowing it into the collective consciousness so that the peace experience becomes the common experience in society. But before profound peace is the most common experience, it's a notable if unusual individual experience. We call this “inner peace” because we are not yet in a world where profound peace permeates everyone's experience all the time. We can see the contrast between the inner peace we are feeling and the lack of peace that many others are feeling. For now, inner peace is still an unusual experience. It is not yet World Peace.

It is “still” this way because experienced peace will be the baseline experience for all beings eventually. But for those of us who were born in the Era of Belligerence, an experience of inner peace will most likely be something we must cultivate — something we move into and out of over the course of a day, week, or year.

When many (consider the 100th monkey theory) have brought forth their own peacefulness, collective peace will begin to manifest. First it will be experienced by small pockets of humanity. Then it will spread out into the surrounding areas.

Imagine being in a swimming pool and adding a drop of food coloring. The water will reflect that new color most strongly where the coloring was first placed, but eventually it will be incorporated more widely. It cannot help but spread. It will first make itself powerfully apparent locally.

Peace works this way.

One person in an experience of peace sends the flow of that peace into the collective consciousness, and it enters the collective at the precise point where that person is situated. One's peace begins a collective consciousness of peace, first locally then more widely. It can be felt most potently locally, where it is most concentrated.

World Peace begins as inner peace experienced by one person, two people interacting, or a group directly impacting one another. It eventually spreads into the collective, which is a term for all of their indirect contacts or all the people we impact without being aware of it.

World Peace is a result, not a cause; it comes last. Inner peace is a cause of World Peace and a result of it just as a stone cascading makes a sound that keeps reverberating every time it newly impacts a surface.

Eventually, experienced peace is the standard, the common experience. Then individuals are able to build on that standard, that foundation of peace. When there is standard peace, what will we see? Flowing creativity. Self-actualization. Self-exploration. New collaborations. New forms of art. New inventions — acts of genius. That's what's waiting for us when we arrive at World Peace.

We think of World Peace as the end of war. But in that state of generalized inner peace, war will not begin. Generalized peace will look like the absence of war to those who lived before during the Era of Belligerence. But for those who were born in the Age of Peace, it will look like flowing creativity, inventiveness, collaboration, artmaking, inspiration, and flowing ideas. It won't look like the end of war because war will sound so odd — such a strange thing for anyone to choose — that war will simply seem like a historical curiosity, the way we now think of outdated medical practices such as bloodletting. We look back at bloodletting and think, Why would one think becoming healthier is achieved by purposely losing blood? What a strange thing to do! What a strange way to treat one's body. Why would anyone ever do that? We look at bloodletting as a historical curiosity — as a marker of how things were at a peculiar moment in history, a time when humans were doing the best they could but were living in confusion that led to certain aberrations we now see clearly and would never choose today. That's how war will appear to us. We will look at it as a marker of a particularly strange time in human history.

From a peaceful mindset, we will not judge ourselves, or previous humans, for what they did not yet understand; we will have compassion for ourselves and for others. Knowing more, we will not again choose that which does not serve us.

War is a marker of a time in our development. It is an indicator of where we are in our evolution. The lower mind wants to know the answer to this question: Is war bad or good? The higher mind is so loving, so peaceful, that it does not judge. It simply says, War indicates that a society is very early in its development. We will know that we have evolved, we will know that we carry more peace, when we do not choose war — when we find that we, as individuals, simply would never choose to harm another person.

We will know that we have evolved when we look at the practice of harming another and find it puzzling. We will think, Why would anyone ever do that? It simply won't make sense. We will think, I'd never choose to hurt someone; I respect everyone here too much. I wouldn't chop down my own beloved house; I wouldn't throw away a cherished gift. And I wouldn't harm anyone, as everyone brings something valuable to the collective; everyone bears a gift, and therefore everyone is a gift.

We look at a loving world, a world where there are no skirmishes between individuals, a world where there is no violence, and we call what we see “World Peace” — and to us that means The End of All War. But it won't feel like the Age of No War, except to those who began their lives in the Era of Belligerence. It will feel like the Age of Inspiration, the Age of Creativity, the Age of Invention, the Age of Innovation. It will be the Age of Feeling Just Right, the Age of So Much to Get Out of Bed to Experience. It will be the Age of What Can I Build Next.

When we are in the Age of Peace, we will see it for what it is, not for what it isn't — not the contrast to what came before.

Only by living in peace will we truly understand its nature.

We do not call our time the Age of No Bloodletting. We don't notice what isn't there so much as we notice what is here. That's how we'll feel in the Age of Peace. We'll notice how good it feels to express ourselves, to be creative, to be full of innovative ideas. We'll notice how good our own kindness feels whether expressed towards ourselves or others. And the idea of not feeling these things will seem strange to us. We will think, What would possess anyone to treat another cruelly when expressing kindness feels so good and cruelty feels so terrible? Why would anyone choose to act in a way that feels terrible? What a strange way to live!

Those who feel called to build inner peace even as they are living in the Era of Belligerence are getting a preview of coming attractions. They're getting a taste of what will one day be the standard. But they're also seeding a world where one doesn't need to cultivate inner peace because it has become the standard. One only needs to choose what to focus into existence by way of one's already peaceful, already connected self. For that reason, the Age of Peace will also be the Age of Choice; all will have the freedom to concentrate on what they enjoy doing rather than spending their primary energy creating safety for themselves and making sure their basic needs are met.

Some of us in the Era of Belligerence already carry the perspective that will be common in the Age of Peace. Such people might look around at their society and think, How do I get out of here?

One “gets out of here” by building a future from where one is moving in the present.

One builds the Age of Peace by building inner peace. One builds peace for oneself in whatever increments one can and is grateful for whatever slivers of peace one can experience. One lingers in appreciation of peace whenever it arrives. One revels in the feeling of peace and thinks about what one loves about peace and speaks of the joys of peace and does what brings one more peace. That's how one builds the Age of Peace before it is here. This is how one gifts the Age of Peace to everyone.

If only Buddhism had anything to contribute to a discussion about peace
How can we cultivate inner peace?
Passaddhi
, in the Buddha's language, the ancient lingua franca of Pali, is a noun (Brahminical Sanskrit prasrabhi, Tibetan ΰ½€ིན་ཏུ་སྦྱང་ΰ½–་, Wylie shin tu sbyang ba) that has been translated as "calmness," "tranquility," "repose," and "serenity" [1]. It is inner peace.

The associated verb is passambhati (to calm down, to quieten) [2]. In Buddhism, passaddhi refers to tranquility of body, speech, and mind (thoughts, consciousness on the path to enlightenment).

As part of the cultivatable mental factors, passaddhi is preceded by "rapture" or "joy" or "bliss" (pīti) and precedes profound stillness (samādhi).

Passaddhi is identified as a wholesome factor in the following canonical contexts:
Pali canon references
In various Buddhist canonical schema, the calming of the body, speech, and various mental factors is associated with gladness (pāmojja, pāmujja), rapture (pΔ«ti), and pleasure or happiness (sukhaαΉƒ) and leads to the stillness (and effortless concentration) needed for release from pain and suffering (dukkha). How to fully live now (Alan Watts)

How to be fully alive now - Alan Watts
(After Skool) Jan. 7, 2025: In this animation, Alan Watts explains how most of us are failing to experience the reality of life for what it really is. We get so caught up in language, ego, time, money, "problems," and distractions that we miss the beauty of the present moment -- the eternal Now. It's an inspirational and profound speech on the real and tangible here and now. What were we previously thinking, carrying on and going about on autopilot?

WARNING: This is NOT a test run. This is your real life. Live.

Neighbors laughed at the innovative building of our small house, but then they were amazed

(CREATIVE COUPLE) This is a short version of the complete construction of a simple affordable home.
We built this small house for elderly parents. By design the house is simple and consists of light blocks called autoclaved aerated concrete. The total area of the house is 640 square feet, and the exterior dimensions are 18 by 22 feet.

We built it without loans on a small budget of $17,000. This price included the purchase of the land for $2,000. The total budget did not include the cost of labor because we did all the work ourselves.

ABOUT: We are a happy couple, Hena and Vita. We like to create with our own hands, which is how we find ourselves. We love making videos and try to make them useful. This is how we develop ourselves and continue to build the channel. We have many more DIY projects that we will definitely surprise viewers. If you support family values and love to create with your own hands, welcome to our family "CREATIVE COUPLE."

A sutra for householders: "Dangers"
Ven. Sujato (trans.), "Dangers" (AN 10.92) or (Numbered Discourses 10.92) 10. "With Upāli"), suttacentral.org; edited, expanded, and explained by Dhr. Seven, Wisdom Quarterly
.
Then the householder Anāthapiṇḍika [Sudatta, the generous multimillionaire donor to the needy who was already a stream enterer] went to the Buddha, bowed, and sat respectfully to one side. The Buddha said:

“Householder, when a noble [Arya = enlightened] disciple has quelled five dangers and threats, has the four factors of stream entry, and has clearly seen and comprehended the noble system with wisdom, that person may, if one wishes, declare of oneself: ‘I’ve made an end of rebirth in hells, the animal realm, and the ghost realm.

“‘I’ve made an end of [all rebirth in] places of loss, unfortunate destinations, subhuman worlds. I am a stream-enterer! I’m no longer liable to be reborn in the downfall and am bound for full awakening.’

The dangers
“What are the five dangers and threats such a person has quelled?
One can live at home practicing the Path.
  1. Anyone who kills living creatures creates dangers and threats both in this present life and in lives to come and experiences mental pain and sadness. Anyone who refrains from killing living creatures creates no dangers and threats either in the present life or in lives to come and doesn’t experience mental pain and sadness. So that danger and threat is quelled for anyone who refrains from killing living creatures.
  2. Anyone who steals…
  3. Anyone who engages in sexual misconduct…
  4. Anyone who lies [engages in wrong speech, which is more than lying]…
  5. Anyone who consumes beer, wine, liquor, and intoxicants [that occasion heedlessness] creates dangers and threats both in the present life and in lives to come and experiences mental pain and sadness. Anyone who refrains from consuming beer, wine, liquor, and intoxicants creates no dangers and threats either in the present life or in lives to come and avoids experiencing mental pain and sadness. So that danger and threat is quelled for anyone who refrains from consuming beer, wine, liquor, and intoxicants.
“These are the five dangers and threats one has quelled.

The Four Factors of Stream-Entry.
Why leave household life to practice? No distractions.
“What are the Four Factors of Stream-Entry that one has?

“A noble disciple has experiential confidence [proven conviction, confirmed faith] in the Teacher (the Buddha): ‘This Blessed One is indeed perfected, a supremely enlightened teacher, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, full of integrity, a knower of worlds, a supreme guide for those wishing to train, a teacher of devas and human beings, awakened, blessed.’

“One has experiential confidence in the Teaching (Dharma): ‘The teaching is well explained by the Buddha — apparent here and now in the present life, immediately effective, inviting investigation, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.’

“One has experiential confidence in the Taught (the Noble SaαΉ…gha, the successfully taught): ‘The SaαΉ…gha of the Buddha’s disciples [the spiritual community of accomplished practitioners, people at the first level of awakening called stream-entry up to full enlightenment or arhatship, which is a category of beings in no way limited to ordained monastics] is practicing the way that is skillful, direct, systematic, and beneficial.

“This community consists of the four pairs, the eight individuals. This is the SaαΉ…gha of the Buddha’s disciples that is worthy of offerings (gifts) dedicated to the devas, worthy of hospitality, worthy of religious donations, worthy of greetings with joined palms (anjali mudra), and serves as the supreme field of merit for the world.’

“And a noble disciple’s virtue and ethical conduct is loved by the noble ones, unbroken, impeccable, spotless, and unmarred, liberating, praised by the wise (sensible people), unmistaken, and leading to absorption (meditative immersion).

“These are the Four Factors of Stream-Entry that one has.

The Enlightening System
"There's a systematic way to let go and be free," asked Imogen. The Buddha is full of surprises.
.
“And what is the noble [enlightening] system that one has clearly seen and comprehended with wisdom? A noble disciple reflects:

“‘When this exists, that is; due to the arising of this, that arises. When this does not exist, that is not; due to the cessation of this, that ceases. [This is called knowledge of how all things arise: they are "dependently originated," and here is an explanation of how suffering (dukkha, disappointment, ill, woe) comes to be and how to end it completely.] That is:
  1. Ignorance is a condition for karmas.
  2. Karmas (actions) are a condition for consciousness.
  3. Consciousness is a condition for name and form.
  4. Name and form are conditions for the six sense fields.
  5. The six sense fields are conditions for contact.
  6. Contact is a condition for feeling [sensation].
  7. Feeling is a condition for craving [lust, thirst, craving].
  8. Craving is a condition for grasping.
  9. Grasping is a condition for continued becoming.
  10. Continued becoming is a condition for rebirth.
  11. Rebirth is a condition for old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress to come into being.
  12. That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.
  1. “When ignorance fades away and ceases without remainder, karmas cease.
  2. When karmas cease, [the impersonal process of] consciousness ceases.
  3. When consciousness ceases, name and form cease.
  4. When name and form cease, the six sense fields cease.
  5. When the six sense fields cease, contact ceases.
  6. When contact ceases, feeling ceases.
  7. When feeling ceases, craving ceases.
  8. When craving ceases, grasping ceases.
  9. When grasping ceases, continued rebirth ceases.
  10. When continued becoming ceases, rebirth ceases.
  11. When rebirth ceases, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress cease.
  12. That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.’
I can go home and know-and-see this DIY? - Not DIY
“This is the noble system that one has clearly seen and comprehended with wisdom.

“When a noble disciple has quelled five dangers and threats, has the Four Factors of Stream-Entry, and has clearly seen and comprehended the noble cycle with wisdom [Dependent Origination], one may, if one wishes, declare of oneself:

“‘I’ve made an end of [any possibility of] rebirth in hells, the animal realm, and the ghost realm. I’ve made an end of rebirth in all places of loss, unfortunate destinations, subhuman worlds. I am a stream-enterer. I’m no longer liable to be reborn in the downfall and am bound for full awakening.’” Source: suttacentral.net

Fix a dysregulated nervous system ASAP

What it FEELS like when our nervous system is dysregulated
(Crappy Childhood Fairy) Dec. 26, 2022. "Dysregulation" is a core symptom of Complex-PTSD, which usually occurs due to childhood traumas. If we had a rough childhood, we may have thought these symptoms were our fault -- personal failings that we're ashamed we haven't changed yet. Once we know the normal signs that childhood trauma has impacted us, we can drop the guilt and learn to adopt workarounds that help us re-regulate and resolve life's problems.

How to reset a dysregulated nervous system (in under 60 seconds)

(Brain retraining program | re-origin®) Jan. 31, 2023. Stressful events from the past can have a lasting impact on the state of our nervous system in the present and even determine our reactions in the future.

Intense emotions, fearful thoughts, negative emotions, old (dysfunctional) behaviors, and past traumatic events can all build and contribute to a totally overwhelming stress load that can cause our nervous system to become "dysregulated" (out of control), causing us to feel constantly uneasy and on edge.

Beauty without surgery: Mew Method

What I've Learned, 2/6/19; Amber Larson, Crystal Q., CC Liu (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Attractive face or not? It depends on TONGUE posture
(What I've Learned) One thing missing from any discussion of beauty is the health impact of good oral posture.

I used to be so beautiful
Considering that it is at the back of the face, having a receded chin or maxilla could hinder the airway, with big implications for sleep apnea.

Clarification on the title: Of course, no one means to suggest that attractiveness depends only on tongue posture. Nutrition in utero (during the mother's pregnancy), postpartum nutrition, and health through the formative years surely play very big roles in how the face develops.

In fact, Weston Price's book
I'm hot. There's nothing wrong with my face.
Nutrition and Physical Degeneration
suggests that fat soluble vitamins are very important for fertility and the proper development of the young; grains and sugar ("modern foods") are very detrimental to their development, particularly their oral health.

Oral posture is simply another piece of the puzzle.

SUTURE FUSION: The phrases "These sutures are not completely fused together" and "Sutures are not completely closed" would have been better. It is understood that after birth, the sutures of the skull "fuse" together by age 2 or so. One study found that complete closure of certain sutures does not occur until as late as 70-years-old. Another found that “The human frontozygomatic suture undergoes synostosis during the eighth decade of life but does not completely fuse by the age of 95 years" based on 61 human cadavers aged 20 to 95.

This topic with a focus on facial development's affect on respiration and sleep apnea is discussed in Dr. Felix Liao's Six Foot Tiger, Three Foot Cage.

Another great book not mentioned in the video is Jaws: The Story of a Hidden Epidemic.

How to survive anywhere: learn FIRE (2/18)

Chris Nyerges (Meetup), School of Self-Reliance; Xochitl, Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Learn how to make fire by several primitive methods. Learn the four principles by which fire is generated:
  1. mechanical (friction)
  2. solar
  3. chemical
  4. electrical.
Practice several of these, and learn the best techniques for mastery. Use solar reflectors and magnifying glasses, common batteries, flint stone and steel, the bow, the hand drill, the piston, flammable magnesium, and others.

Learn by doing. The goal is to create a hot ember and “nurture” it into a flame. Learn which woods are best for burning and cooking and how to process woods. A short nature walk will be included to see which plants are best for fire-making kits.

This class applies to the School of Self-Reliance's Bushcraft Certificate.
