Sumerian: historic Anunnaki civilization

  • Mysterious Old World: Sumerians, did they invent everything? They claim to have invented nothing. It was all given to them by the Anunnaki, those who came from the sky. Ask Zecharia Sitchin. But 6,000 years ago and longer, in a place called Sumer (reminiscent of Mt. Sumeru in Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain cosmology), there lived a people in Mesopotamia doing miraculous things they should not have been able to do.

Before Genesis (Bible story origins)

MythVision Podcast, 7/15/23; Sheldon S., Seth Auberon (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Shocking secret origins of Genesis
(MythVision Podcast) Let's explore the fascinating connections between the creation myth in the Hebrew Bible (Genesis 1) and the Sumerian Enuma Elish, an ancient Babylonian epic that predates the Bible.

We took our Jewish stories from the Sumerians?
Discover how Marduk's triumph over Tiamat and the subsequent creation of the cosmos resonate in the biblical narrative. But that's not all. Delve into the intriguing contrasts between Genesis 1 and Genesis 2, focusing on the different orders of creation.

This discrepancy has led scholars to propose multiple authors, with Genesis 2 potentially predating Genesis 1.

Let's look at the Akkadian cognates in Genesis, revealing possible literary dependence and shedding light on the fascinating interplay of ancient texts.

The mythical Garden of Eden in Genesis holds a special place in the discussion. Join to explore its origins in ancient Mesopotamia (Iraq) and uncover the potential sources that influenced the biblical scribes.

Unravel the connections between the creation of humankind in Genesis and older Mesopotamian counterparts, shedding light on the mythical figure of Adam, the first human (or Adama, group of humans).

Of course, the intriguing tale of Eve's creation from Adam's side, half, or rib is covered. If we trace this motif back to the older Sumerian myths, we discover echoes that resonate between these ancient narratives.

To wrap up this exploration, let's tackle the theme of our lost human immortality. Drawing from the renowned Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh and the myth of Adappa and the South Wind, unveil the significant role these myths play in biblical creation stories.

This journey through ancient myths and their influence on the Bible is captivating. Together, we ponder the implications of the biblical scribes drawing inspiration from much older polytheistic mythology.

Sumerian roots of the Bible (video)

Neal Sendlak (Gnostic Informant, 6/17/23); Sheldon S., CC Liu (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Shocking Sumerian roots of the Bible | (documentary)
(Gnostic Informant) Most historians have suggested that Sumer (home of the Sumerians and possibly the location of the Vedas' and Buddhism's Mt. Sumeru) was first permanently settled between circa 5500–3300 BCE by a West Asian people who spoke the Sumerian language.

Billy explains Sumerian history, clearer than Bible

Don't say "God is all in our head." Gods exist.
(Scholars can point to the names of cities, rivers, basic occupations, and so on as evidence). Sumerian is a non-Semitic and non-Indo-European agglutinative language isolate.

The Blau Monuments combine proto-cuneiform characters and illustrations of early Sumerians, Jemdet Nasr period, 3100–2700 BCE (British Museum).

Others have suggested that the Sumerians were a North African people who migrated from the once Green Sahara into the Middle East and were responsible for the spread of farming in the Middle East.

However, with evidence strongly suggesting the first farmers originated in the Fertile Crescent, this suggestion is often discarded.

Although not specifically discussing Sumerians, Lazaridis et al. 2016 have suggested a partial North African origin for some pre-Semitic cultures of the Middle East, particularly Natufians, after testing the genomes of Natufian and Pre-Pottery Neolithic culture-bearers.

Alternatively, a 2013 genetic analysis of four ancient Mesopotamian skeletal DNA samples suggests an association of the Sumerians with Indus Valley Civilization, possibly as a result of ancient Indus–Mesopotamia relations.

According to some data, the Sumerians are associated with the Hurrians and Urartians, and the area of the Caucasus Mountains is considered their homeland.

A prehistoric people who lived in the region before the Sumerians have been termed the "Proto-Euphrateans" or "Ubaidians" and are theorized to have evolved from the Samarra culture of northern Mesopotamia.

The Ubaidians, though never mentioned by the Sumerians themselves, are assumed by modern-day scholars to have been the first civilizing force in Sumer.

They drained the marshes to make way for agriculture, developed trade, and established industries, including weaving, leatherwork, metalwork, masonry, and pottery.

Enthroned Sumerian king of Ur, possibly Ur-Pabilsag, with attendants. Standard of Ur, c. 2600 BC.

Some scholars contest the idea of a Proto-Euphratean language or one substrate language; they think the Sumerian language may originally have been that of the hunting and fishing peoples who lived in the marshland and the Eastern Arabia littoral region and were part of the Arabian bifacial culture.

Reliable historical records begin much later; there are none in Sumer of any kind that have been dated before Enmebaragesi (Early Dynastic I).

Juris Zarins believes the Sumerians lived along the coast of Eastern Arabia, today's Persian Gulf region, before it was flooded at the end of the Ice Age.

Sumerian civilization took form in the Uruk period (4th millennium BCE), continuing into the Jemdet Nasr and Early Dynastic periods.

The Sumerians progressively lost control to Semitic states from the northwest. Sumer was conquered by the Semitic-speaking kings of the Akkadian Empire around 2270 BCE (short chronology), but Sumerian continued as a sacred language (like liturgical Sanskrit or Latin).

Native Sumerian rule re-emerged for about a century in the Third Dynasty of Ur at approximately 2100–2000 BCE, but the Akkadian language also remained in use for some time.

The Sumerian city of Eridu, on the coast of the Persian Gulf, is considered to have been one of the oldest cities, where three separate cultures may have fused: that of peasant Ubaidian farmers, living in mud-brick huts and practicing irrigation, that of mobile nomadic Semitic pastoralists living in black tents and following herds of sheep and goats, and that of fisher folk, living in reed huts in the marshlands, who may have been the ancestors of the Sumerians.

Epic of Gilgamesh, ancient Mesopotamian odyssey recorded in the Akkadian language about Gilgamesh, the king of the Mesopotamian city-state Uruk (Erech).

The fullest extant text of the Gilgamesh epic is on 12 incomplete Akkadian-language tablets found in the mid-19th century by the Turkish Assyriologist Hormuzd Rassam at Nineveh in the library of the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal (reigned 668–627 BCE).

The gaps that occur in the tablets have been partly filled by various fragments found elsewhere in Mesopotamia and Anatolia [home of Gobekli Tepe and even older temple ruins recently uncovered in the same area].

In addition, five short poems in the Sumerian language are known from tablets that were written during the first half of the 2nd millennium BCE; the poems have been entitled
  1. “Gilgamesh and Huwawa,”
  2. “Gilgamesh and the Bull of Heaven,”
  3. “Gilgamesh and Agga of Kish,”
  4. “Gilgamesh, Enkidu, and the Netherworld,” and
  5. “The Death of Gilgamesh.”

The mind-blowing origins of Adam and Eve

MythVision Podcast, 6/17/23 (mythvisionclips); Sheldon S., Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

The origin of Adam and Eve is mind blowing!
(MythVision Podcast) The tale of Adam and Eve is a story deeply ingrained in various religious traditions and beliefs.
  • "Eve" was a devi in Buddhism
[In Buddhism, there is the Agganna Sutra to explain the origins of humanoid life on earth, on this bhumi or level plane, which is a product of devolution not evolution, but evolution comes back in the long course of a repeating/cyclical process. We are descended from devas who alighted on earth and liked the carnal, became attached, and lost their angelic light bodies, as they became coarser and coarser through the ages or over a long period of time. We still have deva potential, so we are much more than mere animals, though animals are certainly living beings worthy of care caught in the same cyclical process.]
The Rebuke of Adam and Eve (Natoire, 1740)
However, beneath the layers of faith and devotion lie an intriguing connection to earlier mythologies of Mesopotamia (modern Iraq), one of the cradles of civilization.

It appears that the Jewish-Christian biblical account of Adam and Eve draws heavily from these ancient tales, suggesting that it is a reimagining rather than a historical reality.

In Mesopotamian mythology, we encounter the Epic of Gilgamesh, a legendary hero whose adventures parallel those of Adam and Eve in surprising ways.

The story of Gilgamesh includes a tale of a sacred plant that grants eternal youth [amrita or amata, ambrosia, an "elixir of life" in the Vedas, likely a concoction for life extension, whereas in Buddhism amata/amrita is nirvana, "the deathless"], guarded by a serpent [naga, earthling-reptilian]. Sound familiar?

It's no coincidence that this motif reappears in the Garden of Eden, where a cunning serpent tempts Eve with the "forbidden fruit" [which is not an apple, but the Apocrypha speculates that it is the grape, as a reference to alcohol, though more likely it would be an entheogenic or magic mushroom, the fruiting body of mycelium] of knowledge.

Furthermore, the Mesopotamian myth of Enki and Ninhursag presents another intriguing parallel. In this tale, Enki, a "god of wisdom," creates a garden and a human-like creature called "Adamu" from the dust of the earth.
  • [Even in the Adam and Eve creation myth we have, the Adam (ha adam = "the man" or humankind in general) was created from adamah or the "earth, ground, dirt"].
The similarities to the biblical story of Adam's creation from the dust [dirt] are striking. It seems that the Hebrew authors borrowed elements from these older narratives to construct their own theological framework.
  • [Judaism, like Christianity, is a hodgepodge of older Middle Eastern and Near Eastern myths, most of them Sumerian.]
Considering these connections, it becomes increasingly apparent that the Adam and Eve story is not a historical account but a symbolic and cultural creation.

It serves as a mythological explanation for the origins of humanity and the presence of sin [literally, "missing the mark"] and suffering [dukkha] in the [human and subhuman] world.

While the historicity of Adam and Eve remains questionable, the story's enduring power lies in its capacity to explore complex philosophical and existential questions in an engaging and relatable manner.

So let us appreciate the Adam and Eve tale for what it is — a brilliant and borrowed fusion of ancient mythologies, conveying profound insights into the human condition [the story we tell ourselves in the West to make sense of the world the best we can].

Whether we take it as literal truth [as we are commanded to in some forms of Protestantism and Catholicism] or poetic metaphor, the story invites us to ponder the timeless themes of temptation, fallibility, and the quest for knowledge.

After all, it is in questioning and seeking understanding that we truly embark on the journey of enlightenment, much like the mythical figures of Adam and Eve themselves.

Sumerian Adam and Eve, Buddhist cosmology

Dhr. Seven, Pat Macpherson, Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly Wiki edit

Could I play the part of Eve in Asia?
This is a continuation of a discussion of the Tree & Serpent exhibition coming soon to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The "serpent" (royal naga) in the Buddhist story is not related to the tree under which the wandering ascetic Siddhartha awoke. But the famous tree of knowledge and talking serpent in the Bible has brought The Met to this tantalizing topic. This got us to thinking about "creation" (the origins of human life on earth, which are told in the Agganna Sutra) and Buddhist cosmology or the shape of things on this plane and in local space.

We were white? - No, Sumerian.
There's an ancient "creation narrative" (human origin story) stolen by the ancient Hebrews, Semites, Jews: Gilgamesh is the older story, but in the first book of the Jewish Bible called Genesis, Adam and Eve are that bible's first man and first woman [9, 10].

Adam's name appears first in Genesis 1 with a collective sense, as "humankind." Subsequently in Genesis 2–3 it carries the definite article ha, equivalent to English "the," indicating that this is "the man" [9] or "the human."
  • [It is this iteration, this generation, this version of a genetically modified earthling human, this time around in the greater cyclical reiteration of life in this small slice of the cosmos, our universe, this part of the multiverse, because there are many world-systems or cakkhavalas, round/spiraling worlds (galaxies?) The human plane is far bigger than this plane or planet, solar system, or galaxy.]
God in the brain (rationality?) is kicking us out
In these chapters God fashions "the human" (ha adam) from earth (adamah) [or dust or ground], breathes life [prana, holy spirit, invisible animating force] into its nostrils, and makes it a caretaker over creation [9].

God [who is ALWAYS plural in the Bible] next creates for the human an ezer kenegdo, a "helper corresponding to him," from his side or rib [10].

The word "rib" is a pun in Sumerian -- because this is a Sumerian tale appropriated by later Jewish  peoples, as if these things happened to them -- as the word ti means both "rib" and "life" [11, 12].
She is called ishsha, "woman," because, the text says, she is formed from ish, "man" [10]. The man receives her with joy, and the reader is told that from this moment a man will leave his parents to "cling" to a woman, the two becoming one [sticky] flesh [10]. More

Our world-system (cakkhavala)

Old flat map, original in Louvre, Paris
This is the world or plane of humans and human-like beings. They live on the surface of the earth [as distinct from the planes within the earth where other, long-lived humanoid beings live]. Rebirth in this plane results from giving (sharing, letting go, being generous) and moral discipline (observing the Five Precepts) of middling quality.

This is the realm of moral choice where future destiny can be guided. The Khana Sutta mentions that this plane is a unique balance of pleasure and pain. It facilitates the development of virtue (e.g., compassion) and wisdom to liberate oneself from the entire cycle or rebirths.

For this reason, rebirth as a human being is considered precious and extremely rare according to the Chiggala Sutta.

The mountain-rings [or ice walls] that engird the axis mundi Mt. Sumeru [Sumersu-meru = "Good Meru"] are surrounded by a vast ocean [likely a reference to space within this solar system, with this "continent" (dipa, lit. "island") referring to earth, our ring girded by mountains, or planet].

The ocean is in turn surrounded by a circular mountain wall called Cakravāḍa चक्रवाड (Pāli Cakkavāḷa चक्कवाळ, Thai จักรวาล or จกฺกวาฬ), which marks the horizontal limit of the world.

In this "ocean" there are four continents (dipas, islands, other planets, platforms, or places in local space) which are, relatively speaking, small islands in it.

Because of the immensity of the ocean, they cannot be reached from each other by ordinary vessels.

But in the past, when the "world monarchs" (cakravartins) ruled, communication between our world and the other local worlds was possible by means of a treasure called the cakraratna (Pāli cakkaratana, a sort of "flying saucer").

A world monarch and retinue could use such a craft [vimana] to fly through the air between the worlds or rings of this flat plain divided by immense mountain ranges. These four islands are:
  1. Jambudvīpa (Pali Jambudīpa) is located in the south and is the dwelling of ordinary human beings like us. It is said to be shaped "like a cart" or rather a blunt-nosed triangle with the point facing south. (This description may echo the shape of the coastline of Southern India). It is 10,000 yojanas [1 yojana = 7 miles] in extent (Vibhajyavāda tradition) or has a perimeter of 6,000 yojanas (Sarvāstivāda tradition) to which can be added the southern coast of a length of only 3.5 yojanas. The landmass takes its name from a giant roseapple or jambu tree (Syzygium cumini), 100 yojanas [~700 miles] tall, which grows in the middle. Every continent has one of these giant trees. All buddhas are said to appear on this island or lamp [light, beacon, object shining in space] of Jambu-dvīpa. The people here are five to six feet tall, and their length of life varies between 10 and about [80,000] years (Asankya Aayu). More

Bible: The Daughters of Adam and Eve (video)

The Untold Truth of Adam and Eve's daughters
(Grunge) April 1, 2022. Everyone knows the biblical story of Adam and Eve, and most people are also familiar with the story of their famous sons Cain and Abel. But many would have us believe that that's where it ends when it comes to offspring. According to some histories, that's very much not the case.

You can do anything you want...except this...
According to lost or uncanonical biblical texts like The Book of the Daughters of Adam, The Conflict of Adam and Eve with Satan, and the Jewish Book of Jubilees, Adam and Eve "begat" (spawned, hatched, put out) way more than just their two problematic sons. They also had daughters named Luluwa, Aklia, and more — dozens more, making their family way weirder than one might expect.

.
The Gilgamesh flood story (which came long before the Noah's Ark retelling) is a flood myth in the Epic of Gilgamesh.

Many scholars believe that the flood myth was added to Tablet XI in the "standard version" of the Gilgamesh Epic by an editor who used the flood story from the Epic of Atra-Hasis [1].

A short reference to the flood myth is also present in the much older Sumerian Gilgamesh poems, from which the later Babylonian versions drew much of their inspiration and subject matter.
History

Gilgamesh's supposed historical reign is believed to have been approximately 2,700 BC [2], shortly before the earliest known written stories. The discovery of artifacts associated with Aga and Enmebaragesi of Kish (Sumer), two other kings named in the stories, has lent credibility to the historical existence of Gilgamesh [3].

The earliest Sumerian Gilgamesh poems date from as early as the Third dynasty of Ur (2,100–2,000 BC) [4].

One of these poems mentions Gilgamesh’s journey to meet the flood hero, Utnapishtim, as well as a short version of the flood story [5].

The earliest Akkadian versions of the unified epic are dated to circa 2,000–1,500 BC [6]. Due to the fragmentary nature of these Old Babylonian versions, it is unclear whether they included an expanded account of the flood myth.

One fragment definitely includes the story of Gilgamesh's journey to meet Utnapishtim.

Tablet XI
The Gilgamesh flood Tablet XI was discovered in Nineveh [8]. It contains additional story material besides the flood. More

The Americas' oldest civilization: Caral-Supe

Visit Peru (video); Xochitl, Dhr. Seven, Pat Macpherson (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly Wiki edit

Reconstruction of one of the pyramids
The Caral-Supe Civilization (Norte Chico or "Small North" civilization) was a complex pre-Columbus era society.

It included as many as 30 major population centers in what is now the Norte Chico region of north-central coastal Peru.

The oldest civilization in the Americas flourished between the 4th and 2nd millennia BC, with the formation of the first city generally dated to around 3,500 BC, at Huaricanga, in the Fortaleza River area (1).
Shaman in Peru performs ceremony (shamanjon.com)
It is from 3,100 BC onward that large-scale human settlement and communal construction became clearly apparent (2), which lasted until a period of decline around 1,800 BC (3).

Since the early 21st century, it has been established that it is the oldest known civilization in the Americas.

This civilization flourished along three rivers: the Supe, the Fortaleza, and the Pativilca. These river valleys each have large clusters of sites.

Further south there are several associated sites along the Huaura River (4). The alternative name, Caral-Supe, is derived from the city of Caral (5) in the Supe Valley, a large and well-studied Norte Chico site.

Complex society in Norte Chico arose a millennium after Sumer in Mesopotamia, was contemporaneous with the Egyptian pyramids, and predated the Mesoamerican Olmec culture by nearly two millennia.

In archeological terms, Norte Chico ("Small North") is a pre-ceramic culture of the pre-Columbian Late Archaic. It completely lacked ceramics and apparently had almost no visual art.

The most impressive achievement of the civilization was its monumental architecture, including large earthwork platform mounds and sunken circular plazas. More

Sumerian tablets tell us everything (video)

Zohar StarGate Ancient Discoveries, 7/17; Dhr. Seven, Pat Macpherson (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Ancient Sumerian Cuneiform Tablets Tell Us Everything We Need to Know
It is fascinating to realize that it might be possible to know more about the 6,000-year-old civilization of Sumeria than we may ever know about the more recent Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans.

The explanation lies in their form of writing -- Sumerian cuneiform stone tablets. Whereas the papyrus of other empires disintegrated over time or was destroyed by fire and war, cuneiform was etched onto wet clay tablets with a stylus creating a unique wedge-shaped script.

These tablets were then dried, baked, and kept in large libraries. About 500,000 of these clay tablets have now been found and have provided modern researchers with invaluable knowledge of the Sumerians.

The knowledge of Sumeria was brought to Egypt by the biblical Patriarch Abraham by means of cleverly coded knowledge found within the Torah and other old Hebraic texts such as the Sefer Yezirah ("Book of Creation") and the Sefer HaZohar ("Book of Light").

These books predate the Talmud, a compilation of older Jewish laws and traditions first written in the 5th century A.D. produced centuries before the time of Jesus.

According to the Book of Light, “mysteries of wisdom” were given to Adam by God while still in the fabled Garden of Eden.

These elder secrets were then passed on through Adam’s sons to Noah on to Abraham long before the Hebrews ever existed as a distinct people.

According to the Judeo-Christian Bible, "Abraham" was a Sumerian originating from Ur of Chaldea, the ancient term for Iraq.
