(Nature) A deposit of high-quality gold ore containing around 1,000 metric tons (1,100 US tons) of the precious metal has been discovered in central China, according to Chinese state media.

Valued at approximately 600 billion yuan or U.S. 83 billion dollars, the discovery could be considered the largest and most lucrative reservoir of gold ever uncovered, surpassing the 900 metric tons estimated to lie within the mother of all gold reserves, South Deep mine in South Africa.

The Geological Bureau of Hunan Province announced the detection of 40 gold veins within a depth of 1.2 miles (2 kms) in the northeast Hunan county of Pingjiang.

These alone were thought to contain 300 metric tons of gold, with 3D modeling suggesting additional reserves may be found to a depth of 3 kms.

The massive find was made in Pingjiang County, well within undisputed Chinese territory. "Many drilled rock cores showed visible gold," says bureau prospector Chen Rulin.

Core samples suggest every metric ton of ore could contain as much as 138 grams (nearly 5 ounces) of gold – an extraordinary level of quality considering ore excavated from underground mines is considered high grade if it contains more than 8 grams.

China already dominates the world's gold market with reserves considered to be in excess of 2,000 tons earlier in 2024, its mining industry contributing around 10 percent of the global output.

Wadi Faynan 16 — a 12,000-year-old ancient site you probably never heard of

Excavations of the site revealed, to the surprise of archaeologists, a dense cluster of half-buried oval structures that have been dated back to between 12,000 and 10,000 years ago.

Of all the truly ancient sites on Earth, most are familiar with Göbekli Tepe, an ancient site believed to date back about 12,000 years, located in present-day Anatolia (Turkey, the Fertile Crescent).

The 12,000-year-old ancient site you probably never heard about

In 1996, archeologists stumbled across the site when they identified flint tools and large stone mortars on the surface of a knoll.

The site is located in present-day Jordan, not far from a steep climb to the Jordanian Plateau. Its importance resides in the fact that it is home to some of the most ancient development of the Neolithic, featuring a clear separation from hunting and gathering food to the production of food [farming], a sedentary lifestyle, and a community.

Excavations eventually revealed numerous workshops, houses, and public spaces for communal activities such as religious or ceremonial rites.

Dense cluster of semi-subterranean structures

Excavations of the site revealed, to the surprise of archaeologists, a dense cluster of half-buried oval structures which have been dated back to between 12,000 and 10,000 years ago. The site is believed to have reached its peak around 11,200 years ago.

The structures were intricately covered with a mud and plant mixture, which helped keep the structures firmly in place. This material was used for the walls that supported flat wooden roofs and other buildings at the site.

The structures at WF16 vary in size, suggesting specific uses for each building. Some were used for domestic activities and others for storage and workshops. But one structure stands out. It is perhaps one of the first amphitheater-like structures ever found. More: Wadi Faynan 16

Researchers stated in a press release that the uncovered temple “shows the continuities between the classical pagan world and early Christian Roman world that often get blurred out or written out of the sweeping historical narratives.”

The decision to begin an excavation at the site in Spello was sparked by an ancient inscription that hangs in the town hall.

The inscription was originally recovered in the 1700s. It states, in language directed to the townspeople of its time, that the creation of the temple constituted a massive undertaking.

What intrigued researchers was that it also grants the town inhabitants the ability to celebrate a religious festival in Spello instead of making a long journey elsewhere.
