Neighbors laughed at the innovative building of our small house, but then they were amazed
(CREATIVE COUPLE) This is a short version of the complete construction of a simple affordable home.
We built this small house for elderly parents. By design the house is simple and consists of light blocks called autoclaved aerated concrete. The total area of the house is 640 square feet, and the exterior dimensions are 18 by 22 feet.
We built it without loans on a small budget of $17,000. This price included the purchase of the land for $2,000. The total budget did not include the cost of labor because we did all the work ourselves.
ABOUT: We are a happy couple, Hena and Vita. We like to create with our own hands, which is how we find ourselves. We love making videos and try to make them useful. This is how we develop ourselves and continue to build the channel. We have many more DIY projects that we will definitely surprise viewers. If you support family values and love to create with your own hands, welcome to our family "CREATIVE COUPLE."
A sutra for householders: "Dangers"
Ven. Sujato (trans.), "Dangers" (AN 10.92) or (Numbered Discourses 10.92) 10. "With Upāli"), suttacentral.org; edited, expanded, and explained by Dhr. Seven, Wisdom Quarterly
.
Then the householder Anāthapiṇḍika [Sudatta, the generous multimillionaire donor to the needy who was already a stream enterer] went to the Buddha, bowed, and sat respectfully to one side. The Buddha said:
“Householder, when a noble [Arya = enlightened] disciple has quelled five dangers and threats, has the four factors of stream entry, and has clearly seen and comprehended the noble system with wisdom, that person may, if one wishes, declare of oneself: ‘I’ve made an end of rebirth in hells, the animal realm, and the ghost realm.
“‘I’ve made an end of [all rebirth in] places of loss, unfortunate destinations, subhuman worlds. I am a stream-enterer! I’m no longer liable to be reborn in the downfall and am bound for full awakening.’
The dangers
“What are the five dangers and threats such a person has quelled?
One can live at home practicing the Path.
Anyone who kills living creatures creates dangers and threats both in this present life and in lives to come and experiences mental pain and sadness. Anyone who refrains from killing living creatures creates no dangers and threats either in the present life or in lives to come and doesn’t experience mental pain and sadness. So that danger and threat is quelled for anyone who refrains from killing living creatures.
Anyone who steals…
Anyone who engages in sexual misconduct…
Anyone who lies [engages in wrong speech, which is more than lying]…
Anyone who consumes beer, wine, liquor, and intoxicants [that occasion heedlessness] creates dangers and threats both in the present life and in lives to come and experiences mental pain and sadness. Anyone who refrains from consuming beer, wine, liquor, and intoxicants creates no dangers and threats either in the present life or in lives to come and avoids experiencing mental pain and sadness. So that danger and threat is quelled for anyone who refrains from consuming beer, wine, liquor, and intoxicants.
“These are the five dangers and threats one has quelled.
The Four Factors of Stream-Entry.
Why leave household life to practice? No distractions.
“What are the Four Factors of Stream-Entry that one has?
“A noble disciple has experiential confidence [proven conviction, confirmed faith] in the Teacher (the Buddha): ‘This Blessed One is indeed perfected, a supremely enlightened teacher, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, full of integrity, a knower of worlds, a supreme guide for those wishing to train, a teacher of devas and human beings, awakened, blessed.’
“One has experiential confidence in the Teaching (Dharma): ‘The teaching is well explained by the Buddha — apparent here and now in the present life, immediately effective, inviting investigation, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.’
“One has experiential confidence in the Taught (the Noble Saṅgha, the successfully taught): ‘The Saṅgha of the Buddha’s disciples [the spiritual community of accomplished practitioners, people at the first level of awakening called stream-entry up to full enlightenment or arhatship, which is a category of beings in no way limited to ordained monastics] is practicing the way that is skillful, direct, systematic, and beneficial.
“This community consists of the four pairs, the eight individuals. This is the Saṅgha of the Buddha’s disciples that is worthy of offerings (gifts) dedicated to the devas, worthy of hospitality, worthy of religious donations, worthy of greetings with joined palms (anjali mudra), and serves as the supreme field of merit for the world.’
“And a noble disciple’s virtue and ethical conduct is loved by the noble ones, unbroken, impeccable, spotless, and unmarred, liberating, praised by the wise (sensible people), unmistaken, and leading to absorption (meditative immersion).
“These are the Four Factors of Stream-Entry that one has.
The Enlightening System
"There's a systematic way to let go and be free," asked Imogen. The Buddha is full of surprises.
.
“And what is the noble [enlightening] system that one has clearly seen and comprehended with wisdom? A noble disciple reflects:
“‘When this exists, that is; due to the arising of this, that arises. When this does not exist, that is not; due to the cessation of this, that ceases. [This is called knowledge of how all things arise: they are "dependently originated," and here is an explanation of how suffering (dukkha, disappointment, ill, woe) comes to be and how to end it completely.] That is:
Ignorance is a condition for karmas.
Karmas (actions) are a condition for consciousness.
Consciousness is a condition for name and form.
Name and form are conditions for the six sense fields.
“When ignorance fades away and ceases without remainder, karmas cease.
When karmas cease, [the impersonal process of] consciousness ceases.
When consciousness ceases, name and form cease.
When name and form cease, the six sense fields cease.
When the six sense fields cease, contact ceases.
When contact ceases, feeling ceases.
When feeling ceases, craving ceases.
When craving ceases, grasping ceases.
When grasping ceases, continued rebirth ceases.
When continued becoming ceases, rebirth ceases.
When rebirth ceases, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress cease.
That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.’
I can go home and know-and-see this DIY? - Not DIY
“This is the noble system that one has clearly seen and comprehended with wisdom.
“When a noble disciple has quelled five dangers and threats, has the Four Factors of Stream-Entry, and has clearly seen and comprehended the noble cycle with wisdom [Dependent Origination], one may, if one wishes, declare of oneself:
“‘I’ve made an end of [any possibility of] rebirth in hells, the animal realm, and the ghost realm. I’ve made an end of rebirth in all places of loss, unfortunate destinations, subhuman worlds. I am a stream-enterer. I’m no longer liable to be reborn in the downfall and am bound for full awakening.’” Source: suttacentral.net

What is the ideal place to meditate? The Buddha frequently repeats some of his suggestions. Would it be a thatched hut in the jungle, a tent of robes in the desert, a mound of kusa grass next to a river?

The Seclusion Sutra
Viveka Sutta, (SN 9.1) translated by Dhr. Seven, Wisdom Quarterly
"Oh, foolish mortals! ever blind to fate; too soon dejected, too soon elate" (Alexander Pope).
At that time, having gone to spend the day in seclusion, he was beset by unskillful thoughts, clinging to reminisces about the life of a layperson.
Then the woodland fairy (devata) inhabiting that forest, out of sympathy for the meditator, wishing him success, wishing to return him to his senses, approached and addressed him in verse:
Indeed, that meditator, chastened by the glowing spirit, came to his senses with a sense of urgency for the goal.
*Abyss: not literal (as in Avicior the Downfall of Niraya in general) but figurative in the sense that sensual craving can never be appeased by feeding it, as it is an endless consumer of more and more pleasures, stimuli, and novelty.
In West Virginia we visited Bhante G's Bhavana Society(bhavanasociety.org), a Sri Lankan Theravada Buddhist meditation center in the woods. I was assigned a cozy cabin with a funny stove. It was the warm season, so I could hardly imagine how cold it gets part of the year, snowed in, surviving by chopping wood to feed the hearth. Outside, mushrooms sprouted on the damp ground, and all around were trees and plants and a creek farther down by the old country road. This would do for meditation, but there were still many social distractions. One could hardly be silent as people were in the habit of small talk or getting to know one another. External silence is a great support for internal silence, where it really counts if one wishes to absorb into one's meditation object. The visiting nun leading us, as the abbot was no longer himself post-stroke, gave us instruction capable of producing absorption (jhana). One retreatant constantly slipped into piti and swirled his body on his cushion, blissed out. I would look at him, and rather than let myself become annoyed, I would follow suit. I swirled. And piti arose like magic, just a little, enough to know he was onto something. The woodland glen the center is on seemed ideal for fairy spirits of some description, as in "The Rape of the Lock." But I didn't see them. I couldn't feel them; I wasn't still enough. Females, being more sensitive and attuned to nature, claimed they could.

American Buddhist Monk Ven. Subhuti
A kuṭi (/coo-tee/) is a small hut or lodging that meditators and monastics live in. It is one of the basic Four Requisites: robes, food, lodging, and medicine. Such lodgings come in various sizes and quality levels. Here I have prepared a small photo showcase to do what words cannot. Nuns and monks reflect on the utilitarian purpose of one's lodging (senāsana). This is a small sample of the daily morning monastic chant:
Paṭisaṅkhā yoniso senāsanaṁ paṭisevāmi,With wise reflection I make use of a dwelling,
yāvad-eva sītassa paṭighātāya, uṇhassa paṭighātāya,but only to ward off cold, to ward off heat,
ḍaṁsamakasavātātapasarīṁsapasamphassānaṁ paṭighātāya,to ward off contact with gadflies, mosquitoes, wind, sun, and serpents,
yāvad-eva utuparissayavinodanapaṭisallānārāmatthaṁ.only to dispel the trouble of the (varying) seasons, so as to delight in meditative seclusion.
This daily reflection should make it not matter where we stay or the quality of the dwelling. However, some of us get spoiled sometimes. Wherever we stay, we should be happy. I've stayed at many of the places shown here. Kuti #123 in Pa Auk Forest Monastery in Burma is where I lived from 2001-2005.
This photo was taken much later by the person living there now. It is one of the original huts in the monastic compound, which has grown quite a bit into the surrounding forest. They call them black kutis because they are blackwashed with old engine oil to keep the bugs away.
Does it work? To some extent, but they smell like a car repair shop for a few days every time they are treated. And when the smell goes away, the bugs return. The newer huts have oil moats around the supporting pillars.
This is Kuti#123, a black meditation hut blackwashed with used motor oil.
This is another kuti at Pa-Auk. Note the stilts for the rainy season flooding.
Here are a few others from Pa Auk Forest Monastery.
Rain is a problem in the jungle. Mosquitoes may be worse. Screens are Western luxury.
Inside view, low bed, bucket shower, life-saving electric fan, and Coca Cola soda?
Here is the inside view. As I was looking through many pictures, I saw a few of my old residences from 2014-2015. This is in the “Beverly Hills Section,” where many senior monks reside. They have teak wood flooring.
A beautiful balcony and banister, a hot tin roof, shutters for the rain and wind.
Here is my kuti from 2014 to 2015. I have also included some of the kutis in Nauyana, where I lived from 2007-2012. The cement box was where I lived. I only spent one night in a kuti that looks this austere.
Stone is stronger than wood, so cover it in concrete until there's an earthquake.
A glorious cave kuti, apartment built into the overhang of a solid rock, Nauhana.
Wattle and daub is the British way of saying mud clay, grass, twigs, and branches.
With a Sri Lankan monk on the dirt floor, where creepy crawlies walk right in.
This wattle and daub does not have a thatched roof, but rusting tin for the rain.
Nauyana kutis are wattle and daub "mud huts," which makes them very cool and natural, easy to fix and feel like an ancient monastic. This is likely the way they were built in the early days of the Buddha.
Here is a kuti I stayed in for about three months in Mudon, which ranks high on my list of places to stay. It was brand new in 2015, modestly sized, but very, very nice.
Modern roofing, stilts, sliding windows, shutters
This is my current kuti. I really want to change kutis, and as such I have tried a few others. But they just don’t feel "right." So I stay on in the kuti I was given last November, 2019. It is quite nice. All the kutis are pretty much the same except for the teachers’ huts. One can guess which ones those are. Here's my kuti outside and inside. The wide angle lens makes it look much larger than it is.
Paved driveway -- a footpath for walking meditation over the jungle terrain.
On the inside, with lots of monastic colors. Burma prefers burgundy, carpet, screening, mat.
Aerial view of the expanding Pa-Auk Forest Meditation, Monastery, Mawlamyine.
A street light springs up on the "streets" of the forest hermitage, suburban sprawl.
The teal roofing of kutis stand out in the green jungle canopy.
Here are some different kutis in Pa-Auk Pyin Oo Lwin.
Conditioned air in the meditation hall? That would be salvation, relief, and unlikely.
The roof takes on an Indonesian appearance, a big indigenous house style.
Dirt stairs carved right into the ground, which works until it rains.
This is a teacher’s kuti. While they look quite nice, they are not actually luxurious. A hut can be austere. I have stayed in many different places. For example, when I was in Kauai, Hawaii, I lived in a tent for a year.
A tent can be a monastic residence. In the Buddha's time, they were made of robes.
It was all-focus and meditation. A tiny living space concentrates the mind or, in any case, can help one remove distractions.
This modern "robe tent" is the right color for a monk outdoors.
Living Big In A Tiny House, 9/19; CC Liu, Seth Auberon, Pfc. Sandoval (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Relaxing at the cabin with Cali, my golden retrieve, the weather was incredible, warm and sunny, one day with deer coming out to dine on the acorns exposed under the melting snow.
But the next day, raining ice pellets fell all night long before changing to snow. It was not the worst ice storm I've witnessed, not like the ice storm of several years ago that shut the Northeast down for a few days, but it did some damage.
With our drone, my wife got some incredible aerial footage and photographs of raging rivers, pristine Canadian wilderness in the snow, and the log cabin.
The rustic tiny house is extremely cozy right now, especially when my wife and dog are here and the fire in the woodstove is burning, the candles and lanterns lit, and furs piled high on the bed. It's extremely cozy now that the floor is insulated and the spaces between the logs have been filled in. Woodworking and bushcrafting the structure was very rewarding, but the interior finishes are the icing on the cake.
Whenever I'm inside with the fire burning and I look out through the windows at the winter storms raging, I'm inspired to finish this tiny log house as soon as possible so that I can get working on the front porch, the outdoor kitchen, the cellar, workshop, maple syrup shack, and more.
I'm particularly excited to live off the land, foraging for wild plants and edibles, growing my own vegetables, and becoming self-reliant. I can use this off-grid-cabin as a shelter and base where I can practice living off the land and use primitive technology, honing bushcraft skills, improving my survival skills and my self-reliance.
Of course, no video would be complete without the meals I prepare on the woodstove over the fire with cast iron cookware. In this episode, I make slaughtered animal spiced with garam masala, leeks, onions, and broccoli. For breakfast, I have fresh poultry fetuses from the nearby rural homestead where they raise birds for slaughter. I'll be showing how I put the fetuses in long-term storage, preserving the food for the future.
My dog and I fall asleep to the hooting of barred owls. The wind through the trees and the falling rain were big ASMR triggers for me. It's deep winter outside, but in the cabin it's cozy and warm. Sometimes I think living off grid in a tiny house seems much easier than the suburbs away from the daily stress of life.
In fact, dealing with my high blood pressure and becoming much healthier by eating more vegetables is my motivation for building this cabin and living the simple life out in nature. Not my only motivation, of course, I'm also inspired by my wife and my parents, who are living long and happy lives cutting out meat.
Inspiration is important in this crazy world, and of course I'm not the only one who wants to escape from society and retreat to a cabin in the woods.
To accomplish my goal of living off grid with as little money as possible, living cheaply and saving money wherever possible, I need to continue to improve my woodworking and bushcraft skills, along with tree identification, foraging, making maple syrup, harvesting chaga mushrooms, catching water, preserving beans for long-term storage (dehydrating, salting, curing, smoking, freezing, drying).
